Afro-German Studies

In dem Artikel wird aufgezeigt, wie sich Kernideen des Afropolitanismus in afrodeutscher Gegenwartslyrik wiederfinden. Die lyrischen Texte "Dein Land" von Philipp Khabo Koepsell, "travelling" von Olumide Popoola und "heimatlos [versuch 984]" von Chantal-Fleur Sandjon werden dadurch in den internationalen Afropolitanismus Diskurs mit eingebracht, zum anderen wird jedoch auch die Germanistik ‚internationalisiert‘. Der Afropolitanismus wird dabei für eine innovative Analyse der literarischen Texte genutzt, die sowohl Teil Deutschlands als auch der afrikanischen Diaspora und der Welt sind. Marginalisierte literarische Texte rücken somit in den Mittelpunkt des Artikels und zeigen, dass die afrodeutsche Gegenwartslyrik einen vielfältigen und gesellschaftsrelevanten Forschungsbereich darstellt, der dazu beiträgt, die germanistischen Literaturwissenschaften um bisher wenig sichtbare Stimmen, Perspektiven und Geschichten zu erweitern.

In this article I explore the influence of Afrofuturism on Olivia Wenzel's play Mais in Deutschland und anderen Galaxien. The play focuses on the black German protagonist Noah by showing scenes from his life, ranging from his childhood in East Germany to his problems as an adult. In a post-modernist style, the play does not follow one narrative thread and there is no authoritative perspective. Most importantly, Wenzel's inclusion of fantastical characters, space travel, and a non-linear narrative adds an element of Afrofuturism to the text. In a self-referential move, one of the play's narrative threads is a comic book story that Noah writes about himself and his mother called Mais in Deutschland und anderen Galaxien, and this is where the fantastical characters and space travel emerge. At the conclusion of both the comic and the play, Noah's fictional self sprouts wings and flies into space, escaping the stifling structures that determined his life and his relationships on earth. I argue that these Afrofuturist elements allow Wenzel to challenge the notion of a homogeneous black German subject, by positing the possibility of multiple galaxies and diverse ways for Noah to experience his self that do not necessarily coalesce to form a unified subject.

In diesem Artikel wird die Rolle des Afrofuturismus in dem Theaterstück Mais in Deutschland und anderen Galaxien von Olivia Wenzel untersucht. Das Theaterstück fokussiert auf den afrodeutschen Protagonisten Noah, indem es verschiedene Szenen aus seinem Leben zeigt, von seiner Kindheit in der DDR bis zu seinen Problemen als Erwachsener. Im postmodernen Stil hat das Stück keine einsträngige oder einheitliche Handlung und es gibt keine verlässliche auktoriale Perspektive. Am wichtigsten ist, dass Wenzels Stück phantastische Figuren, die Raumfahrt, und eine nicht-lineare Erzählung umfasst, Strategien, die dem Stück ein afrofuturistisches Element verleihen. Ein Handlungsstrang entfaltet sich als ein Comicbuch, das Noahüber sich selbst und seine Mutter schreibt, welches Mais in Deutschland und anderen Galaxien heißt. Am Schluss des Comicbuches, der auch der Schluss des Stückes ist, wachsen dem fiktionalen Noah Flügel und er fliegt auf ins All. Auf diese Weise entkommt er den erdrückenden Strukturen, die sein Leben und seine Beziehungen auf der Erde bisher bestimmt haben. Ich argumentiere, dass diese afrofuturistischen Elemente es Wenzel erlauben, die Idee eines homogenen afrodeutschen Subjekts in Frage zu stellen, indem sie die Möglichkeit vielfacher Galaxien schafft. Wichtig ist auch, dass Noah auf vielfache Art und Weise sein Selbst erfährt, was zu keinem einheitlichen Subjektbegriff führen kann.

