Hydrography

Turkey has been divided into 26 basins for studies related to water resources development. Surface areas of the basins range between 6,300 – 127,500 km2, the average being approximately 30,000 km2. Compared with nested watershed classification of U.S., the average size of Turkish national basins corresponds to the third-level (basins). Currently, a forth-level (sub-basins) with an average size of 1,820 km2 reside below the basins in U.S. classification. Even these sub-basins are found to be too large to adequately serve many water resource management needs. Two additional levels (watersheds and sub-watersheds) are currently under development in order to solve this problem. Taking this fact into consideration, currently existing basins of Turkey are supposed to be too large for effective water resources management and there is a need for delineation of sub-basins in a scientific manner. In this study, the boundaries of proto-type sub-basins are determined by using DEM-based automated delineation techniques. For this purpose, 30 arc-seconds SRTM30 DEM is re-projected into an equal area projection, hydrologic sinks are filled and inaccurate elevation values are corrected. In order to prevent invalid delineation of closed basins that cover approximately 10% of the country, water bodies located at the center of these basins are extracted from Global Land Cover Characteristics dataset of USGS and excluded from the process. Among the alternatives, Deterministic-8 (D-8) algorithm with modifications by Garbrecht and Martz is used to calculate flow direction and flow accumulation grids. Using these grids, a set of candidate sub-basins are generated by applying different area thresholds. A threshold of 1,000 km2 resulted in 359 sub-basins with an average size of 1,858 km2, both of which are found to be appropriate and manageable for nationwide usage. Similarity of the average size of the delineated sub-basins to that of U.S. sub-basins also supports this result.

This article aims to characterize the National Seaboard of Angola. To this end, we analyzed the way in which the current NMR is constituted, how it works and, using recommendations, certain changes were indicated for its improvement. Thus, the efficiency of the current NMR was problematized, based on the hypothesis that it still does not correspond to the needs that the Angolan coast presents, from the point of view of its monitoring of variations in the average sea water level. In order to achieve the proposed objective, the documentary and bibliographic research technique was used, as well as the deductive method with a quantitative approach. After analyzing the data collected in the field, it was concluded that the current National Seaboard of Angola does not yet meet the needs, and in order for it to establish itself as an efficient monitoring system, it will need to be improved based on some recommendations presented in this article.

There is a great demand for accurate and high-resolution seafloor topography (bathymetry) data. However, at present availability of such data remains spatially incomplete and limited. Bathymetry in shallow water areas is challenging for vessel-based bathymetric surveys and this zone is where remote sensing typically outperforms traditional methods such as echo sounding. The obvious advantages over conventional echo sounding methods include the wide data availability, synoptic surface coverage, and improved spatial resolution. Due to the high cost associated with traditional bathymetric surveys, the availability of up-to-date bathymetric charts in developing countries is rare or limited to a few charts for some areas. In this study, a ratio-transform model was applied on Landsat imagery to derive bathymetry at sites in nine rivers and creeks along the Nigerian coastal area. Accuracy tests comparing the image-derived bathymetry with reference data from echo sounding of Lighthouse Creek in Lagos and hydrographic charts of the other sites confirms good agreement at some sampled locations. The results of this study prove that this remote sensing method can augment existing hydrographic datasets in the country and is a useful reconnaissance tool for hydrographic surveying offices. It also offers a viable interim solution for areas where there is inadequate hydrographic data and scarce resources for extensive surveys using other methods.

The infrastructure of the original Guapo river dam project at El Guamito site (Miranda state, Venezuela), built and commissioning during the 1975-1977 period, collapsed in December 1999 as a result of the extraordinary rains observed at that time, which generated maximum discharges with magnitudes higher than the design discharge of the work. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between the hydrogeomorphological response of the Guapo river basin generated by this extraordinary rains event, the characteristics of the physical and biological media, and the conditions that these determined for the collapse of the dam. Variables of the physical and biological media, in particular climatic and hydrological aspects, were characterized. Morphometric parameters of the basin and its drainage network were measured and calculated. Topographic and geomorphological features were described with the construction of profiles. The physical and biological elements (geology, relief, geomorphology, topography, soil, vegetation, climate, drainage and hydrology) that coexist in the area of the basin have an important influence on the hydrogeomorphological responses of the system (floods, sediment production and haulage and mass movements). The morphometric characteristics of the basin indicate a high correspondence between these aspects and the collapse of the spillway, since they favoured the high discharges that were estimated at the dam site during the occurrence of this adverse event.

