The origin and development of the toponymic locative suffix -(h)egi and its allomorph
-tegi are well known and have been analyzed in several studies. However, -legi has
attracted far less attention. Here we argue that -legi is not an independent suffix, but an
allomorph of -(h)egi originating in the sequence root ending in -l + -(h)egi, which must
have been reanalyzed as root + -legi, aided by resyllabification. Moreover, we contend
that the base for the toponym Irulegi goes back to the common noun irun meaning
‘defensive stronghold’ and which is found in other place names like Irun and Irunberri.

This paper explains the etymology of surnames of Basque origin borne by North American (American, Canadian), Puerto Rican and Philippine rulers past and present. The study is thus conceived as a complementary addition to the analysis of Basque surnames in Latin American countries carried out a decade ago. These family names were created in the language called euskara, in the Basque Country (Europe), but at present they are also found in the New World, since they were brought there by Basque migrants bearing the surnames in question. Among the relevant sources of the family names under study here two may be particularly mentioned: toponyms in the fi rst place and house names in the second, albeit the latter mainly derive from what we have called «house nicknames», which subsequently changed into family names. To the extent possible, we have related each surname whose origin is oikonymic or toponymic to its place of origin, i.e., to the house or place where it was created.

Regarding the Basque toponymic system : anthrotoponyms. In this work we carry out an analysis of Basque anthrotoponyms, starting with the names of the Basque regions. We then mention a number of items (mostly dona, done) that are used in the formation of our hagiotoponyms. We also examine in detail the endings and suffixes found in place names with an anthroponymic basis, relating them to their corresponding Romance variants. Following this we deal with villa, a Latin or Romance common noun analogous to Basque huri, both of which frequently go together with anthroponymic bases. To conclude we draw some conclusions from the claims made in the article.A propos du système toponymique basque : les anthrotoponymes. Dans cet article, nous analysons les anthrotoponymes d’origine basque, et notamment les noms des régions basques. Nous citons ensuite, un certain nombre d’éléments (principalement dona, done) entrant dans la formation des hagiotoponymes. Nous examinons aussi les finales et les suffixes de noms de lieux composés d’une base anthroponymique, en les mettant en relation avec leurs équivalents romans. En este trabajo se explica la etimología de los apellidos de origen
vasco de los gobernantes norteamericanos (canadienses, estadounidenses), puertorriqueños y filipinos del pasado y presente. Este estudio está concebido, así pues, como una nueva contribución al análisis de apellidos vascos en países de Centroamérica y América del Sur realizado hace una década. Los apellidos en cuestión se originaron en la lengua vasca, en Vasconia (Europa), pero en la actualidad se pueden encontrar también en el Nuevo Mundo, ya que fueron llevados allí por los emigrantes vascos portadores de los mismos. Entre las fuentes relevantes de los apellidos aquí sometidos a análisis podemos mencionar especialmente dos: los topónimos y los nombres de casa, si bien estos últimos generalmente proceden de los que hemos llamado «sobrenombres oiconímicos», convertidos posteriormente en apellidos. En la medida de lo posible, hemos relacionado cada apellido de origen oiconímico o toponímico con su lugar de origen, con la casa o el sitio en el que se creó.

A Descriptive Analysis of Basque Hypocoristics In this article we explain the patterns that are and were used for hypocoristization in Basque, in addition to providing a definition of the term «hypocoristic» and mentioning some terminology problems on the matter. This article has been written from an onomastics point of view, but the works by some phonologists who have written about pet names are also taken into account. We similarly deal with hypocoristics from other languages, especially those from Spanish, insofar as they can help us understand Basque hypocoristics. The mentioned patterns used by Basque are essentially three: palatalization, suffixation and name shortening. Nevertheless, a combination of two of the previous patterns is also possible, although shortened names that contain suffixes are infrequent. Place names of Alava with anthroponymical bases and ending in -(i)ano In this article we proceed with the analysis and study of Alavese deanthroponymic toponyms, i.e. place-names based on person-names begun mostly in the works of 2012 and 2012b. It is to be understood that in the origin of the toponyms ended in -(i)ano (or -(i)anu) lies a name such as ager or fundus that was dropped early in time. Most variants display a suffix -io, although some present a suffix -ino, due, as we believe, to the divergent nasalization of the vowels preceding the original intervocalic nasal, before the latter was dropped. Cases like Amurrio, Baranbio, Zerio and others have preserved solely the Basque forms, whereas others do not present the expected Basque.

