The escalating number of bilingual schools in Spain has provoked an unsustainable demand of field professionals. As a result, higher education is implementing bilingual teacher training programs at the bachelor level, which are aimed at preparing primary education teachers for bilingual contexts. These degrees usually train prospective educators from a linguistic standpoint and may not guide students in methodological principles that promote successful integration of subject and language work. A shift of focus on the training of these future teachers could be adopted based on the development of student teachers’ linguistic and methodological professional capacities in order to qualify them to be successfully incorporated in a bilingual professional context. This study analyzes the implementation of a framework of collaboration between university teachers and experienced bilingual teachers.

In recent years the concept of digital narrative or Digital Storytelling has become one of the most effective techniques for educational systems. This, although being a classic theme, has recently been revitalized with the ease of making digital stories with current technologies, mainly by the profusion of tools accessible on the Internet under the Cloud Computing paradigm and the high integration of them, for their design, creation, publication and other actions that these well-known new technologies allow and, even more important, the communicative power that the multimedia elements provide to a classic story. Although there have been several and important efforts to structure the production of digital stories, analyzing the key points that the digital multimedia formats provide to the narrative and focusing on those emotional aspects or the research and synthesis skills that students develop, there are not any concrete systematized experience on how to use Digital Storytelling in...

Summary: George Ticknor, author of a History of Literature that covers the period from early 18th century to the XIX, has influenced in later literature manuals, and therefore in the official literary canon. In response to the European Union’s call for the promotion of linguistic diversity and multilingualism among its member states at various levels, the Teacher Training College at the Universidad de Extremadura in Spain launched a bilingual track in its primary education degree. The track has four main goals: Increasing graduates’ English language proficiency and knowledge of English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching methods and techniques, fostering intercultural communication, and augmenting the internationalization of the program. Save the first one, these are also the goals of the Bilingual Authorization and the M.A. in Bilingual Education at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Despite noticeable differences in their respective courses of study, student bodies, and graduates’ future job opportunities, existing similarities between the programs encouraged the authors to conduct a comparative study of their main components: Background, goals, curricula, and requirements for graduation, while granting special consideration to necessary variations in design and implementation. The findings of the study may benefit the global educational community in the field of bilingual teacher preparation by contributing to a better understanding of similarities and range of variations across programs sharing similar goals, despite their implementation in distant locations.

The present paper analyses the development and results of an online postgraduate training course addressed to pre-service teachers from different educational fields who aim to be trained in intercultural matters. The mentioned course was implemented in 2013–2014 at the University of Extremadura. Discussion groups and log books were used from a qualitative methodology. Seven faculty members and 16 graduate students coming from eight different training modules participated in the study. A number of comparative categories among the modules that allowed the development of a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) matrix were established. Results demonstrate that the online graduate training was especially beneficial to generate skills that will support potential teachers when facing intercultural classes. Nevertheless, there are still some facets related to internal teacher's coordination on content and activities that will be enhanced in future sessions of the course.

The study presented in this paper is part of a broader research aimed to analyse possibilities of synchronous tools, such as synchronous virtual classroom, which promote strategic cooperative among students in higher education. Therefore, the study searches the utility of this tool, used in e-learning methodology, within a blended learning context. The main objective then is to present a cooperative learning proposal useful to enhance the teaching/learning process, assessment included. Virtual synchronous classrooms are new resources that promote a collaborative learning through videoconference, shared desktop and files, synchronous white board, presentations, etc. which allow a cooperative learning context.
