In early January 1997, I was standing outside a corner tienda [shop], in my Mexico City neighborhood of Colonia Santo Domingo, sipping Coronas with my friends Marcelo and Marcial to celebrate the New Year. A third friend, Marcos, who lived next door to the tienda, stopped by. Having just been on a family vacation to Yucatan and taken a forty-eight-hour bus ride to return to Mexico City, he was tanned and exhausted, and he couldn’t wait to tell us, especially Marcial who was originally from Yucatan, about the trip. The traditional institution of the family within Roman Catholic Christianity and Christianity in general is in an invidious position in contemporary society, partly because it lacks an agreed definition in a fluid global context. The church is an institution in which families subsist and which both needs and bolsters the family unit for its own existence and stability. However, all major churches seem to be stuck in outdated traditional modes of understanding which are exclusive and cause great distress to many who do not conform to them. The Roman Catholic Church has recently inaugurated a discussion of pastoral challenges currently facing family life. This is an attempt to evaluate critically its initial findings through deconstructing the traditional notion of family on which the Church teaching seems to rely.

The Mosaic approach has been used as a form of participatory research for over two decades. It has been popular with researchers in the early childhood education and disability sectors because it encourages the participants to utilise a large range of communication tools, rather than relying on verbal and written data. Promoters of the Mosaic approach generally place great importance on capturing children’s voices in response to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNICEF 2015), and the need to address the inequities of the child participant/researcher and the adult researcher. Furthermore, the findings should be passed on to those adults who make decisions that affect the children, thereby increasing children’s agency. While these are imperative components of the Mosaic approach, the authors argue that there are times when adults’ voices, such as parents, carers, practitioners and educators, can add to the richness and meaning of Mosaic data that the children have originally captured but are not understood by other adults, potentially adding weight to children’s voices when advocating to those who make decisions that affect children’s lives. Reflecting on the original framework for listening to children’s voices by Clark and Moss [2011. Listening to Children: The Mosaic Approach. London: National Children's Bureau], we adapted the model to suit a particular research context and project. Reflecting on and expanding the framework may be of interest to researchers and practitioners who work with the Mosaic Approach and who gather and promote marginalised voices.

Background: Accidents, such as domestic accidents, and the resulting injuries are presently a matter of concern in communities. Some factors such as urbanization cause an increase in the incidence of accidents for recognized and unrecognized reasons. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of domestic accidents among a group of families who had migrated to the determined urban aria (Rafsanjan County, Kerman Province, Iran) and compare the results with that of urban families in the last year.

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, we compared the 1-year incidence rate of domestic accidents among 115 families who had migrated to Rafsanjan County from rural areas and 100 families who had lived in Rafsanjan throughout their life. Data were collected during 3 years (2009-2012) using the study checklist during interview sessions. Families were recruited via urban health centers. All indoor accidents and injuries which were serious enough to require medical intervention were considered as domestic accidents. Data were analyzed in SPSS software using parametric and non-parametric tests.

Results: The mean age of injured individuals in migrated and urban families were 35.9 ± 18.7 and 30.7 ± 20.6, respectively. In addition, 22 cases of injuries were reported among urban families (1-year incidence rate = 220 cases per 1000 families) and 37 cases were reported among migrated families (1-year incidence rate = 322 cases per 1000 families). There was a significant difference between these incidence rates (P < 0.01).

Conclusions: Our finding showed that individuals who migrate to an urban area are at a higher risk of experiencing domestic accidents compared to those who are familiar with the urban lifestyle. This might be due to the novelty of the city lifestyle for those who have immigrated to the urban area from rural regions. More investigations are needed to shed more light on this phenomenon.

This paper describes the design process of the Location Based Mobile game (LBMG) KENARDUMA that tackles the problem of loneliness among Danish teenagers. This article demonstrates a research through design process. Research of the families everyday situation is drawn in to make a game that is relevant to the issue. Examination of design assumptions, ideologies and framing and reframing of the design situation allows for a versatile design process. Medienpraktiken in Familien vollziehen sich häufig zwischen Angehörigen unterschiedlicher Generationen. Ob Kinder und Eltern gemeinsam Fernsehen oder mit den Großeltern via WhatsApp kommunizieren, jede Interaktion schafft Möglichkeiten für wertvolle Medienbildungsmomente. Das Konzept der intergenerationellen Medienbildung gibt diesen Alltagspraxen einen theoretischen Rahmen, an dem sich medienpädagogische Angebote zielgerichtet orientieren können.

