Chuvashia

В статье рассматриваются события, связанные с основанием Свияжска и началом присоединения Чувашии к Московскому государству летом 1551 г. Придерживаясь точки зрения о насильственном включении чувашских земель в состав России, автор тем не менее признает благотворное влияние этого события на становление чувашской нации.

Данная работа описывает ситуацию государственных языков в общественном пространстве г. Чебоксары. Она вписывается в рамки исследования по «лингвистическому ландшафту». В то же время, она исследует и выполнение Закона Чувашской Республики «О языках в Чувашской Республике» в данной области. Анализировано использование языков в зданиях, парках, надписях с названиями улиц, на дорожных знаках и информационных плакатах, в общественном транспорте, на общественных мероприятиях, праздниках и в социальной рекламе.

Özet
Kimliği belirleyen pek çok unsur bulunmaktadır. Bu unsurlardan biri de dindir. Çarlık Rusyası İdil-Ural bölgesinde yaşayan Türk topluluklarını egemenliği altına aldıktan sonra onlara karşı çeşitli eritme politikaları uygulamıştır. Ekonomi ve eğitimle ilgili bu uygulamalar arasında dini yaptırımlar da yer almıştır. Bu bağlamda bölgedeki Tatar ve Çuvaş gibi toplulukların eritilmesinde Hıristiyanlaştırma faaliyetlerine başvurulmuştur. Hıristiyanlık, Ruslaştırmanın bir aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Makalede, İdil-Ural bölgesinde Çuvaşlar ve Tatarlar örneğinde, din-kimlik ilişkisi ele alınmıştır.

Abstract
One's identity is shaped by many factors including religion. After governing over the Turkic communities in the Volga-Ural region, The Tsardom of Russia has carried out variety of policies to assimilate them. These policies were not only implemented in economic and educational area but also in religious constraints. In this context, in order to assimilate them, Volga-Ural Tatar and Chuvash communities were subjected to Christianization. Christianity hes been used as a means of Russification. This article deals with the relationship between religion and identity with special reference to Volga-Ural Tatar and Chuvash communities.

Using a simplified version of Labov's classical methodology, this work presents an analysis of 716 requests for stops in minibus taxis in Shupashkar. The structure of utterances and their lexical composition are studied depending on the sex and age of the addresser. The results show little variation in the structure, which consists of three elements: a place expression, a verb and a form of politeness. Each of these parts has practically no more than 2 or 3 possibilities. Only the form of politeness differs between the sexes and generations, both in its presence or absence, and in the choice of the expression. Informal address to the driver as "ty" is used only by men without distinctions by age groups.

Работа представляет анализ 716 записей просьб об остановках в маршрутных такси г. Чебоксары с использованием упрощенного варианта классической методологии У. Лабова. Изучены структура высказываний и их лексический состав в зависимости от пола и возраста пассажиров. Результаты показывают небольшую вариативность в структуре, состоящей из трех элементов: места, глагола и формы вежливости. Каждая из этих частей имеет практически не более 2-3 вариантов. Только форма вежливости представляет различия между полами и поколениями как в ее присутствии или отсутствии, так и в выборе выражения. Обращение к водителю на «ты» используется лишь мужчинами без различий по возрастным группам.

This article focuses on theoretical and methodological foundations of the quantitative study of the city linguistic landscape in Russia. It addresses the problems of getting a representative sample and codifying the signs and languages. The presented method allows a comprehensive analysis of a large amount of linguistic data.

Данная статья посвящена теоретико-методологическим основам изучения лингвистического ландшафта российских городов количественными методами. В ней рассматривается проблемы репрезентативной выборки и кодификация знаков, сложности, вызванные языковой классификацией. Представленный метод позволяет проводить разносторонний анализ большого объем языковых данных.

The article discusses the situation of Udmurt and Chuvash in education on the basis of legal texts, statistical data, interviews to parents, teachers and school officials and schoolchildren pooling. Although Udmurt and Chuvash are being taught as a subject in many schools where the language of instruction is Russian, the results are not satisfying. This problem, being psychological in its nature, lies in attitudes prevalent in society and in the schools. The minority languages are practiced in a small number of situations, and a small number of students really care about elaboration of their own ways of belonging, because they experience that the native language is not prestigious. At the same time, to use some words and to know some traditions is respectful, especially when someone visits abroad and is welcomed much better as a representative of a minority than as a Russian. Данная статья представляет результаты еще не завершенной работы Чувашского государственного института гуманитарных наук по изучению положения чувашского языка в Чувашской Республике, особенно в ее крупнейших населенных пунктах. Анализируются результаты опроса 1900 школьников старших классов практически всех крупных и средних населенных пунктов Чувашской Республики. Исследование ориентировано, прежде всего, на четыре аспекта: владение чувашским языком, межпоколенная передача языка, использование чувашского языка и отношение к нему. Изучается, какие факторы наиболее сильно влияют на языковой сдвиг, и до какой степени этот процесс распространяется в средних населенных пунктах Чувашии. Данная информация может помочь в создании эффективной языковой политики, нацеленной на развитие чувашского и других языков Чувашии при условии сохранения благоприятных межэтнических отношений в республике

