Specific electronic features have been found in structures consisting of metal oxide layers on silicon substrates upon swift heavy ion irradiation. These features are linked to the appearance of radiation-induced negative differential resistances in the structures. In the reversed bias direction they show high frequency current pulsations at around ∼10kHz frequency. Their amplitude increases with increasing applied voltage. The pulsation frequency also shows a small increase. The current amplitude depends on the ion fluence and flux.

The debates about Hercule Florence (Nice, France, 1804 - Campinas, SP, 1879) as the pioneer in the discovery of the photographic process were based mainly on his manuscripts, since few of his épreuves photographiques (photographic experiments) survived. Technological advances in the last four decades have allowed some of his impressions à la lumière solaire to be subjected to analysis by non-destructive techniques at the Instituto de Física of the Universidade de São Paulo in 2016. It was then possible to broaden knowledge of the materials and procedures used in 1833 to obtain the first photographs of the Americas, six years before the announcement of the discovery of the technique by Louis Daguerre in France.

ABSTRACT Since 2003 the analyses of artistic and cultural heritage objects at LAMFI-USP ( Laboratorio de Analises de Materiais com Feixes Ionicos ), initially restricted to ion beam methods, are growing steadily. Since then, alternative methodologies and procedures have been incorporated to better characterize these objects, which possess distinct physical characteristics and also high cultural and monetary value. The examinations in this kind of objects were expanded to other non-destructive analytical techniques like portable EDXRF (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence) analysis, X-ray radiography, visible photography, UV (ultraviolet) and IR (infrared) light imaging that are helping to better understand these art objects, particularly paintings. These techniques are helping the analyses of the conservation state of the objects and also revealing characteristics of the painter such as underlying drawings, which help understand the creative process of the artist. These new procedures of analysis are aimed to enable better analytic research in archaeology and artistic and cultural heritage objects and to provide results that subsidize authentic investigations of art objects as well as the origin of archaeological artifacts, while stimulating archeometry and “arteometry” research in Brazilian Museums.

Abstract This work applies the X-ray MicroCT imaging technique to discuss the identification and preservation/disturbance conditions of plant remains from the Monte Castelo archaeological site, in Brazil's southwestern Amazonia. A preliminary hypothesis based on external morphological traits and the presence of typical starch grains, associates these materials to the Poaceae caryopsis. Moreover, based on their well-preserved non-charred aspect, mineralization was considered as a possible in-situ preservation process. Data from the X-ray computed microtomography (MicroCT) analysis showed that the internal anatomy of the samples corresponds to another type of fruit, described as a small drupe sharing characters with some Anacardiaceae fruits. Additionally, all studied specimens contain a number of exogenous organic and inorganic elements suggesting the action of some disturbance processes on the Monte Castelo plant material.

ABSTRACT This work describes a computer algorithm for automatic extraction of the energy calibration parameters from a Rutherford Back-Scattering Spectroscopy (RBS) spectrum. Parameters like the electronic gain, electronic offset and detection resolution (FWHM) of a RBS setup are usually determined using a standard sample. In our case, the standard sample comprises of a multi-elemental thin film made of a mixture of Ti-Al-Ta that is analyzed at the beginning of each run at defined beam energy. A computer program has been developed to extract automatically the calibration parameters from the spectrum of the standard sample. The code evaluates the first derivative of the energy spectrum, locates the trailing edges of the Al, Ti and Ta peaks and fits a first order polynomial for the energy-channel relation. The detection resolution is determined fitting the convolution of a pre-calculated theoretical spectrum. To test the code, data of two years have been analyzed and the results compared with the manual calculations done previously, obtaining good agreement.

ABSTRACT The characterization of nitridated steel samples, in special the depth profile of nitrogen, aims to help improving the quality of the surface and to increase the durability of the steel pieces. In this work we used ERDA and NRA to determinate the profile of nitrogen in different sets of stainless steel samples. An incident beam of 35Cl of 56MeV was used for ERDA analysis of a first set of samples. Results indicated an homogeneous distribution for most of the identified elements, with atomic nitrogen concentrations around 2% in the analyzed depth range (0.2μm) and the presence of thin films on the surface (about 50×1015at/cm2), one of C and the other of iron oxide. In a second set of samples, 4.43MeV gamma rays produced from 15N(H,αγ)12C reaction, using an external proton beam of 1.3 MeV, were used to quantify nitrogen concentration. N concentrations of about 0.47% were obtained comparing the gamma production rate of the samples with a referenced material (Stainless steel CRM298 – 0.236% of N in mass) irradiated in the same conditions. Also PIXE analyses were done on both sets of samples in order to identify main elements in the matrix.

