Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is still a very common cause of morbidity and mortality around the globe and the disorder of calcium and inorganic phosphate metabolism has been poorly associated with the infection. This study was aimed at assessing the total serum calcium and inorganic phosphate levels in PTB patients
Tuberculosis (TB), which is one of the oldest diseases known to affect humans and is likely to have existed in prehominids, is a major cause of death worldwide. This disease is caused by bacteria of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and usually affects the lungs, although other organs are involved in up to one third of cases. If properly treated, TB caused by drug susceptible strains is curable in virtually all cases. If untreated, the disease may be fatal within 5 years in 50-65% of cases. Transmission usually takes place through the airborne spread of droplet nuclei produced by patients with infectious pulmonary TB. With a population of about 1252 million, India is the largest country in the Region. It is ranked first among the high burden countries and contributed 24% of the estimated global incident TB cases and about 20% of global TB related deaths in 2013 (1). Since its inception in 1997, the RNTCP has initiated almost 20 million patients on treatment. Since 2005, the programme has consistently achieved and exceeded the global target of 85% treatment success rate among new smear positive cases, as well as among all new and relapse TB cases, with 88% for the cohort of patients registered in 2012, slightly below the newly set target of 90% success rate. In the 2012 cohort, the treatment success rate for retreatment cases (excluding relapse) and HIV positive TB cases (all forms) was 74% and 77% respectively; among retreatment cases the higher proportion of unsuccessful treatment was related to ―lost to follow-up‖ (13%), and among HIV positive cases to deaths (13%) (2,3) .

Effect of Vitamin D3 on Phagocytic Potential of Macrophages with Live Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Lymphoproliferative Response in Pulmonary Tuberculosis2004 •
Immune responses are elicited through antigen presentation and recognition by macrophages and T-lymphocytes, respectively. The immunomodulatory effect of vitamin D3 on macrophage phagocytic potential with live Mycobacterium tuberculosis, spontaneous and M. tuberculosis culture filtrate antigen induced lymphocyte responses were studied in pulmonary tuberculosis patients (PTBPs) (n = 31) and normal healthy subjects (NHSs) (n = 43). Vitamin D3 at a concentration of 10−7 M significantly enhanced the macrophage phagocytosis of live M. tuberculosis in normal subjects with low phagocytic potential (less than 10%) (p = 0.015). No such increase was observed in PTBPs. Vitamin D3 significantly decreased the spontaneous lymphoproliferative response (p = 0.022) and increased the apoptosis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in PTBPs (p = 0.024). In normals, vitamin D3 increased the spontaneous lymphoproliferative response. An inverse correlation between macrophage phagocytosis and spontaneous response was observed in NHSs, whereas a direct correlation was seen between vitamin D3-treated cells in normal subjects under in vitro condition. Vitamin D3 decreased the M. tuberculosis culture filtrate antigen induced lymphocyte response significantly in normal subjects (p = 0.0003), while it had no influence on the lymphocyte response in PTBPs. The present study suggests that exposure to vitamin D3 increases the phagocytic potential and spontaneous lymphoproliferative response but brings down the antigen-induced response in normals. In tuberculosis, addition of vitamin D3 has no significant effect on antigen-induced lymphoproliferative response. This may be due to the unresponsive nature of the cells to the action of vitamin D3 by virtue of the disease, which renders them inactive.

Biochemical profiling of tuberculosis patients co-infected with hepatitis C virus2017 •
The present research work was planned to investigate the biochemical parameters in tuberculosis (TB) patients in comparison with healthy individual and TB patients co-infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). For the study, we determined liver enzymes, serum proteins, hemoglobin photometrically, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) by the Westergren method. The results showed a significant ( P <0.05) increase in the level of alanine aminotransferase in the Test group (TB + HCV patients) and the TB control group when compared with the healthy control group. A non-significant ( P >0.05) increase in the level of aspartate aminotransferase was observed in the Test group while a non-significantly ( P >0.05) reduced level was observed in the TB control group when compared with healthy controls. Background—Vitamin D was used to treat tuberculosis in the pre-antibiotic era, and its metabolites induce antimycobacterial immunity in vitro. Clinical trials investigating the effect of adjunctive vitamin D on sputum culture conversion are lacking. Methods—We conducted a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of adjunctive vitamin D in adults with sputum smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis in London, UK. 146 participants were allocated to receive 2.5 mg vitamin D3 or placebo at baseline and at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after starting standard tuberculosis treatment. The primary endpoint of the trial was time from initiation of antimicrobial therapy to sputum culture conversion. Introduction tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health issue with high morbidity and mortality rates especially in the developing countries. It is a multi-organ disease and can influence biochemical changes. This study sought to determine the influence of tuberculosis and its drug treatment on serum biochemical parameters in patients in Nigeria. Methods it was a descriptive observational cohort study on 150 subjects whose blood samples were analyzed for serum albumin, serum sodium, and serum potassium. The subjects were grouped into 3: TB group= 50 new TB subjects not on treatment, F group= 50 TB subjects on treatment for 2/12 or more and C group= 50 non-TB control subjects.
