Presented here is a research prospectus to approach a relatively new phenomenon of big data from a philosophical angle. With a preliminary groundwork completed, this research is in its planning stage. Recognizing that big data, although a novelty at the present moment, will soon become a mature technology, and also that it is an enabling technology to serve as a means to enhancing business performance through better analytics, it is necessary to have a philosophical discussion about the nature of big data, its promises, limitations, potential pitfalls, and some antidotes in case the society neglects such pitfalls. There will be two main contributions of this project. First, it will be a first comprehensive treatment of big data from a philosophical perspective. Second, given the methodological choice, it could produce a serious critical discourse about big data, delineating the hypes from the credible and persuasive rhetoric in the big data literature.

Coined by Tan et al. (2006), “duo-mining” recognizes the synergy produced by combining the traditional data mining techniques with the relatively new analytical methods called text mining, the discovery by computer of new, previously unknown information, by automatically extracting information from different written resources (Hearst, n.d.). While data mining proves to be effective when the data to be analyzed is structured, attention given to text mining lately is on the rise along with the staggering growth in volume of textual data found in the public domain such as tweets and various customer reviews. Making a case for duo-mining has been done through measuring the lift in predictive modeling. Data mining is known to produce a significant lift in comparison to the baseline predictive methods such as random walk. Use of text mining also shows to create a significant lift over the efficacy of baseline prediction. When the two methods are combined, the lift is even higher than eith...

Online retailer reputation has been suggested as an important source of price dispersion on the Internet. In this study, we empirically assess the relationship between retailer reputation and price dispersion using data collected from BizRate.com. 200 electronic products are included in the study. The results should help us better understand electronic markets.

From a firm’s point of view, regardless of the orientation of the firm and regardless of the business models it embraces, having a competent IT workforce is a critical success factor. Despite the claims prevalent in the IT literature that IT talents are a key factor in successful e-businesses, very little is known regarding what roles the IT workforce plays in the shaping of e-business strategies and how the HR strategies affect IT professionals in making career decisions in the midst of abundant career options available to them. While there is no formula that can help firms predict the career moves of IT professionals, or guide the IT workforce in their career moves, an in-depth study of the firm’s internal and external factors can provide a guiding principle in establishing IT labor policies to the majority of current bricks-and-mortar firms that may have to make the ‘forced move’ toward clicks-and-mortar businesses. The current research is intended to fulfill this.

extensible Markup Language (XML) has received much attention in the popular press lately as a new technology designed to facilitate information sharing among business entities. One of the biggest problems that companies are experiencing today with XML is that many executives do not understand what XML is and why it is important, nor do they understand what its potential impact on their information strategy might be. In this paper, we present an overview of XML and a framework for generating IS strategic alternatives, which was introduced in its original form in the 1980s. This framework is adapted to suit the properties of XML and its usage is illustrated with XML cases. Finally, considerations for developing XML applications that are identified by the framework are presented.

ABSTRACT This paper offers a conceptual framework for exploring the potential role of Expert Systems (ES) in supporting the strategic planning process in the operations management function of organisations. First, the strategic planning process will be considered in a general sense as well as in the operations management function around four specific operations functions, i.e., forecasting, capacity planning, logistics management, and facility location. Then, we provide a broad background of the ES technology with a general exploration followed by a pointed discussion on the potential uses in operations management as well as the limitations. Next, we propose the main thesis of this paper in the form of a conceptual model. Each of the components and the relationships among them will be discussed thoroughly. The paper provides theoretical and managerial ideas and insights in order to sustain the role of expert systems in supporting the strategic planning process in the operations management function, and finally we provide suggestions for further research.

This paper presents an extensive bibliography of the archival material on model management, and an analysis of that material. It argues that the three general approaches to model management can be observed, called here the data-model analogy, knowledge-based and model-representation approaches. For the period 1970 to 1989, 57 journals were exhaustively searched for articles dealing with model management; 152 articles were identified. An informal analysis shows that model creation and execution have been the major model management functions addressed by research, and that mathematical programming and simulation have been the dominant model areas. Applications have addressed the extremes of Operations Research models, namely policy and strategy at one extreme and operations at the other, with many applications in accounting and finance also prevalent. A formal analysis using factor analysis shows that research in model management has moved away from speculation and focus on certain limited aspects of the subject towards the practical implementation of model management systems. Further, a regression model shows that the model-representation approach has tended to yield implemented systems, whereas the data-model analogy approach has not. Directions for future research and development are suggested.
