Arras

Article exposant les relations qui ont uni Verlaine et la ville d'Arras - une des meilleures représentantes de l'esprit du "Nord bien" que l'auteur développe dans de nombreuses oeuvres de vers ou de prose, et notamment le fragment "Vieille Ville" spécifiquement consacré à la préfecture du Pas-de-Calais.

Nel presente contributo si focalizza inizialmente l’attenzione sul carattere eterodosso delle chansons di Jehan Bretel (Prince del Puy di Arras), nelle quali il poeta esprime la sua insoddisfazione nei confronti dei dettami dell’amore cortese proponendo una ideologia amorosa fondata su principi più pragmatici, opposta a quella adottata dai trovieri tradizionalisti (come ad esempio Robert del Castel). Allargando il campo di indagine ai jeux-partis e ad altre liriche composte da autori vicini a Jehan Bretel (in particolare Jehan de Grieviler e Lambert Ferri) è possibile delineare una comune linea critica, coerente per termini e temi, che oppone alla vacuità della fin’amor un amore in cui l’amata è vista come compagna adatta all’amante, con cui costruire una solida relazione destinata a perfezionarsi con il matrimonio. Dopo aver inquadrato questa nuova ideologia amorosa, a cui si dà il nome di amour soufisante, all’interno di una generale tendenza anti-cortese presente nella letteratura di Arras, si fornisce un’ipotesi storico-sociologica sulle cause che possano aver contribuito alla sua definizione.

In this paper I examine at first the heterodox nature of Jehan Bretel’s (Prince of the Arras’ Puy) chansons, in which he expresses his frustration relative to the precepts of courtly love, offering a love ideology founded on a more pragmatic value, in opposition to the ideology accepted by traditionalist trouvères (for example Robert del Castel). Analyzing more texts, as the jeux-partis and other verses composed by some poets near to Jehan Bretel (especially Jehan de Grieviler and Lambert Ferri), it’s possible perceiving a common line, expressed by coherent topics and vocabulary, that opposes at vacuity of fin’amor a love where the woman is a partner appropriate to the lover, with whom achieving a committed relationship that will become perfect with the marriage. Then I contextualize this new love-ideology, called amour soufisante, in a general anti-courtly tendency of Arras literature, and I try to express a historic-sociologic hypothesis that could explain the origin of this heterodox love ideology.

Considering the early modern arras as a third place means considering the full experience of theatre: its dramaturgy, poetics and reflexivity. It enables us to envisage an object in terms of both its material and poetic existence on the stage and on the page. This agency is deployed on the stage and page through Webster’s use of the extended metaphor of fabric in The Duchess of Malfi. This chapter analyses the role of fabrics in the play’s performance and development as the basis of Webster’s dramaturgical reinvention of revenge tragedy into a genre that might not be that interested in revenge. To discuss how Webster revisits revenge tragedy through a material prism requires observing first how Webster lures the spectator into a deceptive spectacle of intimacy redolent of conventional comedy. The tragic manipulation of the comic topos of love thanks to the arras leads us to consider it less as a dramaturgical instrument than as a mode of writing. Webster relies on the arras and its avatars to create a paroxysmal dramaturgy of cruelty successfully fusing the conventional and the realistic to switch the focus from revenge to injustice.

This article reevaluates the monastic interventions of Bishop Gerard I of Cambrai-Arras (r. 1012-1051) through an analysis of his predecessors' gradual acquisition of secular power and a comparitive inquiry into the 'reforms' within the counties of Hainaut and Flanders.

Resumo: O presente artigo busca averiguar o uso das arras e da cláusula penal em contratos imobiliários. Os efeitos patrimoniais, que nada mais são que o objeto detido do estudo, decorrem do inadimplemento contratual e possuem caráter punitivo, indenizatório e penitencial. O que vale ressaltar é que sua aplicação deve ser sopesada com as regras e princípios da autonomia negocial dos contratantes e com questões estruturantes particulares aos contratos imobiliários. Abstract: The present article seeks to determine the use of down payments and the penalty clause in real estate contracts. The financial effects, which are nothing more than the object of this analysis, originate from the default of the contract and possess a punitive, compensatory and penitential nature. It is worth highlighting that its application must be weighed in with the rules and principles pertaining to the negotiating autonomy of the contracting parties and with structural matters particular to real estate contracts.