The article presents the results of a survey among 913 school students grades 7‒11 in the Kaşal/Komsomol’skoe and Patăryel/Batyrevo districts of Chuvashia. It focuses on the oral language skills of ethnic Chuvashes and Tatars in their respective national languages, analysing the impact of different socio-economic, demographic and geographic factors. The results show significant differences in language knowledge between children depending on the parental educational level. Significant differences have been also found between Tatars and Chuvashes, and among Chuvashes ‒ between the residents of the district centres and other settlements. Language shift among Chuvashes in the Kaşal/Komsomol’skoe district is more pronounced.

На основе опроса 913 школьников 7‒11 классов Комсомольского и Батыревского районов Чувашской Республики изучен уровень устного владения языком своей национальности среди чувашских и татарских учащихся. Проанализировано влияние разных социально-экономических, демографических и географических факторов. Результаты показывают значительные различия во владении языком между детьми в зависимости от уровня образования родителей. Выявлена разница между татарами и чувашами, и среди чувашей — между жителями районных центров и других населённых пунктов. Языковой сдвиг среди чувашей в Комсомольском районе более выражен.

Настоящая работа представляет результаты исследования по ситуации государственных языков в общественном пространстве города Чебоксары. Исследование вписывается в рамки работ по «лингвистическому ландшафту». Для этой цели сделано тщательное наблюдение использования языков в общественных местах города. Анализировалось использование языков в зданиях, парках, надписях с названиями улиц, на дорожных знаках и информационных плакатах, в общественном транспорте, на общественных мероприятиях, праздниках и в социальной рекламе.

Kendileri hakkında ülkemizde çalışılmamış ve geniş malzeme bulunmayan,
tarihleri kadar dini inanışları da iyi bilinmeyen Türk topluluklarından biri
Çuvaşlardır. Çuvaşların geleneksel inanışlarına Mecusilik, Yahudilik, Hıristiyanlık ve İslam'ın etkide bulunduğu çeşitli araştırmacılar tarafından ileri sürülmüştür. Ancak her araştırmacı kendi görüşlerini destekleyen unsurları öne çıkarmış, çoğu zaman sağlıklı değerlendirmeler yapılamamıştır.

Дано описание численности и распределения национальностей и языков в городах Чувашии. Исследование базируется на соцопросах ЧГИГН с 2006 по 2012 гг., включая анкетирование, проведенное автором, в школах райцентров Северной Чувашии. Обсуждаются такие вопросы как бинациональность граждан, их эмоциональная связь с Россией и Чувашией, понятие «родной язык» и корреляции национальностей и владения чувашского языка с социально-экономическими показателями.

Саккун тăрăх икĕ патшалăх чĕлхипе пĕр тан усă курмалла пулин те патшалăх влаçĕн органĕсем те, халăха йăла енчен тивĕçтерекен организацисем те чăваш чĕлхипе сахал усă курнă пирки, хуласенче чăваш чĕлхи вĕренӳ чĕлхи пулакан пĕр ача сачĕ е шкул та çукки пирки, чăваш чĕлхине усă курмалли сферăна анлăлатмалли майсем шырамалли пирки сăмах хускатнă.

In the summer of 2013 an expedition led by the author of this article conducted field research in the rural settlement Chugunaevo Lower Tavda district of the Tyumen region. Historical information about the origin of the actual village Chugunaevo us is not revealed yet. On national composition Chugunaevo rural settlement is mixed - there live Russian, Tatars, Chuvash, Kryashens. Russian village are Big and Small Zamorozovka Siberian Tatar - yurt Iska mixed - Chugunaevo village. It should also be noted that in Chugunaevo were resettled residents of three settlements that have disappeared as a result of consolidation of the villages in the late 1960s: Tatar - Elmar (Small Yurts), Russian - Cigarca and village Kryashens - Baltan.