Dies ist der erste Versuch, das Leben des aus der Karibik stammenden Offiziers William Nicolas Reed zu rekonstruieren, der 1848 der einzige schwarze Offizier einer deutschen Armee war. Reed war eine historisch bemerkenswerte Persönlichkeit, die zwischen Identitäten und Staaten wechselte, dabei in den großen revolutionären Fragen jener Zeit eine interessante Rolle spielte und dennoch fast völlig von der Geschichtsschreibung übersehen wurde. Dies ist auch ein Artikel über das Erstaunen und damit über die Kontraste zwischen Erwartung und Tatsächlichem: Ein Afroamerikaner in einer deutschen Armee im 19. Jahrhundert? Und dann auch noch ein Offizier? Ein Afrodeutscher in den Revolutionsumtrieben von 1848? Warum wussten wir davon bisher nichts? Besonders aussagekräftig ist ein im Detail dokumentierter Konflikt mit zahlreichen Originalzitaten, in der er als ehemaliger Universitätsstudent eine von der stretenden Gruppe anerkannte Achtungsstellung einnimmt. Sein Leben bietet Anlass zu weiterem Erstaunen, die uns die historischen Widersprüche der Zeit besonders deutlich machen: Er kämpft gegen die dänische Kolonialmacht, Seite an Seite ausgerechnet jener, deren Vorväter eben dieselbe Kolonialmacht mitsamt ihrer Sklaverei groß gemacht hatten. Also: ein Nachkomme afrikanischer Pflanzer-Sklaven unangefochten in den höheren Rängen der Gesellschaft! Sein Lebenslauf zeigt: Er war sich seiner Identität höchst bewusst und wusste seine Chancen maximal zu nutzen. Seine frühe deutsche Karriere als junger Offizier ermöglichte es ihm später, in den USA in höhere Offiziersränge aufzusteigen und frühere afrikanische Sklaven in den Krieg gegen die Sklavenhalter zu führen. Damit steht Reed, auch ohne dass wir Schriften von ihm kennen, für bedeutende Entwicklungen der Moderne: Er entwickelte sich konsistent vom Rebellen gegen eine europäische Kolonialmacht zum amerikanischen Anführer freigelassener Sklaven und Kämpfer gegen die Sklavenhalter.

In 1877, the African American musical ensemble known as the Fisk Jubilee Singers traveled to Germany to raise money for their university.  The choir’s ten-month tour provided German listeners with one of their first significant and sustained encounters with African Americans and African American culture in the nineteenth century. As listeners throughout Germany heard the ensemble perform, they began to debate the Fisk Jubilee Singers’ musical, cultural, and ethnic origins. At the heart of their growing ethnomusicological and anthropological interest in the Jubilee Singers’ music lied the question of whether or not African Americans were fulfilling the powerful promise of the civilizing mission: were they proof that people of the black diaspora were capable of accepting “Western” art music and cultural values? This article illustrates how African American music contributed to global conversations on the civilizing mission in the nineteenth century.

African American soprano Grace Bumbry sparked a controversy in West Germany when she became the first black musician to sing at the Bayreuth Festival Opera House in July 1961. This article demonstrates how race served two separate functions for the Bayreuth Opera Festival and its postwar audience. For opera director Wieland Wagner, hiring a black singer was part of a larger agenda to sever Bayreuth’s ties from its most recent and turbulent past. German audiences discussing this historical moment, however, expressed concern that protestors of this performance were preventing Germans from moving forward into a new, democratic, and racially accepting Germany.

This chapter examines how white Germans and Austrians defined the relationship between art music and black musicianship in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It argues that listeners came to believe that African American spirituals – more than any other form of ‘black music’ or ‘Negro music’ – were capable of entering the realm of high art music. Audiences worked out fluid, contradictory and fragile constructs of blackness and culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as they struggled to locate spirituals within the world of ‘black music.’ What if, Germans wondered, African American spirituals were proof that blacks were capable of civilization? What if these spirituals belonged in the opera house more than in an ethnological exhibit? Debates about African American spirituals and ‘Negro music’ in cities such as Berlin and Vienna illustrate how Austro-German musical culture accepted or denied black people’s ability to create high art.

When African American concert singers began to perform German lieder in central Europe in the 1920s, white German and Austrian listeners were astounded by the veracity and conviction of their performances. How had they managed to sing like Germans? This article argues that black performances of German music challenged audiences' definitions of blackness, whiteness, and German music during the transatlantic Jazz Age in interwar central Europe. Upon hearing black performers masterfully sing lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and others, audiences were compelled to consider whether German national identity was contingent upon whiteness. Some listeners chose to call black concert singers “Negroes with white souls,” associating German music with whiteness by extension. Others insisted that the singer had sounded black and therefore un-German. Race was ultimately the filter through which people interpreted these performances of the Austro-German musical canon. This article contributes to a growing body of scholarship that investigates how and when audiences began to associate classical music with whiteness. Simultaneously, it offers a musicological intervention in contemporary discourses that still operate under the assumption that it is impossible to be both black and German.

