methodological, cultural-archaeo/ogical, and Ihe heritage record andpreservation. Special emphasis has been placed on the economic and quality control and profitability of Ihe survey research project.

RESUMEN: Se presentan los resultados de un proyecto de investigación sobre un área unitaria de la Meseta Sur española, el val/e del río Tajuña (Madrid), basado en la prospección arqueológica intensiva de superficie, con cobertura total del terreno y aplicando los métodos actuales de la arqueología territorial. Los resultados se desarrollan en tres niveles: teórico-metodológico, arqueológico y de valoración
del patrimonio de la región, resaltando en especial el control, tanto económico como de calidad, del diseño y puesta en práctica de la prospección.

ABSTRACT. The relationship between organizational structure and performance in small firms has received rel-atively limited attention over the last few decades. In understanding small firm performance this seems to be a serious omission. In this paper, we first present the ratio-nale for including organizational structure in the analysis of small firm performance. Then, from the literature on organizational theory, we retrieve several dimensions that may be postulated to describe organizational structures of small firms. Based on the study of a stratified sample of 1411 Dutch small firms we show that nine structure ste-reotypes can be delineated. We further investigate the rele-vance of the empirical taxonomy by looking at the relationship with firm performance in terms of sales growth, profitability and innovativeness. The study sought to investigate selected parental factors that affect the academic achievement of grade six pupils in Kisumu City in Kenya. The study used a causal comparative research design. Two research instruments were used; questionnaires were administered to the grade six pupils and their parents. Document analysis was also used to determine the pupils’ academic performance. These were then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The investigation targeted both public and private primary schools in the city, selected pupils of grade 6, and their parents. Out of the 115 schools in Kisumu City, a total of 12 public schools and 8 private schools were selected using stratified sampling technique. Four hundred (400) pupils of grade six and 400 parents were selected to participate in the research. The findings revealed that socio-economic status, parental level of education, family size, family type and parental involvement affect the academic performance of pupils.

A stratified sampling plan to audit health insurance claims is offered. The stratification is by dollar amount of the claim. The plan is representative in the sense that with high probability for each stratum, the difference in the average dollar amount of the claim in the sample and the average dollar amount in the population, is ``small.'' Several notions of ``small'' are presented. The plan then yields a relatively small total sample size with the property that the overall average dollar amount in the sample is close to the average dollar amount in the population. Three different estimators and corresponding lower confidence bounds for over (under) payments are studied.

Decisions made during the briefing and conceptual design stages of a building project are critical to its success. One of the earliest major decisions which can have a significant effect on downstream events and results is the selection of the structural frame. Given its importance to the efficacy of the finished building, the structural frame selection process should arguably be objective and transparent, the final decision being based on the frame's ability to perform against a range of criteria appropriate to the scheme in question. However, the heuristics underpinning such decisions tend not to be explicit and thus, are difficult for inexperienced clients to understand. This article reports on research which examined the criteria used by clients, structural engineers, architects and main contractors when selecting structural frames. These were established via a postal questionnaire survey of a stratified sample of design professionals, contractors and client organizations. The analysis reveals marked differences in the perceived importance of the criteria identified amongst the respondents, which may result in conflicts between design and construction advisers and their clients should they be made explicit in the design process. Nevertheless, it is important that such differences are revealed within the decision‐making process if more appropriate design decisions are to be made in the future.
