Why didn’t Lamberto Vitali praise the artistic products of Morandi’s metaphysical phase as he did for works completed at other moments of the artist’s career? In Vitali’s writings on Morandi – in, for example, the different editions of his catalogue raisonné – the art historian doesn’t explicitly declare a preference. However, there is an evident change in the way he discusses the works of the artist’s metaphysical years (1918–1919). For instance, when he writes about the artist’s landscapes painted in the following years, between 1921 and 1925, he claims that they have a “tender sweetness in the representation, very far from the intellectual lucubrations of the Metaphysical Still Life.” This apparently banal and marginal question allows us, on the contrary, to consider Vitali’s reading of Morandi’s œuvre with a far broader perspective for which it becomes pivotal to take into consideration the collecting taste of the time. Through this reading of Vitali’s texts and of Morandi’s images, as well as an analysis of the contemporary market tendencies, it becomes possible to define the cultural reasons underlying Vitali’s taste.

The article aims to explain the first contacts between Franco Russoli and Fernanda Wittgens thanks to their correspondence from 1950, when the young officer of the Soprintendenza of Pisa was assigned to the Milanese one, to 1953, when he curated the Picasso exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan. Furthermore this work allows to highlight the contribution Russoli offered in organising the Parisian Exposition d’art Moderne Italien in 1950, when he acted on behalf of the Amici di Brera.

In ‘Futurist Painting: Technical Manifesto’ (1910) the Italian futurists claimed that ‘we are the Primitives of a new sensibility’. This ‘primitive’ can refer to Byzantine mosaics, early Renaissance paintings, and African fetishes, and the appropriation of all three by modern painting in Paris. Futurist art and theory, particularly the works of Umberto Boccioni, Gino Severini and Carlo Carrà between 1910 and 1919, contain visual and textual references to these ‘primitives’ – all enjoying revivals during this period – which demonstrate an awareness of both artworks and art‐historical interpretations. The essay addresses these references in the light of Boccioni's art‐historical diagram of 1913, which implies that art history passes through cycles, rather than evolving continuously. Arguing against the dominant discourse of progress around avant‐gardism, this essay contends that futurism's interest in the ‘primitive’ in these senses leads us to reconsider the nature of futurism's antipassatismo, and, therefore, the temporality of avant‐gardism.

L’articolo presenta i risultati della ricerca condotta sulle fonti iconografiche, dalle fotografie degli allestimenti storici sino alle riproduzioni dei dipinti a mezzo stampa, che ha permesso di documentare la presenza di rimaneggiamenti autografi in Simultaneità e Ritmi d'oggetti. Questi interventi, oltre a chiarire le cronologie delle opere, mostrano come il pittore intervenisse sui dipinti aggiornandone alcuni aspetti formali in relazione al procedere della sua ricerca linguistica. Ulteriori elementi sono emersi dalla considerazione delle fonti a stampa coeve che hanno permesso di rintracciare un probabile passaggio espositivo di Ritmi d’oggetti nel dicembre del 1911. L’evidenza che Simultaneità, dipinto nel 1913, nella sua facies attuale è frutto di una parziale ridipintura avvenuta tra il 1916 e il 1926 e che Ritmi d’oggetti, esposto verosimilmente già alla fine del 1911, è stato anch’esso rimaneggiato nel tempo permette di disporre di nuovi punti fermi stilistici e cronologici all’interno di una bibliografia che, in merito alle cronologie e ai ritocchi delle opere carrariane, è caratterizzata da molte incertezze.

Con el Manifesto técnico della letteratura futurista y el Supplemento y Distruzione della sintassi. Imaginazione senza fili. Parole in libertà, el futurismo concibe nuevos usos tipográficos como reflejo de la tumultuosa vida moderna. En un primer momento, esa nueva construcción tipográfica se dirigió al pasado para convertir la letra en una verbalización de la palabra y su fonética. Con ¿Zang Tumb Tuuum¿ (1914) se superaba la página tradicional por una visualidad en la que la tipográfica se muestra en toda su radicalidad expresiva. De ahí a las experiencias de literatos y artistas plásticos (Boccioni, Cangiullo, Buzzi y Carrá) que se publican en ¿Lacerba¿ y ¿L¿Italia futurista¿ hasta los tipos pintados en los que destacaron Carrà, Severini, Balla y el primer Depero. Ese lenguaje que hibrida palabra e imagen es asumido también por los literatos como Luciano Folgore, Arnaldo Ginna, Bruno Corra y, especialmente, Paolo Buzzi. A partir de 1915 Buzzi asume en sus libros el lenguaje cinematográfico, en el que definitivamente otorga a la palabra la sonoridad de la música. Corrado Govoni, por otra parte, construye sus poemas replanteando caligráficamente lo escrito. El artículo hace hincapié en las tres figuras determinantes para comprender la revolución tipográfica futurista. El primero, Francesco Cangiullo elaboró espectáculos de variedades tipográficos a partir del folklore napolitano en relevantes libros-objeto. Fortunato Depero exportó los experimentos tipográficos al campo publicitario siendo el puente con las experiencias de los años treinta en el norte de Italia. Pino Masnata destacará por un trabajo derivado de las prácticas caligramáticas.