Der Artikel nähert sich dem Thema aus zweierlei Perspektiven. Zum einen schafft er eine theoretische Grundlage zum Konzept “intergenerationelle Medienbildung in Familien”, zum anderen stellt er das Praxisprojekt “Medienpädagogische Fortbildung für die sozialpädagogische Familienhilfe” der Aktion Jugendschutz Baden-Württemberg vor, in dessen Rahmen Familienworkshops angeboten werden.

Key messages The number of same-sex couple parented families in Australia is growing. Acceptance of the equality of same-sex couples is steadily increasing, and is strongest among women and young people. Children raised in same-sex parented families progress emotionally, socially and educationally at the same rate as other children. The biggest challenge faced by children raised in same-sex parented families is social stigma.

El documento busca situar la falta de acceso a servicios públicos de
atención al uso problemático de drogas y los retos que ello supone
para las familias que tienen a alguno de sus miembros atravesando
por esta condición. Para ello recurro al concepto de privatización de
cuidado, a través del cual se plantea cómo el uso problemático de
drogas es construido conceptual y políticamente como una falla
individual del carácter. La privatización del cuidado permite subrayar
cómo la reducción del estado de bienestar se ha traducido en el
campo del uso problemático de drogas en la ausencia de una
política pública de atención a esta situación y en la invisibilización de
los elementos estructurales que inciden en la conformación de
dinámicas de uso problemático de drogas.

La argumentación está sustentada en material etnográfico recogido con personas con uso problemático de drogas y sus familiares en Tijuana, Mexicali, Hermosillo y Ciudad Juárez entre 2007 y 2015. Se concluye
planteando la necesidad de reconocer los elementos estructurales
que inciden en el desarrollo de patrones problemáticos de uso de
drogas. Se subraya el papel del Estado como garante del bienestar
de los ciudadanos y por lo tanto su obligatoriedad de ofrecer
atención en su dimensión individual y colectiva al uso problemático
de drogas garantizando intervenciones de calidad, basadas en
evidencia y respetuosas de los Derechos Humanos, para proteger el
bienestar económico, social y emocional de las familias que
enfrentan esta situación.

ABSTRACT Background: Parents making a will most commonly distribute assets evenly to adult children. How parents of an adult child with an intellectual disability use wills to plan for future care and support has had limited policy, practice and research attention. Method: This research reports on the perceptions of 20 parents regarding the impact of the needs of their child with disability on estate planning. The participants were purposively recruited and interviewed during 2014–15. Results: Participants were more likely to consider equity of outcomes for their children taking into account retaining access to state services. They report difficulties in future planning in the context of changing service systems and limited specialised advice. Conclusions: Judgements about what is fair and reasonable in distributing assets reflect differing views of need and entitlement within families. Such families would benefit from specialised advice and support in estate planning, particularly given the changing context.

Estudio de la guarnición militar española en la Florida Oriental, fundamentalmente la ciudad de San Agustín y el castillo de San Marcos, a lo largo del S. XVIII, y durante los dos periodos, antes y después de 1763, cuando pasó a dominación británica, y tras su posterior devolución a la monarquía española en la década de los 80, hasta su incorporación a los Estados Unidos en la década de 1820. Study of the Spanish military garrison in East Florida, mainly the city of San Agustín and the castle of San Marcos, throughout the 18th century, and during the two periods, before and after 1763, when it came to domination British, and after its subsequent return to the Spanish monarchy in the 1980s, until its incorporation into the United States in the 1820s. Are analysed the social and geographical origins of this garrison (officers and soldiers), established families, domestic economies, salaries, payments, situated, relations with the authorities, relations with the island of Cuba.

This paper gives an account of the growing participation of women in the workforce especially in executive positions –as managers, officers, members of boards of directors and entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, and despite these great advances, significant inequalities still persist in the business world between men and women, especially in terms of domestic and family responsibilities. In order to develop this thesis, I will expose particular characteristics of the labor force and analyze the particular situation faced by working, managerial and entrepreneurial women in Mexico.

