A technology assessment of ESWL for renal stones has been conducted. The development of lithotripsy during the early phase of diffusion of the technique was studied retrospectively for 1985 and 1986. This study permitted the comparison of lithotripsy practice in Paris with that in Lyon. Results show that the proportion of small (less than 10 mm) stones increased from 39% at the beginning of the period to 60% at the end in Paris and simultaneously from 41% to 53% in Lyon. The location of the calculi treated by ESWL changed significantly over the period, but only in Paris where the number of caliceal stones went from 62% to 38% and that of ureteral stones from 1% to 8%. Neither the number of stones treated during one ESWL session, nor the length of hospital stay, changed significantly during the first years of use of this treatment. However, if one excludes hospital stays of more than 15 days, the average hospital stay in Paris decreased where as the opposite was observed in Lyon. The impact of the organization of ESWL users upon medical practice is obvious in relation to the size of stones: in Lyon, where one team provides ESWL therapy for all hospital urology departments, treatment practice is more homogeneous than in Paris and more closely a resembles the international consensus.

This paper examines the limits to adoption of open innovation (OI) within SMEs in an in-ternational context. In-depth interviews were conducted with managers at 40 Canadian SMEs that operate internationally. The results show that these limits are a function of in-ternational distance, which has cultural, institutional, economic, and geographic dimen-sions. We also found that individual factors (international experience, communication, personal values), organisational factors (economic sector, size, international seniority, international entry mode, available resources, dynamic capabilities, organisational culture), and contextual factors (laws and regulations) can increase or decrease the impact of cultural, institutional, economic, or geographic distance. We contribute to the OI literature by describing the limits to OI in an international context. These findings will help managers identify the limits to their use of international OI, as well as the factors that strengthen or mitig...

This paper investigates the linkages and influences between the open innovation paradigm and e-government research. To this end, an analysis of the e-government literature is carried out to understand how open innovation has been interpreted by e-government scholars, and to identify the key characteristics of open innovation adopted in the public sector. An analysis of open government initiatives in Canada is carried out to understand their compliance with some of the characteristics of open innovation from the management literature. We assess the fitness between management theory and practice.

Abstract. This paper presents a theoretical taxonomy of academic-industry research centers based on the motivations of government actors, industry practitioners and academics to create such groups, the structure of these collaborations, as well as their formal and informal outputs. This taxonomy can be seen as a tool for improved theory building by providing a framework for further research. Additional, it provides insight for policy makers and members of these groups to improve the effectiveness of their collaborations. Keywords. Academic- ...

ABSTRACT Nespresso is one of the most successful and innovative ventures in the consumer product industry in recent decades. Yet, it remains relatively understudied. The purpose of this paper is to provide an integrative insight into the ‘Nespresso model’. We focus on a firm-centric research strategy that is anchored in a systematic review of the academic literature. We find that Nespresso’s model is highly integrated and is configured towards delivering superior value at every step, including logistics. Implications for academics are that firm-centric research may bring unique industrially relevant insights. Managers will find novel ways of leveraging their firm’s strategic advantages.

This paper develops linkages and bilateral influences between the “open innovation” paradigm and research in Public Administration. To this end, the article aims to investigate the different areas of interest of the Public Administration literature to understand how scholars in the field have interpreted open innovation, further identifying the key characteristics of open innovation adopted in the public sector, with a specific focus on e-government, digital governance, and their impact on public management. We perform a literature review from 1995 to 2016, connecting and integrating the Management and Public Administration literatures on open innovation, currently mostly developed in silos, considering topics such as inclusive management, organizational control mechanisms, information use and production, and the dynamics of value creation and production for open innovation in the public sector. We anticipate that the results will help draw new avenues of research for academic resea...

ERP systems have long been known for their significant impacts on the adopting companies, irrespective of size and industry. To better understand and to maximize the positive impacts, ERP research has mostly focused on the selection, evaluation and implementation stages. Failure rates, however, indicate that post- implementation is another essential stage for ERP projects success. Based on a qualitative research design using case-study methodology, this study investigates the determinants of ERP assimilation success during the post-implementation stage. A comparison between three Canadian manufacturing companies is made. A set of lessons learned based on this analysis are presented.

PurposeThe study aims to explore the critical approaches adopted by innovative organizations and to build an environment of trust between the multiple stakeholders collaborating for new product development (NPD).Design/methodology/approachA qualitative research approach is adopted in this study. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts from the wood product industry in Quebec, Canada. These organizations have successfully adopted the latest technological developments and have developed a strong collaboration with their stakeholders.FindingsThe study identified eleven strategies for the innovative organizations that included early involvement of the stakeholders in the design process, developing long-term relationships and fostering a transparent environment using Industry 4.0 technologies. A novel framework for using this strategy is presented with three stages of application, namely, planning, enactment and review.Practical implicationsInter-organizational col...

Diffusion of innovation is a key challenge for organizations; it brings social change that alters a system's structure and how it operates. Most of the studies in this area have focused on the information and communication technologies sector (ICT). In this paper, we have sought to understand the acceptance and use of wood-based technology in the non-residential construction sector. For this purpose, we conducted a web survey of 28 engineers in Quebec's construction industry. Upon examining the survey results using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) theory, we have proposed a conceptual framework specific to the use of wood in non-residential construction and identified the main similarities and differences according to the basic UTAUT model. We have also identified some constraints regarding the use of wood-based technology.

ABSTRACT Governments are providing their citizens with more and more electronic services. However, little is known about how e-government services are appropriated in outlying regions. In this paper, we analyze the needs and barriers to e-government through the lenses of managers in these regions. To this end, an exploratory research is undertaken in four outlying regions of Quebec, Canada. The focus is on the adoption of e-government services through a "bottom-up" approach. We describe how these services are perceived by public and parapublic organizations in order to offer solutions designed for outlying regions. In general, when designing online services, a range of social, economic, and demographic factors need to be taken into account. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

There is increasing interest in new research relationships in the form of university-industry partnerships, by governments, universities, intermediary organisations and industry. These collaborations create value, however the value perceived, created and captured by the different actors in the innovation value network are different. However, based on the literature we can say that these values have to be present for all actors, at each phase, for the innovation process to continue. This paper presents a framework that illustrates a multi-actor view of the innovation process and associated values. It is hoped that this matrix can lead to new insight for researchers, practitioners and policy makers to manage better the innovation value network by facilitating the five phases of the innovation value network: policy making and grant process, idea generation and basic research, knowledge and technology development, knowledge and technology transfer and application of knowledge and techno...

ABSTRACT Career development contributes towards (i) answering fundamental concerns regarding the need for human resources planning in a virtual corporation; (ii) satisfying this need through human resources recruitment; (iii) putting emphasis on skills during human resources evaluation; and (iv) expanding those skills with training. This paper shows how career development represents a route that should be privileged as far as these contributions are concerned

Aussi, cette forme d'internationalisation n'a pas eu d'impacts organisationnels notables sur les PME quebecoises et seul un tiers de ces alliances ont connu un succes.