–aka. Parto siempre de una base antroponímica con sufijo latino femenino
–ica, de *(te˘rra, villa) cernica, *(te˘rra, villa) sontica en los dos casos señalados,
de los que se ha elidido la parte inicial. De esta manera intento también dar
una explicación etimológica a algunos de los topónimos en –nga, -nka, -ngo,
como Zeranga, Karanka o Durango. Además de los mencionados, se examina
una serie de topónimos que no habían sido explicados hasta el presente, tomando

In this article the authors first of all show the positions in which aspiration can appear within the word in Basque. Hereafter they explain which restrictions this sound is subject to and, after touching on the views of the few linguists for whom aspiration is not etymological and considering its non-random character as established, they make a list of the sources aspiration comes from. Subsequently they discuss its loss and consider to what extent the major Alavese toponymy, which is rich in hs, agrees or disagrees with the current data and with the various authors’ claims. A number of historical toponyms from Gipuzkoa and La Rioja that bear the grapheme are likewise taken into consideration. Finally, as a conclusion, the possibility is referred to of encompassing most of the developments that converge in aspiration in Basque into one and only phenomenon, as well as pointing out the importance of the use of onomastic, dialectal and typological data for the study of our language.

RESUMEN Analizamos aquí algunos nombres de pueblo de Navarra y establecemos que, cuando pueden ser incluidos en una serie toponímica, la explicación etimológica que se da es más fiable. Los hemos clasificado en dos grupos: primero los acabados en -oi(t)z, -o(t)z, y después los que terminan en -i(t)z. Estudiamos la relación que la toponimia tiene con la patronimia, dado que ambos sistemas proceden del genitivo de la tercera Declinación del latín (-nis). En las conclusiones afirmamos que los topónimos investigados son deantroponímicos, unos más antiguos que otros, y que el sufijo es -(i)(t)z. Proponemos utilizar los más claros como «topónimos ancla», con el objeto de aclarar otros más oscuros, y los relacionamos con la romanización, ya que muchos de los antropónimos que están en la base proceden del mundo del latín, si bien la evolución de dichos topónimos es eusquérica. En este artículo hacemos un estudio de los topónimos alaveses que presentan
como formante huri o villa ‘propiedad’, ‘población’, y que tienen como base
un nombre personal, en la mayoría de los casos de origen latino, si bien hay
un par (Herramell(i), Obeko) de procedencia discutida. El nombre villa puede
aparecer al principio del topónimo o al final del mismo; huri, en cambio,
va siempre pospuesto. Por otro lado, villa acompaña en general a un nombre
que en origen era genitivo, y solo en el caso de Villabezana va acompañado
de un antropónimo más el sufijo -ana, hecho que nos da pie a pensar que
también en otros casos como Baternia / Paterniana había un nombre villa que
se elidió. Al analizar Okerruri nos ocupamos brevemente del orden nombre +
adjetivo vs. adjetivo + nombre en los topónimos.

En este artículo profundizamos en la explicación etimológica de los nombres de los pueblos del valle de Gesalatz, incluido este último. Intentamos dar, igualmente, la explicación etimológica de los nombres de los despoblados seguros o supuestos del valle. Para la identificación de los posibles desolados hemos tenido en cuenta los datos documentales, la estructura del nombre y su terminación. De manera breve, podemos decir que hemos aclarado el origen de la mayoría de los nombres estudiados, pero que todavía queda alguno totalmente oscuro y algún otro que puede ser explicado solo de manera parcial.