Старообрядчество на территории Чувашии появилось во второй половине XVII в., однако до настоящего времени места компактного проживания старообрядцев в республике не попадали в поле зрения исследователей, занимающихся собиранием старинных рукописей и книг. По нашему мнению, наличие более чем трехвековой старообрядческой традиции, а также материалы экспедиции свидетельствуют о том, что археографическое исследование мест компактного проживания староверов на территории Чувашской Республики должно быть продолжено. Археографические поездки 2003 г. вполне могут стать началом комплексного исследования старообрядческой культуры в Чувашской Республике, тем более что имеются научные кадры, заинтересованные в таком исследовании.
Old Believers in the territory of Chuvashia appeared in the second half of the 17th century, but until now the places of compact residence of Old Believers in the republic did not come into the view of researchers engaged in collecting ancient manuscripts and books. In our opinion, the presence of more than three centuries of Old Believers tradition, as well as the materials of the expedition, indicate that the archaeographic study of the places of compact residence of Old Believers in the territory of the Chuvash Republic should be continued. The archaeographic trips of 2003 may well become the beginning of a comprehensive study of the Old Believers culture in the Chuvash Republic, especially since there are scientific personnel interested in such a study.

In this thesis the situation considering national awareness of the Chuvash people is described. The central question is how awareness of the Chuvash people can be described and which factors are/were crucial in its formation? In order to analyze the problem in greater depth, the historical background of the region and the Chuvash people since the 10th century till post-communist period is studied in the first chapter. Additionally, socio-political awareness of the national elite and its development was studied for a broader understanding of the topic. Particular attention is paid to Ivan Iakovlevich Iakovlev, the pedagogical activist, nationalist, founder of the Chuvash alphabet and first Chuvash national schools. This person played an important role in the development of the national awareness among the Chuvash as his activities contributed to formation of national intelligentsia and thereby to establishment of the Chuvash statehood. The situation considering national awareness among the Chuvash in modern Russia is analyzed in the second chapter. Contradictions in evaluation of the situation are explained there: was it a period of national awakening or rather of “national nihilism”, in other words underestimation of own ethnic group, lack of confidence in the prospects of their development and orientation on other nation. In the third chapter, the results of interviews and current situation are described. Possible economic, political and socio-cultural reasons for the current situation considering national awareness among the Chuvash are discussed there too.

Статья посвящена феномену православного церковного самиздата во второй половине XX столетия. Под православным самиздатом в данной работе понимается комплекс текстов, растиражированных кустарным способом и распространявшихся в так называемой прицерковной среде без санкции церковных или светских властей. В условиях советской действительности церковная среда представляла собой глубокую периферию общественной жизни и формировалась из маргиналов, вытолкнутых советской властью на социальную обочину. Специфическое положение церковных людей в СССР определяло репертуар текстов самиздата, их идеологическую направленность. Источниковую базу для данной статьи составила большая библиотека церковного самиздата, оставшаяся после смерти Елизаветы Федоровны Захаровой, активной прихожанки Введенского кафедрального собора в Чебоксарах, типичной представительницы прицерковного круга. В статье дан обзор жанров произведений, хранившихся в качестве самиздата в библиотеке Захаровой: богослужебные тексты, кустарные копии дореволюционных изданий, духовные стихи, тематические сборники, произведения фольклора, апологетическая литература, эсхатологические и конспирологические тексты и др. Одной из особенностей бытования православного самиздата в Чувашии было то, что многие тексты циркулировали в переводах на чувашский язык. К числу особенностей чебоксарского самиздата можно отнести тиражирование прозаического перевода поэм Джона Мильтона «Потерянный рай» и «Возвращенный рай». Церковный самиздат выполнял ряд важных функций в прицерковной среде: решал проблему спроса на богослужебную и вероучительную литературу в условиях дефицита, транслировал неподцензурные тексты, сплачивал церковных людей и мог быть источником дополнительного заработка. В целом церковный самиздат был важной составляющей культуры «прицерковного круга» в советское время. При цитировании неопубликованных источников сохраняются особенности орфографии и пунктуации оригинала.

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of Orthodox church samizdat in the second half of the 20 th  century. The term Orthodox samizdat used in this article refers to a set of texts reproduced in an artisanal way and distributed in church goers circle without the sanction of the church or secular authorities. In the conditions of Soviet reality, the church circles were a deep periphery of public life and was formed from the marginalized or those pushed out by the Soviet authori - ties  to  the  social  margins.  The  specific  position  of  church  people  in  the  USSR  determined  the  repertoire  of  samizdat  texts  and  their  ideological  orientation.  The  source  base  for  this  article  was  formed  by  a  large  library  of  church  samizdat  left  after  the  death  of  Elizabeth  Feodorovna  Zakharova, an active parishioner of the Vvedensky Cathedral in Cheboksary. Zakharova was a typical representative of the church goers. The article reviews the genres of works that were avail
- able  as  the  samizdat  in  Zakharova’s  library:  liturgical  texts,  artisan  copies  of  pre-revolutionary  publications, spiritual verses, thematic collections, folklore, apologetic literature, eschatological and  conspiralogical texts, etc. One of the peculiarities of the existence of Orthodox samizdat in Chuvashia  was  that  many  texts  circulated  in  translations  into  the  Chuvash  language.  Among  the features of Cheboksary samizdat is the replication of the prosaic translation of John Milton’s poems “Paradise Lost” and “Paradise Regained”. Church samizdat performed a number of im - portant functions in church circles: it solved the problem of demand for liturgical and doctrinal literature  in  deficit  conditions,  shared  uncensored  texts,  rallied  church  people  and  could  be  a  source of additional income. In general, church samizdat was an important part of the culture of the church circle during the Soviet era. The spelling and punctuation features of the original
unpublished sources are preserved in the article when cited.

