The rapidly changing reality, which has been influenced by the development of technology and the industrial revolution since the nineteenth century, has largely weakened the teaching profession and the form and type of professional certification. This weakening also devaluates the idea of citizenship, which is largely conveyed during the education process. Contemporary education (4.0) is focused on practical education, where the space for shaping attitudes and creating behaviour patterns is marginalised. The relationship between education and industry related to socialisation and culture-forming processes is part of the development of individuals in societies and part of a broader formal development plan for different types of state and national organisations. The processes of systemic changes in education do not always keep up with the changing social, political and economic situation. The authors of this article indicate how the teacher education process looked in the past, throug...

The scientific origins and the development of eugenic and racial theoriesformulated by physicians, jurists and intellectuals since the early twentieth century have only recently attracted scholarly attention. However, the dissemination of eugenic measures regarding the social policy that Greek interwar governments implemented to protect the health of mothers and children still remains an underresearched topic. Our contribution presents the main points of the discussion about the relation of eugenics and puericulture and traces its development among paediatricians in the 1920s and 1930s. It further looks into the stakes, the ambivalent attitude and the eugenic proposals of both liberal and authoritarian governments concerning the protection of childhood and motherhood as well as into their respective demographic policies during the interwar period.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between young people’s citizenship behaviors and their basic personality traits. Three dimensions of citizenship were studied with the use of the model proposed by Zalewska and Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz: (1) passive citizenship, (2) semi-active citizenship, and (3) active citizenship with the following sub-dimensions: political, social, and personal citizenship, and action for change. The Big Five personality traits: (1) Openness to experience (2) Conscientiousness, (3) Extraversion, (4) Agreeableness, and (5) Neuroticism, were evaluated using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO FFI) (Costa & McCrae) or the Big Five Questionnaire (BFQ44) (Capara, Barbaranelli, Borgogni, & Perugini, 1993). The surveyed sample consisted of a total of 3452 girls (N = 1786) and boys (N = 1666) aged 11 (N = 1099), 14 (N = 1192) and 17 (N = 1163) years. The respondents resided in big cities (N = 1561) and small towns (N = 1863) in 10 countries. The participan...

The vital cultural project during the nineteenth century was the formation of an authoritative version of the national consciousness that serve to homogenise the disparate populations of newly independent greece. Three towering intellectuals led the way in this process: Markos renieris, spyridon Zambelios and Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos. all three adhered to the since dominant theory of the historical continuity of the greek nation from prehistoric times to the present but held sharply different views concerning the role of greece in the modern world. renieris stressed the european vocation of today’s hellenic culture, given that the foundations of european civilisation were initially hellenic as well. Zambelios put forward an anti-Western view of the nation’s destiny, tinged with theological fanaticism and a mystical historicism. Paparrigopoulos was the consummate historian who emphasised the links between the greek present and the past, chiefly through the medium of language, but...

The integration of immigrant populations is an important issue of political debate in European countries as they search for appropriate arrangements to facilitate integration while remaining mindful of cultural difference. Although promoting inclusive multiculturalism is seen as an important goal of multiethnic Europe, we are conscious that our histories show that acceptance of diversity has not always been self-evident in policy; and that, policy has often been assimilationist in tone, placing periodic demands on immigrants to give up their traditional lifestyles and adopt the dominant living modes in the society to which they have immigrated. The dilemma is often how best to reach the goal of inclusive multiculturalism.

So.

Stimulated by the development of both childhood studies and the social history of medicine, this book contextualizes the historical circumstances that led to the medicalization of childhood in Greece from the end of the nineteenth century until World War II. By examining this issue in the span of fifty years, the authors explore how the national question was entwined with concerns raised about the health of children. They also investigate the various connotations that child health and maternity care carried in the context of liberal and authoritarian governments as well as the wider social and cultural changes that took place during this period. Drawing upon a wide array of primary and secondary sources, they look into the role the initiatives of doctors, social thinkers and state functionaries played in shaping health policy; the impact of medical elites from the western European paradigm; and the gradual professionalization of health care in Greece. The main findings of the analysis regard the ever growing intervention of the state in the medical supervision of childhood, the particular relationship between the philanthropic organizations and the state, as well as the impact the national rivalries and wars had on the intensification of the attempts undertaken for the amelioration of the health of the younger generation

Compared to other European and Balkan countries, the first institutions for the medical inspection of student health were established relatively late in Greece. Following several European and Balkan examples, Greek doctors and educators began an information campaign during the late 19(th) century to establish a School Medical Service. The Greek state's emerging interest in children's health was dependent upon a number of factors. Networks of experts played a considerable part in shaping a public discourse on childhood. National defeats generated a discourse that denounced the state's indifference to the degeneration of the younger generation. Finally, European paradigms may have influenced the establishment of the School Medical Service through the experiences gained abroad by doctors and high state officials.

The aim of the article is to provide an analysis of the introduction of principles of New Education in Greece in the beginning of the twentieth century. It focuses on the influence of this movement on Greek pedagogues, especially on those who had studied in Germany, and who tried afterwards to introduce them in the didactic sphere and in the pedagogical field. Their ideas and principles related to New Education and the School of Work (Arbeitschule) and their way of putting them into practice inside the educational system are analysed, including the creation of a certain curriculum, the way of teaching some courses, and the use of certain educational/didactical methods. It is also intended to show how the most important issues of pedagogy and didactics were developed and analysed by the most important pedagogical journals of this period. Attention is paid mainly to the difficulties faced by those who attempted to introduce this system in Greece with regard to a series of factors that differentiate the Greek paradigm from similar endeavours in other European countries. Among these factors one should mention the problem of the language and the consequent ideological antithesis, and the educational reforms in relation to the sociopolitical situation in Greece during the aforementioned period.
