: The purpose of the testing reported herein was to obtain data describing fluid and structural behavior (interaction of fluid on structure and of structure on fluid) in a controlled experiment in a systematic manner. These data are to be used for (a) validation of fluid/structure interaction (FSI) modeling codes and (b) to demonstrate a process for archiving and accessing the data. The approach, which uses two types of models (wing and tethered mass), was to obtain ambient upstream, wall, and downstream static and dynamic fluid pressures for the models in various dynamic conditions.

A fully automated design methodology based on nonlinear response history analysis is proposed for the optimum seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The conventional trial-and-error process is replaced by a structural optimization algorithm that serves as a search engine capable of locating the most efficient design in terms of cost and performance. Two variations of the proposed design methodology are introduced. The first approach treats the optimum design problem in a deterministic manner, while in the second variation the optimum design is sought in the framework of a reliability-based optimization problem. The reliability-based approach seems to be a more rational procedure since more meaningful design criteria that correlate better with the performance-based design concept can be adopted. The increasing demand for up-to-date 3-D geographic information systems (GIS) in planning, transportation, and utility management applications poses significant challenges to the Geomatics community. Of all the challenges in acquiring, building, maintaining, and using GIS, none is more central than that of dala acquisition. Obtaining the required spatial and attribute data by conventional methods such as aerial photogrammetry and terrestrial surveying is expensive, slow, or inaccurate. These methods are, therefore, not well suited for rapid updating. Fortunately, however, the development of land-based mobile mapping systems (MMS) has opened a new avenue to meet these challenges. : A sounding climatology of a variety of parameters commonly used to forecast deep, moist convection using upper-air observations is developed. The data set includes 0000 and 1200 UTC rawinsonde data (approximately 3629 soundings) from Laughlin AFB, TX from April September 1995 2004. Cloud-to-ground lightning data, surface observations, and severe weather reports from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) SeverePlot2 Program were used to categorize soundings as representative of conditions for no convection, light convection, convection within vicinity, moderate severe convection, or severe convection. This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 13272 “Computer Science in High Performance Sport – Applications and Implications for Professional Coaching”. There were 25 presentations organized into 5 sessions over the course of three days focusing on various aspects on the relevance, applications and current issues pertaining to computer science in sport and it’s applications for professional coaching. Each session covered miscellaneous topics that looked at its broad topics ranging from hardware devices for mobile coaching, modelling sports as dynamical systems, use of neural networks in performance analysis as well as theoretical issues in human movement science, and serious games. Once again the Dagstuhl seminar concept provided benefits for the experts from different fields and countries that otherwise would hardly meet and have the opportunity to exchange their ideas in an informal way. An understanding of what influences sinkhole formation and the ability to accurately predict sinkhole hazards is critical to environmental management efforts in the karst lands of southeastern Minnesota. Based on the distribution of distances to the nearest sinkhole, sinkhole density, bedrock geology and depth to bedrock in southeastern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa, a decision tree model has been developed to construct maps of sinkhole probability in Minnesota. The decision tree model was converted as cartographic models and implemented in ArcGIS to create a preliminary sinkhole probability map in Goodhue, Wabasha, Olmsted, Fillmore, and Mower Counties. This model quantifies bedrock geology, depth to bedrock, sinkhole density, and neighborhood effects in southeastern Minnesota but excludes potential controlling factors such as structural control, topographic settings, human activities and land-use. The sinkhole probability map needs to be verified and updated as more sinkholes are mapped and more information about sinkhole formation is obtained.

On 16 October 1979, a tsunami of a local origin hits the French Riviera around Nice, France, killing 8 people and generating important economic losses. Its impact was felt from Hyères to Menton, France. The main effect of this tsunami was flooding in the neighborhoods of La Salis and La Garoupe, Antibes, France. A synthesis of unpublished reports written in the context of an administrative investigation was conducted. Various archives were also consulted (newspapers, fire and rescue unit reports, insurance reports, etc.), and a field survey was organized in 2009 to record testimonies from the inhabitants who witnessed the flood in La Salis, Antibes, the area where the effects of the tsunami were the greatest. A geo-database of the neighborhood of La Salis was built using available aerial imagery, land cover data and digital terrain models, to reconstruct the surface of the flooded area as it was in 1979 and as it is now. Comparing precise testimonies and the 1979 topographic information available allowed the authors to precisely map the flood and to deduce the runup values which reached 3.5 m locally, with a maximal distance of flooding of 150 m inland. This paper provides modelers with precious information about the extent of flooding and the time sequence in order to reconstitute the propagation and flooding of the 16 October 1979 tsunami. This information highlights the fact that the French Riviera is a low hazard, but high vulnerability area.

Seagrass meadows cover about 0.05-0.15% of the world’s ocean and are some of the most productive systems on Earth. Direct and indirect human-derived impacts have led to significant seagrass declines worldwide and the alteration of services linked to their biodiversity. Effective conservation and the provision of sustainable recovery goals for ecologically significant species, such as green turtles (Chelonia mydas), are limited by the absence of reliable information on seagrass extent. This is especially true for the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR) where many conservation initiatives are under way, but impaired by the lack of accurate baseline habitat maps. To assist with such a fundamental conservation need using high resolution remote sensing data, both environmental and methodological challenges need to be tackled. First, the diversity of environments, the heterogeneity of habitats, and the vast extent of the targeted region mean that local expertise and field data are seldom available. Second, large-scale high-resolution mapping requires several hundred Landsat 5 and 7 images, which poses substantial processing problems. The main goal of this study was to test the feasibility of achieving Landsatbased large-scale seagrass mapping with limited ground-truth data and acceptable accuracies. We used the following combination of methods to map seagrasses throughout the WCR: geomorphological segmentation, contextual editing, and supervised classifications. A total of 40 Landsat scenes (path-row) were processed. Three major classes were derived (“dense seagrass”, “medium-sparse seagrass”, and a generic “other” class). Products’ accuracies were assessed against (i) selected in situ data; (ii) patterns detectable with very high-resolution IKONOS images; and (iii) published habitat maps with documented accuracies. Despite variable overall classification accuracies (45-85%), the resulting thematic maps were deemed acceptable to (i) regionally provide, following their critical evaluation, an adequate baseline for further large-scale conservation programs and research actions; and (ii) regionally re-assess carrying capacity estimates for green turtles. They certainly should represent a drastic improvement relative to current regional databases.

The Water Resources Planning Organization (WARPO) is a statutory organization (Water Resources Planning Act, 1992) under the Ministry of Water Resources, which deals with water resources strategic planning and management in Bangladesh. One of the core functions of WARPO is to update and maintain the National Water Resources Database (NWRD). According to National Water Policy (NWPo, 1999) article 5.d.iv., WARPO will set up and update the National Water Resources Database (NWRD) and Information Management System. According to this direction, WARPO has prepared the NWRD while preparing the NWMP in 2001. Now-a-days, the NWRD is used for national and regional level planning, research and study by governmental, non-governmental organizations and others. For national or regional level planning and management, all data should be authentic or reliable and readily accessible. Planners in Bangladesh need access to a wide range of data to assess resources, demands and constraints, evaluate options and formulate alternative strategies. The NWRD is the largest geo-spatial database in the country, which contains more than 450 layers of spatial and temporal datasets. After creation of NWRD, it is being updated with the project activities. Few updated tasks had been done with Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan (ICZMP) project in 2005. Recently few updated tasks are being continued with Water management Improvement Project (WMIP) project, but it is not enough for proper maintaining of NWRD. This study has shown the details analysis of NWRD, the existing gaps of NWRD and has recommended the common implementation strategy for proper maintaining of NWRD.