La red hidrográfica de Caracas ha sido determinante para su desarrollo como ciudad desde el período colonial hasta el presente, en el abastecimiento de agua para el consumo, transporte fluvial de mercancías, regadío de plantaciones, canal de aguas servidas, desechos y de escorrentía. La ocurrencia de eventos catastróficos vinculados a respuestas hidrológicas extremas de los cursos de agua en la ciudad capital, ha sido de una frecuencia significativa, tal como lo atestigua el historial de eventos documentados. El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar la evolución de la quebrada Caroata como elemento transitorio del paisaje geográfico en la Caracas de las primeras décadas del siglo XX, teniendo el sector Avenida La Laguna-Los Magallanes de Catia, Parroquia Sucre, Distrito Capital, una susceptibilidad potencial ante riesgos geológicos e hidrometeorológicos.

Ofiyolit sahaların hidrografik, hidrolojik ve hidrojeolojik özelliklerinin analizini yaparak topografik satıhda yaygın mostralarıyla dikkat çeken bu litolojik ünitelerin su ile münasebetleri ortaya koymaya yönelik, naçiz bir katkı sağlama ümidiyle şekillenen bu çalışmada Mirdita, Trodos, Kızıldağ ve Şemail ofiyolitlerine ait saha verileri üzerinden bütün ofiyolitlere genellenebilecek çıktılar üretilmeye çalışılmıştır. Sahada edinilen izlenimler ile literatürde yer bulan çok sayıda çalışmanın ofiyolitlere atfedilen impermeabil ve akifüj gibi nitelemeleri tekzip etmesi sebebiyle çalışma sayesinde ofiyolitik seriye ait birimleri hakkında var olduğuna inanılan hatalı ön kabullerin giderilmesi için de ayrıca gayret sarfedilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular ofiyolitlerin sanılanın aksine özellikle ikincil porozitelerine bağlı olarak sızmayı ve yeraltı sularını destekleyen, aynı zamanda da görece yüksek meteorik su girdileri ve akiklüd karakterindeki iç yapıları sebebiyle de hem yüzey hem de yeraltı su potansiyeli bakımından önem arz eden sahalara karşılık geldiklerini ortaya koymuştur. Çalışma boyunca bütün analiz ve değerlendirmelerde kuşatıcı, aynı zamanda da ilişkiledirici perspektifiyle coğrafi bakış açısından ve suyun bütün canlıların üzerinde hak sahibi olduğu hayati bir ihtiyaç maddesine karşılık geldiği gerçeğinden hiçbir surette taviz verilmemiştir.

