Recent years have witnessed a steady increase in occurrences of the label cultural linguistics, used to refer either to a broad field of scientific endeavor--which I suggest to call cultural linguistics (in lower case)--or to a more narrowly defined framework within that field--which I suggest to call CULTURAL LINGUISTICS (in small capitals). The latter saw the light of day in 1996 but has become better known since Farzad Sharifian provided it with its current interdisciplinary base, replacing Gary Palmer’s term imagery with a more fitting alternative. Cultural conceptualizations are the tools CULTURAL LINGUISTICS uses to study aspects of cultural cognition and its instantiation in language; they include cultural categories, cultural metaphors, cultural schemas, and cultural models. Instances of these exist in all the languages of the world. Oddly enough, in CULTURAL LINGUISTICS, the term cultural value appears to be used rather sparingly, and not at all in a technical sense. This raises the question of whether any bridges can be built between CULTURAL LINGUISTICS, on the one hand, and APPLIED ETHNOLINGUISTICS, on the other. A recent by-product of the natural semantic metalanguage approach, APPLIED ETHNOLINGUISTICS (which is but one form of applied ethnolinguistics) was developed without reference to either CULTURAL LINGUISTICS or cultural linguistics and makes prolific use of the term cultural value, which it sees as absolutely fundamental to its endeavors. Close scrutiny reveals that, like APPLIED ETHNOLINGUISTICS, CULTURAL LINGUISTICS does acknowledge the importance of cultural values: it appears that detailed study of culturally specific categories, metaphors, schemas, and models may lead to a more precise understanding of the cultural values upheld in particular language communities. Nonetheless, there seems to be little prospect for an eventual amalgamation of the two frameworks. Rather, it is argued that APPLIED ETHNOLINGUISTICS is part of the broad field of cultural linguistics (lower case), where, together with CULTURAL LINGUISTICS (small capitals), it is able to provide a useful methodology for the study of language and cultural values.

Used at first with their original (definite) article, the phrases exception française and fin de l'exception française gained instant notoriety after the publication of Furet, Julliard and Rosanvallon's 1988 book La République du centre: La fin de l'exception française. Before too long, the shorter phrase, which (contrary to what is sometimes asserted) was already in existence, also started occurring without the article, with other determiners, and in the plural. This paper details some of the splendeurs et misères (including progressive trivialization) of both the longer and the shorter phrase, thought of as exponents of a single formula.

Dans une interaction qui met en présence des interlocuteurs n’appartenant pas à la même langue-culture, les éventuels malentendus ou échecs communicatifs qui surgissent peuvent être occasionnés par des différences culturelles ignorées. Dans une situation de ce genre, surtout si elle est susceptible de se répéter, il sera utile que les interlocuteurs se familiarisent avec les valeurs culturelles les plus importantes dans la langue-culture de l’autre – ou qu’au moins l’un d’eux fasse un effort allant dans ce sens. Mais comment s’y prendra-t-on ? Comment se familiariser avec quelque chose d’aussi intangible qu’un ensemble de valeurs ? Dans cet article, nous proposons un certain nombre de stratégies d’apprentissage de valeurs « étrangères » dans le cadre d’une formation en langues étrangères ; l’exploitation intelligente de certaines ressources de la langue enseignée, l’analyse sélective de certains comportements communicatifs et l’observation de certains faits de société judicieusement choisis donnent à l’enseignant le moyen d’équiper ses étudiants avec des savoirs culturels pertinents. Nous appelons ethnolinguistique appliquée l’ensemble des démarches permettant à des étudiants de niveau relativement avancé de voir plus clair dans la problématique des langues-cultures et des valeurs culturelles qu’on a coutume d’y associer.

Les stéréotypes envisagés dans cet article servent de point de départ à une démarche visant à corroborer la réalité, dans la langue-culture française, de la valeur culturelle de la prise de position. La démarche adoptée relève de l'ethnolinguistique appliquée, un ensemble de protocoles conçu à l'intention d'étudiants en langues étrangères dont la compétence linguistique est suffisamment avancée pour qu'ils puissent utiliser leurs ressources langagières afin de découvrir, par des moyens essentiellement (mais pas uniquement) linguistiques, des valeurs culturelles typiquement associées à la langue-culture étudiée. Les valeurs postulées étant hypothétiques, une corroboration sera indispensable. Un protocole particulier (celui qui est illustré ici) est prévu à cet effet. La valeur culturelle de la prise de position sera présentée sous forme d'un scénario pédagogique exprimé en français minimal, outil descriptif basé sur la version française de la métalangue sémantique naturelle. Des précautions sont prises afin de prévenir le destinataire de scénarios de ce type qu'il s'agit de généralisations (inévitables dans la mesure où les langues-cultures ne sont jamais homogènes). Mots-clés : ethnolinguistique appliquée, valeurs culturelles, stéréotypes, français langue étrangère, prise de position The stereotypes envisaged in this paper serve as a starting point for a research protocol aimed at corroborating the reality, in French languaculture, of the cultural value of stance-taking. The protocol adopted here is part of a research paradigm called applied ethnolinguistics, elaborated for use with and by foreign language students whose linguistic competence is sufficiently advanced to enable them to use their language resources to discover, through essentially (but not uniquely) linguistic means, the cultural values typically associated with the languaculture they study. Since the posited values are hypothetical, corroboration will be required. A specific protocol (the one illustrated here) has been set aside for this purpose. The cultural value of stance-taking will be presented in the form of a pedagogical script expressed in minimal French, a descriptive tool based on the French version of the natural semantic metalanguage. Precautions are taken to ensure that end-users of such scenarios are aware that they are dealing with generalisations (which are unavoidable as languacultures are never homogeneous).

Narrative medicine is an approach to medicine which seeks to combine with and enhance conventional evidence-based medicine by adding perspectives and experience in medical humanities. The chapter expounds on the importance of effective communication with patients and in particular on the importance of having some structured protocols (scripts, interview prompts, and the like) to encourage more comprehensive and effective patient narratives and to allow for increased comparability between them. It tells the story of an emerging collaboration with Minimal English and an international pilot study applying Minimal English to such protocols.

Parmi les linguistes dont la langue de travail est le français, les tenants et aboutissants de la métalangue sémantique naturelle (MSN), complète avec son vocabulaire extrêmement réduit de 65 primitifs sémantiques, ses molécules et sa grammaire supputée universelle, restent encore largement méconnus. La présentation qui suit est conçue en particulier pour celles et ceux qui ne connaissent pas l’approche MSN (d’après l’anglais NSM approach) ou qui, sur la foi de lectures partielles, ont conclu un peu rapidement qu’elle n’avait peu ou rien à leur offrir.
