We live in an age of authoritarian revanchism, an era of Austerity-Security States often voted in by a set of fears stoked by elites that economies require patriarchal, conserving policies. Hence the end of state welfare functions, destruction of stable employment and unclear job futures create profound economic fear even as the destruction of communal bonds such as identities, social protections and sense of place have produced deep social dread. Resistance, rebellion and revolution remain ready and apt responses for people all around the world. Recent academic interest in ‘imaginaries’ – social, cultural, technological, psychological and more – reflect a renewed appreciation for human agency, collective action, ideology, cultural matters and the ‘narrative turn’. Rich revolutionary imaginaries, often daring acts of bricolage, provide people with the means and methods to struggle for control of the material and ideological conditions of their everyday lives even in the face of forces inimical to their interests. What could be more meaningful than changing the small worlds that are our everyday worlds and hence matter most for most of us most of the time? Where, when, and who will bring revolution into the 21st Century? A broader, deeper definition will help to ascertain, explore and explicate.

This article explores the ways in which twentieth century revolutionaries in Latin America and the Caribbean have created and employed revolutionary imaginaries with particular attention to their deployment of time, place, and space. The tension between urban/city places and spaces and rural/jungle/mountain places and spaces are considered, with specific attention to Mexico at the "beginning" and "end" of the century and Cuba in the 1950s. By positioning the revolutionary imaginary that evolved as acentric (transversal) rather than arboreal or polycentric (rhizomic) it is possible to see how (im)possibilities might abound for people in the region.

If 50 years on it is a challenge to get a clear picture of the place of the process known as the Cuban Revolution, no event in that time has had more lasting impact on so many people in so many places. The Cuban Revolution mattered, matters, and will continue to matter. It enabled and enobled people around the world to stand up and struggle or renew struggles already under way, it continues to stand as a powerful testament to both social justice work and commitment in countries around the world, and it will provide a model—for what to do and not to do—for future actors in popular collective efforts as well as efforts to improve health care and education. The legacy of the Cuban Revolution, its premise and its promise, is deep and wide.

There is currently an increasing interest in the role of Christianity in Cuba. The historic 1998 visit of John Paul II to the island has stimulated that interest. However, partially due to the isolation that Cuba has experienced, there are a number of caricatures about the history and the current reality of Cuban Christianity. Miguel A. De La Torre's book, The Quest for the Cuban Christ, does much to dispel myths and misunderstandings. Further, it opens up new vistas for a deeper and more positive understanding of Cuban Christianity. One could easily form the impression that the Cuban Catholic Church was not in touch with the major developments of the Second Vatican Council and, therefore, that it does not have a biblical understanding of either the preferential option for the poor or liberation theology. By contrast, Jose Marti, according to De La Torre, was in a certain sense a forerunner of the liberating themes of the 1968 General Conference of the Latin American Bishops at Medellin, Colombia. Marti both anticipated and fully supported the preferential option for the poor, and he challenged the dissonance between the Cubans on the island and those in the diaspora. Thus, he promoted a Cuban national identity. De La Torre emphasizes that the Cuban quest for Christ requires a serious consideration of historical symbols in order to understand how God has communicated to the Cuban people. These symbols are expressed in art, music, and many other venues. The question of the identity of the Cuban Christ needs to be looked at from the "underside" of Cuba's history. This implies a veritable "ajiaco" (a traditional Cuban stew that blends an eclectic array of ingredients into a vibrant whole). De La Torre's quest is extremely rich, and it is most enlightening. It provides an opening for accurate understanding of contemporary Cuban Christianity.