Türkiye’nin güneyinde yer alan ve Amanos Dağlarının doğu yamaçları ile Kurt Dağlarının batı yamaçları arasında, Doğu Afrika rift vadisinin kuzey segmentine karşılık gelen Karasu Çayı Havzasının ele alındığı bu çalışmada, Türkiye ve Suriye topraklarından oluşan havzanın hidrografik açıdan planlaması yapılmıştır. Coğrafi bakış açısı ve bütüncül yaklaşım, insan ve doğal çevre temelli olarak sürdürülebilirlik ilkesine uygun bir şekilde çalışmanın her aşamasına yayılmış ve entegre havza yönetiminden farklı olarak en ekonomik değil, hem doğal ortamın hem de insanın en yüksek faydayı temin edebileceği en doğru kullanımın ne şekilde olacağı üzerinde yoğunlaşılmıştır. Üç bölüm üzerine kurgulanan çalışmanın ilk iki bölümü ağırlıklı olarak verilerin sistematize edilmeleri ile ölçüm ve analizler ekseninde veri tabanının güçlü kılınmasına, üçüncü bölümü ise güçlendirilen bu veri tabanına dayanarak havzanın hidrografik açıdan planlamasının yapılmasına ayrılmıştır.
Giriş bölümünde amaç, kapsam ve metot ortaya konularak, Karasu Çayı Havzasının hidrografik özelliklerinin şekillenmesinde etkili olan genel coğrafi faktörler üzerinde durulmuştur. Sırasıyla fiziki coğrafya unsurları ile beşeri ve ekonomik coğrafya unsurları alt başlıklarıyla birlikte ayrı ayrı ele alınmıştır. İlgili haritaların oluşturularak gereken kısımlara iliştirilmesi ile anlatım güçlendirilmiş ve ifade zenginliğinin ortaya çıkması sağlanmıştır.
Havzanın hidrolojik ve hidrometrik özelliklerinin incelendiği birinci bölümde havzadaki su potansiyeli belirlenmiş, yeraltı ve yerüstü sularının durumu gözden geçirilerek, akarsu şebekesinin oluşum ve gelişimi üzerinde durulmuştur. Ayrıca havzanın hidrolik ve hidrolojik özelliklerinin daha iyi kavranması için gerek mevcut literatürde yer alan, gerekse bu çalışmaya özgü bir takım yeni yöntemlere göre analiz ve hesaplamalar yapılmıştır. Sonuçta havzanın ortalama akış dağılışı, su kalitesi, yük ve sedimantasyon durumu, taşkın özellikleri ve kullanılabilir su potansiyeli hakkında somut verilere ulaşılmıştır. Böylelikle herhangi bir ölçüm ve rasadın bulunmadığı birçok alt Havza hakkında tümdengelim mantığı ile verilere ulaşılmış, bu veriler sayesinde de her alt havza kendi dinamikleri içerisinde değerlendirilmiştir.
Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde Karasu Çayı Havzasının morfometrik karakteristikleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Morfometrik özellikler alansal (areal), çizgisel (linear) ve yüzeysel (relief/superficial) parametreler olmak üzere üç gruba ayrılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Böylelikle havzanın jeomorfolojik ve hidrografik yapısına analitik yolla somut bir görünüm kazandırılmıştır. İzlenen yolu ve elde edilen sonuçları daha anlaşılır kılmak için morfometrik analizlerin dayandırıldığı formüller, analiz sonuçlarını görsel hale getiren haritalar, grafikler ve şekillerden faydalanılmıştır. Bu şekilde elde edilen havzanın alansal, çizgisel ve yüzeysel bileşenlerine dair veriler Karasu Çayı Havzası ile alt havzaları ölçeğinde yorumlanmıştır.
Çalışmanın son bölümü, önceki iki bölümün hülasası konumundadır. Burada daha önceki veriler ışığında öncelikle havzanın su bilançosu çıkarılmıştır. Ardından da güncel durum ile 10, 25, 50 ve 100 yıl sonranın muhtemel şartlarına göre su bütçesi oluşturulmuştur. Bu kapsamda katastrofik, ekonomik, sosyo-kültürel değerlendirmeler ile jeo-stratejik ve hidro-politik durum tespiti yapılarak, en uygun fiziki ve beşeri şartların tesis edilmesine ön ayak olacak planlama önerileri geliştirilmiştir.
Sonuç itibariyle, ideal havza planlamasına bir adım daha yaklaşma gayesiyle ortaya çıkan bu çalışmada, multi-disipliner karaktere sahip olan havza yönetimi meselesine coğrafi bakış açısı ile yeni ve daha kuşatıcı bir perspektif kazandırılmaya çalışılmıştır. Zaten doğası gereği değişken ve çok bileşenli olan su kaynaklarının yorumlanıp planlanması da ancak doğal çevrenin bütün unsurlarını ve bu unsurlar arasındaki ilişkileri aynı pota içerisinde harmanlayıp muhasebe edebilecek olan coğrafi bakış açısıyla bihakkın yapılabilecektir.

Sistem penentuan posisi akustik bawah laut adalah sistem penentuan posisi yang menggunakan prinsip hidro-akustik dalam menentukan posisi suatu objek yang ada di bawah laut. Karena gelombang elektromagnetik sangat lemah ketika di bawah air maka dalam menentukan posisi suatu objek di bawah laut menggunakan gelombang akustik. Ada berbagai macam metode yang dipakai dan tiap-tiap metode memiliki kelebihan dan kekurangannya masing-masing.

