A new higher-order spectral element (SE) is developed for wave propagation analysis of a functionally graded material (FGM) beam in the presence of thermal and mechanical loading. The element is based on first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and takes into account the depthwise contraction due to Poisson’s ratio. A new method of element formulation is employed, which is the most general one and devoid of all previous cumbersome wavenumber and wave amplitude computation. The beam can be subjected to temperature variation in depth direction. This variation is found by solving the one-dimensional heat conduction equation uncoupled from the elasticity equation. The effect of the computed temperature field is subsequently superimposed on the mechanical loading in the form of an equivalent nodal load. Numerical examples are directed towards highlighting the effect of the Poisson’s contraction on the structural response and stress wave. The spectrum and the dispersion relation are studied in detail. The stress field generated by the element and its difference from the FSDT stress field is outlined. The response of an FGM beam to thermo-mechanical loading is analysed and the effect of thermal loading on the overall response is elicited.

ABSTRACT:  The effects of temperature (−1, 4, and 10 °C), brine concentration (12% and 25% NaCl), injection volumes, and needle densities were investigated on fillet weight gain (%), salt content (%), fillet contraction (%), and muscle gaping in pre rigor brine-injected fillets of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Increased brine concentration (12% to 25%) significantly increased the initial (< 5 min after injection) and final contraction (24 h after injection) of pre rigor fillets. Increased brine concentration significantly reduced weight gain and increased salt content but had no significant effect on muscle gaping. The temperatures tested did not significantly affect weight gain, fillet contraction, or gaping score. Significant regressions (P < 0.01) between the injection volume and weight gain (range: 2.5% to 15.5%) and salt content (range: 1.7% to 6.5%) were observed for injections of pre rigor fillets. Double injections significantly increased the weight gain and salt content compared to single injections. Initial fillet contraction measured 30 min after brine injection increased significantly (P < 0.01) with increasing brine injection volume but no significant difference in the fillet contraction was observed 12 h after brine injection (range: 7.9% to 8.9%). Brine-injected post rigor control fillets obtained higher weight gain, higher salt content, more muscle gaping, and significantly lower fillet contraction compared to the pre rigor injected fillets.Injection-salting is an applicable technology as a means to obtain satisfactory salt contents and homogenously distribute the salt into the muscle of pre rigor fillets of Atlantic salmon before further processing steps such as drying and smoking.

Background and objective: Resistance training is a potential stimulus to increase muscle protein synthesis and the time under tension of muscle is one of the variables of strength training that contributes to its adaptation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of resistance training with slow and fast speeds on some anabolic and catabolic hormones in healthy young women.

Surface contraction waves (SCWs) in oocytes and embryos lead to large-scale shape changes coupled to cell cycle transitions and are spatially coordinated with the cell axis. Here, we show that SCWs in the starfish oocyte are generated by a traveling band of myosin II-driven cortical contractility. At the front of the band, contractility is activated by removal of cdk1 inhibition of the RhoA/RhoA kinase/myosin II signaling module, while at the rear, contractility is switched off by negative feedback originating downstream of RhoA kinase. The SCW's directionality and speed are controlled by a spatiotemporal gradient of cdk1-cyclinB. This gradient is formed by the release of cdk1-cyclinB from the asymmetrically located nucleus, and progressive degradation of cyclinB. By combining quantitative imaging, biochemical and mechanical perturbations with mathematical modeling, we demonstrate that the SCWs result from the spatiotemporal integration of two conserved regulatory modules, cdk1-cyclinB for cell cycle regulation and RhoA/Rok/NMYII for actomyosin contractility.

Archipelagos consist of a set of islands forming a collection of basins interconnected by straits, and are typically characterized by widely varying spatial and temporal scales regarding geometry and forcing conditions. Focusing on the strait exchange parameterization, we describe an archipelago water exchange model in which the archipelago is subdivided into a network of discrete basins and interconnecting straits and where the time integration assumes a series of quasi-steady states. We propose an algorithm that should be sufficiently flexible to provide reasonable strait exchange estimates under the variety of forcing conditions encountered in the Stockholm archipelago. Resumen Este estudio trata sobre la contracción del griego ático, como fenómeno prosódico del estrato léxico. Se impone como meta primaria la de ofrecer una caracterización que pueda servir de trasfondo para la comparación con la crasis, proceso análogo del estrato post-léxico. La contracción se analiza con los principios de la fonología métrica en función de la descripción de los valores contrastivos del sistema de vocales del ático. Con tal aproximación, la coalescencia de vocales obedece a la tendencia a eliminar los núcleos de sílaba contiguos, una condición antihiática relacionada con diversos mecanismos de reajuste cuantitativo, que buscan acomodar las sílabas a la longitud máxima de dos moras. Se arguye que el ligamen de los segmentos se realiza de derecha a izquierda, mientras que la propagación de rasgos melódicos se hace en la dirección opuesta, a consecuencia de la primacía del primer núcleo en el entorno del hiato. Its primary aim is a characterization that supplies the background for a comparison with crasis, thought of as a postlexical process. Contraction is analyzed within the metrical phonology theoretical framework in terms of a previous description of the contrastive features of Attic vowel system. With this approach, vowel coalescence obeys a tendency to eliminate contiguous syllable nuclei, an antihiatic condition connected with several mechanisms of quantitative adjustment, which adapt the syllables to the maximal permissible length of two moras per nucleus. It is argued that contraction operates from right to left, while melodic feature spreading acts from the opposite direction, as a consequence of the first nucleus primacy in the hiatus situation.

This paper focuses on assessing the impact of macroeconomic policies on the expansion and contraction of Sudanese real GDP as well as the computation of the number and the expected duration of each for the period of the period 1960Q1-2017Q4. The main tools of analysis are Simple switching regression and Markov switching regression are. The unemployment growth rate is the regime-switching variable in addition to the growth rates of the nominal effective exchange rate, real money supply, current government expenditure, and development expenses as non-switching variables. Markov-switching regression also outweighs simple switching regression in terms of Akaike information criterion, and transition probabilities. Results show that monetary policy was effective between the period of 1960Q1-1976Q4 adding 1.2% of real value. This however is; contrary to the period 1977Q1-1997Q4 where 60% of real value has been lost and improved significantly in the course of 1998Q1-2017Q4, hence, missing only 1%. The effect of the unemployment rate on growth at the period of contraction is almost four-time of the expansion. The positive effect of development expenses combined with the negative impact of current expenditure on the growth rate reveals the efficacy of monetary policy over fiscal. The exchange rate operates as a shock absorber. The expected duration, and the probability of staying in contraction last more than the expansion.