Réalisé en 1716 par les ingénieurs militaires au service du roi de France, le plan-relief d’Arras est considéré comme étant d’une grande fiabilité par Honoré Bernard, qui s’est chargé de sa restauration et de son étude entre 1978 et 1993. Depuis une quarantaine d'années, l’intérêt scientifique de cette maquette est reconnu par nombre de chercheurs qui s’intéressent à la ville d’Ancien Régime tant d’un point de vue de la physionomie urbaine que du système fortifié. S’inscrivant dans ce contexte, la présente communication se propose de confronter les données archéologiques concernant les fortifications bastionnées arrageoises aux représentations du plan-relief, dans une expertise placée sous le signe de la pluridisciplinarité.

L'article analyse une étonnante image de la Vierge dans un manuscrit copié à Arras en 1124, sur la commande d'Etienne Harding, abbé de Cîteaux. Cette miniature, généralement considérée comme une simple image de dédicace, est bien plus complexe qu'il n'y paraît: en transcendant les éléments architecturaux (arcade, chapiteaux, tentures, autel...), l'image met en effet en scène une vision mariale entre ciel et terre et donne vie à une miniature-apparition. De plus, un jeu de renvois à travers dfférents éléments de l'image (couronne, livre, mer, étoiles...), ainsi que les inscriptions qui courent tout autour du cadre, font de cette image-apparition un "lieu de prière".

Éste es un libro de historia de la familia. El sujeto, el protagonista, es la familia y los cambios que experimentó entre los siglos XVI y XVII en la Navarra prepirenaica. Entre los estudios realizados sobre la familia pirenaica dominan los realizados por antropólogos y juristas, que tratar de dar una visión sistemática de la "casa" como institución. En su enfoque, predomina el deseo de mostrar cada uno de los elementos que la integran, y en ellos la casa aparece como una institución muy elaborada e integrada en unidad. Nuestro enfoque es distinto. Sin olvidar el carácter unitario, presentamos el proceso que le dio origen, describiendo la situación anterior para mostrar después los cambios progresivos que la modificaron. Queremos presentar cómo la casa fue una solución entre las múltiples posibles que pudieron adoptarse y comprenderla como una combinación de elementos viejos y nuevos que, al asociarse, dieron lugar a una nueva realidad. Hubo ventajas, inconvenientes y limitaciones en una institución que contribuyó decisivamente a configurar el paisaje social del Pirineo de Navarra en los siglos siguientes: la casa se erigió en el corazón de la sociedad que surgió después del siglo XVII.

This article considers the institutional response to the Iconoclastic Fury and the iconoclasm of the early 1580s in the southern provinces of the Netherlands. Although the restoration of Catholicism is more often associated with the early seventeenth century, this article demonstrates that the reconstruction of churches and reestablishment of worship took place a generation earlier in the immediate aftermath of the religious violence. Furthermore this restoration was a priority for the government in the Netherlands, in particular for Margaret of Parma and her son Alexander Farnese, as they sought to regain control of the region and assert the authority of the crown. In particular, they encouraged the use of the ecclesiastical rites of consecration and reconciliation to symbolise the cleansing and purification of the religious landscape after the profane actions of the iconoclasts and adherents of the Reformed faith.