As oportunidades para empreender projetos de desenvolvimento socioambiental na bacia do rio Araguari são evidentes. E por este motivo necessitam de estudos ad hoc que integrem ao máximo as dispersas informações nesta unidade territorial. Portanto, o objetivo geral do texto é disponibilizar algumas bases científicas para formulação de políticas de uso conservação dos recursos hídricos da bacia do Rio Araguari. Como consequência, espera-se apresentar o estado-da-arte das informações necessárias para apoiar processos de desenvolvimento sustentáveis, gestão racional e otimização das tomadas de decisão nessa abrangente área geográfica do Estado do Amapá.
Nos próximos capítulos serão tratados especificamente de informações de dados secundários e primários sobre diversos aspectos ambientais do rio Araguari para uma avaliação sobre o uso e ocupação do solo e as pressões antrópicas que ocorrem na bacia do Rio Araguari. Em síntese, propor e sugerir estratégias para a promoção da gestão e ordenamento territorial da bacia hidrográfica, a partir de uma análise das atuais demandas socioambientais como suporte à estruturação de programas de gestão para a bacia hidrográfica do Rio Araguari.

Dynamiques d'occupation du sol dans la vallée de la Midouze (Landes) (Mémoire de Master 2)
Dans ce mémoire je vous présente le résultat de recherches inédites en archéologie effectuées dans les Landes, dans la vallée de la Midouze, rivière prenant naissance à Mont-de-Marsan. 
Ce territoire, sous couvert forestier, n'a quasiment pas été exploré par l'archéologie jusque dans les années 1990 avec la création d'une structure associative : le Centre de Recherches Archéologiques sur les Landes.
Le CRAL a innové en pratiquant la prospection lors des reboisements de la forêt industriel. Les techniques de prospections se sont améliorées progressivement puis l'utilisation des GPS a permis d'obtenir des résultats exploitables et surprenants.
La période chronologique de ces travaux de recherches est focalisée sur la période romaine. Les autres périodes chronologiques seront développées dans des travaux complémentaires débouchant sur une thèse.