La collaborazione tra Lucini e «Lacerba» è stata breve ma estremamente significativa, poiché la subitanea rottura lasciava presagire motivazioni profonde e radicate nelle distanze tra il poeta lariano e i "dogmi" futuristi.
Per rendersi conto con precisione delle ragioni dell'incontro-scontro sono stati esaminati i testi e gli epistolari dei protagonisti di quella stagione letteraria, compreso materiale manoscritto.
Il percorso ha evidenziato le profonde differenze ideologiche maturate tra Lucini e la redazione della rivista fiorentina, cresciute in maniera direttamente proporzionale all'avvicinamento della stessa all'ambiente del neonato Futurismo di Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

This paper investigates the relationship between Italian pittura metafisica and German Neue Sachlichkeit (an "history of influence," as Grosz and other German painters knew about De Chirico and Carrà around 1919; or a "similar paths", as German early objectivity is said to have evolved autonomously). Here I consider this relationship as, in fact, biunivocal, underlining stylistic exchanges on both sides of this international encounter. Elements of the argument are the reception of the exhibition "Das Junste Italien" (1921), Theodor Däubler's writings and early contributions by Franz Roh and their first formulation of a rising objectivity as an "Italienspielerei" (more or less ,an "Italian game"), up to Roh's Magischer Realismus (1925) and the important Italian function played in it and in the new realist instances of both German and Italian painting of the Twenties.

Inaugurata nell'aprile del 1922 nel nuovo Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Firenze, la “Fiorentina Primaverile” fu un'importante esposizione di arte italiana contemporanea, ideata e organizzata secondo un preciso progetto dallo scrittore e drammaturgo, Sem Benelli, allora presidente della locale Società delle Belle Arti. La “Fiorentina Primaverile” si svolse in un momento particolarmente stimolante per il capoluogo toscano, infatti essa fu la prima di una serie di rilevanti eventi artistici previsti per quell'anno, tra cui la grandiosa mostra ‒ ideata e curata da Ugo Ojetti, con il contributo di vari studiosi e specialisti ‒ dedicata alla riscoperta della pittura italiana del Seicento e del Settecento, a Palazzo Pitti, e subito dopo la “Prima Fiera Internazionale del Libro”.
Sebbene si tratti, in fondo, di un episodio isolato, la “Fiorentina Primaverile” fu per certi aspetti un unicum per Firenze, per la quantità e lo spessore degli artisti presentati. Infatti, tra gli oltre trecento artisti in mostra, in gran parte toscani, figuravano: Libero Andreotti, Arturo Dazzi, Evaristo Boncinelli, Adolfo Wildt, Primo Conti, Lorenzo Viani, Baccio Maria Bacci. Inoltre, vi erano le retrospettive dei pittori macchiaioli Silvestro Lega e Telemaco Signorini, a sancire il legame di continuità tra l'arte del Novecento, soprattutto quella dei toscani, e la pittura dell'Ottocento, e, infine, un'intera sala dedicata esclusivamente agli artisti appartenenti al gruppo della rivista «Valori Plastici», tra cui Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico Giorgio Morandi, Edita Walterowna Zur Muehlen, Arturo Martini, a cui si erano uniti per l'occasione anche Riccardo Francalancia, Amerigo Bartoli, Ugo Giannattasio, Armando Spadini, Cipriano Efisio Oppo, Carlo Socrate e Quirino Ruggeri.
Il lavoro di tesi mira alla ricostruzione storico-critica della “Fiorentina Primaverile”, dalla progettazione alla realizzazione, dalla conclusione alla ricezione, attraverso soprattutto lo studio del cospicuo materiale archivistico, finora inedito, relativo alla mostra. In questo modo si intende porre l'attenzione specificatamente sulla “Fiorentina Primaverile”, individuando quale fosse l'idea di mostra proposta da Benelli, e soprattutto quale idea di arte italiana contemporanea lo scrittore, insieme agli altri organizzatori, volesse offrire al pubblico in quell'esposizione.
Allo stesso modo si propone un nuovo punto di vista che si spera possa arricchire il dibattito sui primi anni Venti nel contesto toscano e, in prospettiva, in quello nazionale, uscendo così dalla lettura ormai storica, e fino ad ora predominante, della “Fiorentina Primaverile” come una sorta di pendant “accessorio”, dedicato all'arte contemporanea, della riscoperta d'interesse per l'arte di due secoli “dimenticati”, quali il Seicento e il Settecento, sancita dalla mostra di Palazzo Pitti.