Entre les XIIe et XVIIIe siècles, le Petit Marché d'Arras (actuelle place des Héros) apparaît comme étant la vitrine de la ville en concentrant les symboles de la piété locale, du commerce et des autorités comtale et scabinale. La réfection du pavage de la place des Héros en 2011 a permis de mettre au jour les vestiges de plusieurs de ces symboles sous la forme d'une voirie (la rue des Rôtisseurs) et de fondations maçonnées d'anciennes structures telles que la chapelle des Ardents, les aubettes commerciales, ou encore la Maison Rouge. Bien connus de l'histoire locale, ces bâtiments n'avaient jusqu'alors pas pu être localisés avec précision et leur composition, tant interne qu'externe, était aussi sujette à interrogation. La présente communication se propose, à partir des observations archéologiques, du recours à des sources textuelles inédites (devis de construction, comptes de travaux et avis de démolition) et à l'analyse des représentations anciennes, de préciser l'apparition, la composition, le développement et le fonctionnement de ces différents équipements urbains, mais aussi les liens qui ont existé entre eux. La mise en commun de ces différentes sources d'information et la finesse des données qu'elles comportent permettent également de proposer une modélisation 3D de chacun de ces éléments et, ainsi, de restituer la physionomie de cet espace public à différents moments aux époques médiévale et moderne.

Most often, Ovidian allusions are woven into Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene (Books I–III, 1590) without developing into an open re-telling of myths. One significant exception occurs in Book III, Canto 1: there the action comes to a temporary stop in order to make space for a detailed description of the tapestry in the hall of Castle Joyous, which depicts the story of Venus and Adonis. This article intends to offer a reading of that episode that focuses on the importance of materiality and self-reflexivity as keys to its significance at the opening of Book III, and in the larger structure of The Faerie Queene.

Here, the descriptive powers of the poet are both foregrounded and questioned, in a double movement of ekphrasis which gestures towards a serious interrogation of the value of representation, both in poetry and the visual arts. Implicitly, it is the poet (and through him, the reader him/herself) that must question his/her role and participation in the gradual and often painful awareness of the body that is foregrounded throughout Book III.

The Western Front has become, once again, and after 100 years, an important and increasingly popular tourist destination. The Centenary is already encouraging large numbers of visitors to engage with this highly poignant landscape of war and to commemorate the sacrifice and loss of a previous generation. Interest is also being sharpened in the ‘places of war’ as battle-sites, trench-systems, bunkers and mine craters gain a clearer identity as war heritage.

For the first time this book brings together the three strands of heritage, landscape and tourism to provide a fresh understanding of the multi-layered nature of the Western Front. The book approaches the area as a rich dynamic landscape which can be viewed in a startling variety of ways: historically, materially, culturally, and perceptually. To illustrate these two dominant interpretations of the region’s landscape – commemorative and heritage – are highlighted and their relationship to tourism explored. Tourism is a lens through which these layers can be peeled away, and each understood and interacted with according to the individual’s own knowledge, motivation, and degree of emotional engagement. Tourism is not regarded here as a passive phenomenon, but as an active agent that can determine, dictate and inscribe this evocative landscape. 

The Western Front:  Heritage, Landscape and Tourism is a timely addition to our increasing interest in the First World War and the places where it was fought. It will be indispensable to those who seek a deeper understanding of the conflict from previously undervalued perspectives.

Stephen Miles is an Affiliate Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow’s Crichton Campus in Dumfries. He studied at the universities of Durham and Sheffield before undertaking a PhD at the University of Glasgow which he completed in 2012. He has previously written on ‘dark’ tourism and sense of place at conflict sites.

En tant que ville capitale du comté d’Artois, Arras fut à plusieurs reprises le théâtre de l’expression de la puissance et de la splendeur de la cour princière des Valois-Bourgogne. Les travaux entrepris en 1402 pour le mariage d’Antoine de Rethel ou en 1430 pour la reconstruction de la  maison de justice comtale en témoignent. De ces chantiers subsiste une précieuse documentation dont l’étude éclaire les rouages de la production comptable bourguignonne et la gestion des chantiers édilitaires.

