BackgroundAchieving a void‐free root canal filling is a challenge in current clinical pulpectomy practice.AimTo compare filling effectiveness and internal voids of root filling materials and obturation techniques in resin‐prototyped primary incisors by micro‐CT.DesignFifty prototypes were instrumented and randomly divided (n = 10) according to the filling materials (Vitapex®, ZOE, Calcicur®, Feapex, and Calen®‐ZO) and obturation technique: lentulo or pressure syringe (n = 5). The specimens were micro‐CT scanned (pixel size = 7.83 μm) and reconstructed, and the total volume of filled canal (%FC) and internal voids (%IV) of the bulk filling material was calculated. Kruskal‐Wallis and Mann‐Whitney tests were used to detect differences and interactions among groups.ResultsCalen®‐ZO, Vitapex®, and ZOE showed similar %FC. Calcicur® showed lower %FC compared with Calen®‐ZO, Vitapex®, and ZOE (P < .05) but similar to Feapex. No statistically significant differences in %FC between lentulo...

The sustainability of the natural resources of our planet is a topic for worldwide debate. Mankind, during its evolution as a species, has not been greatly concerned about conserving the environment in which we live. Nowadays we are reaping the fruits of this neglect. Climatic changes and storms are good examples of this. We, humans, must re-think our attitudes in order to leave the planet in a healthy state to be used by our descendants. But thinking of orthodontics, what can we do as orthodontists? From this perspective, the authors of the present study aimed, in a clear and objective manner, to present simple and sustainable ways to proceed during our activity as orthodontists, in order to minimize the effects on nature, caused by man.

This study investigated the presence of Enterococcus faecalis in primary teeth with primary root canal infections and related to the possible failure of pulpectomy outcome after 36 months. Root canal samples were obtained from 25 out of 244 patients using the sterile paper cone method. The identification of E. faecalis was done with culture and molecular tests using species-specific 16S rRNA gene-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR). After 36 months, the pulpectomy outcome was evaluated. Enterococcus faecalis was found in five (20%) samples, and dental caries were the cause of primary infection in all of them. Pulpectomy outcome was evaluated only in teeth that completed the entire clinical protocol and were followed up to 36 months (n = 8). From these, 75% (n = 6) were successful and 25% (n = 2) failed. E. faecalis was present in 50% of both successful and failed cases. Enterococcus faecalis was not related to the failure of endodontic treatment of primary teeth.

The possibility of having a commercial product such as waxed floss with an additional agent for controlling and preventing caries is promising. The aim of this research was to determine the uptake of fluoride on tooth enamel in situ after the utilization of a dental floss with fluoride incorporated into the wax. One hundred blocks of bovine enamel were artificially demineralized and randomly separated into a Control Group (C) and a Test Group (T). The dental blocks in group T were mounted two-by-two simulating proximal contacts and were fixed into intra-oral lower arch devices. Eight volunteers with a similar salivary flow and buffer capacity wore devices with the enamel blocks for eight days. During this period of time the subjects applied a 25 cm long portion of a mint waxed floss with fluoride (0.15 mgF/m, Oral-B) between the blocks, 3 times a day for 2 minutes after each meal. At the same time, brushing was carried out with a fluoride-free toothpaste. The alkali-soluble fluoride...

Objective: This study aimed to identify E. faecalis in saliva of patients that were divided into two groups: 10 patients with caries lesions and 10 caries-free patients. Material and methods: Saliva samples were collected with a sterile swab and inoculated in enterococcosel media for 48 hours. The positive samples were subcultured in broth agar - blood medium for storage and subsequent PCR analysis. The data were analyzed using the SPSS (χ2). Results: From the 20 cases included in the study, 3 were positive in the Enterococcosel medium, and both tests (culture and PCR) used confirmed that three of them belonged to the species E. faecalis. No samples were positive in Enterococcosel broth in the group of caries-free patients. From the three samples that were identified as Enterococcus in broth (positive bile esculin test), an amplified for E. faecalis PCR analysis (p > 0.005). Conclusion: Through the use of PCR, it was possible to identify the genus Enterococcus and the species E. ...

