The perception of the historical event through antithetical schemes – “the Christian world vs Islam”, “civilization vs barbarism” – included rather than avoided the inaccuracies and vagueness of the shaped myth. At the same time, ignored the role, the expectations and the hidden feelings of the less illustrious participants: the multitudes of different competitors, of the inhabitants in the areas near Lepanto and even of the prisoners, of those defeated. What we get from the various official and unofficial written and published “diaries of the naval battle of Lepanto”, is a de-subjectivized conception of the event: the actual historical subjects were doomed to obscurity since the discourse of power was monopolized and finally forced to prevail into public memory. In this brief study, a philosopher of history like Michel Foucault is helping us to move away from the one-dimensional conception of events.

From the very beginning, finding a war horse to buy proved to be a difficult process. The presentation focuses at the key components of the war horse market, their transportation to the Venetian metropolis or towards the Venetian possessions of the Levant, the financial burden of acquiring and maintaining them, and the arrangements made in order to face specific problems. The corpus of the Venetian regulations, laws and directives which aimed to regulate the basic issues concerning war horses of all categories, constitutes a valuable database that provides us with information not only on the state of the army but also on the economic policy of Venice, the relevant ideology as well as the very functioning of the institutions.

The study examines the status of the “Genoese period” of Lesvos, which officially begins with the concession of the island to the Gattelusi family. It deals with the legal framework of the concession as well as the course, extent and nature of the Latin domination in each individual phase of this period in order to capture the critical transitions and, consequently, to picture the historical realities. Based on notarial material of the XV century, the study explores the business activity of the Gattelusi of Lesvos, family strategies, the island’s economic structure and the social stratification. Could we argue that, constant osmosis with the Greek Orthodox element of the island, shared interests with the Palaiologos dynasty and consistent cooperation with the Byzantines, even in a symbolic level, ended up in the emergence of a “hellenic-genoese” self-perception in this corner of the Aegean?

The Archive is small but plays a very important role providing evidence at least for a four-century wide historical research. This paper is based on the Archive’s main series, and on the research for the traces left by people, social groups and their culture, institutions and facts connecting the pre-modern European world and the world of the Greek East. The Archive of the Hellenic Institute complement the documents preserved in the local archives of the territories ruled by Venetians while it joints with the great “matrix-archive”, that is the State Archives in Venice. Its opening to a new era will not only make its content accessible to a widest scientific community; in particular, it will strengthen its position as an archival-cultural centre in a multipolar world of historic research while dealing with the multifarious representations of realities existing in a unique Greek-Venetian space: in other words, the European region.

My paper focuses on representing the postal network between Cyprus and Constantinople – that is, at state level, between Venice and the Sublime Porta. Following the archival traces of a fascinating personality, Leonardo Donà (one of the great Dogi of the Serenissima), I will describe the difficult travel in summer 1556 from Cirenes (Kyrenia) to Constantinople. Together with the postal flows, routes and roads, we will discover the different ethnic groups, communities and cultures of the people living “alli scali” of this travel. It is considered a specific case of the audientia episcopalis, the competence to resolve civil disputes between laymen presented to the bishop’s court. In the Venetian state, after the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, the Orthodox Church needed to apply its jus patriae. However, for Venice, all Orthodox subjects were subject to the Venetian laws and only by concession could the customary law of their homeland be applied. Divorce and the question of mixed marriages are the context in which the greatest controversy occurs, and not only because of the existing divergences in the canon law of both Orthodox, and Latin, doctrines. Examining specific divorce cases, this study focuses on the complementarity that results from the process of resolving marriages in pre-modern Venice and the synergies that may arise on behalf of researchers.

In this study we attempt to identify the forms of temporary or permanent suspension of this right, the terms and conditions constituting the Venetian “legitimacy”, the treatment of any adverse effects caused by the preceding of the public interest to the individuals, particular provisions and all that relevant caseload found in the archival sources. We identify the content of the concept of “public interest” as perceived in the Venetian reggimenti of the Ionian Islands, focusing on Corfu and the wide changes that took place in the landscape of the city and in the lives of the inhabitants after the several interventions made on the defensive front of the island. Moreover, we are looking for the character of restrictions over property rights in the same region. Lastly, we investigate the criteria for granting compensation in cases of forced expropriation and private property confiscation, to conclude about the remarkably modern attitude of the Venetian state towards this issue.

The public interest for the warfare between the western European states and the Ottoman Empire wa... more The public interest for the warfare between the western European states and the Ottoman Empire was revived in the middle 18th century because of the latest military conflicts. Apart from the newspapers ("giornali", "gazette"), civil and military news circulation was supplied from a regular information network that had been developed throughout the Italian peninsula since the second half of the 17th century. Τhe Corfu siege in 1716 occupies a significant part in the war newsfeed trade, due to the island’s increased importance for the Venetian state. We suggest that this printed or handwritten material of military content or origin ("reporti", "ragguagli", "avvisi", "novellari", "quaderni" etc.) could be labeled as "actuelles militaires", a very interesting category of fragile material, which for the most part is lost.
Products of a primitive journalism, hundreds of these "actuelles" came out from Venetian typographers and editors such as Girolamo Albrizzi, Francesco Batti, Giuseppe Prosdocimo and Lorenzo Pittoni. In our short study, we present a two-leaf small-format foglio volante entitled Relazione dei successi dell'assedio, e della liberazione della Piazza di Corfù dal giorno dei 4 luglio sino li 22 agosto 1716. Along with the fogli volanti, military chronicles and diaries of the entire siege were originally copied and later printed or reproduced in various ways (under titles such as "giornale militare", "diario militare", "diaria relazione"). Point of reference for all military chronicles issued the period mentioned, was the "Journal de l’année 1716", which was s also called "Journal du Général Schulenburg". But there were also others: the "Diaria relazione dell’attaco della Piazza di Corfù", the author of which was, presumably, one of the captains of the Venetian fleet; the "Distinta relazione dalle due armate", a diary of the fleet which describes the naval operations in July-August 1716; the "Distinto raguaglio in lettera scritta d’ un marcante francese" or the "Relazione o sia trattato di quanto è successo tra l’armi venete e l’ottomane l’anno 1716", both diaries which speak on behalf of the “cittadini Corfioti”. All these sources end up forming the Venetian narrative leaving a historical fact under the wings of the "memoria perpetua".

