"Environments people inhabit and experience have the
power to enhance the wellbeing of individuals and their
communities. Life from the Inside promotes discussion
on the potential of interior architecture to improve
and extend the quality of life through the design of our
built environments. The editors position the debate
through three lenses — Community Engagement,
Social Justice and Cultural Heritage. A series of essays
describe and challenge those associated with the
creation of interiors to revaluate the way the discipline
conceptualises and projects itself, and to consider
how it may contribute to addressing the pressures of
contemporary society. The key characteristics of the
profession emerge which enable significant roles to be
played in enhancing social sustainability.
This book gives form to the desire to use design for
positive change as a counter platform to a consumption
driven world. The issues raised by the authors
are relevant for individuals, government and nongovernment
organisations, professionals, students
and communities. It serves as both an informative and
stimulating reflection on what interior architecture is
and could be in the twenty-first century."

Company entered into a joint private-public (PPP) partnership to form HKDL: Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005. In pursuit of profit HKDL tried to "indigenize" or localize to the community by using a local workforce, consumption, language, and cultural space accommodations. There is much written about indigenization but not from the worker's perspective. Based on interview data of a small sample of Hong Kong Disneyland workers, this case study investigates the workers' assessment of whether "indigenization" practices are successful or not. Findings show that workers are ambivalent about indigenization citing negative public relations, and adverse mainland Chinese tourist interactions. The workers feel that true indigenization is complicated by various factors such as perceptions of ethnic and national superiority complexes, ambivalence, and continuing unequal treatment.

Resumo: As antigas ordens monásticas postas em causa devido às riquezas acumuladas e vida
faustosa inadequada aos princípios cristãos que deveriam seguir, foram ultrapassadas pelas novas
ordens conventuais, de cariz urbano e com valores ético-religiosos renovados. Destes movimentos,
os mendicantes, assumiram papel relevante devido à ação marcante desenvolvida no
apoio às populações urbanas. Efetivamente, no século XIII o ideal de pobreza na Europa cristã
foi totalmente reforçado por S. Francisco de Assis. Os novos religiosos, seus seguidores, – irmãos
menores – adotaram uma vida despojada e errante fundando, rápida e progressivamente,
na proximidade dos núcleos urbanos situados nos territórios à data conhecidos, novas casas religiosas.
Para tal contribuiu o espírito missionário acentuado que, pouco depois do início deste
movimento, galvanizou os seus inúmeros seguidores. A divulgação deste ideal através, quer das
ações quer dos preceitos evangélicos ocorreu nas mais remotas cidades. Quanto ao seu legado
patrimonial edificado ele perdurou também em locais longínquos. Irão ser estudados três casos,
em diferentes continentes e épocas de implantação distintas: os conventos de S. Francisco em
Évora (Europa) de 1216, o de S. Francisco em Goa (Ásia) datado de 1518 e o de S. Francisco
em Salvador (América), de 1585. Pretende-se analisar nestes três legados patrimoniais, situados
em diferentes espaços geo-temporais, todos erigidos em antigo território português, quer a sua
arquitetura assim como a influência que os mandamentos de pobreza indissociável desta Ordem
representaram quer na construção inicial, quer no atual legado.

Abstract: The ancient monastic orders called into question because of the accumulated wealth
and lavish life inadequate with Christian principles, which then ought to have been superseded
by the new monastic orders of urban nature and renewed ethical and religious values.These
movements, the beggars, assumed an important role due to the strong action developed to support
urban populations. Indeed, in the thirteenth century the ideal of poverty in Christian Europe
was fully reinforced by St. Francisco de Assis. The new religious, their followers, ─younger
brothers─ adopted a stripped-down and errant life, establishing new religious houses rapidly
and progressively, in the proximity of the urban nuclei situated in the territories known to date.
Contributing to this the very missionary spirit, shortly after the beginning of this movement,
galvanized its many followers. The spread of this ideal through both evangelical actions and
precepts occurred in the most remote cities. As for its built heritage legacy, he also endured in
faraway places. Will be studied three cases in different continents and different deployment
times: the convents of St. Francisco in Evora (Europe) 1216, the St. Francis in Goa (Asia) dated
1518 and St. Francisco in Salvador (America), from 1585. We intend to analyze these three
legacies, located in different geo-temporal spaces, all erected in the former Portuguese territory
or its architecture as well as the influence that the inseparable poverty commandments of this
Order represented either in the initial construction, whether in the current legacy.

Nostalgia has consistently been a motivation for the study of contemporary Chinese urban life. Scholars have produced an abundance of work on urbanism from a pro-historic preservation perspective and, for example, have long claimed that the lilong house (‘li’ means neighbourhoods, ‘long’ means lanes) is an efficient form of housing for the residents of Shanghai. Non Arkaraprasertkul argues, however, that these studies fall short in terms of future city planning, as they omit the personal experiences and viewpoints of urban residents regarding the efficiency of such dwellings.

The term leprosy  has been employed by millenniums, in association with degrading situations. This negative aspect, culturally constructed, it has a fictional character that originates in non-scientific attempts of explain the unknown. The prejudice has been expanded as Christianity, when the disease has come to be understood as a consequence of punishment divine. For reveal the other side this stigmatizing vision arise books of nature autobiographical and documentaries that aim to convey individual experiences, to report the suffering caused by isolation policies and to reduce the prejudice related to the disease. In order to expand the understanding of human suffering and advance with process of deconstruction of prejudice related with the disease, we propose us to explore some memory places, of historical relevance.

This government report is addressing the importance of the interior ensembles: the heritage meaning of the relation between movables and immovables.
This report is analyzing the Dutch situation: its relation and setting within the Dutch heritage policies, the four different types that can be discerned, a quick overview of the situation in some other European countries, a rough inventory of the quantity and possible selection methods, and possible solutions to find a satisfactory government policy on this privacy-related matter.

This report was written by a team of in total 13 persons from five different Dutch cultural and heritage agencies.
