SYMPOSIUM ”The image of Mecka” The pilgrimage, the topography and the iconography Monday 5th May, 2014 at the Uppsala University Library ”Carolina Rediviva”
Invitation Uppsala University Library, the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul and Forum for Turkic Studies at Uppsala University are inviting to an international symposium on the important Mecka painting from the early 18th century in the Uppsala University art collections. ”The image of Mecka” The pilgrimage, the topography and the iconography Monday 5th May, 2014 at the Uppsala University Library ”Carolina Rediviva” In 1713 the young theologian Michael Eneman returned to Uppsala from his expedition to the Orient, the second expedition initiated by King Karl XII. Eneman brought a large image of Mecka painted in oil on canvas. This painting is the earliest known image of Mecka with the intention of giving an exact knowledge of the holy haram area and the surrounding urban context. The inscriptions in Arabic and Ottoman Turkish explaining the important buildings have now been read for the first time since the painting came to Sweden and will be presented and discussed. Opening of the symposium: Chief Librarian, Professor Lars Burman, Uppsala University Library , Carolina Rediviva Professor Jan von Bonsdorff, Department of Art history, Uppsala University Professor Eva Csato Johanson, Forum for Turkic Studies, Uppsala University Presentations: Deniz Beyazit, Ph.D, Curator of Islamic Art, Metropolitan Museum, New York Mehmet Tütüncü, Chairman Research Centre for the Turkish and Arabic World in the Netherlands, Harlem Hans Nordesjö, Ph.Lic, former librarian Uppsala University Library Karin Ådahl, Ph.D, Assoc.
Withdrawn. PROCESS DEVELOPMENT OF SILICON-SILICON CARBIDE HYBRID MICRO-ENGINE STRUCTURES. Dongwon Choi, Robert J. Shinavski, S. Mark Spearing, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. A MEMS-based gas turbine engine is being developed for use as a button-sized portable power generator or micro-aircraft propulsion source. Power densitiesexpected for the micro-engine require high combustor exit temperatures (1300-1700 K) and very high rotor peripheral speeds (300-600 m/s). These harsh operating conditions induce high stress levels in the engine structure, and thus require quali ed refractory materials with high strength. Silicon carbide has been chosen as the most promising material for use in the near future due to its high strength and chemical inertness at elevated temperatures. However, techniques for microfabricating single-crystal silicon carbide to the level of high precision needed for the micro-engine are not currently available. To circumvent this limitation and...
This article is a contribution to the discussion on the utility of spatial models in the context of Small Area Estimation (SAE). The attention is on the Fay-Herriot model and its Mean Squared Error (MSE) when a common autocorrelation parameter among small ...
Elementary Linear Algebra, 11th Edition by Howard Anton and Chris Rorres provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of linear algebra. This edition is designed for undergraduate students and emphasizes clarity and pedagogy. The book covers essential topics such as systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. It includes numerous examples and exercises, some of which are tailored for students with a background in calculus, though calculus is not a prerequisite. The aim is to present the material in the clearest possible way to facilitate understanding and application.
In August 2023, the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) celebrated its 60th anniversary as the country’s premier higher education institution (HEI) on defense and security since 1963. The time-honored mission of NDCP is to provide quality education, training, and policy research for strategic leaders and decision-makers in national security administration. Its reason for existence is reinvigorated by a vision to become a world-class HEI in national and international security affairs by 2028. This behooves NDCP to be a more active agent of how comprehensive security can be pursued, not just for the Philippines’ national interest, but also for the common good of the region and the international community in this century. This advocacy for NDCP calls for a critical rethinking of security that is about peace, prosperity, and people’s safety in a world characterized not by hegemony—but by parity, mutual respect, and multi-polarity.
This paper is an in-depth comparative study, highlighting the disparities in research capabilities between developing nations and a comparative developed nation, Australia, post decolonisation and independence as they relate to the fields of computer, science, mathematics, and physics. It explores the historical and ongoing impacts of the effects of globalisation characteristics and challenges such as political instability, corruption, inequality, skilled migration, and inadequate educational reforms all contributing to a weakened educational system. Using a mixed method approach, this report investigates how these factors culminated in a cascading series of events, which ultimately resulted in a fractured education environment, not conducive to develop and grow domestic research capabilities. This initial research highlights a significant and systemic shortage of skilled researchers, specifically within the field necessary to enable a country to participate and flourish within the fourth industrial revolution, which is focused on the development and widespread implementation of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and neurotechnology. Furthermore, it highlights an urgent need to develop strategies to ensure the closure of this capability gap as well as ensuring global competitiveness in this arena.
