A spin off from my bass Strait sojourn
Birding, as the killing and processing mutton birds is known is an important economic activity in the Furneaux Islands in Bass Strait. This paper aims to look at the archaeological remains of birding sites in the Furneaux Islands based on field work undertaken as part of a broader survey of post-contact archaeological sites in the Outer Furneaux Islands in 1990 and 1991 (Sim and Stuart 1991, Gaitte and Sim 1992).
Since undertaking this work Iranay Skira has completed a doctral thesis on birding (1995) and published several papers (1997A, !997B) and this body of work must be seen as the definitive study on the history of the mutton bird industry in Tasmania. This paper however takes a look at the archaeological manifestations of that history and thus can be seen as an industrial archaeological study rather than attempting to duplicate Skira’s work.

Birds are the most remarkable species of the earth. They are so beautiful, diverse and amazing that we stand in awe of them. Watching birds is a popular hobby among millions of people around the globe. People with their best binoculars for birding watch birds for hours, studying and watching their life and living pattern.
Each species is special, from a common house sparrow to the majestic bald eagle birds are spectacular. Such is the cultural, demographic and historic importance of birds that, many nation’s flags have birds as their national symbol. So here are 15 interesting and amazing facts about birds:

Here, I review the economic potential of birding for communitybased conservation, outline potential benefits and problems, and provide suggestions for improving the conservation value of birding. I focus on less-developed countries, especially in the tropics, and I provide a few examples from my own birding experience in more than 30 less-developed countries, to supplement limited published data. Even though birding tourism has the potential to improve the financial and environmental wellbeing of local communities, many governments are unaware of this potential. Research on the economic and environmental impacts of birding is sorely needed, and much needs to be done to increase the financial contribution of birding to local communities.

The emergence of leisure activities organized around the observation of nonhuman animals in urban areas can also be seen as a boon to tourism when they are designated as desirable among humans. Zoos, urban foraging walks, and natural history museums are examples of how humans come to apprehend animals in urban settings. This tourism is another way that nonhuman animals work for humans beyond agriculture (bees for pollination), industrial food supply (animal protein in the food chain), companion animals (the multi-billion dollar pet industry) and sentinel species (barometers of habitat destruction and climate change). This essay analyzes the growth of urban birding or avitourism as an activity that drives humans and revenue to urban centers. Two sociologists and a birder/wildlife photographer consider the ways human and avian traffic flows to cities for spectacle.

Common Nighthawk’s are impacted by the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains; they also have an influence on the ecological and geological environment. This paper will focus on the characteristics of the Common Nighthawk, previously conducted case studies on how the species influence their environment and methods by which the environment influences their survival. Results of the seven cases studies will elucidate some of the reasons for the declining number of Common Nighthawk’s in the eastern Sierra Nevada.
Data collected from the Sea and Sage Audubon Mammoth Field Trip in July 2017, for specifically Mono County Park, will also be presented to indicate the prevalence of a Common Nighthawk in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Additional data analysis may indicate whether the numbers of Common Nighthawk, and other native riparian habitat bird species, are increasing, decreasing or remaining relatively stable in the eastern Sierra Nevada. By observing the number changes, birders and/or researchers can make intelligent informed decisions regarding the cause of the habitation number changes and further analyze what the causes are. In a review of seven cases studies, a common result across the surveys indicated that there is a general decline in the number of Common Nighthawks.

Birds are nature’s most amazing and fascinating creatures. Can you imagine a world without birds? I am sure the answer would be a sure no. The birds give us a reason for joy while Watching and even listening to them. They have been an inspiration to numerous poets, writers, and musicians since time immortal. Every sane human being with a tender heart is a bird lover. So when you gift someone with anything related to birds like binoculars for birding through which they can watch the birds closely or a dress with a bird print they would love you for that.

