The Greek community in Toronto is at a crossroads, both as an organization and as an ethnic group. The Greek Community of Toronto Inc. is embroiled in another financial crisis and is on the verge of insolvency. Yet, this latest crisis is a symptom of a much older disease: the unwillingness to understand a transformation in an ethnic Greek Canadian consciousness/ identity alongside the social hold of not separating religion from culture and community politics. If the community at large does not accept the changing Greek Canadian consciousness—indeed, embrace it— and separate religion from community politics, the situation will only polarize the community even more […] Ethnic communities do not necessarily need a church to be in a position of higher authority to define themselves as a public cultural institution.

Draught horses and their material requirements were a key aspect of the material culture adopted by Ukrainian settlers in their transition from the subsistence peasant farming of western Ukraine to the large-scale commercial farming of western Canada. The role of draught animals, generally, and draught horses, specifically, in the peasant economy of nineteenth-century Ukraine was limited and had little effect on the structural and material folk traditions of the Ukrainian peasantry. Ukrainian homesteaders usually acquired and developed the skills pertaining to the purchase, housing, care and use of draught animals, especially in large numbers, in Canada. They also adjusted to a new variety of material accoutrements associated with the use and care of horses in Canada, although they had used similar items of different quality in Ukraine. Abstract: While the Union of Brest-Litovsk, 1596, created the contemporary Ukrainian Catholic Church, it also had the unfortunate consequence of the'Latinization'of its Eastern Christian moral theology. More recently, however, the Catholic Church, through the Second Vatican Council and the writings of Pope John Paul II, has presented the opportunity to reverse this trend. This article argues that the foundation of an authentic Eastern moral theology for the Ukrainian Catholic Church is found in the writings of Metropolitan Andrei ...

The early Ukrainian migration to Canada, from 1891 on, settled first on the prairies, a landless people brought to a peopleless land. Others came to work in the industries of Welland, the paper mills of Thorold, and on the construction of the new Welland canal. Early missionary attempts by the existing churches of the area competed with and gave way to the traditions of the old land.
