When analyzing hunter-gatherers economy, it seems obvious that we can’t deny the importance of plants as a source of food and raw materials. However, the recovery and analysis of botanical remains from the archaeological record needs a special effort that is not very often made. The result is a picture in which these resources are under evaluated. The Selknam sites of Ewan I and Ewan II were excavated from a holistic approach that took into account all the remains at the same level, including the archaeobotanical ones. We recovered and studied charcoal, seeds and fruits that were analyzed afterwards. The preliminary results of this study are presented in this paper.

RESUMEN: Este artículo presenta un panorama de investigaciones arqueológicas sobre sitios de naufragios históricos en Argentina en base a una selección de siete casos de estudio. Las embarcaciones consideradas son de distinto tipo y se asocian a contextos cronológicos y culturales diversos. La distribución geográfica de los sitios abarca desde el río de la Plata en la ciudad de Buenos Aires hasta el extremo austral de Tierra del Fuego. Se sintetizan los objetivos, la metodología y los resultados obtenidos en cada uno de los casos destacando el aporte de la disciplina al conocimiento del pasado marítimo en el sur del continente americano.// ABSTRACT: The work presents an overview of archaeological investigations on shipwreck sites in Argentina based on a selection of seven case studies. The vessels considered are of different types and are associated to various chronological and cultural contexts. The geographical distribution of the sites ranges from the La Plata river in Buenos Aires city to the southernmost tip of Tierra del Fuego. The goals, methodology and results obtained in each of the cases are summarized, highlighting the contribution of the discipline to the knowledge of the maritime past in the south of the American continent.

Entre fines del siglo XIX y principio del siglo XX se instalaron en Tierra del Fuego las misiones salesianas de San Rafael en isla Dawson (1889-1903) y de La Candelaria en Río Grande (1893-1903). Ambas tuvieron como fin evangelizar a los grupos kawésqar, yaganes y selk´nam, habitantes milenarios del extremo sur chileno y argentino. El artículo presenta un análisis visual de fotografías que evidencian aspectos materiales de la vida de mujeres y hombres indígenas en las misiones. El valor de estas imágenes reside en que es uno de los pocos registros de los grupos culturales en este contexto. Esta investigación aporta información material sobre el impacto civilizatorio resultante de la evangelización y colonización de los pueblos del fin del mundo

El capítulo trata acerca de los restos de naufragios localizados durante las prospecciones costeras efectuadas en el marco del Programa Arqueologico Costa Atlántica Fueguina (Direccion Provincial de Patrimonio y Museos, Tierra del Fuego), llevado a cabo entre los años 2010 y 2014. Se analizan en distinto grado de profundidad los materiales hallados y se postula una metodología de trabajo aplicable al relevamiento de restos de naufragios dispersos a lo largo de grandes extensiones costeras.

RESUMEN Las costas de Península Mitre, en el extremo oriental de la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, albergan gran cantidad de apostaderos de pinnípedos que fueron objeto de la explotación intensiva por parte de loberos europeos, estadounidenses y criollos desde el siglo XVIII. En la década de 1940 en bahía Thetis funcionó una factoría dedicada a la obtención de cueros y aceite de estos animales, de la cual aún se conservan restos de algunas de sus instalaciones y grandes acumulaciones de huesos de los animales faenados. En este artículo se ofrecen datos históricos sobre la explotación de pinnípedos en la región de Península Mitre y las modalidades de obtención y aprovechamiento a escala industrial de estas presas realizadas en la factoría de bahía Thetis. Asimismo, se presentan los análisis zooarqueológicos y tafonómicos de camadas de huesos (bonebeds) de pinnípedos emplazadas en un sector de esta bahía. Los resultados presentados nos permiten profundizar en algunas propuestas previas en las cuales se sostiene que estas camadas de huesos son producto de una acumulación secundaria, generada por la acción de las mareas, de restos descartados por la faena de animales en la factoría de lobos marinos que funcionó en esta bahía. En este trabajo nos proponemos evaluar comparativamente los registros fotográficos y arqueológicos de los Yámana/Yagán en los espacios misionales y no-misionales (domésticos y ceremoniales) durante el período que permanecieron abiertas las misiones anglicanas en territorio yagán, Tierra del Fuego (1869-1916). Para ello, analizamos la cultura material registrada en: a) 23 fotografías de Yámana/Yagán en los espacios misionales anglicanos, b) 179 fotografías de Yámana/Yagán en espacios domésticos y ceremoniales, c) 1 sitio arqueológico misional (la Misión Anglicana de Ushuaia o Tushkapalan) y d) 4 sitios arqueológicos domésticos y ceremoniales fechados o atribuibles al siglo XIX-XX. De esta manera, se discuten temas relativos a la autoctonía o aloctonía de la cultura material encontrada en cada tipo de espacio y se constata así la co-presencia o ausencia en alguno de los registros de los diversos ítems de cultura material analizados. Esperamos así contribuir al conocimiento de los procesos de incorporación del territorio fueguino a la sociedad occidental y de desestructuración de la sociedad nativa Yámana/Yagán.