May Ayim is one of the best-known representatives of both the Black German movement and Black German literature. Her individual and collaborative works helped to shape collective modes of Black German identity, making visible and affirming ties to the Black diaspora. This paper examines the intersections of music—specifically, the blues—and literature in Ayim’s poetry, focusing in particular on blues in schwarz weiss (1995). Here Ayim references the African oral tradition not only through her inclusion of Adinkra symbols, but also through a blues aesthetic that manifests itself in scat-like interjections, rhythmic breaks and patterns, and repetitions. In addition to these formal aspects, her blues aesthetic also relies on the West African tradition of “Nommo”—the naming process. Ayim’s poetry follows this tradition by incorporating her personal experiences, addressing pressing socio-political issues, and by constructing and presenting a self-determined Black German subject as member of a larger community, within and beyond Germany. Her essayistic and poetic works stand in dialogical relationship with each other, and serve as a forum to publicly discuss discrimination and marginalization as universal problems. As with the Blues, this essay argues, Ayim’s poetry presents socio-political problems as resolvable by formulating a “we” capable of action.

Der zweisprachige Sammelband "The Black Diaspora and Germany / Deutschland und die Schwarze Diaspora" gibt Einblicke in die Erfahrungen der Schwarzen Diaspora in Deutschland. Es werden zudem internationale Verbindungen zur Schwarzen Diaspora nachgezeichnet. Die Beiträge in Form von Aufsätzen und Interviews stammen von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern, Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten, Kulturschaffenden sowie Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen. Historische Perspektiven und Erfahrungen der Schwarzen Diaspora werden durch gegenwärtige ergänzt. Themen des Sammelbandes umfassen unter anderem historische Überblicke sowie Berichte individueller Erfahrungen, Formen des Schwarzen Aktivismus in Deutschland, den Zusammenhang von Rassismus und Nation, die Position von Schwarzen Kulturschaffenden sowie die Notwendigkeit, die Schwarze Diaspora zu gendern.

The bilingual anthology "The Black Diaspora and Germany / Deutschland und die Schwarze Diaspora" provides insights into the experiences of the Black Diaspora in Germany as well as links to the international Black Diaspora. Contributions in the form of essays and interviews come from scientists, activists, and cultural professionals as well as contemporary witnesses. Historical perspectives and experiences of the Black Diaspora are complemented by contemporary ones. Topics of the anthology include historical overviews as well as reports of individual experiences, forms of Black activism in Germany, the connection between racism and nation, the position of Black people in cultural production, and the need for gendering the Black Diaspora.

Unter Einbeziehung zahlreicher unterschiedlicher und teils unveröffentlichter Quellen aus Privatarchiven rekonstruiert Tiffany N. Florvil die Geschichte der modernen Schwarzen deutschen Bewegung. In sechs ansatzweise chronologisch aufgebauten Kapiteln arbeitet Florvil sich von den 1980er Jahren bis in die Gegenwart vor bzw. von Audre Lordes Berliner Jahren und May Ayims literarischem Aktivismus über die Entstehung zentraler Schwarzer deutscher Organisationen wie der Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD) und Afrodeutsche Frauen/Schwarze Frauen in Deutschland e.V. (ADEFRA) bis hin zu Black Lives Matter. Besonders viel Raum wird Schwarzen deutschen "Aktivistinnen-Intellektuellen" (activist-intellectuals) bzw. "Alltagsintellektuellen" (quotidian intellectuals) und ihrem intersektionalen wie transnationalen Feminismus eingeräumt.

Resumo: O presente artigo apresenta ao público brasileiro a poeta afro-alemã May Ayim (1960-1996) e traça bases teóricas de minha pesquisa de mestrado em andamento na PGET-UFSC, que se propõe a traduzir parte de sua obra poética, além de debruçar-se sobre os porquês de uma tradução ética político-criativa no " Atlântico Negro " (GILROY, 2001); (CARRASCOSA, 2016). Ademais, compartilho reflexões sobre percalços que tradutoras/es negras/os podem encontrar em ambientes dominados pelo eurocentrismo, bem como estratégias tradutórias antirracistas que visam à utilização da tradução como ferramenta de subversão (RAJAGOPALAN, 1998) de tal ordem colonial. Abstract: This paper presents the Afro-German poet May Ayim (1960-1996) to the Brazilian public and drafts the theoretical basis of an underway master's research at the Department of Translation Studies of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. This project aims to translate part of Ayim's lyrical work into Brazilian Portuguese not without leaning over the motives of an ethical political and creative translation praxis in the " Black Atlantic " (GILROY, 2001); (CARRASCOSA, 2016). Furthermore, it shares reflections on entanglements that Black translators might have to face in environments dominated by eurocentrism, as well as anti-racist translation strategies that take translation as a subversive tool (RAJAGOPALAN, 1998) against colonial orders.

