El presente artículo resume los objetivos y principales resultados de la investigación que desarrollamos en nuestra tesis doctoral, Estudio de la mujer a través de los epitafios. Rituales y honores funerarios en la Colonia Tárraco. En ella nos propusimos hacer una revisión de las inscripciones funerarias que recibieron las mujeres de la Tarragona
romana y el "ager tarraconensis", ofreciendo un detallado análisis del patrón de conmemoración fúnebre en el ámbito femenino.

On 2012, two of the authors conducted research in the amphora collection of the National Museum of Roman Art (Museo Nacional de Arte Romano/MNAR) in Mérida (Spain). Their attention was attracted by one of the museum's finds. It was an almost complete Beltrán 72 amphora, the fabric of which showed its production place to have been within the Cadiz Bay area (Spain). It bore a red-ink inscription on the neck and upper part of the body. Taking a good graphic copy of the inscription, the authors discussed it with several epigraphic and linguistic specialists, arriving at the conclusion that it was written using two alphabets, a Semitic one for the two upper lines, and Latin for the lowest one.

Because of this exceptional piece, already presented to the general public in the exhibition catalogue Ars Scribendi (Almeida 2014), the authors decided to conduct a closer examination of this amphora typology, Hebrew inscriptions found on amphorae and known to them, and to establish the context of this find within the important Roman and late antique Jewish community of Augusta Emerita and the Iberian Peninsula

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo analiza un aspecto concreto de los epitafios latinos de la Hispania Citerior: los epítetos calificativos aplicados a la esposa. Su diferente contenido semántico y diversidad de aplicación en función de la condición social y económica de la mujer, revela la existencia de una consideración diferente de la esposa ingenua, serva, liberta o peregrina.
ABSTRACT: The present work studies a concrete aspect of the Latin epitaphs of Hispania Citerior: the epithets fiven to the wife. Their different semantic con‐ tent and diversity in applications for social and economic status of women, reveals a different account of the wife ingenua, serva, liberta o peregrina.

González en su catálogo ocho años posterior CILA 3 (La Vega-Itálica), Sevilla, 1991 (aunque en su Introducción, pp. 5-7, no explicita la existencia y la entidad de una catalogación anterior, de idéntico tema, y de la que a continuación hace tanto uso). 42 de las inscripciones, inéditas o de mayor interés, fueron recogidas en Hispania Epigraphica 1, 1989, nos. 528-570: http://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/HIEP/article/view/HIEP8989110017A/30585, y otras en números posteriores.
- Es la primera catalogación moderna y estudio detenido del rico conjunto epigráfico de la ciudad, con múltiples nuevas lecturas e interpretaciones. Aunque, por problemas personales, no pude incluir las 430 inscripciones que tenía fichadas y realmente lo hubieran debido componer, aunque sí están todas las principales. Tiene un estudio cronológico y seriación según la paleografía, además de conclusiones históricas, arqueológicas y urbanísticas, sobre todo la 'vetus urbs' ortogonal bajo Santiponce (vid. plano doble al final), un descubrimiento de última hora que desarrollé más completo poco después, incluyendo la colonia latina inicial o las causas estratégicas de la fundación, más en relación con su puerto (antes casi siempre negado) y con la minería a embarcar desde Riotinto y su zona  (cf. «Die Vetus Urbs von Italica. Probleme ihrer Gründung und ihrer Anlage», Madrider Mitteilungen 26, 1989, págs. 137-148 https://www.academia.edu/1159122/Die_vetus_urbs_von_Italica_Probleme_ihrer_Gr%C3%BCndung_und_ihrer_Anlage_1985_). De particular relieve es el estudio hecho sobre las inscripciones honoríficas y legales, en especial las más de 50 páginas dedicadas al llamado "Bronce de Itálica" o (male) "Lex Gladiatoria", con nuevas lecturas e interpretaciones [pp. 539-592], la lectura y datación en el primer decenio del siglo II d.C. (lo que concuerda con la estratigrafía de M. Pellicer) de la gran inscripción de la 'orchestra' del teatro, allí mismo la atribución a Licinio Sura, cos.III, de una láurea pintada (hoy ya prácticamente perdida) de su pulpitum; la atribución a L. Emilio Paulo (post 168 a.C.) del supuesto 'titulus Mummianus' italicense (propuesta aceptada de inmediato, en 1986 por H. Krummrey en CIL I/2-4, nº 630, quien lo eliminó de la serie de Mumio), la probable existencia de unos Traii italicense (confirmada al año siguiente mediante el famoso mosaico de M. Trahius), la existencia de un templum divi Traiani, etc. Cierra un capítulo de conclusiones, muchas de ellas inéditas y de interés, y a continuación unos amplios índices de 60 páginas que permiten un amplio uso de lo tratado en ambos tomos.