Teluk Jakarta adalah sebuah perairan di utara Jakarta yang memiliki kedalaman relatif dangkal dan morfologinya dibentuk oleh hasil endapan sedimen sungai (Ongkosongo et al., 1977). Teluk ini menjadi vital karena baik pada badan perairannya maupun pada pesisirnya terdapat aneka ragam kegiatan ekonomi seperti pelayaran, pelabuhan, pariwisata, perikanan tangkap, pemukiman, industri dan perdagangan. Terdapat setidaknya 13 (tiga belas) sungai yang bermuara di Teluk Jakarta, sehingga membuat Teluk Jakarta menerima cukup banyak transpor massa sedimen dan limbah dari hulu hingga hilir ketigabelas sungai tersebut sebagai akibat dari banyaknya aktivitas di sepanjang tepian sungai-sungai itu. Semua sedimen dan limbah yang dibawa itu lantas kemudian akan terakumulasi di perairan muara. Sebagai akibat dari akumulasi sedimen dan limbah dalam jumlah yang relatif semakin meningkat oleh karena meningkatnya pula kegiatan di darat dari waktu ke waktu, Teluk Jakarta kemudian mengalami degradasi lingkungan. Berbagai penelitian mengenai degradasi lingkungan di Teluk Jakarta telah dilakukan sejak lama mulai dari Yatim et al. (1979) dan diikuti Hutagalung (1997); Williams et al. (2000); Lestari dan Edward (2004); Sanusi et al. (2005); Sutisna (2007) Arifin dan Fadhlina (2009); Hamzah dan Setiawan (2010). Degradasi Teluk Jakarta diindikasikan dengan keadaan peristiwa blooming fitoplankton (Wardianto et al., 2004), penurunan kualitas hidup pada kerang hijau (Jalius et al. 2008) dan degradasi ekosistem terumbu karang (Estradivarti et al., 2007). Selain kasus-kasus pencemaran perairan seperti yang telah disebutkan contohnya, permasalahan perairan Teluk Jakarta adalah laju sedimentasi yang relatif tinggi akibat banyaknya material yang ditransportasikan oleh aliran sungai. Tingginya laju sedimentasi di Teluk Jakarta sejatinya sudah mulai teridentifikasi sejak awal tahun 1970-an sebagai akibat dari perubahan yang terjadi di daerah hulu dan sepanjang aliran sungai-sungai yang mengalir ke Teluk Jakarta (Lubis et al., 2007). Pemerintah Republik Indonesia melalui Program Pengembangan Terpadu Pesisir Ibukota Negara atau National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) sejak Januari 2013 membuat rencana induk (master plan) untuk melanjutkan program Jakarta Coastal Defence Strategy (JCDS) untuk merumuskan suatu strategi komprehensif untuk mengatasi permasalahan banjir di Jakarta. Berdasarkan data BPS tahun 2010, wilayah Provinsi DKI Jakarta yang memiliki luas kurang lebih 7.500 km 2 dan jumlah penduduk mencapai 27,9 juta jiwa merupakan provinsi yang memiliki kepadatan penduduk tertinggi di Indonesia. Terdapat sekitar 4 juta penduduk yang tinggal di daerah rentan terhadap bencana banjir. Banjir juga diperkirakan dapat menimbulkan nilai kerugian ekonomi sekitar 104 triliun dollar Amerika (NCICD, 2013), jika bencana banjir tersebut terus berlarut-larut dan tidak diatasi. Salah satu proyek yang digelontorkan oleh NCICD dalam mengatasi permasalahan banjir di Jakarta adalah pembangunan tanggul laut raksasa: Giant Sea Wall Jakarta (GSW Jakarta). Pembangunannya tentu memerlukan kajian yang mendalam mengingat kegiatan pembangunan tersebut mengubah morfologi yang ada dan kemudian pasti memiliki dampak pada lingkungan dan ekosistem perairan Teluk Jakarta dan kehidupan sosial ekonomi masyarakat di sekitarnya. Selain proyek GSW Jakarta, terdapat proyek lain di Teluk Jakarta yang nyata-nyata juga mengubah morfologi perairannya. Proyek tersebut adalah proyek reklamasi Teluk Jakarta yang dirancang oleh Pemerintah Pusat dan Daerah sebagai jawaban atas keterbatasan ruang di Jakarta. METODOLOGI DAN BATASAN Dalam makalah ini, kajian prediksi dan analisis perubahan kondisi perairan Teluk Jakarta sebelum dan sesudah pembangunan GSW Jakarta dan pulau-pulau reklamasi, dibatasi dengan mengkaji hanya pada perubahan perilaku fluktuasi muka air laut dan perilaku arus di Teluk Jakarta. Proses prediksi dilakukan dengan menggunakan perangkat lunak pemodelan Delft3D dengan mengasumsikan hanya faktor pasang surut dan masukan air dari sungai-sungai yang akan berperan terhadap perubahan muka laut dan arus. Secara temporal, prediksi ini mencakup waktu satu bulan, pada bulan Januari tahun 2014. Secara spasial, area yang dikaji dalam makalah ini adalah Teluk Jakarta sebelum dan sesudah adanya GSW Jakarta dan pulau-pulau reklamasi. Dari beberapa data lokasi pengamatan yang tersedia, terdapat tiga lokasi yang dibahas secara mendalam pada makalah ini. Tiga lokasi itu merepresentasikan masing-masing area yang nantinya terletak di dalam GSW Jakarta (Stasiun IN01), dekat/pada GSW Jakarta (Stasiun WL01), dan di luar GSW Jakarta (Stasiun OU04).

This report presents the results of a research project aimed at searching for and
documenting nautical charts and other maritime related maps covering the Sicily-Malta
channel.116 Searches were made in collections held in a number of Maltese repositories,
both public and private. Public repositories included the National Library of Malta, the
National Archives and the Malta Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa. Furthermore, various
online archives, including that of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, UK were
also explored. All relevant maps were photographed, catalogued and presented on data
cards in both hard and soft copies. It is envisaged that a number of benefits will stem
from the results of this project. These include: 1. A greater awareness among researchers
in both Sicily and Malta of the various maps held in the different repositories; and 2. A
better understanding of the maritime cartography of the Sicily-Malta Channel through
time.