Children today have the most chaotic world to live in. They are more connected to the gadgets and less to the mother nature. Family time is shrinking day by day. Children today are losing the touch with nature and hence with their inner self. Developing a hobby like birding can transform their world altogether. It is a perfect hobby that has the ability to bring them closer to their immediate surroundings, and develop an appreciation for their environment and fellow species. As a parent introducing your child to the world of birds would be the greatest of gifts that you can give to your child. It would be a hobby that would remain with your child lifelong. It would develop the qualities of compassion, patience, and love in your child. Qualities that the world is loosing fast. Thus a simple act of giving your child with the best binoculars for birding can change your child's life forever. The benefits of birdwatching on the kids are amazing: Brings your child closer to Nature: Today kids are confined to the walls of their house or schools. They have lost their connection with nature. All their time is consumed by smartphones, computers or video games. They have lost touch with their environment and surroundings. As a result, children are losing the necessary emotions of being compassionate, caring and loving. When you introduce your child to briding, you change all that completely. Birding introduces your child with a completely new world. Watching a bird fly, building its nest, feeding its children and playing with other birds dazzles your child. And with good birding binoculars, your child sees all this very close to his or her eyes.

Saka kuşunun çağdaş Yunancadaki ismi Κοινή Καρδερίνα (Koiní Karderína) iken Antalya’daki yöresel isminin de Kadirne oluşu, benim etnoornitolojiye olan merakımı ve insan kuş arasındaki etkileşim biçimlerini bilimsel olarak ortaya koyma isteğimi iyiden iyiye arttırdı ve yıllar sonra o kızıl saka llı bilge insanın beni aramasıyla şu an okuduğunuz derleme yazı ortaya çıktı.

Widely credited to Alexander Wilson, the solution to the mystery of the bobolink's seasonal plumage changes was in fact deduced more than a decade earlier by North America's most badly undervalued early ornithologist, Louis-Pierre Vieillot.

Nothing could have been simpler than ‘birdwatching.’ An activity by that name would have required nothing more than one person, alone, watching birds, any birds ... But in the early 1970s, we were not birdwatching. We were birding, and that made all the difference. ... We became a community of birders, with the complications that human societies always have; and although it was the birds that had brought us together, our story became a human story after all. At the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Turkey has tremendous biological (not to mention cultural and historical) wealth that is often underappreciated. This is a combination of three of world’s 37 major plant zones meeting in Turkey and various mountain ranges further dividing the country into a diversity of biomes. These range from temperate rainforest along the Black Sea, where tea, hazelnuts and oranges are grown and Caucasian Grouse and Caspian Snowcocks thrive under the protective shadow of Caucasus mountains, to sub-desert scrub in the southeast where Nile monitors and striped hyenas share the hot plains with See-see Partridges and Desert Larks.

Large body size, the defining characteristic of "charismatic megafauna," is often viewed as the most significant correlate of higher public interest in species. However , common, local species (many of which are not large) can also generate public interest. We explored the relative importance of body size versus local occurrence in patterns of online interest in birds using a large sample of digital human-wildlife interactions (367 million Wikipedia pageviews) that included more than 10,000 bird species and a range of cultural and geographic contexts (represented by 25 Wikipedia language editions). We compared interest in Wikipedia, as measured by pageviews, with a bird's body size and its regional observation frequency (using data from eBird.org). We found that local species (i.e., those that occur in the wild in the country responsible for the majority of a Wikipedia language edition's pageviews) attract more pageviews than global species. Both body size and observation frequency had a positive correlation with Wikipedia pageviews across languages, but eBird observation frequency explained more of the variance in pageviews on average. In a model that included both observation frequency and body size, observation frequency was a significantly better predictor of pageviews than body size in 24 of 25 languages. Our results demonstrate that the opportunity to encounter birds in the wild is a significant correlate of increased online interest in birds across multiple linguistic and geographic contexts. This relationship provides insight into why some species attract greater interest than others and emphasizes the overlooked potential of common species in conservation marketing.
