Acetylsalicylic Acid

Abstract: The extensive demand for cleaner environment is forcing chemical industry to use less hazardous materials. In this regard, heteropolyacids attracted considerable amount of interest due to the less toxic behavior in addition of possessing higher acidity. Heteropoly acids have been used as catalysts for the reaction of salicylic acid with acetic anhydride. The performance of different forms of heteropoly acids in the presence of acetic anhydride as acetylating agent for acetylation of salicylic acid was compared. The best conditions were observed using Preyssler and Silica-supported Preyssler Nanoparticles as catalysts. The catalyst is recyclable and reusable.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives for anti-inflammatory, analgesic and ulcerogenic activity 5-Methyl-6-phenyl-2-thioxothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidone derivative (2) reacted with hydrazonoyl chloride derivatives to afford triazolothienopyrimidones 4a-f. Also, acetone-1-(2-amino-5-isopropyl-thiophene-3-carbonitrile) (3) reacted with functional and bifunctional groups to yield the corresponding compounds 5-11. The new products showed anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and ulcerogenic activities comparable to that of indomethacin and acetylsalicylic acid, respectively.

Pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins are plant proteins that are induced in response to pathogen attack. PR proteins are grouped into independent families based on their sequences and properties. The PR-4 family comprises class I and class II chitinases. We have isolated a full-length cDNA encoding a chitinase from maize which shares a high degree of nucleotide and amino acid sequence homology with the class II chitinases of the PR-4 family of PR proteins. Our results indicate that fungal infection, and treatment either with fungal elicitors or with moniliformin, a mycotoxin produced by the fungus Fusarium moniliforme, increase the level of ZmPR4 mRNA. In situ mRNA hybridization analysis in sections obtained from fungus-infected germinating embryos revealed that ZmPR4 mRNA accumulation occurs in those cell types that first establish contact with the pathogen. ZmPR4 mRNA accumulation is also stimulated by treatment with silver nitrate whereas the application of the hormones gibberellic acid or acetylsalicylic acid has no effect. Wounding, or treatment with abscisic acid or methyl jasmonate, results in accumulation of ZmPR4 mRNA in maize leaves. Furthermore, the ZmPR4 protein was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and used to obtain polyclonal antibodies that specifically recognized ZmPR4 in protein extracts from fungus-infected embryos. Accumulation of ZmPR4 mRNA in fungus-infected maize tissues was accompanied by a significant accumulation of the corresponding protein. The possible implications of these findings as part of the general defence response of maize plants against pathogens are discussed.

En este trabajo la autora, que comienza aportando numerosas referencias nuevas sobre El Saucedo desde el siglo XVI, hace una propuesta metodológica: aunque había ya bastante bibliografía española sobre termalismo antiguo y lugares sagrados asociados con ellos, casi nunca se había tratado de definir cuál era exactamente el “paisaje del teónimo”, y descubrir a través de ello qué se curaba en estos lugares; para ello se precisa una mayor interdisciplinariedad.

Frente a la interpretación tradicional (y aún en vigor) de los excavadores de este yacimiento como una ‘villa’ privada reconvertida en el siglo VI en basílica cristiana (pero con una extraña diosa pagana bajo su “altar mayor”), la autora propone aquí que ya de antiguo el edificio, erigido en un ‘salicetum’ (saucedo), era un ‘locus sacer', un 'delubrum' o santuario pagano con zona termal, que fue cristianizado luego como ‘delubrum’ con baptisterio a los pies, seguramente por la importancia e influjo que ya tenía.

La diosa ‘Iscallis’ (antes entendida como un hombre, o bien como la diosa propia de la británica Exeter), que deja rastros en la toponimia regional (Escalona, Illescas), sería una divinidad local, y trasunto de Proserpina. Un nuevo análisis de su precioso mosaico permite reconocer mejor, además de las cinco cráteras ya conocidas, una serpiente con cornucopia y un creciente lunar invertido (como muchos de bronce aparecidos en la zona, romanos y posteriores). Dos mosaicos en sendos absidiolos enfrente de ella, con delfines y granadas, insisten de nuevo en su carácter sanador y en que se trata de la diosa del inframundo (cuyo culto pervive en las “Mundas” talaveranas), y algunos hallazgos previos, como las asas de tres sítulas de bronce, un elemento más propio del ámbito religioso. Igualmente apoya el carácter sacro y sanador la existencia de dos fuentes inmediatas con un epígrafe “A las Ninfas”, que antes de 1999 no había sido asociada al yacimiento por los excavadores.

Finalmente la autora sugiere que el carácter curativo vendría precisamente de los sauces del lugar, que aportan el componente primario del hoy popular ácido acetilsalicílico (aspirina). Las epidemias de fiebres que se dieron en la zona de Talavera del siglo XIX probarían este problema sanitario, y su uso en ellas.

Análisis polínicos hechos y publicados diez años después (en 2009) vendrían a comprobar el “paisaje del teónimo” previamente imaginado. Esto, junto con buenas fotos en color del mosaico, se encuentra en la Addenda (1-8) que ahora se ha añadido al final del estudio.

Rapid loss of seed viability of Carica papaya L. (papaya) and its high commercial price impairs the availability of high quality seed to growers. Certified papaya seed cv. Maradol was utilized to define practical methodologies to restore the seed germination performance. Seed was submitted to: 1) hydropriming: 4 d of hydropriming rose seed germination up to 84%, 250% more than the untreated seeds; however, the seedlings generated from untreated seeds accumulated more biomass than the other treatments; 2) chemopriming: seeds treated 4 d in a 10 − −− −−5 M calcium chloride solution germinated 262% more than did the untreated seeds and in addition, the seedlings generated from treated seeds accumulated more biomass than the control seedlings. When seeds were treated either in the 10 − − − − −4 M salicylic acid or in Agromil S® solution high germination was accomplished 81 and 73% higher than the untreated seed respectively. All treated seeds germinated faster than the untreated ones.

