FOREWORD
The monograph is dedicated to the problem of reconstruction of the etiological legend dating back to the times before the chronicles about the origin of the Rus'. The existence of this legend is evidenced by tenth-century Byzantine historical treatises, whose authors consistently refer to the Rus people as Tauri or Tauroscythae. By using this ancient ethnonym, the Byzantines placed the Ruses in the coordinates of Greco-Roman history and thus constructed the foundations of the historical identity of this military and commercial community and legitimized it in the political realities of the time. The author proves that the Tauroscythian pseudo-genealogy of Rus arose in the Byzantine intellectual environment not by accident. It was used as a political tool by which the military activity of the Ruses was pointed in a direction favorable to Byzantium. In the 10th century, units from Rus` joined three Byzantine military campaigns to liberate the island of Crete from the Arabs and participated in the many-months-long (911–912 and 960–961) siege of the capital of the Cretan Emirate – the city of Chandax – the former port of Minoan Knossos.
The Tauroscythian historical identity propagated by the Byzantines served as the ideological basis for the Rus` campaigns on Crete. This pseudo-genealogy was connected to the Mediterranean island by the name of a character from ancient Greek myths – the Cretan king Taurus, who was accepted as the eponym of the Tauro-Scythians and was assigned the role of the legendary ancestor of the dynasty ruling in Kyiv.
The study is focused on the visual aspect of reconstructing the Tauroscythian pseudo-genealogy. Inspired by the Byzantines and motivated by a prolonged stay in Crete, the interest of the Rus` people in the historical heritage of the island was vividly manifested in the literal detailed copying of sacred signs from the Minoan period. The most famous of them took the form of a pair of sacred bull horns, between which socially prestigious visual symbols were placed, the list of which was quite limited. They served as a direct model in creating individual variants of clan signs – bidents and tridents, with which Princess Olga, her son Sviatoslav, and several subsequent generations of Kyiv rulers of the 10th-11th centuries manifested their legendary origin. These signs were gradually modified according to the preferences of their owners and under the influence of new historical realias. One of them, known as the trident of Prince Volodymyr, later became the national coat of arms of Ukraine.
The publication is intended for historians-medievalists, archaeologists, art history specialists, and a wider circle of readers interested in the issues of early medieval Ukrainian history.

The publication considers a fragment of an anonymous geographical treatise of the 10th cent. "The Boundaries of the World from the East to the West" (HudUd al- Alammin al-Mashriqila al-Maghrib), which is known from the only manuscript of the mid-thirteenth century. Its anonymous author reports about different countries. Among other things, the author of "HudUd al-Alam" mentions Rus' and calls the Rus' ruler "Khaqan-Rus". It was found that the geographical landmarks of the description of the country of Rus' in "HudUd al- Alam" are in direct agreement with the latitudinal orientation of the three groups of the Rus' with centers in Kuyaba, Urtab, and S.laba, which were localized in the previous publication "Geography of the Primary Rus' in Eastern Sources". The proposed toponymic explanations for the description of the country of the Rus' in "Hudud al- Alam" are plotted on the map of the Right Bank of the Dnieper.
Key words: "HudUd al- Alam", mentions Rus", of the three groups of the Rus', of the Right Bank of the Dnieper.

The eastern sources of IX–X centuries mentioned three centers of rus’: Kujaba, Arta and Slava. The question of the location of these centers has been the ma er of controversy for 200 years. Researchers usually identifi ed Slavia with area near Novgorod, Kujavia with Kyiv region. Based on the analysis of eastern sources, the author came to the conclusion that three centers of rus’ formed on the ancient trade route from Bulgar on the river Volga to Central Europe region. No doubt that Kujawy be identifi ed with Kyiv, which was nearest to Bulgar. The other two centers were moving west of the Kyiv. Arab geographer al-Idrisi indicates the distance from Cujaba to Arta and from Arta to Slava. This makes it possible to place Artania on the map precisely. Author identifi ed Arta as ancient fortifi ed se lement – site of ancient town Plisnesk, located in the Upper Western Bug. The third center, known as Slava, was likely site of ancient town Volyn`, situated on the river Huchva.

The author addresses the topic of the origin of the architectural and planning concept of the rotunda of St. Nicholas in Peremyshl and considers this church in the light of Ruthenian-Austrian contacts of the second quarter - the middle of the 13th cent. The arguments presented in the publication give grounds to connect the architecture of the rotunda of St. Nicholas in Peremyshl with its probable Austrian analog. The author considers the rotunda of St. John the Baptist in the Austrian Petronell-Carnuntum to be such an analog. This settlement is located in a small area of the eastern part of modern Lower Austria. It was there that the main events of the struggle for the heritage of the Babenbergs in Austria were concentrated, in which Prince Danylo Romanovych and his son Lev Danylovych took an active part. The author argues that the rotunda of St. Nicholas was built as a cathedral city church of the Ukrainian (Ruthenian) community of Peremyshl.

There have been considered in the article the chronicle message of 1259 about pillar with an eagle, built near the town Kholm. Based on the analysis of textual instructions, author investigated typological, morphological and compositional characteristics of this monument and its historical counterparts. The monument interpreted as stone column with base and four-faces capital, crowned with the figure of an eagle. This column was set on the city field, intended for knightlyt ournaments. The semantic content of the composition of the Kholm monument with an eagle is encoded in three signs, mentioned in the article of the Galician-Volynian Chronicle that describes battle at Yaroslavin 1245. The above considerations givere as on to believe that Kholm monument with an eagle was erected in memory of this glorious victory.

The article analyses a complex of chronicle evidence about the establishing of the city (hórod) Volodymyr. The main components of the primary annalistic story about the foundation of the city by Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovych in the “Slovenska land” have been studied. It was proved that this place name was used to outline the Volyn Region. The author considered the methodological intervention to the ancient text by later editors and the gradual transformation of chronicle facts aimed to exaggerate and glorify the city (hórod)of the same name Volodymyr, built due to the eff orts of Prince Vladimir Monomakh on Klyaz’ma River in the northeastern edge of the Kievan state more than a century later.

The author analyzes miniatures of Radziwill Chronicle of XV century, depicting cities. It defines main image types that served as a symbol of a city. It traces idiosyncrasies and details of these images. Despitesketchiness of the drawings depicting architecture, they are an important source of historical and architectural studies of Middle Ages Ukraine. The author claims that a series of illustrations of the Radziwiłł Chronicle`s protograph with city images may be associated with the Anglo-Saxon courtyard of the wife of Volodymyr II Monomakh, known as Gytha of Wessex. An architectural prototypes of the images of city could be the Anglo-Norman castles of the 2nd half of the 11th – beginning of the 12th cent. with four towers in corners.