En este libro se realiza un estudio topográfico de Talavera de la Reina, la antigua Caesarobriga, en época romana, así como una recopilación de los descubrimientos arqueológicos de las últimas décadas. Se recopilan los restos epigráficos de la ciudad y se realiza un pequeño estudio sobre la sociedad caesorobrigense. Finalmente se analiza el territorio y las calzadas que comunicaban la ciudad. En esta edición se añaden dos anexos, uno de ellos con el estudio numismático de Ronda del Cañillo 16, y otro con un conjunto inédito de terra sigillata procedente de diversos lugares de la ciudad.

This book contain a topographical study of Talavera de la Reina, the former Caesarobriga, in Roman times, as well as a collection of the archaeological discoveries of recent decades. Epigraphic remains are also studied and small synthesis of caesorobrigense society. Finally we analyze the territory and roads that connected the city. This edition adds two annexes, one with the numismatic study of Ronde del Cañillo, and another with an inedited group of terra sigillata from various places in the city.

This article examines children's cognomina in the inscriptions of Roman Hispania that are derived from the name of the mother. Seven naming patterns are identified and documented with epigraphic examples. These include names that are formed from the mother's cognomen, with or without a suffix, names formed from the mother's nomen gentilicium, and cognomina that are cognate with the mother's name.

It would appear that a Museum is the best place to get rid of things and completely forget them. This paper retrieves, as far as it is known, the provenience and other circumstances of six latin epigraphs (four from Rome and two for Spain), now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional of Madrid.

Dá-se a conhecer o fragmento de um terminus augustalis, cuja reconstituição completa se propõe. Ignoram-se, por enquanto, os povos que delimitaria, mas relaciona-se com outros dois, identificados nas proximidades e que se incluem na política organizativa peninsular do imperador Cláudio. Data do ano 43.

The presence of the Roman tribus as part of the nomenclature in a provincial context provides us with a clearer approach to the process of integration of the local elites into the  populus Romanus and to their participation in the practices of the public self-representation of Latin epigraphic culture. By analysing the epigraphic contexts in which the  tribus Quirina appears in  Hispania citerior we can see that it is mainly used in honorary inscriptions, but also in a similar number of funerary inscriptions, especially those found on supports which could have formed part of major funerary monuments, being notably visible and aimed at publicity and social prestige.

This paper analyses the epigraphic itineraries undertaken through the western fields of Lisbon in the first half of the 16th century, as inferred from the Anonymus Neapolitanus and the Codex Valentinus, attempting to clarify questions of authorship , chronology and context. The main 'antiquarian spots' by then discovered and idealized in the vicinity of Lisbon are defined and described, in particular the sanctuary consecrated to the Sun and the Moon at the mouth of the river of Colares and the stone collection of the chapel of São Miguel de Odrinhas, both in the region of Sintra.

Fue un artículo de mucho impacto en su momento, ya que por primera vez se reunió la casi totalidad de la bibliografía sobre Epigrafía hispanorromana existente o producida entre 1971 y 1991, desde corpora hasta artículos particulares, ordenada por tipos, temas y fechas.
Aquellos habían sido en efecto 20 años capitales en el definitivo arranque en España de la Epigrafía como ciencia histórica, lo que a mi juicio tenía mucho que ver (aunque no se reconociera abiertamente) con la modesta y con errores, pero muy útil recopilación de inscripciones, ILER, que había sido publicada por el Padre Vives en 1972.
La importancia estratégica del artículo se vio reconocida por la rareza y honor de que, no siendo una monografía, el prestigioso Prof. Giancarlo Susini (Univ. de Bolonia) lo hiciera objeto de una elogiosa recensión en la reconocida revista italiana que él creó y dirigía, "Epigraphica" (agora en https://www.academia.edu/45111554/Giancarlo_Susini_Epigraphica_LIV_1992_Rese%C3%B1a_art_A_M_Canto_Un_veintenio_clave_para_la_Epigraf%C3%ADa_Latina_de_Espa%C3%B1a_1991_ ).