In portraits of Italian futurist founder and poet Filippo-Tommaso Marinetti, the staging of the revelation of modern character meant factoring in many different, sometimes competing qualities, including his individual traits as well as broader visual principles that fit with avant-garde practices. In particular, an emphasis on his vocal ability would become a prominent feature of many of the most successful depictions. Portraits of Marinetti offer a valuable glimpse of some of the underlying tensions or outright contradictions related to this futurist aim, such as how this dominant, domineering, figure came to signify the movement at large and to overshadow the artistic achievements of others, as well as how early futurism's popular success in Italy played a role in hastening an authoritarian return to political and ideological traditions.

Attraverso una campionatura di dipinti, disegni e grafiche della prima metà del Novecento, la mostra offrì alcuni spunti di riflessione circa la rappresentazione del corpo/figura umana, che riflette la concezione antropologico-filosofica dell’uomo, del suo destino e del suo ruolo nei diversi orientamenti culturali e sociali. E’ un percorso tanto stilistico quanto concettuale. Vi si collocano diverse esperienze di “ritorno all’ordine”, ovvero di recupero della grande tradizione pittorica,  dei “primitivi” e del rinascimento, e anche della statuaria antica. L’arte si alimenta così di valori positivi, legati alla storia, alla tecnica e al “mestiere” nell’accezione più nobile, a un’iconografia arcaica ma profondamente “interiorizzata”; rinnovate esperienze danno nuova linfa a una realtà artistica che era stata anch’essa travolta dal conflitto mondiale e, al proprio interno, posta in crisi dal futurismo e dalle avanguardie. E’ un momento di disagio e di transizione, documentato da opere grafiche di Carrà e de Chirico.  Negli anni Venti – Trenta, si sviluppa in variegate tendenze un discorso di affermazione dei destini umani. In mostra, il nucleo storico del Novecento, costituitosi nel ’22 alla Galleria Pesaro di Milano, è rappresentato da un dipinto esemplare di ognuno dei suoi protagonisti: Bucci, Dudreville, il Funi del “realismo magico”, Malerba, Marussig, il “classicista” Oppi, il Sironi dei titanici “costruttori”. Accanto a questo nucleo centrale, si aggregano dipinti e disegni di autori come Borra,  il Reggiani “novecentista”, Marini, Rosai… L’interpretazione metafisica dell’uomo viene rappresentata da opere di Savinio e De Chirico; una lettura in chiave di privato intimismo emerge in un dipinto di de Pisis. Un ritratto a matita di Prampolini del ’32 riferisce sull’evolversi dell’esperienza futurista, mentre a un recupero delle avanguardie tende Severini, qui presente con una delle sue “odalische” dal colore sontuoso. L’ideale percorso per saggi si conclude, ai primi degli anni ’40, con l’opera di Guidi, in cui il processo di depurazione formale esalta quella radice umanistica che, con molteplici varianti e individuali valori, si rinviene alla base della cultura del Novecento.

The magazine “Valori Plastici”, published in Rome between 1918 and 1922, directed by Mario Broglio, had a decisive role in the European artistic context after the IWW. It proposed the works of an innovative group of Italian artists like Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, Alberto Savinio, Arturo Martini and Edita Broglio, who sustained to rediscover the roots of their own artistic languages in the Italian Medieval and Renaissance tradition. The magazine was a remarkable medium for the international spread of the metaphysical painting, that took place when the main characters outdistanced from that language favoring a more naturalistic one. In fact, “Valori Plastici” suggested the metaphysical painting as an innovative language of avant-garde but also as a language that followed the Italian artistic tradition.
The proposal highlights this ambiguous interpretation of metaphysical painting given by “Valori Plastici”. Analyzing the exhibition activity of “Valori Plastici”, specifically the tour in Germany in 1921, and the participation at the Fiorentina Primaverile in Florence in 1922, it will be reconstructed how Broglio intended to present the metaphysical painting during the exhibits of “Valori Plastici”, and if it was a stragetic move to propose that language to the public in different ways.

