Objectives: Parents taking care of children with epilepsy experience stress in their daily lives, which enhances their anxiety, changes their function, and eventually increases their children's behavioral problems. The present study aimed at investigating the effect of creating opportunities for parent empowerment (COPE) program on parents of children with epilepsy or other chronic neurological conditions. Material & methods: A quasi-experimental clinical trial was conducted on 88 mothers of hospitalized children with epilepsy aged 3 to 12 years. In the intervention group, the COPE program was conducted by the researcher in three phases and the usual care group received usual healthcare. The mothers' anxiety was assessed in three phases in both groups. Results: Results of the present study showed that the effect of time and group-time interaction on the state anxiety and trait anxiety was significant in the intervention group; however, the effect of time was not significant in the usual care group (P = 0.12). The differences of state anxiety and trait anxiety were not significant between the two groups (P = 0.136), which depended on the baseline level of anxiety. By analyzing the covariance after controlling the two variables at baseline, it was observed that the score variations in the state anxiety and trait anxiety were significant at all studied time points. Conclusions: The results of the current study indicated the positive effect of the COPE program on the anxiety of parents of children with epilepsy. Since this technique is non-pharmacological, convenient, easy-to-apply, and cost-effective, it can be used to reduce the parents' anxiety.

Abstract Background Parents’ mental health can be impacted by sleep problems experienced by children diagnosed with ADHD. This study aimed to investigate the effect of group-based behavioral parent training (BPT) related to sleep problems of children with ADHD on parents’ mental health. Methods A parallel randomized controlled trial design was used in this study. Participants included 58 parents of school-age children with ADHD who had at least one sleep problem and who were known to medical services in a psychiatric clinic in Rasht city, Iran. Participants were randomly allocated to the intervention or control groups equally. Participants in the intervention group received a 5-week BPT intervention program related to sleep problems of ADHD children including 3 sessions group-based training and 2 telephone follow-up. Data were collected before and two months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics via the SPSS software. Results The findings revealed two months after the intervention, participants in the intervention group had a significant improvement in the anxiety (p = 0.01) and stress (p = 0.02) levels compared to the control group. Conclusion The results suggest that group-based BPT related to sleep problems of children with ADHD could be an effective strategy in improving parents' mental health.

BACKGROUND Understanding factors that can potentially influence patient care and nursing workload in intensive care units is important. Previous studies have shown contradictory outcomes about the relationships between nursing workload and patient and nurse characteristics. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate nursing workload in intensive care units and examine the association between this in relation to patient and nurse characteristics. DESIGN A cross-sectional design was conducted. METHODS All nurses who were working in the intensive care units of five hospitals and met the study criteria were enrolled in the study. Two demographic questionnaires collected nurse and patient demographic information. The Nursing Activities Score was applied to determine nursing workload in three shifts (morning, evening, night) for each nurse. Data were analysed using the independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and multivariable linear regression analysis. RESULTS The Nursing Activities Score was calculated for 509 patients who were under the care of 105 intensive care unit nurses. The mean (SD) Nursing Activities Score was 72.84% (22.07%). Morning shifts, male patients, medical treatments, and referred patients from the emergency ward and other intensive care units imposed a higher workload for nurses. Specifically, female nurses, increased number of patients receiving care, and increased patient length of intensive care unit stay were directly associated with increased Nursing Activities Scores. Work in surgical and burn intensive care units were inversely associated with the Nursing Activities Score. CONCLUSION This study suggests that the workload of nurses in intensive care units can be affected by both nurse and patient characteristics. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The findings can be used to ensure appropriate staffing of intensive care units by nurses. However, nurse and patient characteristics should not be considered the only factors that influence nursing workload in intensive care units.

Introduction: A ppropriate nutrition is a major health objective in children’s early years. Eating problems among children as well as low awareness and the unsuitable function of mothers in this regard could result in complications for children and their families. Objective: We aimed to determine the effect of an integrated training on the mothers of 1- to 3-year-old children with eating problems. Materials and Methods: This was a two-group quasi-experimental study. In total, 70 mothers of 1 to 3-year-old children with eating problems visiting health centers in Rasht City, Iran, participated in this research. They were selected through a nonrandom sampling method. Then, the samples were assigned into the case and control groups. The case group received integrated training. The training sessions were held during three consecutive weeks as two in-person sessions along with presenting an educational CD. Moreover, a virtual session was provided to the study subjects through text messages. The children’s eating problems’ data were recorded using Food Preference Questionnaire (FPQ) measuring eating problems in toddlers (including 5 areas of water satisfaction with eating, mother tension during eating, eating different food types, eating behavior, and food dependence physical signs) before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention by the mothers. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential (t-test, Chi-squared test) statistics. Results: The achieved results indicated no significant difference in the eating problems of toddlers before the intervention in the case and treatment groups. Such lack of difference was in terms of mothers’ satisfaction with child’s eating, and the child’s eating behavior, stress during the child’s eating, and eating different food types. However, immediately and one month after the training, the t-test and Chi-squared test results indicated improved mothers’ satisfaction with children’s eating (P=0.0001) and reduced stress in mothers during children’s eating (P=0.0001). Nevertheless, in the two areas of eating behavior and eating different food types, no significant differences were observed. Conclusion: The obtained results suggested that toddlers’ eating problems could be improved by providing integrated training programs to their mothers.

Preschool age is a crucial period for social development. Social skills acquired during this period are the basis for future life’s success. This study aimed to investigate the level of social skills in preschool children at home and in preschool and to examine the association between children’s social skills and environmental and cultural backgrounds. A cross-sectional study using a multistage cluster sampling method was conducted on 546 children studying in the preschool centers of an urban area of Iran. Data were collected through demographic and social skill questionnaires from parents and teachers. Our findings showed that the social skills of girls were more than those of boys at home. Further, the majority of children had a moderate level of social skills from the parents’ and teachers’ perspectives. There was a modest parent–teacher agreement in most domains of social skills. Moreover, a statistically significant association was reported between children’s social skill domai...