Yapılan araştırmalar, insanoğlunun varoluş sürecinde hayatını sürüdürmek için yeme-içme yanında boşaltım ihtiyacını gidermek üzere de birtakım sistemlere sahip olduğunu ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Tuvalet olgusu, Latince terminoloji ile latrina, her toplum ve her tabakada farklı düzeylerde ve şekillerde de olsa bir sistem olarak işleyiş şekillerine sahiptir. Bu çalışmada ilk olarak latrina kavramının ortaya çıkışından itibaren yüzyıllar içinde geçirdiği evrilme süreci ele alınacak ve Phaselis Latrina yapısı özelinde komşu bölgesel ve bazı Anadolu kentlerindeki örnekler ile karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde söz konusu süreç analiz edilmeye çalışılacaktır. Bunu yaparken kentin olmazsa olmaz yapılarından biri olan Latrina’nın, Phaselis’in yerleşim arkeolojisi içindeki konumu ve mimari özellikleri, rölöve-restitüsyon çalışmalarıyla birlikte incelenecektir. Bu şekilde Latrina’nın, aktif olarak kullanıldığı dönemlerde kentin fiziki ve sosyal durumu hakkında da fikir edinilmeye çalışılacaktır.

Every year, the international hydrographic community celebrates World Hydrography Day on June 21. This year’s theme, established by the International Hydrographic Organization, is “Hydrography ‒ More Than Nautical Charts.” To further the discussion, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Coast Survey invited the public to contribute articles that illustrate the theme. This publication is the result.

It is fact that we are in the world where almost 80%
of the demanding energy is furnished by coal, oil, gas and hydro
power plant. Now this is a time for renewable energy resource to
fulfil our country needs.Pakistan nearly consists of 1545 km of
coastal length. We can generate electricity through different
method as world is utilizing this energy. Now it’s time to
implement some modern technique and expertise on these
explored sites to generate electricity. Harnessing Tidal energy is
one the modern techniques.In this study we compare small scale
model with large creek. by using our simulation model we can
generate 200 MW at 30% efficiency. Using modern techniques
and efficient turbine installation can increase sites efficiency.We
explore three of these sites but there are many sites available to
harness tidal energy. In this study the complete design to install
number of turbines and length for installing turbines is
illustrated.

İnşa süreci bakımından tarihi IV. yüzyıl Roma medeniyetine kadar uzanan Kırkçeşme suyolları yapılışından itibaren yüzyıllar boyunca İstanbul’un en önemli su kaynaklarından birisi olmuştur. Yirminci yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde bile kullanılabilir durumda olan bu kolektif su yapıları ağı mimari altyapısı, sosyal ve stratejik değeri, ekonomik faydaları ile ekosistem içerisindeki yeri göz önüne alındığında hidrografik açıdan üstün özellikler sergilemektedir. Ekolojik denge gözetilerek yapılan havzalar arası su transferi, basınç ve akış hızı gibi hidrodinamik temelli hassas hesaplamalar ile litolojik yapının su kalitesine etkilerinin başarılı tetkikine dayanan seçici isale hatları bu özelliklerin ilk etapta sayılabilecek olanlarıdır. Modern tekniklerle birleşen hidrografik analizler çalışmaya konu olan bu kombine sistemin planlamasından işleyişine kadar çağının çok ilerisinde meziyetlerle bezenmiş olduğunu tartışmaya mahal bırakmaksızın ortaya koymaktadır.
Gerek ilk inşa çekirdeği gerekse sonradan yapılan eklemeler ve iyileştirmeler bazında tam anlamıyla iyi işleyen bir mirasçı medeniyetler ortaklığı abidesi niteliğindeki Kırkçeşme suyolları, aynı zamanda birçok hidrografik uygulamaya ilham kaynağı olabilecek çevreci, ekonomik, randımanlı ve efektif bir model hüviyetindedir. Böylesi nadir ve başarılı örneklerin detaylarına vakıf olunmasını sağlayacak veriler günümüzde su kaynaklarının planlanmasına yönelik çalışmaların kalite, isabet ve yerindelik anlamında seviyesinin yükseltilmesine kapı aralayacaktır.

In pursuit of Nigeria's international obligations on maritime safety, the elimination of dangers to search and rescue efforts in our coastal waters, environmental pollution and destruction of maritime habitats, and hide-out for sea-borne criminal elements, the Federal Ministry of Transport through the National Maritime Authority (NMA), entered into an agreement on June 16, 2003, with Humber Marine Werks Limited (HMW) for Consultancy on Removal of Wrecks and Derelicts in Nigerian Waterways. The aim of the contract was to conduct hydrographic survey of Lagos Ports Area; a critical input to quotations for actual removal of wrecks by contractors to be nominated by the Ministry. It is the first out of four phases of survey contracts required to cover the various port areas in Nigeria. Humber Marine developed a survey priority plan, which identified those areas with the highest risk of maritime accidents, taking cognizance of traffic volume, inadequacy of charts or previous surveys, and potentially insufficient under-keel clearance. State-of-the art technologies were deployed to increase the quality of field data collection. Some of the most significant technological survey tools deployed were Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), echo sounder, magnetometer, and side scan sonar systems with the corresponding computer software-such as HYPACK Max hydrographic software, AutoCAD 2000 software, Surfer Digital Terrain Modelling (DTM) software, and HydroCAD software for reducing sounding data – among others.