Los dendrogramas o mapas de relaciones epigráficas (MRE) son un muevo sistema de organización de los sellos anfóricos olearios béticos (Dressel 20, ca. 30-270 d.C.) en forma de diagrama de árbol que presenta cuatro niveles de clasificación:
Familia → Estructura → Lectura → Matriz.
Se trata de una nueva herramienta de estudio eminentemente gráfica y epigráficamente lógica, que despliega en una sola imagen todos los elementos que necesitamos conocer para extraer de los sellos todo su potencial informativo. Con esta visión de conjunto, estaremos en condiciones de plantear hipótesis para reconstruir los esquemas organizativos de los talleres y su evolución en el tiempo. Se aplica a una familia o al conjunto de las familias de sellos de un centro productor.
Además del dendrograma (MRE) de los sellos conocidos en el centro productor, se incluye la localización y descripción del yacimiento estudiado y una explicación general de la elaboración de estos dendrogramas (MRE).

The main aim of this book is to explore the active role that many prehistoric monuments, including rock art sites, played in social life during the 1st millennium BC and the 1st millennium AD on the basis on a wide thematic, chronological and geographic coverage. Although this book adopts a broad and inclusive theoretical approach,from a methodological point of view it draws inspiration from the biographical approach to the study of material culture (e.g. Kopytoff 1986; Gosden and Marshall 1999; Hoskins 2006). This approach has already been applied for some time by Anglo-American archaeologists,proving to be a useful framework within which to consider the active role of monuments and landscapes in social life (Chippindale 1987; Feld and Basso 1996, Bender 1998; Bradley and Williams 1998; Knapp and Ashmore 1999; Bradley 2000; Holtorf 2000–8; Bradley 2002; Gillings and Pollard 2004; Jones 2007; Rainbird 2008, Rubertone 2008; Parker 2009; Reneset al. 2013). It has, however, been far less widely explored by archaeologists belonging to other academic traditions in the broader context of European and Mediterranean prehistory. Therefore, a key contribution of this book is that authors from different academic traditions take a fresh look at this approach through different case studies and a range of different theoretical standpoints, enriching our view of the variety of archaeologies that are currently being made in different regions of Europe. In terms of chronological and geographic coverage, then, this volume transcends traditional period and place constraints. Case studies include later prehistoricand Roman periods, and follow the trajectories of monuments into the Medieval and even Modern periods of history, from Scandinavia to Tunisia, and from the British Isles to the Balkans. The chronology of each of these broad time periods varies, of course,from region to region and some do not even exist in some areas:this is the case of Ireland, which was beyond the frontiers of the Roman Empireand for which no ‘Roman period’ as such is formally defined.

The A. focus the inscription in Lusitanian language recently found in Arronches (Portugal). From a direct analysis of the stela, he reviews its reading, presenting a new interpretation. This one considers that theonimic designations precede those of the sacrificial animals – and not the opposite. The A. concludes that the invocative text is organized as followed: (a) a consecration to a “triform” goddess who receives three animals; (b) a “trifunctional” textual block devoted to three deities, culminating with Reva who receives tauro ifate; (c) a textual block devoted to Bandi and Munitie, the two main tutelary deities of the Galaico-Lusitanian area. Then, it follows the complementary text, which contains the personal names and the generic designation of the cultores – ougurani – as well as references to the ritualistic circumstances.

There is a rather dense network of Roman (indicated) amphitheatres in the Eastern Adriatic seaboard which testify to the civilizational level of individual Roman cities. However, a relatively small number of these Roman cities have been archeologically researched, and among them there is an even smaller number of preserved structures that inherited these inscriptions, which directly pertains to the aforementioned Roman amphitheatres.* Therefore, this work shall only encompass those epigraphic monuments which testified to public construction
in the deep past, based on the example of Eastern Adriatic Roman
amphitheatres (inscriptiones publicae). This epigraphic material has been thematically and topographically classified according to the relevant archaeological sites. This material will also be of exceptional importance to the chronological attribution of certain amphitheatre in the Eastern Adriatic seaboard. Nevertheless, indicated amphitheatres such as those in the Roman colonies of Iader and Aequum and the legion camp Tilurium will not be considered in this work, since there is no entirely firm basis for a precise dating of the structures because they are under-researched.** According to the data available to this author, thus far no inscriptions have been found in the area of the Pola amphitheatre from the era of Roman rule that would speak
to the architectural aspect of this structure.

Recolhem-se testemunhos de autores latinos do uso da palavra hiems, a que se atribui tanto o sentido próprio, de estação do ano, como o figurado, de «adversidades, tormentas».
Do ponto de vista epigráfico, referem-se exemplos da legenda Hiems nos mosaicos das estações patentes em villae romanas (com especial destaque para o da villa de Ilunum) e recordam-se duas ocorrências em textos epigráficos propriamente ditos, as únicas conhecidas até ao momento: a do carmen epigraphicumn de Mértola (IRCP 98) e a do pedestal de uma possível villa de Sétif (CIL VIII 8513), aqui pela primeira vez analisado nesse contexto. Alude-se também à eventual ocorrência da palavra num texto rupestre da Cueva Negra.