Keywords: Zooarchaeology Bird and fish remains Southern Patagonia Tierra del Fuego Middle and late Holocene a b s t r a c t This paper presents a review of the zooarchaeological representations of birds and fish in coastal archaeological sites of southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego (47 e55 S). The spatial and temporal variations of this faunal record are assessed in order to understand their contribution in human subsistence in different geographic and cultural settings between 6500 and 100 BP. Spatially, the importance of birds and fish in human subsistence was similar between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts along the Holocene, although differences in taxonomic compositions of bird bone assemblages are observed among regions. Temporally, the analysis suggests an increase in bird hunting in the considered area in the last 3000 years, while an intensification of fishing activities can be proposed for the archipelagic area for that time period.

En este trabajo se presenta el análisis de machacadores óseos (n=170) sobre guanaco registrados en dos sitios ubicados en el norte de Tierra del Fuego (Argentina), Las Vueltas 1 y Perro 1, correspondientes a sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras pedestres. En este marco, se presenta una revisión bibliográfica de estos artefactos de toda Patagonia, con el fin de estudiar su distribución espacial, localización, características morfológicas (Formas bases, partes anatómicas, etc.) y cronología. Metodológicamente, el trabajo se divide en 4 partes: 1) Desarrollo de colección de referencia que abarcó la búsqueda de materia prima, selección de unidad anatómica, descarne, elaboración de artefactos, 2) El uso de los machacadores experimentales, 3) el análisis macro y microscópicos de las piezas experimentales y 4) el análisis de los artefactos arqueológicos. Tierra del Fuego is one of the southernmost insular territories of the planet. Hunter-gatherer populations inhabited it from the end of the last glaciation up to the beginning of thetwentieth century. In this paper, we mention different archaeological sites giving testimony of strategies adopted by hunter-gatherers in the occupation of the insular territory. Nevertheless, most of the investigations concentrate on the northern and central steppes and on the southern coasts. The goal of our research is to study the characteristics of human occupation in the central forests. Fieldwork hasled to the discovery of archaeological sites in different environments, in a variety of locations,and displaying wide functional variability. Besides campsites we have also discovered and stud-ied a ceremonial site. The results summarized here confirm that the subantarctic forest consti-tuted an abundant environment; a privileged landscape rich in different kinds of resources, andintensely exploited by the native populations

En este trabajo exploraremos la conformación de una cultura visual occidental sobre dos pueblos originarios fueguinos, que asoció a los Shelk´nam/Haush con un ethos cazador terrestre y a los Yámana/Yagán con un ethos cazador marino. Para ello, analizamos 513 fotografías de Shelk´nam/Haush y 428 de Yámana/Yagán y las combinamos con la información de 58 fuentes escritas sobre los Shelk´nam/Haush y 103 sobre los Yámana/Yagán y con datos arqueológicos de los territorios de dichas sociedades. La comparación de esos registros permite discutir: a)  la visibilidad diferencial de los artefactos asociados a un modo de vida cazador terrestre -arcos y flechas- y aquellos asociados a un modo de vida cazador marino -arpones-,  b) el/los género/s asociado/s a ambas actividades de caza. Se concluye que la visibilidad de los artefactos en la cultura visual y escrita asociada a cada sociedad refiere tanto a la idiosincrasia de las propias sociedades, como a los imaginarios de los viajeros occidentales que los contactaron.