The ethnolinguistic situation in rural areas of the Chuvash Republic (according to a sociolinguistic survey among schoolchildren of the Murkaş/Morgauši and Elĕk/Alikovo districts)

This article presents results of a sociolinguistic survey among 1045 secondary school students in two rural districts of Chuvashia and interviews with principals and teachers in 23 village schools. It focuses on three aspects: knowledge of Chuvash, language maintenance and shift, and language use. The results show a recent serious decline of inter-generational language transmission in the larger towns. Outside them, language shift is linked with the proximity of the capital city. Although Chuvash is still the language overwhelmingly used with parents, its use is decreasing between peers and outside the family, especially in the areas closer to the capital. Language shift is found to be significantly sharper among people with higher education. Differences in language transmission strategies among mothers and fathers are discussed. Primary school is also found to quickly shift from Chuvash to Russian as a result of language policies, not of language shift in families. A significant increase of Russian in family use in the next years is predicted.

Origins of influences on Chuvash researchers in humanities: a statistical analysis of articles in the Journal of the Chuvash University

The article presents the results of comparing different bibliometric indicators of the Journal of the Chuvash University and several Catalan journals in the sphere of humanities: length, number of references, origin of the authors, language of the articles, origin of the references, their languages and age. Contributors to the Chuvash journal are often from other regions of Russia, but not from abroad. References in it are overwhelmingly from Russia, especially from Moscow and Saint Petersburg publications, but seldom from Chuvashia itself or from abroad. Foreign influences are received by means of translations to the dominant (Russian) language or in English, but very seldom through other languages, which is much less the case in Catalonia. References tend to be older than in Catalan journals. The results may explain the differences in the dominant ideas about the value of bilingualism and the desirable range of uses for minority languages among Chuvash researchers in humanities and the Chuvash society compared with regions with positive language policies in other European countries.

Neste artigo descríbese a situación actual do chuvaso, especialmente nas cidades de Chuvasia. Despois dunha presentación de Chuvasia e da súa historia recente, repásase a súa política lingüística, particularmente no marco educativo. Analízanse as distintas causas que contribúen á adopción e perpetuación de opcións claramente inefectivas. Finalmente, resúmense os resultados dun traballo en curso que reflicte os resultados da política lingüística e educativa en Chuvasia.

Title: Urban population attitudes in the Chuvash Republic to the use of the official languages (according to a sociolinguistic survey among upper-secondary school students)

This article presents the results of a sociolinguistic survey among 589 urban upper-secondary school students in Chuvashia. It focuses on four aspects: knowledge of Chuvash, language maintenance and shift, language uses, and language attitudes. The results show a sharp decline of inter-generational language transmission, and the lack of Chuvash use outside the family circle. Language transmission is somewhat better maintained in lower socio-economical strata
and among people with lower levels of education. Russian-medium schooling plays an important role in both the decrease of Chuvash use at home, and the fixation of bad habits and negative stereotypes towards the language. In addition, attitudes and stereotypes are found to strongly correlate with the level of language knowledge.

В статье рассматриваются результаты социолингвистического опроса 589 старшеклассников, учащихся городов Чувашии. Рассматриваются пять аспектов: межпоколенческая преемственность национальностей, владение чувашским языком, языковая преемственность в семьях, использование чувашского языка и, главным образом, отношение к нему, в частности к его общественному использованию. Результаты показывают большой спад преемственности языка между поколениями и отсутствие использования чувашского языка вне семьи. Рассматриваются факторы, влияющие на эту ситуацию, среди прочего, и школьное образование. По отношению к языкам результаты показывают малый интерес городской молодёжи к изменению общественного использования государственных языков, и в то же время показывают возможность работать в этом направлении при определённых условиях.

This paper presents the results of 12 semi-structured interviews with young Chuvash families about the language parents use with children. Parents are not opposed to speak Chuvash, but this issue has a very low priority. The school language has a heavy impact on the election of the family language, as well as negative stereotypes on early bilingualism.
