Three studies assessed the relationship between language and the perception of emotion. The authors predicted and found that the accessibility of emotion words influenced participants' speed or accuracy in perceiving facial behaviors depicting emotion. Specifically, emotion words were either primed or temporarily made less accessible using a semantic satiation procedure. In Studies 1 and 2, participants were slower to categorize facial behaviors depicting emotion (i.e., a face depicting anger) after an emotion word (e.g., " anger ") was satiated. In Study 3, participants were less accurate to categorize facial behaviors depicting emotion after an emotion word was satiated. The implications of these findings for a linguistically relative view of emotion perception are discussed.

ABSTRACT The goal of this study is to estimate the contribution of the extracellular sodium pool to the triple quantum (TQ) sodium MR signal in the brain. The extracellular sodium MR signal is separated from the intracellular sodium MR signal in the in vivo rat brain using the thullium shift reagent, TmDOTP5-, which does not cross the cell membrane. 1 In order to get the shift reagent (SR) across the blood brain barrier (BBB), hyperosmotic mannitol is used to temporarily break the BBB.

The Default-Mode Network (DMN) is an organized functional network of several brain regions active during the resting state and inhibited during the performance of active tasks [1]. It involves retrieval and manipulation of past events in an effort to solve problems and develop future plans [2]. Analysis of resting state activity in clinical conditions may enhance the understanding of the pathophysiological underpinning of mental illnesses [2]. Comorbid anxiety is common in mid-life and late-life depressive disorders [3].

Abstract Triple quantum (TQ) sodium MRI techniques with clinically acceptable 18-min data acquisition times were demonstrated in vivo in a nonhuman primate model of focal brain ischemia. Focal brain ischemia was induced in four animals using embolization coils to occlude the posterior cerebral artery, and a balloon catheter to occlude the middle cerebral artery.

Voxel Based Morphometry is an established method for assessing changes in brain anatomy in schizophrenia. Recent metanalytic studies,[3], using this approach have suggested the presence of reduced gray matter (GM) in relatively focal lateral and medial prefrontal and temporal cortical regions that are present at the first episode and which appear to become more extensive with illness progression.

Different strategies have been proposed to create a template for fMRI brain image normalization, including the use population-based templates and individual subject templates. However the template selection of a certain study may depend on the population of the study, as well as the degree of spatial deformation allowed by the registration algorithm.

Vigorous exercise increases lactate and glucose uptake by the brain in excess of the increase in brain oxygen uptake. The metabolic fate of this non-oxidized carbohydrate entering the brain is poorly understood, but accumulation of lactate in the brain and/or increased net synthesis of amino acid neurotransmitters are possible explanations. Previous proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies using conventional pulse sequences have not detected changes in brain lactate following exercise.

The experimental determination of spin-3/2 relaxation properties is often compromised by the presence of B0 and B1 inhomogeneities. In this work we demonstrate the use of superoperators formalism for the development of a robust scheme for the measurement of spin-3/2 relaxation in the presence of non-ideal B0 and B1 fields.

By its very nature, image reconstruction from non-uniformly sampled Fourier Transform data requires compensation of the sampling density for accurate results. In the usual gridding algorithm,[1], the non-uniform sampling is accounted for by data premultiplication. In least square based methods, the non-uniformity is corrected through a weighting factor [2]. Among the several methods proposed in the literature for sampling density compensation, the approach based on Voronoi diagram is the most natural.
