Early Mining

This study provides the first evidence for the extraction of lead in the later early medieval period in Lancashire, in the North West of England. Archaeological evidence for human activity in the region during the later medieval period is modest, although the material culture that is known supports the historic accounts of settlement by people of Scandinavian origin, which is reinforced by studies of place names and local dialect. Investigation of two upland sites in the western Pennines, on Anglezarke and Rivington moors, indicates that lead was being extracted in the period c.680-1000 cal.AD, most likely from known veins at Lead Mines Clough. The emergence of extractive activity coincides with contact with the Norse who are known from both historic and archaeological evidence to have been present in Lancashire during the later early medieval period.

This paper examines the debate concerning the spread
of early copper mining and metallurgy in Europe, in terms
both of the a priori premises of the scholars concerned
and of the actual archaeological evidence. It discusses
the development of the diffusionist paradigm exemplified
by Childe and Wertime, who argued for a single origin
for metallurgical knowledge and practice in the Near
East, and the challenge from Renfrew’s model of multiple
centres of development of copper metallurgy (the
Near East, the Balkans and Iberia). Specifically, it critiques
the neo-diffusionist model recently proposed by
Roberts, Thornton and Pigott (2009), who argue that
metallurgy developed in a single region, in the area of
eastern Anatolia and northern Iraq, from whence it diffused
to other areas.
It is shown that whether or not one agrees with the
premises of the argument put forward by Roberts et al.
(2009), the single origin diffusionist model for copper
metallurgy is unproven on the basis of the available evidence.
For example, copper smelting first appears in
the Balkans (Belovode, Serbia – 5000-4650 cal BC),
Iberia (Cerro Virtud, Almería – 4910-4460 cal BC) and
southeastern Iran (Tal-i Iblis – second half of the 6th /
first half of the 5th millennium cal BC) rather than in
Anatolia or northern Iraq.
The paper also examines the evidence for the earliest
copper mining and metallurgy in Italy and southern
France in the light of this debate, arguing that the pattern
shown by the evidence does not support a simple diffusion
from East to West.
A new model is proposed which posits that information
flowed throughout Eurasia, and that different technological
developments may in fact have first emerged in different
areas.

Накопление источников, связанных с металлопроизводством, из раскопок памятников позднебронзового века Картамышского археологического микрорайона в Донбассе остро ставит проблему назначения костяных орудий в этой отрасли. До настоящего времени из-за сходства ребер-заготовок их относили либо к кожевенным, либо к рудодобывающим. С целью определения их функции трасологическим методом были проанализированы три группы орудий: 1) из ребер; 2) пластинчатых костей (лопаток, нижних челюстей) и 3) длинных трубчатых костей. Исследование следов сработанности на них показало, что они могли образоваться от действия на кость мелкодисперсного материала и от трения орудия об мягкий материал (шкура, кожа). Подчеркнем, что экспериментальное исследование таких орудий, в частности из ребер, показало абсолютную неэффективность использования их как копалок в добыче руды, а также в процессе измельчения кусочков руды в воде на коже. Однако сравнение следов сработанности на экспериментальных орудиях из кости и древних показало, что они использовались для размешивания в процессе гравитационного (водного) обогащения медной руды.

Abstract
The assemblage of sources related with metal production from the excavations at the Late Bronze Age sites in Kartamysh archaeological micro region in Donbas poses critically the problem of the purpose of bone tools in this field. Because of similarity between the half-finished ribs they were referred either to tanning, or to extraction of ore industries. In order to determine their functions based on trasological method, three groups of tools were analysed: 1) made of ribs; 2) of flat bones (scapulas, lower jaws), and 3) of long bones. Study of worn traces on them showed that they could appear after fine material impact and after tool’s friction upon a soft material (skin, leather). It is emphasized that an experimental research of such tools, for instance made of ribs, showed their absolute ineffectiveness as diggers for ore extraction, as well as in process of reducing the ore pieces to fragments in water on the skin. However, comparison of worn traces on experimental and ancient bone tools showed that they were used for mixing in the process of copper ore gravity (water) separation.

It has long been assumed that the prehistoric inhabitants of Australia had always shunned caves, but recent evidence indicates that Pleistocene man made extensive use of deep limestone caves in that continent. Nearly all the Australian sites known to possess such evidence have only been discovered since 1980. The parietal traces of human use described in this paper include three different forms of rock art, the oldest of which is sometimes found together with extensive evidence of chert mining. The subterranean mining of sedimentary silica represents the world's oldest known traces of systematic mining in dark places.

Резюме. Археологические источники свидетельствуют, что в тех или иных сообществах могли быть сосредоточены как все технологические процессы металлопроизводства, так и лишь отдельные из них (добыча, обогащение руды, металлургия и металлообработка). В качестве объектов изучения выступают, прежде всего, металлические изделия, различные категории орудий труда, а также древние рудники, которые представляют собой разновидность следов - видоизменений естественной структуры геологических напластований и ландшафта. Долгое время внимание исследователей было направлено преимущественно на изучение металлических изделий и литейных форм. Орудия попадали в поле зрения в зависимости от археологического контекста, указывающего на возможность их соотнесения с металлопроизводством. Ситуация изменилась с появлением методики, выявляющей и объясняющей характер и природу деформаций изготовления и изнашивания. Исследование включает систематизацию материалов из горных пород, кости и керамики из Картамышского археологического микрорайона в Донбассе БМСК позднебронзового века. Источниковая база составляет 1091 предмет. Для их изучения применены структурно-сырьевой, технологический, функциональный и контекстуальный анализы. Наиболее представительная серия металлопроизводственных орудий: горнодобывающие (мотыги, кайла, молоты) (рис. 1: 4-11), горно-обогатительные (песты-терочники, рудодробильные/рудотерочные плиты, орудия из кости, применяемые в процессе гравитации, совки), металлообрабатывающие (литейные формы, молотки, наковальни, абразивы, скребок) (рис. 2: 4-19). Выделен новый тип орудий из кости для гравитационного обогащения руды (рис. 3: 1-10). Следы на артефактах идентичны полученным в ходе экспериментов по сухому обогащению руды, гравитации и металлообработке следам.

Abstract. The paper reports on the studies of metalworking tools from the Kartamysh archaeological microregion. Archaeological sources demonstrate that both the complete production cycle (extraction, ore processing, metallurgy and metalworking) and the incomplete production cycle could be used by various communities. Metal goods, various types of tools, ancient pits were examined. The latter are represented by a variety of traces such as changes of the natural structure of the geological depositions and the landscape. The research includes systematization of the artifacts made from rocks, bone and ceramics from the Kartamysh archaeological microregion in Donbass (Berezhnovka-Maevka Timber-grave culture of the Late Bronze Age). The collection consisting of 1091 items was subjected to the structural/raw material, technological, functional and contextual analyses. The paper publishes a series of metal production tools such as mining tools (mattocks, hacks, hammers – Fig. 1: 4–11), ore processing tools (pestles/grinding stones, mortars/grinding slabs), metalworking instruments (moulds, hammers, anvils, abrasives, a scraper) (Fig. 2: 4–19). Bone tools for gravitational ore processing were singled out (Fig. 3: 1–10). Traces on the artifacts were compared with the traces obtained during experiments on dry ore processing, gravitation and metalworking.