As the seat of the county of Artois, Arras was on several occasions the setting where the power and splendor of the princely court of the Valois-
Burgundys was expressed. The work undertaken in 1402 for the marriage of Antoine de Rethel or in 1430 to reconstruct the count’s courthouse testify to this. Invaluable documentation remains for these worksites; studying them sheds light on the workings of Burgundian accounting and the management of administrative worksites.

Nacido de la ciudad, el teatro francés del siglo XIII manifiesta su espacio dramático a través del paisaje urbano. Para estudiar la forma de los lugares teatrales del Jeu de la Feuillée de Adam de la Halle hay pues que estudiar los contornos de la ciudad de Arras. La localización geográfica y la topografía urbanística de esta ciudad juegan un papel fundamental en la estructuración dramática del Jeu al punto de configurar la deixis espacial de la obra de ficción.
La carencia en el siglo XIII de lugares específicamente teatrales obliga a la representación a una simbiosis arquitectónica con el espacio que la acoge, cualquier rincón de la geografía urbana puede así transformarse en espacio de la ficción, lo que evidencia la ductilidad y la adaptabilidad de los elementos que intervienen en la puesta en escena –el público, los actores, la acción– respecto al espacio que los contiene.
La evocación de la ciudad no se hace en el Jeu a través de una descripción pormenorizad sino a través de la inclusión de ciertos ‘detalles de realidad’ cuyo análisis permite descubrir en la ficción escénica un reflejo especular de la localización geográfica de Arras en el entorno artesiano, la estructuración bipartita de la ciudad entre ville y cité y, finalmente, la organización urbana de las calles y plazas de la ciudad de Arras.
Todas estas referencias reales se somenten a su transformación y su abstracción, a través de su su anexión a un mundo de ficción. Así, los personajes de la Feuillée proceden todos de poblaciones pertenecientes a la región de Artois, próximas a Arras. Como jemplo del proceso de resemantización al que se someten estas referencias, resaltaremos, Duisans, país natal del loco (v. 530): pueblo situado a 6 km. al oeste de Arras, su presencia desvela equívocos posibles: duisans significa ‘agréable, convenable’, lo leer ‘de-duisans’ (‘rejouissant’), o ‘dui sens’ (doble significado) o incluso ‘de doble personalidad’, es decir, ‘loco’ ; nacido en Duisans, el personaje de ‘Li dervés’ no podía ser sino… loco.
Para la localización de las coordenadas espaciales de su obra, Adam de la Halle da cuenta la distribución urbanística de una ciudad dividida en una parte antigua (la cité) habitada por los representantes del poder y de la iglesia y la ‘ville’ espacio de una burguesía efervescente de la que proceden los protagonistas de la obra.
El espacio del Jeu de la Feuillée es un microcosmo ficticio que remite a un macrocosmo real y exterior: la ciudad de Arras. Este juego especular de la Feuillée está dotado de un dinamismo que introduce una respiración permanente entre la escena y la ciudad, entre una realidad presente y una realidad ausente transformada en imaginario referencial, una refracción (circular) que convierte en indispensable la instauración del conflicto y el desarrollo del movimiento escénico. El análisis de las indicaciones deícticas permiten afirmar que, desde que un elemento de la realidad es incorporado al universo de ficción construido por el texto de la Feuillée, sufre una transformación sígnica que multiplica –inevitablemente– sus posibilidades de interpretación por parte del público.
La contextualización espacial del universo del Jeu permite reverberaciones de la realidad exterior sobre la ficción dramática pero, paradójicamente, la incorporación de la realidad no refuerza el ‘realismo’ del Jeu, sino que constituye un trampolín hacia lo imaginario y funcionan como indicadores fáticos que nos recuerdan que ‘estamos en el teatro’.

