Flowers of Jaltomata sinuosa are protogynous with anthers dehiscing a day after the corolla opens. Handpollination of flowers grown in greenhouses from field-collected (South America) seeds significantly decreases their longevity: unpollinated flowers and flowers pollinated the morning they opened lasted 4.5 and 3.6 days, respectively, when anthers were not removed, and 3.6 and 2.4 days, respectively, when all flowers were emasculated prior to anther dehiscence. Unmanipulated flowers of J. sinuosa set fruit abundantly in a pollinatorfree greenhouse, demonstrating autogamy and self-compatibility. At the end of the corolla’s life, abscission of the closed corolla (stamens are adnate to the corolla) brushes pollen onto the stigma as the corolla-androecium drops, self-pollinating flowers. Mean nectar sugar concentration was 52% with volume ranging from 0.65 to 8.5 μl (mean 2.9 μl per flower) measured once in each hermaphroditic-phase flower.

A new species having edible fruit, Jaltomata spooneri Mione & S. Leiva (Solanaceae), is described from Peru, Departments Puno and Cuzco, and shown in photographs. Flowers are protogynous and stamens elongate after the flower opens. Jaltomata spooneri is similar to J. contumacesis S. Leiva & Mione, J. sanchez-vegae, S. Leiva & Mione and J. yacheri Mione & S. Auyero, Javier, Philippe Bourgois, and Nancy Scheper-Hughes, eds. Violence at the Urban Margins. New York: Oxford University Press, 2015. xii +340 pages. Paperback, $24.95. Currently, as many times before, the superficial euphoria of a United States presidential election dominates the media's attention. Meanwhile, in the shadows of cities--the urban margins--the reality of everyday life continues to affect hundreds of thousands of people. Violence in the United States has gained greater attention of late, although mainly because of a number of fatal casualties directed at the police. However, coverage of the victims of violence in areas considered part of the fringe rarely receives attention, except for when a bizarre event begs for attention. Tragically, debates about public safety are dominated by persons from the middle and upper classes, not those from the lower class--the very people that suffer the most from violence. Violence at the Urban Margins, edited by sociologist Ja...

Testate amoebae diversity from 28 surface (0-3 cm depth) soil samples found near Cuzco (6 samples), in Machu Piсchu (17 samples), in Aguas Calientes (5 samples), and one bottom sediment sample from the Lake Titicaca near the Puno collected during March of 2016 were analyzed. The 144 testate amoebae species and infra-specific taxa belonging to 27 genera were identified. Nineteen amoebae have not been identified to species level and likely represent new taxa. Species richness varied from one to 54 taxa per sample. The highest diversity was found in rainforests followed by those in meadows and agave habitats. The only bottom sample from Lake Titicaca has yielded two hydrobiont species from the genus Difflugia. In the course of the study, several rare species with limited geographical distribution were observed, namely Centropyxis castaneus, C. compressa, C. deflandriana, C. latideflandriana, C. cf. ohridensis, C. cf. ovoides, C. cf. pannosus, C. stenodeflandriana, Cyclopyxis plana, C. ...

This article highlights population statistics from Peru, the 3rd largest country in Latin America. The population in 1985 has been estimated at 19.7 million. In 1982, the birth rate was 35/1000 and the mortality rate was 10/1000. Infant mortality stood at 99/1000 live births and life expectancy at birth was 59 years. 41% of Peru's population is under 15 years of age, and only 4% is 65 years of age or older. The country's total fertility rate is 5.2 births/woman. Only 0.4% of the population is foreign born. Peru is highly urbanized, and 65% of the country's total population growth in 1981 occurred in its cities. 1 in 3 Peruvians resides in the capital city of Lima. The 2 largest racial groups are mestizos and whites (53%) and Indians (46%). 21% of the population is illiterate. 40.7% of the labor force is employed in agriculture; however, only 15% of the national income is derived from agriculture. The GNP per capita was US$1040 in 1983. The country's economy is in serious trouble at present, with an annual inflation rate of 250% and a foreign debt of US$13.5 billion.

Astana, Kazakhstan’s new capital city is being built to fit the future vision of the country’s leaders. Unique architectural styles, combined with creative morphological patterns give the city a distinctive look. It is being constructed to impress. It also represents a break from the past. As such, Astana embodies the meaning of a ‘Forward city.’ Forward cities are created for a variety of reasons; political, geopolitical, religious, economic or a combination of these. By relocating a capital city elsewhere, a country seeks to construct a fresh urban site that reflects a change from the traditional center of governmental activities to a new location that reveals a new direction for the country and its people. This chapter provides a brief background of the political context and conditions existing in the region, followed by an overview of the city’s geographic base, and scrutinize the unique methods of finance used to construct Astana. Also, the planning and design of the city will be examined, paying special attention to the ways in which architecture has been utilized to construct a futuristic vision of a public project for domestic and international consumption.

The book has great potential as a textbook for upper level undergraduate courses. This potential is enhanced by the inclusion of boxes, chapter summaries, discussion questions, “further reading” lists, and Web sites. I would have thought a map or two would make an appearance, and the visuals in general are fairly sparse, given the textbook styling. Yet the book’s utility outweighs these minor shortcomings, particularly because it is also a book valuable for research purposes, providing engaged, highlevel arguments on a number of key debates. McEwan’s extensive and ecumenical reading of postcolonial studies, development geography, and global feminism are put to good use throughout the text.