Selk’nam is an obsolescent Chonan language, spoken in what is nowadays Tierra del Fuego, in the southernmost territories of the South American Republics of Chile and Argentina. Its people suffered from a progressive decimation, which ended in the last decades of the 20th century when the last fluent speakers of the language passed away. This was not only a great loss in humanitarian terms but a substantive loss of important anthropological, historical and linguistic information which we will not be able to retrieve again.

Unfortunately, the last fluent speakers of the language passed away between the seventies and the eighties, leaving any attempt to write a complete modern scientific description of the language as an unattainable dream. In the case of this language, its sociolinguistic situation as well as its state of description correlate substantially. This situation surprisingly changed in the last decade, when a Selk’nam speaker appeared in the media and the hope for a new description of the language became feasible.

In this talk some characteristics of Selk’nam will be discussed: its very Andean-like phonological system, its grammatical profile, some interesting facts related to its syntax as well as some innovative sociolinguistic phenomena happening in the zone where the language was spoken, what I dub, the “New Selk’nam”.

Este trabajo se centra en el desarrollo teórico y metodológico de un conjunto de herramientas de estadística espacial destinadas al análisis del registro arqueológico intra-sitio. Se propone, a través de un extenso caso de estudio situado en el Canal Beagle (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina), el sitio arqueológico Lanashuaia II, la aplicación de métodos cuantitativos sobre los datos coordenados provenientes de su excavación. El objetivo final es evaluar la validez de estas herramientas con el objetivo de inferir la organización espacial de las actividades en sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras y discernir entre los procesos de formación del registro sociales y naturales. En el ejemplo propuesto, diversas áreas de actividad fueron delimitadas, así como el proceso progresivo que diacrónicamente condujo a la estructuración espacial del sitio por el grupo que allí habitó. Hasta la llegada de los colonos europeos, varios grupos humanos practicaban con éxito una economía cazadora-recolectora en la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. Las descripciones etnográficas son abundantes, pero el uso de las plantas apenas recibió atención en comparación con otras actividades cotidianas como la caza. Como consecuencia, para tener una visión lo más completa posible de la economía fueguina, es nece- sario combinar la información etnográfica con la proveniente de la arqueología.
La huella que cada uno de los recursos empleados deja en el registro arqueológico es muy diferente. Algunos restos como los vegetales son frágiles, de pequeño tamaño, y requieren de técnicas de recuperación específicas que, frecuentemente, no se emplean. Por eso, aunque el uso de plantas por parte de sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras contemporáneas está bien documentado etnográficamente, durante décadas el papel de las plantas en las economías cazadoras-recolectoras pasadas se interpretó como marginal sobre la base de los escasos restos encontrados en los yacimientos arqueológicos. Este trabajo resume los resultados del pri- mer estudio carpológico1 realizado en la zona, inscrito en el marco de una investigación etnoarqueológica.

A proposal to estimate the Trampling Fragmentation Potential (TFP) on lithic artifacts from their metric attributes is presented. We apply a data mining technique known as decision tree to experimental datasets obtained in several trampling experiments. Results show that the ratio of area to thickness is the main element affecting the probability of breakage on lithic artifacts by trampling. Also, a maximum thickness value for lithic artifacts prone to be broken by trampling is estimated. Finally, we argue establishing threshold values for trampling potential allows distinguishing incidental fractures with similar traits and different origins.

