Cambrai

This article reevaluates the monastic interventions of Bishop Gerard I of Cambrai-Arras (r. 1012-1051) through an analysis of his predecessors' gradual acquisition of secular power and a comparitive inquiry into the 'reforms' within the counties of Hainaut and Flanders.

Dans cet article, je veux analyser l'image de Gérard dans son rôle d'avocat du droit canonique en comparant la présentation d'élections épiscopales dans " Les Gestes " à des dispositions spécifiques tirées de la Bible, de textes des Pères de l'Église, d'actes conciliaires et de lettres papales. En premier lieu, j'essaie de découvrir quels canons étaient connus chez l'auteur des " Gestes " et chez Gérard, l'évêque de Cambrai, bien qu'il soit difficile de faire une distinction stricte entre ces figures vu qu'on ne connaît Gérard qu'à travers les mots de l'auteur et par les lettres citées qui seraient de sa main. De plus, j'y mettrai la lumière sur quelques cas d'élections épiscopales du XIe siècle dans lesquels Gérard est incontestablement peint comme un plaideur des prescriptions religieuses. En fin de compte, je démontre que " Les Gestes " n'emploie qu'une interprétation d'une sélection de règles spécifiques au lieu de se servir de la tradition canonique dans son entier, et que la désignation de Gérard lui-même, à strictement parler, n'était pas non plus complètement conforme aux règles. Les règles sur l'élection épiscopale était en d'autres mots pas aussi par lettre qu'elles sont décrites dans " Les Gestes ".

This article considers the institutional response to the Iconoclastic Fury and the iconoclasm of the early 1580s in the southern provinces of the Netherlands. Although the restoration of Catholicism is more often associated with the early seventeenth century, this article demonstrates that the reconstruction of churches and reestablishment of worship took place a generation earlier in the immediate aftermath of the religious violence. Furthermore this restoration was a priority for the government in the Netherlands, in particular for Margaret of Parma and her son Alexander Farnese, as they sought to regain control of the region and assert the authority of the crown. In particular, they encouraged the use of the ecclesiastical rites of consecration and reconciliation to symbolise the cleansing and purification of the religious landscape after the profane actions of the iconoclasts and adherents of the Reformed faith.

The general ideas of these reviews published on the various Amazon sites are:

1- This is only the British point of view and it reaches the level of quasi jingoism at times.
2- The Germans – and later the Russians, white and red alike, are depicted as pure monsters.
3- The author pretends the war went on up to 1919 When British and American troops were withdrawn from Russia where they had been supporting the White Czarists against the Red Communists.
4- All British or American politicians are exonerated as for the decision to start the war and the way it was managed. The author pretends consistently and comprehensively that the mess of that war was only the responsibility of generals who were too far away from the troops, too socially vain, and highly incompetent.
5- The only politicians that are slightly quoted, nearly on the sly, are the Kaiser and Lenin, though in Russia the two white and red camps are depicted and named. But the name of Trotsky is kept out of the campaign though he was the inventor of the Red Army.
6- Even the French generals who massacred thousands of men by firing them for the example when they became rebellious, like Pétain, are nicely kept secret.
7- The Peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk is not quoted and it becomes the German victory on the eastern front.
8- The Peace Treaty of Versailles is not quoted though we all know today it was one of the main causes of the rise of Nazism and Hitler.
9- Charley’s final silent bubble seems to say that there never is a last war, that we have to fight in all the wars we have to fight in, that it is a human duty to do it. And that conclusion is political.

Le graffiti qui fait l’objet de cette étude est un bateau. Il représente le seul graffiti naval parmi les centaines de graffitis répertoriés à ce jour sur les diverses parois du château de Selles : l’intérêt de son étude est d’autant plus grand qu’il constitue, dans l’état actuel du recensement, un unicum dans le vaste répertoire des signes et symboles gravés au sein de ce château.

Cet article traite d'une étude de l'utilité de la stylométrie comme outil pour les diplomatistes, à base de ma recherche doctorale. De plus, ce texte introduit les analyses prévues pour une communication pendant le colloque "La formule au Moyen Âge" (juin 2021).

Artykuł przedstawia wolontariat jako odpowiedź na dwa wielkie wyzwania współczesności: starzenia się społeczeństw i potrzebę uczestnictwa społecznego obywateli. Prezentowane w nim są wyniki badań jakościowych przeprowadzonych w Cambrai na północy Francji w trzech instytucjach pozarządowych i jednej szkole prywatnej. Obraz uzyskany na podstawie badań został skonfrontowany z danymi statystycznymi z Polski i Francji. Główną różnicą po-między wolontariatem w tych dwóch państwach jest wiek wolontariuszy: we Francji są to w większości osoby starsze, w Polsce głównie młodzież. W ostatnich latach we Francji tendencja ta zaczęła się zmieniać, a aktywność obywateli na tym polu wzrasta. Zmiany dokonujące się w Polsce są mniej optymistyczne – wolontariuszy ubywa, a dysproporcje wieku pozostają takie same.

Le fonds municipal de la ville de Cambrai possède de très beaux vestiges liturgiques anciens, dont plusieurs manuscrits datés du IXe au XIIIe siècle. Un examen approfondi du contenu de plusieurs volumes hagiographiques, sur la base des travaux de Guy Philippart et de François Dolbeau, permet de constater l'étroite parenté de certains recueils provenant de trois lieux distincts, mais géographiquement proches : le chapitre de la cathédrale Notre-Dame, le monastère du Saint-Sépulcre et l'abbaye Saint-Aubert, tous trois situés à Cambrai (mss Cambrai, BM, 854, 855, 856-857, 863-864, 865 et 1224).
Ce travail permet d'établir les premiers jalons permettant la reconstitution partielle de quatre légendiers cambrésiens : trois volumes anciens entièrement perdus et un autre plus récent comportant d'importantes lacunes (ms. Cambrai, BM, 1224). Grâce aux travaux de François Dolbeau, un cinquième, le légendier per circulum anni de Saint-Aubert de Cambrai (ms. Cambrai, BM, 856-857), peut être restitué à l'aide du ms. Bruxelles, Bibl. Boll., 98 et du Legendarium Flandrense. Ce dernier rapprochement révèle la parenté de ce groupe de manuscrits hagiographiques avec le « grand légendier de Flandre ». L'enquête permet aussi d'attirer l'attention des éditeurs sur les mss. Cambrai, BM, 863-864, 865 et 1224, qui renferment plusieurs vies composées au cours du XIe siècle sur des saints vénérés localement : la proximité des traditions textuelles transmises par ces témoins avec les originaux et les archétypes perdus est probable.