Soft-tissue preservation provides palaeobiological information that is otherwise lost during fossilization. In Brazil, the Early Cretaceous Santana Formation contains fish with integument, muscles, connective tissues, and eyes that are still preserved. Our study revealed that soft-tissues were pyritized or kerogenized in different microfacies, which yielded distinct preservation fidelities. Indeed, new data provided the first record of pyritized vertebrate muscles and eyes. We propose that the different taphonomic pathways were controlled by distinct sedimentation rates in two different microfacies. Through this process, carcasses deposited in each of these microfacies underwent different residence times in sulphate-reduction and methanogenesis zones, thus yielding pyritized or kerogenized soft-tissues, and a similar process has previously been suggested in studies of a late Ediacaran lagerstätte.

Irradiation with heavy ions can produce several modifications in the chain structure of polymers. These modifications can be related to scissioning and cross-linking of chemical bonds, which depend on the ion fluence and the density of energy deposited in the material. Stacked thin film Makrofol-KG ® samples were irradiated with 350 MeV Au 26+ ions and FTIR absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the bond changes in the samples. Data on the absorption bands as a function of the fluence indicated a higher probability for simple-bonds scissioning than for double-bonds scissioning and no dependence on the number of double bonds breaking with ion fluence. Since sample irradiation was done in a non-track-overlapping regime, a novel process for double bonds formation is suggested: the excitation of a site in the material by only one incident ion followed by a double bond formation during the de-excitation process.

In this work, several attributes of the internal morphology of drupaceous fruits found in the archaeological site Monte Castelo (Rondonia, Brazil) are analyzed by means of two different imaging methods. The aim is to explore similarities and differences in the visualization and analytical properties of the images obtained via High Resolution Light Microscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography (X-ray MicroCT) methods. Both provide data about the three-layered pericarp (exo-, meso- and endocarp) of the studied exemplars, defined by cell differentiation, vascularisation, cellular contents, presence of sclerenchyma cells and secretory cavities. However, it is possible to identify a series of differences between the information that can be obtained through each of the methods. These variations are related to the definition of contours and fine details of some characteristics, their spatial distribution, size attributes, optical properties and material preservation. The results obtained ...

This study reports the results obtained in the analysis of waste material samples generated by the industries of phosphate fertilizers, in particular, the use of specific filters in a portable X-ray fluorescence system, a simple equipment allowing the characterization, identification and quantification of low concentrations of Th and U (ppm). The industrial byproduct is classified as a Technologically-Enhanced, Naturally-Occurring Radioactive Material - TENORM, and therefore requires monitoring for its radio-toxic activity due to the presence of radioactive thorium and uranium families. From the results obtained, it is concluded that this technique is able to determine the contents of these elements to concentrations of tens of ppm in measurements of about 300 s, and a small sample amount (∼0.1 g).

The level and change in concentration of trace elements in the fluids of a body may be the result and an evidence of alterations in life functions. In the search for trace element alterations in the human body it is necessary to know referenced values for as many elements as possible. In this work, Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) was used to study elemental concentrations in human blood serum of 30 healthy donors. The serum samples were obtained by centrifugation and were micro-pipetted on 10µm thick Nuclepore film for PIXE analysis. The elemental concentrations were calculated relative to an internal yttrium standard added during sample preparation. A total of 9 elements were measured (P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn and Br) in good agreement with literature data. The accuracy of the method was verified analysing reference serum samples from the NIPH-Québec (ICP04S-06 and ICP02S-05). A preliminary statistical analysis indicated a log-normal distribution only for Fe and Cu, while c...

ABSTRACT PTFE foils were irradiated with different ion beams (Xe, Au and U) with energies up to 1.5GeV and fluences between 1×108 and 1×1013ions/cm2 at room temperature. The induced modifications in the polymer were analyzed by FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and XRD. In the FTIR spectra, the CF2 degradation accompanied by the formation of CF3 terminal and side groups were observed. In the UV–Vis spectra, the observed increase in the absorption at UV wavelengths is an indication of polymer carbonization. From XRD, the amorphization of the material was evidenced by the decrease in the intensity of the main diffraction peak. An exponential fit of the intensity of the IR absorption peaks resulted in the following values: 2.9±0.8; 4.5±0.9 and 5.6±0.8nm for the latent track radius after irradiation with Xe, Au and U beams, respectively.