Zooarchaeological data about a sea lion bone bead from Thetis Bay (Tierra del Fuego) is
presented herein. They are the result of the activities carried out by a factory that exploited
commercially colonies settled in the area during the 1940s. First field work on this bone
accumulation pointed to present preliminary data on density, anatomical and taxonomic
abundance, as well as taphonomic observations with the goal to discuss aspects related to site
formation processes.Though the taxonomic composition can be considered almost monospecific
and is interpreted that the most of these remains resulted from the tasks in the factory,
the former indicators suggest the secondary nature of this record, which would have been
accumulated by tides, transport in the discarded remains.

Análisis de isótopos estables de ∂13C y ∂15N de restos humanos de Tierra del Fuego conservadas en colecciones de museo y recuperados de excavaciones arqueológicas. La muestra data de los últimos 1500 años A.P. y proviene de los cuatro territorios etnográficos conocidos históricamente en la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego (Selk’nam, Haush, Yámana, Kaweskar). Los análisis confirman la caracterización etnohistórica aceptada pero los resultados señalan también una mayor complejidad para la dinámica alimenticia de la región Haush y Yámana.

Originally written in 1997 this is the English translation of  a PhD Spanish manuscrit.  The intention of this work is to explain how bone was used as a raw material on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). Three main lines of research are followed by the author: 1) The determination of the mechanical properties of bones used for tools; 2) the proposal and evaluation of a model derived from a Darwinian Evolutionary Theory; 3) metric and morphological analysis of Fueguian bone tools. The temporal scale chosen for this work is from the earliest arrival of humans on the island – archaeologically recorded as some 10,000 years bp, up to the 19th century. As a way of approaching this work, and in order to be able to discuss the model which will be proposed in Chapter 6, a history of Bone tool research (with a special focus on Europe, where the main trend in such studies was developed) is presented in Chapter 2. The following chapters are devoted to specifying and analyzing the way in which these factors appear in Tierra del Fuego. Firstly (Chapter 3), the mechanical properties of bone material are referred to. In Chapter 4 the environmental and geological setting of Isla Grande is presented. In Chapter 5 a synthesis of all that is known about the Fuegian populations from an archaeological point of view is presented. Chapter 6 develops the theoretical framework used for the study. A bone raw material model is discussed and methods and materials employed are discussed in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 gives results of the determination of mechanical properties of Tierra del Fuego bones. Chapter 9 gives the results of tool morphological analysis, and Chapter 10 discusses these results. Conclusions and further paths for research follow in Chapter 11.

This paper compiles information from 97 zooarchaeological contexts from 75 archaeological sites placed in different regions of Tierra del Fuego archipelago, with chronologies ranging from the Early Holocene to the first contact with Western society. By means of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) analysis and abundance indexes based on NISP values, the abundance of different taxa through space is assessed. This generates average values of consumption of wildlife in a region or at a particular time in the past. Whereas most zooarchaeology analyses are site-specific, this paper uses a supra-regional scale to understand the zooarchaeological structure in its natural and cultural context.

"The technological organization and lithic raw material procurement of Holocene hunter-gatherers have been topics of considerable interest in northern Tierra del Fuego Island. Ongoing archaeological investigations indicate that most of the rocks employed by native human populations came from secondary deposits of fluvio-glacial and marine origin. However, a primary geological source for two distinctive lithologies has been recently discovered near the Chorrillo Miraflores Valley (Tierra del Fuego, Chile). These raw materials became the focus of further research since one of them (a silicified tuff) has been identified in several archaeological sites of Tierra del Fuego. Some of these sites are located more than a hundred kilometers away from the source. A regional survey of potential lithic sources along with petrographic and geochemical analyses confirmed that the silicified tuff is only available at Chorrillo Miraflores. Here we present the technological analysis of artifacts manufactured on Miraflores silicified tuff that were recovered from the Argentine portion of northern Tierra del Fuego composed of Espíritu Santo and San Sebastian Capes. The role of utilitarian currencies in the prehistoric use of this lithology is assessed through the application of the Metcalfe and Barlow (1992) field-processing model. The results show that this raw material may not have been exclusively selected for its flaking quality, although an alternative functional efficiency hypothesis is also introduced. Finally, its spatially restricted availability as well as unique macroscopic aspect suggests its selection and use may have been mainly influenced by social factors.
