This study examines migration representation in three parliamentary chambers: the Spanish Chamber, the European Parliament, and the British House of Commons. The time span of its analysis coincides with the eighth Legislature of Spain (2004-2008). The reasons for this decision are straightforward. If parliaments portray or construct ideological debates in democratic societies, it seems logical to turn our attention to them as a means of assessing the nature and quality of comparable but different multicultural environments in which migration is a major defining feature. Furthermore, this time span allows for an examination of such societies at different ideological phases, for example, Spain's conceptualisation of migration in the initial stages of parliamentary representation. The study expands the method of corpus-assisted analysis through a critical theoretical framework proposed by the sociopolitical scientist Zapata-Barrero. Data were obtained from the European Comparable and Parallel Corpus Archive of Parliamentary Speeches. Well-established tools in corpus linguistics, such as frequency and collocation, were employed, leading to an examination of Zapata-Barrero's reactive and proactive discourses. The quantitative methods used were especially in-depth, undertaking an exhaustive descriptive and statistical treatment and aiming to strengthen the validity of subsequent qualitative analyses. Consequently, a virtuous circle was achieved: the corpus linguistic procedures reached higher levels of theoretical abstraction, while Zapata-Barrero's framework gained robustness and more potential for generalisation. The study's originality, thus, lies in the mutual synergies activated by this theoretical and methodological combination.

This paper presents the ParlaMint corpora containing transcriptions of the sessions of the 17 European national parliaments with half a billion words. The corpora are uniformly encoded, contain rich meta-data about 11 thousand speakers, and are linguistically annotated following the Universal Dependencies formalism and with named entities. Samples of the corpora and conversion scripts are available from the project’s GitHub repository, and the complete corpora are openly available via the CLARIN.SI repository for download, as well as through the NoSketch Engine and KonText concordancers and the Parlameter interface for on-line exploration and analysis.

En este capítulo se plantea un estudio exploratorio de corpus acerca de la representación del COVID-19 tal y como se emplea este término en las versiones en inglés y español de la Wikipedia. Recurriendo a presupuestos teóricos de corte neofirthiano (McEnery y Hardie, 2012), en el presente trabajo se compilan y analizan los corpus WIKICOVID-EN y WIKICOVID-ES, haciendo especial hincapié en el comportamiento de sus palabras clave. Tras una breve introducción en la que se exponen los motivos por los que se acomete el capítulo, se presentan, en el apartado 1, los estudios del discurso asistidos por corpus, que alumbran esta investigación. En el apartado 2, se describen los corpus examinados y se desgranan los objetivos, hipótesis, métodos y herramientas elegidos. En el apartado 3, se plantean los resultados y se reflexiona en torno a los mismos. El apartado 4 concluye con una recapitulación global del trabajo y de los efectos dispares de las representaciones del COVID-19 en la Wikipedia (en inglés y en español), con vistas a futuros trabajos (docentes). El capítulo se cierra con una coda (en el apartado 5), en la que se recuerda a todas aquellas personas que han volcado sus esfuerzos en ayudar a la población durante la pandemia.

This paper focuses on the understanding of visual rhetorical figures as they appear in today's globalized advertising. A sound theoretical model (i.e., Phillips and McQuarrie 2004) is first reviewed to select a good representative sampling (i.e., 9 advertisements) of the behaviour domain measured. Then, a population of 60 English language students are questioned regarding these 9 advertisements. This study uses a combined methodology, resorting to basic quantitative data to reveal qualitative findings. Our discussion supports prior research (Callister and Stern 2008: 148) indicating that culture is essential for image understanding in a crosscultural environment and stands in opposition to those who act on the assumption that visuals are universal and therefore understandable in all cultures of the world (Levitt 1983)

The present paper proposes a CADS-based analysis of European Parliament speeches, by merging (C)DA theoretical constructs (inspired byLaclau and Mouffe 1985) and CL tools. In this fashion, the European Comparable and Parallel Corpus of Parliamentary Speeches Archive (ECPC) is examined along synchronic and diachronic, quantitative and qualitative lines, in an inductive study that commutes from the micro-text to the macro-context.

Much good work on Translation Studies (TS) has concentrated on the verbal text. Nevertheless, in our post-modern world, multi-modality is exploited to the maximum, as advertising shows. In turn, hyper-textuality is also a common feature of today’s advertising messages. Furthermore, both multi-modality and hyper-textuality are ideologically designed not only to sell products but to promote entire ways of life. In its second section, the present paper draws on Van Leeuwen (1993), Gastil (1992) and Kress and Van Leeuwen (1998) to approach the notion of multi-modality. It also draws on Askehave and Nielsen (2004) to study hyper-textuality in general and structural/associative links in particular. These theoretical proposals are then applied (in sections 3 and 4) to four translated or translation-related ads on paper and/or on electronic format. Drawing on theoretical approaches to personal/group behaviour, and informed by Michael Hoey’s priming theory, this paper presents a corpus-assisted discourse study of European Parliament interventions from 2004 to 2011. The study aims to identify the group in the self and the various selves in the individual. For the analysis, three corpora from the European Comparable and Parallel Corpus Archive are explored: EP_EN (with EP interventions: 26,959,446 tokens), HC (with House of Commons interventions: 70,567,728), and SandD_david_martin (with member of European Parliament – MEP – David Martin’s interventions: 116,781). The main tool of analysis is the keyword, as generated by WordSmith 7.0. This article is set within today's globalized market, where monocultural studies are no longer informative enough. It is built upon, among others, Phillips and McQuarrie's exhaustive taxonomy of the visual, which tangentially refers to the existence of moderating factors with an impact on (mis)comprehension. The article focuses precisely on the role of these factors when they affect a population of cross-cultural subjects, who are prone to be exposed to “globally received” advertising. The data discussed here point to the fact that in cross-cultural advertising, (mis)comprehension is affected not only by the complexity or richness of figuration, but also (and mainly) by the schema component. Results also shows that verbal anchoring plays an essential role in the interpretation of visual figures.