In 1925, thanks to a scholarship from the Royal College of Art, London, the young Henry Moore found himself travelling in Europe over six months. This travel included a stop in Italy - intended as a possibility for the young artist to visit the principal museums, monuments, and galleries of Europe, and to develop a direct knowledge of the Old Masters. Italy was identified as the principal place for Classicism and Renaissance art models, which instilled in Moore some initial feelings of reluctance. He was concerned to overcome those academic artistic models which had accompanied his art school instruction. Moreover, in those years, the young artist was particularly interested in non-European primitive sculpture, most of all those of Egypt, Mexico and Africa, displayed in the British Museum and reflected in contemporary works by sculptors such as Jacob Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.
After a brief stay in Paris, Moore's trip continued to Italy, stopping in Florence, Siena, Pisa, Rome, Assisi, Ravenna, Padua and Venice. In a completely unexpected manner, the young sculptor was deeply touched by the painting of the Italian Masters of the Trecento and Quattrocento like Giotto, Masaccio, Giovanni Bellini, and Andrea Mantegna. In their work Moore admired the expressiveness and the plastic synthesis that was sculpture-like, as can be seen in several drawings and notes made by Moore at the time. The lessons learnt by the sculptor became a fundamental part of his research and artistic development. In the 1940s, Moore looked to mix the “Mediterranean Classicism” learnt in Italy, with the elementary and primitive art he admired. This led to a new and fertile phase that characterized his work in the post-war period.
This paper aims to highlight the trip to Italy realized by Moore in 1925, in order to understand better, by analyzing the notes and designs of the artist at that time, which artworks he saw and studied as well as why and how they touched and influenced him and his artistic path. Moreover it intends to trace a relationship, by identifying similarities and differences, between Moore's interest for the Trecento and Quattrocento Italian artists, and the trend for rediscovering that artistic period that also characterized the works of the artists of the roman magazine “Valori Plastici” (1918-1922), such as Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, and Arturo Martini.

L’articolo si propone di mettere in rilievo ciò che accomuna gli scritti saggistici di Bontempelli sulle arti visive, la cui materia è di natura teorica o critica applicata, alle sue esperienze narrative, traducendosi nella tendenza poetica del realismo magico. Il tessuto connettivo è rappresentato più direttamente dai casi in cui gli espedienti compositivi ed espressivi messi in atto dall’autore si profilano sulla base delle tendenze trasfigurative analoghe della pittura italiana quattrocentesca, nonché in concomitanza con una visuale propria dell’arte moderna di stampo metafisico (De Chirico, Carrà, Martini). Sull’esempio del libro "Appassionata incompetenza", in cui la riflessione estetica bontempelliana attiene direttamente all’ambito della figuratività, si cerca inoltre in particolare di esplorare la motivazione letteraria delle osservazioni, nonché le modalità di trattazione dell'elemento irriducibilmente pittorico o scultoreo. Si nota altresì la poeticizzazione della sostanza visiva, talvolta impregnata di concezioni caratterizzanti la prosa d'arte.

This paper is focused on literary research of philological nature, scientifically grounded, that is at the same time multidisciplinarily validated from a theoretical standpoint and hence directly applicable to analogous artistic realms, such as visual arts, music, architecture, theater, spectacle, multimediality. Through close interpretative methodological approach, the present paper furnishes a variety of examples among the corpus of literary texts written by artists of diversified profiles in modern Italian cultural panorama, ranging across the spectrum of literary genres in the broadest sense, in a vast array of forms, from whence is made possible and deduced the acquisition of critical and aesthetic notions indispensable for such purpose. This presentation therefore focalizes propulsive cultural influences of artists’ books and illustrations, as well as musical arrangements of literary works, and correlational philosophical knowledge if invested in such interdisciplinary sense, from which can be derived that these texts possess analogous literary attributes, and thereby present thematic topoi and intersections, or conforming stylistic features. Contemporary works of art are thus envisaged if having literary resonances, and analyzed accordingly from previously unexplored angolations, while always tackling Italianistic topics in art matters, whether their provenance is iconographic, illustrational, architectonic or musical. Likewise, it is elaborated how to pursue research modes that are particularly fertile for bringing to light previously unpublished writings, as well as how to present these cognitions to the general public by approaching scientific results. The presentation is also attentive to various possibilites of application of these insights in a multitude of professional fields.

It presented the works of an innovative group of Italian artists including Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, Alberto Savinio, Arturo Martini and Edita Walterowna von Zur Muehlen, who worked to rediscover the roots of their own artistic languages in the Italian Medieval and Renaissance traditions. The magazine was a remarkable medium for the international spread of Metaphysical painting, that took place when the artists more connected to this style outdistanced themselves from it in favor of a more naturalistic pictorial language.
