In this paper, a methodology for the optimal management of a combined irrigation and water supply system based on model predictive control (MPC) is proposed. A control-oriented modelling methodology for this type of systems is presented as well. MPC is used to generate flow control strategies from the sources to the consumer and irrigation areas to meet future demands with appropriate flows, optimizing operational goals such as network safety volumes in dams and flow control stability in actuators (valves, gates and pumps). The case study of Guadiana river is used to exemplify and verify the proposed optimal management methodology. Results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed modelling and control methodologies.

Zinc has been shown to have beneficial effects in vitro on epithelial barrier function, and in vivo to reduce intestinal permeability in malnourished children with diarrhoea. To determine whether malnutrition alters intestinal paracellular permeability, and whether zinc prevents such alterations. Guinea pigs were fed a normal protein diet (NP group), a low protein diet (LP group), or a low protein diet enriched with 1800 ppm zinc (LPZn group) for three weeks. Intestinal permeability was measured on jejunal segments mounted in Ussing chambers by measuring ionic conductance and mucosal to serosal fluxes of 14C-mannitol, 22Na, and horseradish peroxidase. Tight junction morphology was assessed on cryofracture replicas. Mannitol and Na fluxes and ionic conductance increased in the LP group compared with the NP group but remained normal in the LPZn group. Accordingly, jejunal epithelia from the LP group, but not from the LPZn group, showed a small decrease in number of tight junctional strands compared with epithelia from the NP group. Neither malnutrition nor zinc treatment modified horseradish peroxidase fluxes. Malnutrition is associated with increased intestinal paracellular permeability to small molecules, and pharmacological doses of zinc prevent such functional abnormality.

ABSTRACT The main goal of this paper is to motivate why the press-pack Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) is a reliable solution for Medium Voltage (MV) multi-megawatt Wind Turbine (WT) power converters. Reliability is becoming more and more important nowadays when both the size and number of installed WTs is continuously increasing. Multi-level (ML) power converters could offer numerous advantages over the classical two level power converters in MV applications such as reduced semiconductor power losses, reduced harmonic distortion and reduced dv/dt. This paper basically represents a survey on high power IGBT modules and the Al wire-bonded, the Cu wire-bonded, the SKiN flex layer and the press-pack IGBT modules are analyzed from the packaging and reliability point of view. It is concluded that press-pack IGBT modules represent a reliable solution for multi-megawatt wind turbine power converters not only because of better power cycling capability than Al wire-bonded IGBT modules but also because of features such as dual sided cooling and short circuit failure mode.
