Deindustrialization refers to a considerable process of transformation in Western societies, with economic and social dimensions as well as important political and symbolical consequences. After drawing a historiographical panorama, this paper focuses on the gendered dimension of the deindustrialization and puts an emphasis on the workers’ masculinities, as industrial workers are often stigmatized nowadays. This paper also highlights the link between these changes and increasing environmental concerns, before finally touching on the fruitfulness of the notion of moral economy.

Working-class writings often originated from self-taught writers. The access to “legitimate” culture sometimes took place through a mentor or scholarly institution. But the trade union movement implemented/created its own modes of training. Workers, women as well as men, therefore took the pen to write a whole variety of texts (poetry, stories, testimonials, newspaper articles, etc.) which were organized around three main polarities: daily writings, biographical narratives or militant texts. They thus responded to multiple functions: they were not only aimed at teaching, but also constituted modes of struggle and could include a literary ambition.

The Spring 1968 strikes inaugurated a long offensive, mainly brought on by laborers, that contributed to improve the material conditions of the working class. The workers’ world, however, did not obtain similar results at the juridical or welfare levels and remained subjected to entrepreneurial decisions: the Right in power preserved almost all the employers’ prerogatives, and so the notion of industrial democracy did not penetrate the enterprise and the workers’ stand remained utterly fragile. When in 1982 the socialist government intended to consolidate the employee rights by the Aurox Laws (on freedom of enterprise, personnel representative organs, collective bargaining and the like) the ideological attitude and the political responsiveness of the nation were radically changed: the owners could thus bring forward their liberal counter-offensive, while the industrial workers tried mostly and often in vain to save their jobs.

Until the 1970s, hazing or ragging in the workplace existed among both male and female workers, to mark young people’s entry into factories. They served a variety of functions: as rites of passage, as brutal manifestations of domination or violence, or as pranks intended to make others laugh. Because of their obvious sexual dimension, they contributed to the association of workers’ masculinities with manhood.

The coal miners’ strike in the fall of 1948 has often been seen as the symbolic beginning of the Cold War in France. To date, however, only a limited number of historical works have examined this important event. By consulting the many archives available, this article seeks to understand this conflict, which can be reduced neither to the effects of Communist manipulation, nor to spontaneous ideological class action. On the contrary, the 1948 coal miners’ strike was a complex social and political movement, governed by varying temporal and geographical logics. This analysis in particular attempts to elucidate the extreme violence that defined this conflict, and which erupted not only in the relationships between the coal miners and the State, but also among the coalminers themselves.

Prior to 1914, workers’ canteens were rare. The First World War was a phase of accelerated development of this form of catering. These changes were due to the necessity of improving food supply: the population of workers to be fed had grown, and had also changed, with more women and foreigners, with different eating habits. The question of meal-taking at the workplace thus reveals critical contemporary issues of effort of production, social peace, and reform of labor conditions (for which minister Albert Thomas, in particular, had great hopes). The number of canteens increased considerably. The cooperative initiative to manage restaurants, canteens and sometimes supply stores was important, but in this respect, employers overwhelmingly dominated this kind of initiative. Workers seemed satisfied with such an offer. Nevertheless, they only haphazardly used such workplace restaurants, even though they were supposed to be an answer to problems of food supply and cost of living.

Unlikely encounters happened in the great social unrest that the end of the 1960s represented. They were part of a long tradition in which intellectuals were anxious to meet the common people, principally manual workers. But they intensified in a number of gatherings in the early 1960s. In May-June 1968, as the social space was being decompartmentalized, these unlikely meetings took form in three main groups that gathered around the workers: first students, then technicians and managers, and lastly peasants. These meetings went on in the following years, principally in the great conflicts such as Lip and Larzac. However, these encounters went against union strategies, that of the CGT mainly, and were limited by some factors: social mixing did not work in the zones that did not take part in May-June 1968, and it was also difficult when these encounters exposed people’s most intimate dimensions, principally their conception of the body.

In December 1978, in the context of the attempt to save the steel industry, the Usinor group announced 21,750 job losses, particularly at Longwy and Denain. For the workers, this terrible decision was somewhat expected because of the severe contraction of the steel market, but it was still incomprehensible because many experts were betting on an upswing of activity. Refused by a population whose identification with their work was upset, the decision led to an intense mobilization for a semester during which forms of violence allied with the creation of union radio stations created a repertory of partially new forms of action. Beyond its failure, this conflict shows the interest of participating in the reshaping of the political and union areas that are characteristic of crisis periods.
