The article describes the pharmacocodynamics of povidone-iodine, the release form under the brand name Betadine, pharmacological benefits, as well as evidence of its effectiveness in preventing infection in the field of surgical intervention. Povidone-iodine is indicated to be a depot of iodine, constantly releasing elemental iodine, which has strong oxidizing properties, and therefore most microorganisms are destroyed in vitro in less than a minute, and the main destructive effect of the drug occurs in the first 15–30 seconds. Povidone-iodine has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial and antiviral action.

The data on medications of povidone-iodine in the form of vaginal suppositories, antiseptic solution and ointment under the trade name Betadine are presented. Own data on the effective use of vaginal suppositories in symptomatic vaginal dysbiosis caused by mixed opportunistic bacterial flora (facultative and obligate anaerobes) with the presence of Atopobium vaginae in diagnostically significant amounts are presented.

In the presented comparative studies, the advantages of Betadine compared with other antiseptics in the spectrum of microbiological effects, resistance of microorganisms, effects on wound healing, dependence of the effect on the physico-chemical parameters of the environment, side effects, the purpose of application – prevention and/or treatment are shown.

The results of recent comparative studies on the treatment of the surgical area with chlohexidine-alcohol and povidone-iodine, according to which povidone-iodine should still be considered acceptable for the preoperative treatment of the caesarean section, are highlighted. It is indicated that the irrigation of the wound cavity with an aqueous solution of povidone-iodine during surgery and before suturing the surgical wound is one of the WHO recommendations for the prevention of infection in the field of surgical intervention.

The authors conclude that povidone-iodine, including Betadine, has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial and antiviral activity; high activity in the presence of organic compounds (blood, pus); ability to penetrate through biofilms, necrotic tissue, eschar; low incidence of antiseptic resistance; positive dynamics of wound healing by preventing the spread of inflammation and increasing the ability to heal; well tolerated by patients; low cost; ease of use.

An attempt has been made to study the effect of dilution, addition of diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAHP), pectinesterase enzyme and citric acid on the fermentability, physico-chemical and sensory quality characteristics of muskmelon wine. Initial physico-chemical characteristics of the muskmelon pulp showed that it is an average source of sugars and a good source of phenols, which make it more suitable as fermentation media. Out of the two dilutions, fermentation of 1:1 dilution of muskmelon pulp gave good fermentability, physico-chemical and sensory characteristics except fermentation efficiency and amino acid content. Fermentability, physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of muskmelon wine was found to be affected significantly by the addition of DAHP in the must. The addition of pectinesterase enzyme significantly effected fermentability, physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of the muskmelon wine except pH, titratable acidity and amino acid content. Addition of citric acid in the must did not show any drastic impact on the quality of muskmelon wine. Clustering of the data showed that muskmelon wine prepared using 1:1 dilution of pulp with the addition of DAHP and pectinesterase enzyme fell in one cluster, whereas, the rest of the wines fell in the other cluster. Physico-chemical characteristics and variables of muskmelon wine were reduced to two principal components using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) that accounted for 89.02% and 98.03% variation respectively. It is concluded that 1:1 dilution of muskmelon pulp, with the addition of DAHP, pectinesterase enzyme and citric acid can be successfully used for the preparation of good quality muskmelon wine.

The association of early postnatal growth with diseases in adults such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and CHD has generated interest in studying postnatal growth. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a useful measure to estimate total body water (TBW) and fat-free mass (FFM). We evaluated three published equations (Fjeld et al. (Pediatr Res (1990) 27, 98–102), Bocage (MSc Thesis (1988) University of West Indies) and Kushner et al. Objective:To identify the source of an epidemic ofBurkholderia cepaciabloodstream infections during 7 years (411 episodes in 361 patients).Design:Outbreak investigation.Setting:A 250-bed university hospital in Beirut, Lebanon.Methods:Matched case-control and retrospective cohort studies, and microbiological surveillance and polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length ascertainment were employed. Special media and filtration techniques were used to isolate organisms from water and diluted alcohol solutions.Results:In a group of 50 randomly selected case-matched patients from 1999, the positive blood cultures were concomitant with fever in 98%, intravenous phlebitis in 44%, and recurrent bacteremia in 20%. This vitamin is beneficial for skin and eye diseases, as well as increases resistance to cardiovascular disease and cancer.Due to its high content of anthocyanins, black carrot is used as a natural dye in the food industry. One of the best alternatives to artificial food colors, black radish juice contains a lot of anthocyanins, as well as heat and light resistance. Solid black carrot juice has 13-14 times more antioxidant properties than other solid carrot juices, and is more resistant to heat and pH changes. It is used as a natural color additive in some fruit products. Black carrot is also used as a natural food supplement in the food industry. It is a very strong alternative to carmine in low pH and can retain its red color even in high pH.

As a mega-project which will affect the environment, the feasibility of this project must be very thoroughly studied, especially the changing limnology of the Dead Sea. The amount of the desalinated water produced by this project might be significant for the region. The saved external sources of energy to produce drinking water in these projects is between 20% to 30%,

Microalgae have the potential to grow in nutrient-rich environments and have the ability to accumulate nutrients from wastewater. The nutrients in malting wastewater are ideal for microalgae cultivation. However, there is limited published work on the growth characteristics of freshwater microalgae grown in malting effluent. This study examined the potential of diluted malting effluent for the growth of freshwater green algae Chlorella sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. isolated from northern Ontario and subsequent biomass and lipid production. Under the 18:6 h light/dark cultivation cycle, the highest cell number counted (540 × 104 cell·mL−1 on day 20) and total chlorophyll content were found in 50% diluted malting effluents for Chlorella sp., whereas the 70% dilution concentration was the most productive for Chlamydomonas (386 × 104 cell·mL−1 on day 16). Water quality has interrelationships with anthropogenic activities. The water quality status of the Yamuna River, India, was evaluated spatially in terms of its physical, chemical and biological parameters for both pre- and post-monsoon periods. For the River Yamuna, pH decreased from site 1 to site 4 and then increased from site 5 to 7, showing the alkaline nature of river water. Dissolved oxygen increased slightly at site 2 and then decreased markedly to 0 at site 10. As the river passes through the Delhi metropolitan city, the pollution load increases from various sources (both point and nonpoint). During the post-monsoon period, there are slight changes in the water quality of the river water due to dilution. With the impending climate change and its impact on the Himalyan river system, the long-term runoff is expected to decrease, whereas short-term flooding will pose more challenges for water quality in terms of increasing concentration of pollutants.

We report on the results of the investigation of optical properties and structure of PECVD deposited thin films of hydrogenated polysilicon determined by UV–Vis and IR spectroscopy. The influence of the hydrogen dilution of silane plasma at the PEVCD deposition on the film properties was investigated. The refractive index, the optical band gap energy and the microstructure of hydrogen and oxygen were analysed. The changes are discussed and correlated with the structure, the changes of the surface morphology and the hydrogen to silicon bonding. The optical band gap becomes larger than that of the undiluted sample. The results show that at dilution between 20 and 30 the transition between amorphous and crystalline phase occurs and the sample becomes a mixture of amorphous, polycrystalline phase with nano-sized grains and voids with decreasing hydrogen concentration. The presence of interstitial oxygen and oxygen bonded in surface Si–OH groups was detected.