The first detailed study of a hydrographic survey that helped change Bermuda forever. Painstaking research by the author has brought to light the activities of Thomas Hurd, Andrew Evans, Jemmy Darrell and many others. Also included in this attractive volume is a great deal of information relating to the survey and how it was used from the time it was completed in 1800 until the present.

Fishes were collected from seamounts and insular slopes of the northern Tasman and southern Coral Seas in the environs of the Reinga Ridge, Norfolk Ridge and Lord Howe Rise, at depths ranging from 49 to 1927 m. A total of 348 demersal fish species in 99 families, which were collected from 135 samples taken with a variety of sampling gear, greatly improved taxonomic knowledge of this poorly known area. Twenty five percent of the fish sampled are considered to be potentially new species. Relatively high levels of regional endemicity and diversity are attributed to geological history, and the complexity of contemporary climatology, hydrography and habitat diversity of the region. Fish assemblages were highly structured by depth, but across regions, deep-water fish faunas showed stronger taxonomic affinities than shallower faunas. Although less pronounced, spatial differences pointed towards distinct faunas between the southern and northern parts of the area. The distribution patterns and affinities to regions adjacent to the survey area indicate that (1) the fish fauna on the Lord Howe Rise near Lord Howe Island and further north is distinct from the rest of the survey regions, and exhibits eastern Australian and northern (Coral Sea) affinities, (2) the Northern Norfolk Ridge fauna is distinct from the other regions and has strong affinities with New Caledonia, (3) fishes on the Southern Norfolk Ridge, Western Norfolk Ridge and Lord Howe Plateau have more shared species compared to the other regions indicating a high level of connectedness and affinities with New Zealand fauna, and (4) some species have a wide distribution along the Norfolk Ridge providing a possible deepwater pathway between New Caledonia and New Zealand. Survey data is also useful for assessing the regions' conservation values by identifying rare or unusual components of the fauna, those with very limited distributions, those with low productivity that may be vulnerable to human disturbance (fishing, mining), and for defining bioregions.

One of the main challenges of underwater archaeology is to develop non-invasive research of heritage sites in order to enable their further protection for future societies. This study explores , identifies and classifies archaeological objects in a shallow lake using underwater acoustics. We solved the aforementioned challenges by developing an innovative, object-based, fuzzy-logic classification of nine archaeological object categories based on multibeam echosounder bathymetry, 13 secondary features of bathymetry and 106 underwater diving prospections. We achieved an 86% correlation with ground-truth samples, and 49% overall accuracy. The unique and repeatable workflow developed in this study can be applied to other case studies of underwater archaeology around the world.

The Orlja river belongs to the hydrographic system of Krivaja River in its upper flow from the left side, in the Crnoriječka plateau and Zvijezda mountain. The rainwaters from mountainous hillsides are mostly surface drained in the Orlja river and, to a lesser extent, infiltrated through carbonate rocks, into a shallow karstic Crnoriječka plateau, where an underground bifurcation of the karstic swalow hole waters is conducted directly in Krivaja, about 4 km downstream of the Olovo and indirectly by the Orlja river, which ends in the Hočevica river, the first rank Krivaja's tributary. Considering the above, Orlja is Krivaja's tributary of the second rank. The Orlja river belongs to constant flows, whose valley is dissected into very deep carbonate canyon valley, which has all characteristics of the gorge rivers. In some places the deep, convex valley slopes endings are interconnecting, and thus indicates that morphological evolution of underground closed flow; swallow holes, through the collapsed roof opening, in the open, overhead, hydrographic system. The Orlja river valley is unique morphological unit, which, from a normal river valley in the upper flow evolve into the canyon valley and ends with a stepwise riverbed with numerous waterfalls, that local people reffers to as Skokovi.