The paper aims to mediate thin film chromatography analysis by means of drugs commonly found in households (analgesic-antipyretics) to secondary school and grammar students, or to college students. For this purpose, laboratory tasks have been designed to cover all levels of the Bloom pyramid so that the educational potential is as high as possible. This is closely related to the topic of drug expiration and treatment. Pupils and students should take on both the competences of knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

The present paper is an update to and extension of the previous systematic review on the primary care management of patients with uninvestigated dyspepsia (UD). The original publication of the clinical management tool focused on the initial four- to eight-week assessment of UD. This update is based on new data from systematic reviews and clinical trials relevant to UD. There is now direct clinical evidence supporting a test-and-treat approach in patients with nondominant heartburn dyspepsia symptoms, and head-to-head comparisons show that use of a proton pump inhibitor is superior to the use of H2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) in the initial treatment of Helicobacter pylori-negative dyspepsia patients. Cisapride is no longer available as a treatment option and evidence for other prokinetic agents is lacking. Currently, acne in adolescents and adults is caused by an infection in follicles caused by hormonal changes, stress, water pollution, air, and earth; the last one comes into contact with the skin through the hands of patients. This project presents the incorporation of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to the hydroxyethylcellulose/polyacrylamide gel (HEC/PAAm) in the synthesis of gel or by its swelling. The results show us that the incorporation of ASA is possible by both methods; first, the incorporation by synthesis of degradation of the gel is more visible. The infrared spectroscopic analysis shows the functional groups of gel and ASA, 2921 and 2863 cm−1, whose assignments correspond to CH3 and CH2 groups, which are part of both the polymer and the ASA molecule, which confirms the interaction between the two groups. A potentiometric flow injection (FI) system was developed for the acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) determination in drugs, without previous treatment. The tubular potentiometric electrode for salicylate (SA) was based on tricaprylyl-trimethyl-ammonium-salicylate (aliquat-salicylate) as the ion-exchanger, supported on poly(ethylene-co-vinyl-acetate) (EVA) matrix and applied directly onto a conducting support. The standards and samples were freshly prepared in ethanol solution (0.10 mol l(-1) Tris-SO(4) buffer, pH 8.0, containing 0.25 mol l(-1) Na(2)SO(4) and 8.0% v/v ethanol) to facilitate the dissolution of ASA and were injected directly into the system. The SA formed due to the on-line alkaline hydrolysis of alcoholic ASA solution, with 0.50 mol l(-1) NaOH (coil, 50 cm length), was monitored by the tubular electrode after neutralization with 0.25 mol l(-1) H(2)SO(4). A solution of 0.10 mol l(-1) Tris-SO(4) buffer (pH 8.0), containing 0.25 mol l(-1) Na(2)SO(4) was employed as carrier. In optimized conditions (flow rate of 2.1 ml min(-1) and volume of injection of 150 mul), the tubular electrode showed a linear response to ASA in the concentration range between 4.0x10(-3) and 4.0x10(-2) mol l(-1). A conversion factor of ASA to SA of 85% occurs in these conditions with an increase of about 130% in the signal to the system with on-line hydrolysis (three-channel) in comparison to the system without (one-channel). The response time of the electrode was about 5 s with an analytical frequency of 28 samples per h and a relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) of 2.1% for 30 successive injections. Determinations of ASA in tablet samples by the proposed method exhibited relative differences of 1.0-3.5%, compared to the official method of the British Pharmacopoeia. Despite significant advances in the management of coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction (MI) is still associated with a mortality rate of 45%. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) has been the oral antiplatelet drug of choice until recently. Thienopyridines such as clopidogrel have been shown to provide significant benefits in the management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), either as an alternative to or in combination with ASA therapy. The purpose of this article was to review the available scientific literature evaluating the use of clopidogrel in the management of ACS. Relevant published data were identified through searches of the English-language literature indexed on MEDLINE and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts through April 2003. Search terms included thienopyridines, platelet aggregation inhibitors, clopidogrel, ticlopidine, acute coronary syndrome, myocardial infarction, and percutaneous coronary intervention. Pertinent conference abstracts were also included. The results of 3 large clinical trials-Clopidogrel in Unstable Angina to Prevent Recurrent Events (CURE), Effect of Pretreatment with Clopidogrel and Aspirin Followed by Long-Term Therapy in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI-CURE), and Clopidogrel for the Reduction of Events During Observation (CREDO)-support prolonged use of clopidogrel (up to 12 months) in combination with ASA in patients with non-ST-segment elevation MI and patients undergoing a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A significant increase in bleeding events was observed in the group that received clopidogrel plus ASA compared with ASA alone in the CURE (major bleeding, P = 0.001; minor bleeding, P < 0.001) and PCI-CURE (minor bleeding, P = 0.03) trials. Use of the combination of clopidogrel and ASA with other antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant agents has not been studied extensively. Use of the combination of clopidogrel and ASA for up to 9 months is recommended for the medical management of non-ST-segment elevation MI and after a PCI. The increased risk of bleeding must be taken into account, and use of this combination with other agents that affect bleeding risk should be considered carefully.