The popular perception of the First World War has remained an inherently white mythic space in which white men fight against other white men and where minorities, when and if they are featured, are given an anonymous secondary role and are subject to the will and motivation of their white heroic leaders. This article will be considering the white mythic space of the First World War by focusing on the video game Battlefield 1 (2016) and investigating the backlash by players on online message boards against the inclusion of soldiers of color in the game’s multiplayer features. In the online discourse, these players diminish the role that minorities played in the First World War and although the presence of minorities in the historical First World War is to a minor extent acknowledged, their space in the video game is nonetheless denied. I argue that this backlash is based on a rejection of the inclusive collective memory as portrayed in Battlefield 1, supported by racist arguments against the backdrop of the white mythic space of the First World War and that their rejection of the presence of minorities in Battlefield 1 can be constructed as a continuation of the denial of agency for soldiers of color by white individuals that took place during the First World War and the postwar period.

1992 brachte die Gruppe "Advanced Chemistry" in Eigenregie den Song "Fremd im eigenen Land" heraus. Die Single markierte den Wendepunkt in der Entwicklung von deutschsprachigem Rap und war in zweierlei Hinsicht ein besonderes Ereignis. Zum ersten Mal kam eine deutschsprachige Hip-Hop-Scheibe auf den Markt, die radikal dem Ulk des "Deutschrap" à la "Die Fantastischen Vier" den Rücken kehrte und durch Fluss und lyrische Dichte mit internationalen Produktionen Schritt halten konnte. Außerdem war der Song so etwas wie ein fünfminütiger Gewaltmarsch, der das Gesicht des Rassismus in Deutschland von allen Seiten beleuchtete. Mit seiner Mischung aus politischer Stellungnahme mit unmittelbarem Bezug auf den rassistischen Terror der Zeit und offensiver, wütender persönlicher Erzählung bekam "Fremd im eigenen Land" eine Anziehungskraft auf junge Leute – Migranten und Eingeborene gleichermaßen – wie wir es selbst nicht erwartet hatten.

Growing numbers of Black men and women spent time in Germany in the period immediately prior to the outbreak of World War One. This was foremost a consequence of the establishment of a German colonial empire in Africa in 1884 and the emergence of Germany as a maritime power. In particular, new migration pathways brought an almost continuous movement of young men from Germany's African colonies, primarily, but not exclusively from Cameroon and Togo. They formed part of a diverse Black presence which was largely transient in nature with most Black men and women staying in Germany only as visitors, eventually returning to their countries of origin. Nonetheless, by 1914 others were remaining on a longer term basis either out of choice or necessity and a small, but visible and increasingly interconnected population of Black residents was emerging. As will be shown the potential for growth of this Black population was greatly curtailed by the war and Germany's loss of its colonies under the Versailles Settlement. Focusing on the lives of Africans from the German colonies and their German-born children, this chapter takes a chronological look at the development of a Black community in Germany from the 1880s up to 1945. It begins by outlining the migration pathways that brought African colonial subjects to Germany pre-1914, before examining the difficulties they faced in setting down roots in interwar Germany; difficulties that were exacerbated by their increasingly unclear citizenship status. The chapter also considers the formal and informal social and political networks they and others of African heritage created at a national and transnational level during the Weimar years. The final section outlines the increasing assault on Black lives and Germany's Black community from the National Socialists.

Studies of transnational Afro-German heritage have overlooked the possibility that an Afro-German from the post-WWII period has been raised in the U.S. with a German birth mother. This chapter explores the critical contexts of transnational Afroeuropean and Afro-German identity and then relies on autoethnographic methodology to explore a German/Afro-German family's legacy from Europe to the U.S. and, culturally speaking, beyond these identities.
