Disaster Awareness

Definition/Description
Disasters are defined as events that can originate
from both nature and humans although the line
between the two can blur, producing “unnatural”
disasters (Bates 2002). Geological, hydrological,
and atmospheric disasters such as earthquakes,
volcanic eruptions, landslides, rocks falling, avalanches,
drought, flooding, storms, lightning
strikes, and hurricanes are considered to be natural
disasters (Adeniran 2013). Environmental disasters
are man-made, anthropogenic ones; it means
that they are caused by human activity. Human
activity can change the environment abruptly or
gradually (Bates 2002). Environmental disasters
affect agriculture, biodiversity, the economy, and
human health. Unnatural disasters are result from
an interaction of natural and anthropogenic disruptions
in the environment. According to
Jacobson (1988, p. 16), they are “normal events
whose effects are exacerbated by human activities.”
Technological disasters are entirely anthropogenic,
but like natural disasters, they are
temporally acute (Bates 2002). Environmental pollution
or depletion can produce also the anthropogenic
deterioration of an ecosystem (Schnaiberg
and Gould 1994).

This study assessed the level of disaster awareness and preparedness of Saint Michael Academy students, teachers, and administrators. The objectives included are to determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of sex and grade level or position of the personnel, to determine the disaster awareness and preparedness level in terms of disaster-related knowledge, disaster preparedness and readiness, disaster adaption and disaster awareness, and find out the level of disaster awareness and preparedness of the students, teachers, and administrators.
    The research used quantitative and descriptive survey research design to analyze the variables of the study.
    The respondents of the study are the 276 students, 28 teachers and 3 administrators, this was determined using Slovin’s formula and simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires sent through google for students and a self-administered questionnaire for the teachers and administrators.
      The research has established that the students, teachers, and administrators of Saint Michael Academy is disaster aware and prepared. However, the institution needs to educate the students and the personnel on the disaster practices in order to avoid or lessen the damages that the disaster may cause. The study suggested to hardwire Disaster Risk Reduction not only to Senior High STEM students but also to all grade levels.

In Turkey, guidance on what to do during an earthquake is provided to individuals as a part of community disaster training programs. Two approaches have prevailed in this regard since the 1999 Marmara earthquakes and persisted in social memory. The first of these recommends taking cover under or near an object presumed as solid, holding on to the object if possible and protecting one’s head, face and vital organs while waiting for the shaking to end. The second approach anticipates laying in the fetal position on the floor beside an object considered as solid and waiting for the tremors to stop. Since 1999, both approaches have been propagated as pseudo-scientific discourses by various institutions. However, no reliable scientific research has been conducted on the validity of these approaches so far. Nevertheless, those adopting one of these methods and arguing the other’s ineffectiveness have taken the debate on this issue to the public arena. This paper aims to evaluate both approaches with a critical eye and to emphasize social dimension of disaster preparedness and vulnerability through this evaluation.

Ülkemizde uygulanan toplum afet bilinçlendirme programlarının bir parçası olarak, deprem anında bireylerin nasıl davranmaları gerektiğine ilişkin tavsiyeler verilmektedir. Bu konuda 1999 Marmara depremlerinden bu yana Türkiye’de yaygınlaşmış ve toplumsal bellekte yer etmiş iki yaklaşım vardır. Bunlardan birincisi sağlam olduğu varsayılan bir eşyanın altına girerek başı, yüzü ve yaşamsal organları korumak, mümkünse bu eşyaya tutunarak sarsıntıların geçmesini beklemeyi önermektedir. İkinci yaklaşım, sağlam olduğu varsayılan bir eşyanın yanına yattıktan sonra “ana rahmi / cenin” duruşu alarak sarsıntıların bitmesini beklemeyi öngörmektedir. İki yaklaşım da birer sözde-bilimsel söylem haline gelmiş olarak çeşitli kurumlarca desteklenmekte ve yaygınlaştırılmaya çalışılmaktadır. Oysa her ikisinin de etkinliği üzerine gerçekleştirilmiş hiçbir güvenilir bilimsel çalışma mevcut değildir. Buna rağmen, birinci ya da ikinci yaklaşımı benimseyenler, “diğer yaklaşımın hatalı olduğunu” iddia ederek kamusal alanda tartışabilmektedirler. Bu makalede söz konusu iki yaklaşım da eleştirel bir gözle değerlendirilecek ve bu değerlendirme üzerinden afete hazırlığın toplumsal boyutu ve zarar görebilirlik üzerinde durulacaktır.

