Tendo como referencial curricular base o Perfil dos Alunos à Saída da Escolaridade Obrigatória, a coleção de dossiês pedagógicos do PNC destina-se a apoiar o trabalho dos docentes na formação de públicos escolares para a área do cinema, permitindo-lhes adquirir os instrumentos básicos de compreensão de obras cinematográficas e audiovisuais, possibilitando a criação do hábito de ver cinema ao longo da vida, e valorizando o cinema enquanto arte junto das comunidades educativas.

Chaplin’in yarattığı efsane karakter Şarlo, yaşadığımız modern
dünyayı resmederken referans gösterilen başlıca figürlerden biri
olmasına karşın, o modern dünyalı biri değildir. Şarlo, tüm filmlerde
görebileceğimiz gibi hem modern insanlar hem de modern nesneler
tarafından dışlanmaktadır; o, bu modern dünyaya yabancıdır. Tam da
Şarlo’nun yaşadığımız dünyaya olan bu yabancılığı onu bir mit haline
getirir. Modern dünyaya kapitalizmin getirdiği temel motiflerinden
olan yabancılaşma Şarlo’nun varlık zeminidir ve biz bu zeminde
kendimizi görürüz. Bu bağlamda “kültürün her kesimince etraflı bir
şekilde bilinen” Şarlo, toplumun kimi değerlerini “simgelediğinden” Ian
Watt’ın tanımını referans alırsak tam bir mit halini alır.
Chaplin önce çektiği onlarca kısa filmle bu mit evrenini yaratmış,
daha sonra önceliği, Şarlo aracılığıyla, güncel politik meselelere
müdahalelerde bulunmaya vermiştir. Modern Zamanlar da sanayii
toplumunu ve bu toplumda işçilerin konumu ele alan Chaplin, Büyük
Diktatör filmiyle ise faşizme karşı duruş sergiler.
1930’lu yıllarda yaşam bulan bir diğer mit, Hitler mitidir. Hitler,
ideolojisiyle birlikte şahsi etkisini de yarattığı mitle beslemeye çalışır.
Devasa bir propaganda aygıtı bu iş için kullanılır. Kendisini doğal bir
lider olarak kabul ettirmesinin koşulu bir yanıyla onun mitsel kişiliğinin
gücüne bağlıdır. Ancak Bazin’in ifadesiyle Hitler mitini oluştururken

tarihsel bir hata yapmış ve Şarlo’nun bıyığını kullanmıştır.
Chaplin, kendi dünya görüşünün yol göstericiliğinde Hitler’in bu
eylemini bir fırsat olarak alır ve Büyük Diktatör filminde kendi evreninde
Hitler’i Hinkel olarak hiçleştirir. Bu evrende kendisiyle kalan (ünlü
küreyle dans sahnesi) Hinkel gülünç duruma düşerken, diğer diktatörle
mücadelesinde de büyüklük gayreti (koltuk sahnesi) yani bir anlamda
miti içerisinde boğulduğuna şahit oluruz.
Özetle, bu çalışmada öncelikle Chaplin’in A Day’s Pleasure, One A.M.,
Şehir Işıkları gibi filmleri üzerinden Şarlo’nun yabancılaşma teması
üzerinden nasıl modern bir mit olarak belirdiğini ele alacağım. Bu
analizde referans olarak Marx’ın olduğu kadar Lukacs’ın ve Ian Watt’ın
çalışmalarından da yararlanacağım. Ardından Bazin ve Rohmer’in
çalışmalarının yol göstericiliğinde Chaplin’in mitsel evrende, faşizme
karşı mücadelesini betimleyeceğim. Son olarak bu bağlamda,
Şarlo evreninin modern dönemindeki öneminin, Chaplin’in güncel
politikalara karşı getirdiği eleştirilere olanak sağlamasında teyit
edildiğine işaret edeceğim.

This article seeks to explore the aesthetics of translation through analysis of Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, in which the Tramp sings a song that can be analysed as a performance of the translation of the sound of silence. While defining silence as effects of silence, and clarifying the relation between performance and translation, the article places itself within a paradigm of heterodox translation, namely a practice of translation that while being non-metaphorical, expands the realm of translation in its relation to sound and multilingualism. The Tramp’s song is analysed in relation to its meaning for Modern Times and as carrying more meaning than critics usually read. Read from the perspective of translation studies and of US experimental poetry, the song is seen as a crucial sequence for translation at large, as an example of what the article calls ‘trampslation’ or, that is, a motley of translations such as homophonic or intersemiotic translations that destabilize our conceptions of translation and languages. Thus, the article seeks to use what Lawrence Venuti defines as heuristic translation and demonstrate that translation is a strong interpretive tool.