La prospection thématique menée sur le site des carrières Wellington et Blenheim a offert la possibilité d’observer l’exploitation souterraine de la craie de la fin du Moyen Âge et durant les Temps modernes. L’opération a mis au jour plusieurs fronts de taille et ateliers dont l’étude croisée des approches archéologique, géologique et historique a permis d’identifier la méthode d’extraction de la craie employée par les carriers et d’en comprendre les différentes étapes. En outre, les résultats obtenus sont encourageants et laissent entrevoir de nouvelles pistes de recherche que l’étude complète de la carrière Blenheim permettrait d’approfondir.
The thematic survey conducted in Arras (Pas-de-Calais), on the site of the Wellington and Blenheim quarries, offered the opportunity to observe the underground exploitation of chalk from the late Middle Ages and during modern times. The operation uncovered several face faces and workshops, whose cross-study of archaeological, geological and historical approaches made it possible to identify the method of chalk extraction used by the quarries and to understand the different stages. In addition, the results obtained are encouraging and suggest new avenues of research that could be explored further with a complete study of the Blenheim quarry.

Fondé au-dehors de la cité antique d’Arras par saint Aubert au VIIe siècle, l’oratoire commémorant le culte de saint Vaast dispose rapidement d’un rayonnement qui l’élève au rang d’abbaye, notamment grâce au soutien des rois de Francie occidentale. Richement dotés par ces derniers ainsi que par de grands seigneurs tels les comtes de Flandre, les abbés qui se succèdent organisent les terres sous la forme d’un réseau polynucléaire de lieux de production, dont plusieurs ont archéologiquement été abordés pour les IXe et Xe siècles. En parallèle, l’importance grandissante de son scriptorium et l’installation de la résidence principale des comtes de Flandre à proximité de l’abbaye contribuent au développement d’un bourg dès le Xe siècle. Dès lors, en tant que bonne gestionnaire de son riche patrimoine foncier et étant dotée de nombreuses prérogatives, l’abbaye organise le lotissement de ses terres et organise le réseau paroissial pour accueillir et encadrer ses hôtes, et développe de nombreux équipements économiques (moulins, pêcheries, etc.), tant sur le territoire de la ville naissante que dans ses environs plus ou moins lointains (banlieue et plats-pays), notamment grâce à son réseau de prévôtés. Forte et indépendante du pouvoir épiscopal installé dans l’ancienne cité antique, la nouvelle entité urbaine qui obtient le statut de ville au XIIe siècle, offre à Arras son caractère bicéphale qui marque le paysage pour sept siècles. L’unification d’Arras-Cité et d’Arras au sein d’une même enceinte accompagne par la même le déclin de l’abbaye Saint-Vaast.
La présente communication propose d’étudier, à la lumière des sources archéologiques, textuelles, iconographiques et planimétriques, l’apparition et le développement de l’abbaye Saint-Vaast, ainsi que son rôle dans la structuration et la gestion du territoire à l’échelle de la ville d’Arras, de sa banlieue et de son plat-pays. Ainsi, seront abordés les initiatives des moines, les jeux d’alliances qu’ils eurent avec les princes et le développement d’un réseau de prévôtés gestionnaires de son patrimoine. Ces axes prendront place entre les origines de l’abbaye, au VIIe siècle, et la reconstruction totale de l’établissement au XVIIIe siècle, qui fut suivi d’un déclin rapide de l’abbaye qu’officialisa la Révolution française.

Gautier de Coincy’s (or Coinci’s; d. 1236) miracle story of “A Woman who was healed at Arras” forms part of his vast collection of Marian miracles. This story features the obstacle-ridden trajectory of a female budding child saint toward a violent marriage that includes a bloody sexual assault and an illness that almost kills her. The many setbacks the young woman experiences in her aspirations to a saintly career mirror the problematic nature of the text’s genre. The focus constantly shifts between the would-be saint (with the generic markers – based on H.-U. Gumbrecht -- of hagiography, such as a calling vision of the Virgin, a vow of virginity, and healing powers granted to the woman) and the sinner (with the generic markers of the miracle, such as the Virgin’s protecting the woman’s chastity and later healing her).  “La Femme d’Arras” dramatizes the many obstacles on the path to sainthood and concomitantly illustrates the difficulty of defining medieval genres.
