This paper aims to show that these are not two distinct plays, but rather a self-translation, even though this practice is never mentioned in the paratext. After a contrastive study of the structure and themes of both texts, we will compare and analyze them in order to highlight the strategies for rewriting the self set up by the author in this process.

Starting from a resume of the most important theoretical issues of the practice of Self-translation, we analyzed all books published on this subject in the last five years (2013-2018), underlying the new directions of research and the new perspectives opened. Furthermore, we focused on the Italian contribution to this field of studies, from 2010 to 2018, showing the original point of view of Italian researchers and of Italian context. In the end, we highlighted the dominant tendencies in self-translation studies and we tried to draft its priorities and the research fields that should be encouraged.

This novel marks a transitional phase in Lakhous’ literary production, before he begins to write directly in Italian, and can be considered as a first attempt at writing for a new audience. Alternating between fiction and auto-fiction, Scontro di civiltà paints an amusing and discreet portrait of Italian multicultural society, the author’s new surroundings. Still, Algeria is not completely absent from the text; through Amedeo, the main character, the author is able to recall the civil war that forced him to leave his homeland. In this essay, I will analyse the narration of the Self that Lakhous proposes in the two versions of the novel, focusing at first on the linguistic contamination between the author’s languages, and then on the representations of Italy and Algeria found in the text.

Every self-translation can actually be considered a hybrid heterolinguistic work created by two texts in two different languages. This study examines the theatrical play Junun of the Tunisian playwright Jalila Baccar, written and played in Tunisian Arabic in 2001 and self-translated into French in 2003. At first, the functions of the different languages in the Arabic text have been analysed. These can stem from a realistic motivation (representing Tunisian reality), from a compositional motivation (constructing the literary work’s fictional world), or from an esthetic motivation (through intertextual references to other works). Subsequently, the translation strategies of the heterolingualism from the first text to the French version have been studied. Finally, this textual approach has been framed within the analysis of the relationship between context and the history of heterolingualism, in order to broaden the scope of potential extensions of this research.