In the 1980s, at Encinasola, Huelva, three inscribed sling bullets were discovered. They bore the praenomen and the nomen of Quintus Sertorius, the commander who led a revolt in Hispania against the Sullan regime in the 70s B.C., accompanied by the term proco(n)s(ul). Following other authors, in this article I will defend the view that Sertorius possessed a proconsular imperium as ex-praetor of the Cinnan government prior to the Sullan dictatorship, and that Sertorius was appointed magistrate of the two provinces of Hispania, and not only of the Citerior as has been held on occasion. Finally, I will explain how the legitimising message that the Sertorian side projected through the epigraphical field was based on the idea that its leader, in spite of the proscription decreed by Sulla, was the legitimate magistrate of the provinces Ulterior and Citerior.

La gran potencia estratigráfica constatada en los sondeos
para el trazado de un gasoducto; la abundancia de material arqueológico en superficie; la existencia de numerosos sillares, elementos
de columnas y restos de estructuras por los alrededores,
las noticias sobre una necrópolis y la existencia de
epigrafía funeraria en las proximidades hacen pensar
en un núcleo de cierta entidad en La Campaneta en término de  Villajoyosa (Alicante, España), estructurado
probablemente en torno a una rica villa rural,
como otros vici de la comarca de la Marina Baixa. No obstante, es muy
probable que los sillares hasta ahora conocidos como
«monumento de l’Almiserá», partes de dos zócalos de
pedestal moldurados, procedan del interior del recinto
funerario de la torre funeraria altoimperial de Sant Josep, donde pudieron formar parte de dos pedestales de los que se conservan
junto a la torre cuatro grandes fragmentos de cornisa.
Respecto a la inscripción de Lucio Terencio Mancino,
conservada durante siglos en la fachada de la
casa de l’Almiserà, tenemos pocas dudas sobre su
pertenencia a la torre, y por tanto nos informaría del
nombre del difunto allí enterrado, lo que supondría un
hito insospechado en nuestro conocimiento de uno de
los monumentos funerarios más relevantes conservados
en la Península Ibérica.

Este artículo es el repaso de una “duda razonable” (y razonada) sobre el origen de la ciudad romana de «EMERITA» (Mérida, Extremadura): ¿«IULIA» o «AUGUSTA»?; una introducción a un viejo debate sobre su fundación que inició la Doctora Alicia María Canto (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) en 1987. Desde entonces ha venido aportando múltiples pruebas sobre el posible protagonismo de Julio César en los orígenes de Mérida (la mayor parte no rebatidas por la postura académica a favor de Augusto). Por otro lado, intentando comprender su “nacencia”, advertimos el contexto viario que determinó su origen: una ciudad-puente como “consecuencia” (que no “arranque”) del «Camino de la Plata», un ancestral eje viario que facilitaba la rápida comunicación (comercial, militar, administrativa…) entre los extremos sur-norte del occidente peninsular. Ello fue gracias a una suerte de condicionantes físicos: un vado del Río Guadiana (que controlaba y del que se beneficiaba) integrado en una alineación aquí de pasos naturales (vados y puertos de montaña). Este estratégico itinerario fue clave en los inicios de la ocupación romana en las Guerras Lusitanas, antes y durante la reiterada presencia de Julio César en el occidente de «Hispania». Por tanto, la “teoría Iulia” de Alicia M. Canto no es descabellada (frente a la "teoría Augusta", más asentada), si atendemos a las pruebas que aporta, y al singular y privilegiado marco histórico-viario del enclave de «Emerita».

This paper tackles the analysis of a series of cases of reutilisation in Roman times of prehistoric sacred spaces and monuments, recorded throughout the South of the Iberian Peninsula. The cases under study are grouped in three main categories: (i) spatial proximity or overlapping of prehistoric and Roman burial areas, (ii) reutilisation of the inner and outer spaces of prehistoric mortuary chambers, and (iii) re-use of rock art sanctuaries and prehistoric stelae. As a conclusion, we suggest, firstly, the need to reconsider the recording criteria by which the appearance of later materials in old monuments is archaeologically assessed; secondly, we point out the need to look at these cases from the viewpoint of the elements of tradition and memory that some old sacred sites convey for the Iberian-Roman populations. Finally, we suggest these cases must be interpreted in terms of religious and political ideology.
