Abstract: People interact with each other in many levels of attention, intention and meaning. This Interaction Continuum is used daily to deal with different contexts, adapting the interaction to communication needs and available resources. Nevertheless, computer-supported interaction has mainly focused on the most direct, explicit and intrusive types of human to human Interaction such as phone calls, emails, or video conferences.

Abstract. Ambient intelligence (AmI) represents a promising paradigm for group-centred collaborative interaction with the surrounding environment. The complexity for AmI designs is closely connected with the mechanism for describing their inherent features. What would be interesting is a method which is capable of describing these properties in a straightforward way. Task modelling techniques are a suitable method for AmI systems.

Ubiquitous computing, also-called pervasive computing, is an emerging technology that offers new opportunities and challenges [14]. We are especially interested in those that have an impact in home environments. In particular, we are focusing on how context information can enhance user interaction within a smart home environment. We propose that the context gathered from the environment should be collected in a common model shared by every context-aware application [1].

During our life, we are involved in a huge variety of activities that we constantly repeat associated to diverse contexts. These activities can be related to domestic routines, working tasks, everyday urban-life, and so on. Each day there are a lot of decisions to be taken, both in regular situations (eg," what should I have for dinner tonight?"," which clothes will I wear today?") and in unexpected ones (eg," the underground is not working, how will I go home now?").

Abstract. This article presents a proposal for evaluating a privacy mechanism in pervasive environments. These environments are capable of sensing personal information anywhere and at anytime. This implies a risk to privacy that might not be assumed if a clear and trustable privacy management model is not provided. We have devised a privacy solution dealing with user's privacy as a tradable good for obtaining environment's services.

Abstract. There are a staggering number of adults with cognitive impairments due to disease and/or age. These impairments considerable diminish their abilities to carry out everyday tasks. Money management has been identified as one of the key barriers to an independent lifestyle for such individuals. How can we exploit technology to deliver personal assistance to this population? Which kinds of interfaces are most suitable for them?

Abstract. People with cognitive disabilities have some difficulties with memory, literacy skills, attention and problem solving. Computers and specifically, adaptation mechanisms can be used to improve their learning. The adaptation allows fitting the learning process to each user. This paper presents a proposal to adapt learning activities while people are interacting using multitouch tabletops. The adaptation mechanism takes into account structural aspects, content adaptation and the interaction provided.

Abstract. Ambient intelligence (AmI) is a promising paradigm for humancentred interaction based on mobile and context-aware computing, natural interfaces and collaborative work. AMENITIES (a conceptual and methodological framework based on task-based models) has been specially devised for collaborative systems and is the starting point for a new design proposal for application to AmI systems.

Abstract. This paper covers those aspects of modern interfaces which expand and enhance the way in which people interact with computers, like multi-touch table systems, presence-detection led displays and interactive virtualized real-life environments. It elaborates on how disabled or conditioned people take great advantage of natural interaction as interfaces adapt to their needs; interfaces which can be focused towards memory, cognitive or physical deficiencies. Applications size-up to serve specific users with customized tools and ...

In this paper we present the results in the evaluation of the use of a virtual agent together with a spoken dialogue system in an ambient intelligence environment. To develop the study, 35 different subjects had to perform eight different tasks and fill in a questionnaire with their impressions. From the answers we can conclude that the use of the virtual agent does not provide an improvement in their appreciation of the conversation performance but it offers them a more human-like interaction. Only a minority of users preferred to maintain ...

This paper presents a proposal of a context-based architecture to achieve the required synergy among the ubiquitous computing devices of an intelligent environment. These devices produce context information that models the behaviour of the environment. This context information is the glue among the devices and the context-aware applications. The generated context information provides a common view of the world. A blackboard architecture allows to share this context information and a context model is proposed to ...

This article analyses the nature of personal information according to privacy and proposes different privacy managing solutions for each type of information. Mainly focused on short-term information, the “Fair Trade” metaphor will be presented as a mean to control privacy in a balance between sharing and getting information. Combined with the appropriate monitoring and punitive tools we hypothesize that this balance will reduce system abuses and enrich the information services provided. Finally a context-aware Instant Messenger ...

Abstract. Ambient Intelligence is a promising research area that opens attractive perspective for improving human-computer interaction. Since AmI systems require knowing user's private information, privacy issues are especially relevant. This paper follows a two-fold approach. Firstly, a privacy framework for AmI systems is introduced. We analyses the elements involved in privacy management and the nature of personal information. Mainly we will focus on control privacy for shortterm information. Secondly, this work presents a ...

Abstract In this paper, we present the interpretation and generation processes of a spoken dialogue interface for ambient intelligence. The interface is automatically created for each specific environment and the interpretation and generation vary depending on the environment and its context. These processes rely on a dialogue tree structure. Several modules process the tree structure and the context information to produce specific dialogues for the current environment state. The interface has been implemented and evaluated in ...

Abstract In this article we present a middleware developed for Ambient Intelligence environments. The proposed model is based on the blackboard metaphor, which is logically centralized but physically distributed. Although it is based on a data-oriented model, some extra services have been added to this middle layer to improve the functionality of the modules that employ it. The system has been developed and tested in a real Ambient Intelligence environment.