Drawing both on Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) and prior, manual research on parliamentary communication, this paper proposes and applies an analytical protocol to examine EP speeches. Although these are disseminated in various forms and through dissimilar means (e.g., live at the EP; the audiovisual format via streaming or recorded videos; or published as parliamentary proceedings), here we focus on proceedings – one of the EP’s main sources of official representation. Following the EP’s (unique) practice, where official proceedings do not distinguish between original and translated speeches but consider all texts of equal (legal) status, this study delves into all speech production in English, without separating source and target texts. The present paper revolves around the notions of hypermodality and translation under the current globalizing scenario. The first section of the paper presents a basic framework of analysis devised within multimodal/hypertextual paradigms, drawing mainly on Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996), Lemke (2002), Lim (2004), Cheong (2002), Askehave and Nielsen (2004), among others. The second section applies this framework to the study of electronic ‘translational material’. Thus, section 2 is devoted to a set of webpages devised by Procter and Gamble, which play the role of new electronic forms of advertising. These webpages result from a combination of different kinds of translational processes which are discussed at some length with the help of the hypermodal framework proposed earlier. In short, the present paper places itself in the midst of our current globalized (i.e. dematerialized) environment – where technical advances result in new textual typologies, where there is an increasing exchange of translation material and where cross cultural hypermodality simply cannot be avoided.

In fact, Aristotle himself argued that the aim of rhetoric was not just to persuade but to find the best methods of persuasion (Aristotle, Retorica, ed. 1990). These methods have been frequently used in advertising, where they are employed to capture the consumer’s attention and, consequently, to sell the advertised product. However (despite the frequent appearance of rhetorical figures in advertising), there is a scarcity of studies on the role of these persuasive mechanisms in the translation of publicity. Tras 25 años, los estudios de traducción e interpretación basados en corpus (ETBC) son un campo de investigación interdisciplinar bien establecido en todo el mundo cuyo crecimiento va de la mano de avances tecnológicos que permiten diseñar, crear y compartir corpus monolingües y multilingües (orales, escritos y multimodales) como recursos para la investigación teórica, descriptiva y aplicada en los estudios de traducción e interpretación. Creemos que es el momento oportuno de hacer una pausa y reflexionar sobre los logros y las carencias de este variado ámbito de la erudición y la práctica con el fin de mirar al futuro con renovada confianza y conciencia de los retos que nos esperan. Its growth goes hand in hand with technological advancements, which make it possible to design, create and share monolingual and multilingual spoken, written and multimodal corpora as resources for theoretical, descriptive and applied research in both translation and interpreting studies. It is built upon, among others, Phillips and McQuarrie's exhaustive taxonomy of the visual, which tangentially refers to the existence of moderating factors with an impact on (mis)comprehension. In July 2011, the European Parliament (EP) stopped providing a written translation of its proceedings. Some years later, it seems apposite to look back and ask: What is kept and what is lost without the EP translating? To answer this question, the present paper adopts the first (Modern Diachronic) Corpus-Assisted Discourse Analysis Study (MD-CADS) carried out within Translation Studies by drawing on the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) and Corpus Linguistics (CL) tools. Hence, along DHA lines, the paper proceeds from texture through strategies to content by focusing on CL key keywords and detailed consistency. It performs analysis upon the European Comparable and Parallel Corpus (ECPC) archive, compiled at the Universitat Jaume I (Spain). This study shows that MD-CADS is a potential source of data for triangulation with other more qualitative approaches.

The present paper proposes a CADS-based analysis of European Parliament speeches, by merging (C)DA theoretical constructs (inspired by Laclau and Mouffe 1985 ) and CL tools. In this fashion, the European Comparable and Parallel Corpus of Parliamentary Speeches Archive (ECPC) is examined along synchronic and diachronic, quantitative and qualitative lines, in an inductive study that commutes from the micro-text to the macro-context.

El siguiente trabajo se propone ofrecer a los estudiantes de posgrado una compilación de problemas habituales en Traducción Institucional, especialmente cuando se trabaja para organismos internacionales. Los ejemplos enumerados incluyen errores frecuentes de traducción, y algunas estrategias o procedimientos más adecuados para resolverlos.      Los ejemplos incluidos en esta guía, casi en su totalidad, corresponden a traducciones reales corregidas en este programa de Máster por las profesoras del curso.
  Para facilitar el ordenamiento, la guía se organiza según tres criterios:
Problemas Estructurales; Problemas Estilísticos, y Problemas Documentales.

Interconnectedness in technologically enhanced learning environments has allowed traditional translation classrooms to empower their students and foster new participatory frameworks based on collaboration, growth, and shared understanding of professional and community practices. In this highly technological scenario, Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia, stands as one of the best-known and most successful examples of non-professional online collaboration around the world, offering an interesting breeding ground for translator trainees to develop self-reflective, critical spaces where they can engage in constant dialogue with other communities of translator trainees around the globe. With the purpose of helping expand Wikipedia in languages other than English while socialising inter-cultural agents through real discursive practices, the educational network “Teaching translation via Wikipedia” was born, gathering higher education institutions and translation classrooms in countries such as Spain, Oman, Poland, Malaysia or Algeria. United in diversity, this paper argues that a platform like Wikipedia may be an effective channel to transform the translation classroom and turn it into an emancipatory space where diverse knowledges co-exist, thrive, and enrich each other while forging future generations of translations and helping democratise knowledge around the globe.