Infographics is one of the recently utilized information, education and communication material in disasters. As there have been an increasing number of sudden volcanic eruptions and their hazardous impacts on people, this research aims to explore infographics as an awareness tool for mitigation of sudden volcanic eruptions. Comparison of pre-and post-test show the significant improvement of scores of test-takers after reading the infographics on the science of sudden eruptions, statistics of events, risks and mitigation practices.

The main purpose of this study is to develop a disaster awareness scale to determine the disaster consciousness of teacher candidates. The study group consisted of 820 preservice teacher who studied in different departments of Kırşehir Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Faculty of Education in the 2016-2017 academic year. Of the pre-service teachers in the sample, 74.3% were female, and 25.7% were male. The initial state of the scale created after the scanning of the relevant literature consisted of 50 items. As a result of expert opinions, the number of items was reduced to 46 and applied to the working group. An exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine the validity of the scale, and item factor total correlations and substance discrimination values were calculated. The internal consistency level and stability levels were calculated in order to determine the reliability of the scale. This left 46 items, but the factor loads of 10 items were below 0.30. The main purpose of this study is to develop a disaster awareness scale to determine the disaster consciousness of teacher candidates. The study group consisted of 820 preservice teacher who studied in different departments of Kırşehir Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Faculty of Education in the 2016-2017 academic year. Of the pre-service teachers in the sample, 74.3% were female, and 25.7% were male. The initial state of the scale created after the scanning of the relevant literature consisted of 50 items. As a result of expert opinions, the number of items was reduced to 46 and applied to the working group. An exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine the validity of the scale, and item factor total correlations and substance discrimination values were calculated. The internal consistency level and stability levels were calculated in order to determine the reliability of the scale. This left 46 items, but the factor loads of 10 items were below 0.30. Thus, they were removed from the scale. As a result, the final scale has a total of 36 items, of which 27 are positive and 9 are negative; and consists of 4 dimensions, called " disaster education awareness " , " pre-disaster awareness " , " false disaster awareness " and " post-disaster awareness. " As a result of the analyses made, it was determined that the scale is valid and reliable and can be used to determine disaster awareness levels.

Flood is the most common natural disaster in Sri Lanka that causes a huge destruction annually [1]. Lack of awareness on flood among the public is one of the main reasons behind the huge destruction of lives and property.We have proposed a platform for flood awareness, named "Flood Run" which is an interactive 3D mobile game, with following modules: puzzle games, action games and memorizing games, adventure games and quizzes. These four modules consist of activities to develop the essential skills to improve flood awareness. This research used game-based learning and interactive game designing techniques. This research paper presents the performance evaluation of the four types of modules. The results show that, with the help of the provided solution, the expected skills of the people are improved, and through that flood awareness among public is improved.

(In English) We did socialization for private sector of Hotels and Restaurants on post disaster of tsunami which hit the west coast of Banten province at December 22, 2018. This disaster claimed 296 lives, 675 injuries, and 3 missing people. BMKG formed socialization team on post disaster in aim to normally public condition, sharing the skill and knowledge, and explained the history of earthquake and tsunami disasters in Banten. It was strongly needed by impacted private sector, west part of Banten coastal zone need to be concerned in the future on planning, also developing resources of disaster prevention, mitigation, and preparedness.

(In Bahasa) Kami melakukan Sosialisasi pada sektor usaha Hotel dan Restoran pasca bencana Tsunami yang menerjang pantai bagian barat provinsi Banten tanggal 22 Desember 2018. Bencana ini menelan korban jiwa sebanyak 296 orang, korban luka-luka sebanyak 675 orang, dan korban hilang sebanyak 3 orang. BMKG membentuk tim sosialisasi lapangan pasca bencana yang bertujuan untuk menenangkan masyarakat,berbagi pengetahuan dan keterampilan, dan menjelaskan sejarah gempabumi dan tsunami di Banten. Sosialisasi ini sangat dibutuhkan oleh sektor usaha, dan wilayah pantai Barat Provinsi Banten perlu mendapat perhatian serius dalam perencanaan, juga pembangunan sumber daya pencegahan, mitigasi, dan kesiapsiagaan bencana.