The buccal fat pad is an anatomic structure, which contributes significantly to the prominence of the newborn’s and infant’s cheek. It is probably important in the suckling mechanism. In this article a case of unusual protrusion of this structure into the oral cavity of an infant is described. Besides the two-years of follow-up, a review of the literature is presented and a differential diagnosis is outlined. J Clin Pediatr Dent 29(2): 181-184, 2004

The aim of this study was to evaluate, via clinical and radiographic assessment, pulpectomy outcomes performed on primary anterior teeth both with and without a citric acid solution to enhance smear layer removal. Patients with a matched pair of primary incisors (split-mouth design) with irreversible pulp changes were selected. A total of 36 teeth (18 children) received pulpectomies and were followed for 36 months. Pulpectomies were performed using sodium hypochlorite and saline solution as canal irrigants; during the last irrigation, the tooth was randomly selected to receive ( Group 1) or not receive (Group 2) the citric acid solution for smear layer removal. The roots were filled with ZOE paste. Overall pulpectomy success was 90.6%. Cases with smear layer removal were successful 82.3% of the time; those without smear layer removal, 88.2%, and there were no statistical differences (P=1.00). Pulpectomy with smear layer removal in primary incisors exhibited, after 36 months, a high ...

Pulpectomy in primary teeth is a common technique that preserves teeth in the oral environment and maintains or recovers periapical tissues to a healthy condition. This article describes the ectopic eruption of permanent incisors whose primary predecessors underwent pulpectomy using ZOE filler paste. In a group of 135 teeth that received pulpectomy therapy due to caries, 10 primary maxillary incisors had overretention and were followed for at least 3.5 years (mean time of 4.2 years), both clinically and radiographically, until the permanent teeth erupted. The proposed treatment included extraction of the overretained primary incisors based on permanent successor eruption chronology and contralateral eruption. Seven permanent teeth erupted ectopically. Autocorrection of the permanent tooth positions was observed in five cases. It can be concluded that periodic clinical and radiographic assessments are essential to verify radicular and filling paste resorptions and to avoid overretent...

Evaluation of pulpectomy in an institution of higher education: a retrospective study Endodontic therapy in the deciduous teeth was analyzed in 3,358 medical records of children treated at the Clinica de Odontopediatria of the Faculdade de Odontologia of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) for the period fron 1990 to 2010. Data from this retrospective study were tabulated in SPSS 16.0, and the medical profile was analyzed by decade (P1 = 1990-2000; P2 = 2001-2010) using the x test. The children’s mean age was 4.5 ± 1.4 years for the first decade and 5.5 ± 2.1 years for the second decade. A major reason for treatment remains the presence of extensive caries (79.9%). For the filling of the conduits in the first period, the paste used was proposed by Guedes-Pinto (76.5%), and in the second period, zinc oxide and eugenol paste was used (54.0%). We concluded that there was no significant change in the protocol of pulpectomy performed at the Departamento de Odontopediatria o...

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare and significant dental malformation. The present report describes an unexpected radiographic finding of rare tooth developmental anomaly and conservative management of primary teeth with in a child in mixed dentition. A 5-year-old healthy girl was referred to the Pediatric Dental Clinic due to pain and periapical radiograph exam showed teeth with abnormal large pulp chambers and a thin enamel and dentin of the primary incisors and canine and abnormal germs of the permanent successors teeth, with ‘ghost-like’ appearance. In addition, no root formation or only an insignificant amount was visible, characterizing regional odontodysplasia. At 10 years old, the treatment plan consisted of rehabilitation with a provisory partial resinous fixed prosthesis until implant surgery. The girl is still being followed up periodically.

Cystinosis is a genetically determined metabolic disorder whose most prominent feature is end-stage renal disease. This case report describes the dental status of a 12-year-old child with a history of chronic renal failure secondary to cystinosis. Observed dental anomalies included enamel hypoplasia and hypocalcification, delayed dental development, and dental agenesis. Oral manifestations of nephropathic cystinosis are not well documented in the literature, so it is very important to highlight the dental characterizations of this complex disease.
This article reports a case of root dilaceration and enamel hypoplasia in permanent maxillary incisors resulting from acute trauma in the primary dentition and the multidisciplinary treatment provided during 11 years of follow-up.