The scarce information that we find in the Venetian sources concerning the social status of paroi... more The scarce information that we find in the Venetian sources concerning the social status of paroikoi (villeins, parici) during the Venetian occupation of Cyprus (15th-16th c.) paints a dark picture of the Venetian administration’s aims and measures for the island. It is an undisputed fact that the personal status of parici in Cyprus worsened in comparison to that of the former Luzinian period. This paper closely examines a compelling attempt by Cypriot villeins to point the finger at corrupted administrative officers and to press charges against the feudatari (feudatories). We discuss the social status of this group a few years before the war of 1570-1 and compare this status to that of small landholders on the Venetian mainland within the wider framework of contemporary religious disputes, revolts and the spread of Humanism. Furthermore, we examine the central government’s response alongside the measures taken to protect Venice’s second largest colony against Turkish threats, on the one hand and on the other, in relation to Spanish promises. Cyprus’ economic potential is discussed as well as the position taken by other Cypriot social groups on the villein matter.
This research focuses on the humiliating treatment of a social class forced into submission, a state that eventually became implicit for the villeins. This state was characterized by endless drudgery and humiliation based on an anachronistic sense of human life. However, enforced obedience proved inefficient in preventing individual defections to the enemy, the desertion of entire villages and, on occasion, even more violent reactions from the oppressed. Despite being confined to Europe’s corner, the social phenomenon of the human distress of Cyprus’ parici was analogous to similar events in the heart of the continent. In the end, this phenomenon bore the signs not only of a distress of the Venetian regime itself, but of the distress of a whole socio-political system based upon the human bondage.

The archival material may indeed, sometimes, resemble a well-written novel or inspire one. However, we must not forget that its main function is to document: through facts the context, relations, dynamic processes are revealed; the historical reality is represented in its otherwise impenetrable complexity. The main object of our contribution is not how history sometimes becomes a crime novel; on the contrary, it is how the interpretations of an important court case, in a particular Venetian possession such as the island of Cyprus, may reveal aspects of the situation of both the Orthodox and Latin clergy at the beginning of the 16th century./ Μία δολοφονία, κανένας μάρτυρας, ένας κατηγορούμενος στην ιεραρχία της τοπικής εκκλησίας• και τριγύρω, ο αμφιλεγόμενος ρόλος της αριστοκρατίας, οι διωκτικές αρχές σε αδιέξοδο, η κεντρική κυβέρνηση μπροστά σε ένα πολιτικό πρόβλημα.

However, most of these people were not natives but settlers, of Greek or Albanian ethnotic origin. They settled in Venetian occupied territories of Peloponnese in exactly the same way their ancestors had colonized the lands which once upon a time constituted the domain of the Despotate of Morea, in the early 15th century. The settlement of this type of emigrants from which the Venetians could recruit mercenary troops of the light cavalrymen type, served as a tool for fiscal and security purposes. By combining the pieces of information that the Venetian archival sources give us, we make an effort to unveil the ways by which the sense of the “homeland” is evolved. Since the ethnotic identity was not absolute and the relevant ethnotic groups were not stable as far as their composition was concerned, the process of integration was facilitated by the open, extroverted orientation of the Albanian origin ethnotic groups as well as promoted by the struggle of gaining land in order to survive in the first place; in a second level, the sense of "homeland" was evolved as a point of self determination, a myth of descent which was inevitably accepting other groups as well.
We follow the examples of certain types of stradioti, such as those coming from the social class of the "nobili" (Mormori, Paleologi, Boccali) as well as those who are the leaders of the Albanian origin tribes and the local stratiotai, people coming from the lower social groups who were entering the Venetian army hoping to end up well respected farmers. Social alliances and internal conflicts in the micro-community of the stradioti concerned always land possession. As time went by, it was that feeling of belonging to a place that nourished the sense of “home” for these people who started as adversaries but ended up compatriots of a lost land -in other words, ended up forming a new ethnotic identity which encluded the locals and referred to the common experience.

I documenti d’archivio mostrano il carattere sui generis dell’evoluzione della cavalleria stradiotesca in Dalmazia. Questi documenti costituiscono un caso di studio interessante, sia per la storia delle forze veneziane di difesa sia per le realtà della regione.
The article deals with aspects of the presence of the Mormori family in Chania and is entirely based on unpublished archival sources identified in the Venetian State Archives.

The book uncovers the legal position of the Greek community of Venice during the "formation" period (1558-1601) and the hardly achieved internal social balances through the records of its administrative organs' assemblies (elections and decisions). [Prologue and summaries in greek, text in italian].
Following the previous "formation" period, the second book continues to record the elections and decisions taken by the administrative organs of the Greek Community of Venice (1601-1618). It is a crucial period for the Venetian history during which the priorities of Venice were translated in manifesting broader support, on behalf of the authorities to the Community, a condition which enabled a more active greek presence.