This chapter explores how duality plays out within and across Chaplin’s screen comedy. As a means identifying what is specific about Chaplin’s handling of duality, I contrast the use of this trope within Chaplin’s films with how it operates within the films of other Hollywood comedians such as Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, Jerry Lewis, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, and Jim Carrey. As I suggest, duality is a recurring technique within comedian comedy, but the various performers deploy and interpret in very different ways. For Kaye and Lewis, for example, duality frequently has a psychological rationale, while Chaplin persistently uses it to address and expose social inequality. I map out the diverse senses in which the concept of duality can be seen to apply to Chaplin’s work and image, arguing that within the films it points towards the way his comic character is identified as a figure who straddles social boundaries (exemplified most tellingly, perhaps, in the ending of The Pilgrim). I connect this to broader operations of comedian comedy, where the comedian figure is frequently a conduit for channelling otherness. I am not proposing that the later comedians are explicitly influenced by Chaplin in this respect, as I suggest that this function is a foundational principle of performer-centred comedy. In The Art of Charlie Chaplin, John Kimber goes so far as to proclaim “compulsive doubleness” as “the most important single clue to his (ie. the Charlie figure’s) spirit”. Kimber identifies Chaplin’s duality as an inheritance of the fool tradition, and I draw upon critical work on the fool and the carnivalesque to scrutinize the manifestations and significance of duality. Following on from Kimber, I explore the various ways in which duality informs Chaplin’s films, focussing in particular on Police and The Pilgrom – but I will also suggest how it characterises the relations between director and performer, performer and role, and the contradictions within Chaplin’s public image.

Este trabajo presenta algunas conclusiones provisorias de una investigación más amplia todavía en curso, cuyo tema es la relación entre la poesía surrealista y el cine mudo de las primeras décadas del siglo veinte. El estudio en el que se enmarca comprende desde poemas de Louis Aragon y Phillipe Soupault, escritos de André Breton, cartas de Jacques Vaché y crónicas de Robert Desnos para los periódicos Paris-Journal, Journal Littéraire y Le Soir hasta películas como Un chien andalou (1929) de Luis Buñuel y Salvador Dalí. En las páginas siguientes, me limitaré a reseñar dos ensayos sobre cine del joven Aragon, publicados entre 1918 y 1919 en el semanario Le Film, que animaba Louis Delluc, pionero de la crítica cinematográfica francesa y él mismo “cinéaste”, según el neologismo de su invención. Mi propósito es ilustrar la tesis que en estos ensayos vincula las películas de Charles Chaplin con el surgimiento de una estética del cine, independiente de las artes tradicionales, a través de la traducción y el comentario de un conjunto de textos pertenecientes a la prehistoria del surrealismo: por un lado, un “poema cinematográfico” de Soupault y otros poemas de Aragon sobre Charlot y, por el otro, tres “críticas sintéticas” de cortometrajes escritos, dirigidos y protagonizados por Chaplin, que Soupault dio a conocer en la sección “Les Spectacles” de la revista Littérature en 1919, y un poema en prosa de Paul Éluard aparecido en una pequeña publicación dadaísta en 1920.

Il lavoro ricostruisce la presenza di due figure "contigue" nell'immaginario dell'avanguardia ceca degli anni '20-'30, incarnazione dell'idea stessa di "poesia", come teorizzata da Karel Teige nel manifesto del Poetismo del 1924: l'esploratore polare Roald Amundsen e Charlie Chaplin. Di quest'ultimo in particolare viene ricostruito il percorso che, dalla prima scoperta in ambito franco-tedesco (Cendrars e Léger, Ivan Goll, Aragon…) e attraverso la cassa di risonanza di Erenburg (Eppur si muove!, 1922), lo porterà a diventare figura privilegiata anche nell'avanguardia sovietica (Majakovskij, Rodčenko e Stepanova…). L'analisi termatica indaga soprattutto il ritorno dei due personaggi nei versi e nei cinescenari di figure importanti dell'avanguardismo ceco quali il teorico K. Teige, i poeti V. Nezval, K. Biebl, F. Halas e J. Seifert e il prosatore V. Vančura, come anche negli spazi della grafica del libro, all'epoca determinanti nella costruzione di tale immaginario.
