OPEN ACCESS BOOK: https://doi.org/10.17885/heiup.1176

This volume presents the first pan-Mediterranean
panorama of Late Antique mortuary practices, combining
and contextualizing an abundant dataset of
archaeological and epigraphic evidence. In 17 contributions,
a group of international specialists discusses
funerary evidence from 14 Late Antique landscapes,
in order to show the high diversity of microregional
and local customs in funerary cultures as well as the
significance of global trends. In this volume various
new methodological approaches are applied: the materiality
of epitaphs and tombs, their visibility, their
accessibility, their perception, their setting within
shifting spatial environments, as well as their crucial
role within social practices. Therefore, this book fundamentally
reshapes our understanding of mortuary
habits and the commemoration of the dead during
the transitional phase of the Long Late Antiquity.

It is planned as a hybrid event, which all of you are warmly invited to join.

Abstract:
Painted cycles based on the Akathistos represent one of the great novelties of late Byzantine art, translating a by then already ancient piece of liturgical music into the world of visual art. However, even though the Akathistos Hymn to the Virgin Mary has been studied quite extensively, the relationship between its text, music, and illustrations has not yet been fully explored.
Building on the Akathistos Hymn, the planned conference will examine late Byzantine intermedial compositional processes. Painted cycles based on the Akathistos should be studied as a product of the interaction between hymnography, psalmody, and visual art - not just as a mere visualisation of a text. Illuminated and notated manuscript copies of the hymn ought to be examined as evidence for varied liturgical and devotional practices. Icons and murals that illustrate the Akathistos need to be seen as constituent elements of sacred space. At the same time, the broader social and religious context(s) for the hymn’s use during the late Byzantine period need to be considered.
Methodologically, the conference will have as its focus the concept of intermediality, that is, the interface between various media of cultural expression. The organisers hope that it will contribute towards bridging the methodological gaps that separates various scholarly approaches to the study of medieval culture.

Funerary practices and epitaphs are a central research field of Classical Studies. Especially in times of social, political and religious change, evidence from the tombs and their surroundings is a key factor in our understanding of continuity and transformation processes on multiple cultural levels. Late Antiquity was doubtlessly one of such transitional phases. However, research on burial practices and tomb inscriptions of this period is still very uneven. Although hundreds of necropoleis, coemeterial churches and individual tombs are known across the Late Antique World, a holistic documentation including epigraphic, iconographic, spatial and social analysis, as well as anthropological examination and natural scientific data, is mostly lacking.
Through this conference we would like to undertake a start to fill some lacunae on Late Antique funerary research. First, we will try to link as many disciplines as possible in order to draw a more complete picture of sepulchral habits of Late Antiquity as it hitherto has been done. Secondly, we intend to give – for the first time – a Mediterranean-wide overview on Late Antique funerary landscapes, not only examining global trends, but also local and regional habits. Thirdly, we want to illustrate the potential of new contextual approaches; questions on the materiality and design of epitaphs and tombs, their visibility, perception and accessibility will be central guidelines of our conference.

Strolling through Cilicia -
New Research on Roman and Late Antique CIlicia

This project consists of a workshops series focussing on Roman and Late Antique Cilicia which is going to take place in the Fall and Spring Semesters of 2021-22. The main goal is to digitally bring together scholars from North America, Europe and Turkey, regardless of the career stage (graduate students to professors), and tackle one specific topic during each of these workshops.
The project intends to improve scholarly exchange and become a platform where investigators can get feeback on current research projects, ideally even leading to further collaboration. Each workshop will incorporate three or four papers centered around its main theme, it will take about 2,5 hours. A publication is not planned.
