Tartufari parla qu...

Reading this work against both the theater’s expansion into the realm of social experience (Grotowski) and performance art’s pursuit of self-awareness through live action ( Settimana della Performance , Bologna, 1977), Marfoglia argues that Rame’s work similarly aims to liberate the female body from oppressively gendered representation by attacking social and linguistic structures in the plot of the monologue.

For many centuries stories were mostly consumed by listening to someone reciting or reading them aloud: they were essentially performances rather than the silent reading experiences that have become the default in our literate societies. This books reminds us that the written word is also the spoken word and that relations between page and stage, literature and performance, constitute a dynamic two-way street. Drawing on multiple theoretical and methodological approaches, the volume includes essays on Boccaccio, Manzoni, Pirandello, Campanile, De Filippo, Fo, Gadda, Vittorini, Consolo, Sciascia, Testori and Racco.

The play was first performed in 1937. The text is marked by a distinctive binary structure, emblematically corresponding to the two main characters. On the one hand, there is the main character of the main plot line, Crispucci, who has to decide whether or not to accept the inheritance of his suddenly deceased wife; on the other hand, there is the main character of a parallel but latent plot line, namely the woman in question. Specifically , while the main character seems to be Crispucci, the real driver of the plot is his dead wife, who never physically appears. Indeed, she is only mentioned by other characters and her salient traits are uncovered little by little during the narration. Hence, while the readers or spectators seemingly witness a plot line whose main character is the man, they are actually participating in the other plot line at the same time. This paper aims to show how the character of the woman is constructed both in the short story and in the play, and how consumers of the text are involved in this process.

(ANTONELLO FABIO CATERINO – FRANCESCA FAVARO)