Employing a qualitative research approach known as Mosaic research, multiple methods of data collection are combined to gather various insights into children's experiences. Embracing an interpretivist epistemology, the researcher aims to create shared knowledges of children's understandings and experiences, progressively building insights into the child's experience and inviting discussions to take place about their experiences. The study found that young children's experiences of parental deployment included stressors, responses, adaptations and protective factors. Another major finding was that children's understandings of parental deployment were often underestimated by parents. Children's understandings were strongly influenced by time, place, acculturation, narrative, digital technology, cognitive development, adult reinforcement and the use of age and culturally appropriate resources. The central goal of Mosaic research 'is not to make children's knowledge unquestionable, but to raise it to such a level that children's knowledge about their lives is central to adult discussions' (Clark & Moss, 2011, p. 65). Such knowledge about children's understandings and experiences of deployment can inform effective support strategies for parents, educators and professionals who work with these children in the ADF and wider community.

Remittances play the role of second largest source of foreign export earnings to Sri Lanka where the 60% of this is from Middle East countries where the majority of domestic Sri Lankan workers are employed. With the main objective of calculating the Global Person Generated Index (GPGI) to identifying the impacts of remittances on the wellbeing of left behind families by migrants a field survey was carried out with 60 Sampath Bank remittance beneficiaries. They were selected from simple random sampling, whose migrants were under the unskilled and housemaid category at Wattala area, covering three GN divsions, Hekitta, Hadala, Hunupitiya. The data collection was done through a semi structured questionnaire as well as using secondary sources. It was found that the flow of remittances will increase in five years ahead but the remittance inflow from Middle East countries will be declined in an decreasing rate (-1.54). Results of the regression analysis shows that perception towards the act of migration depends on, gender (0.743), duration of migration (– 0.0551) and salary of the migrant (0.0227). Global Person Generated Index (GPGI) was used for the assessment of wellbeing of families left behind by the migrants. Results depicts that love, affection and family are the main concerning areas of the lives of migrant left behind families (accounting 23% and13% respectively) followed by several other factors. Further it also shows that they have still not reached the necessity levels with respect to the areas (obtaining minus values for GPGI) of family, children, debt settlement, employment and accommodation. As per the overall view whatever the peoples' perception towards the migrants and whatever notifications and respects we citizens are paying towards these migrants and not only that how far the government is happy/satisfied due to these enormous retrieval of remittances by recovering the BOPs, the actual owners of those remittances or their beloved family members are still struggling to find out the love, affection and money from remittances (as denoted by the minus value for the difference in ranking for the GPGI) as well as to be well or to reach the required necessity levels in certain other crucial areas of their lives.

The increasing number of children with autism increases the need for services for individuals who are adults with autism. In Turkiye, services in the field of education for people with autism are limited to public school programs. As a result, the goal of the study is to assess the challenges faced by families with children with autism during the post-secondary education process from the perspective of social work and to propose solutions based on social work principles. The phenomenological research design, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of families whose children with autism are over the age of 18 and have
completed compulsory education. By these criteria, interviews were conducted with a total of 16 families, 15 in Istanbul and 1 in Izmir. The findings of the interviews were collected with a semi-structured interview form and interpreted with descriptive analysis. This study revealed that
families with autistic children face many different problems during the post-compulsory education process such as staying at home, problems in finding and applying to institutions, the inadequacy of education, educators, and course hours in institutions and families are left alone, and they need various services and practices to solve these problems.

Having a preterm infant is a life-altering event for parents. The use of interventions intended to support the parents is recommended. In this study, we investigated how parents&#39; perceptions of physiotherapy in primary health care influenced their adaptation to caring for a preterm child. We conducted 17 interviews involving parents of seven infants, at infants&#39; corrected age (CA) 3, 6, and 12 months. The analysis was a systematic text condensation, connecting to theory of participatory sense-making. The parents described a progression toward a new normalcy in the setting of persistent uncertainty. Physiotherapists can ameliorate this uncertainty and support the parents&#39; progression toward normalization, by providing knowledge and acknowledging both the child as subject and the parent-child relationship. The impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on income is unclear. We sought to determine whether CKD severity, serious adverse events, and CKD progression affected household income. Analyses were undertaken in a prospective cohort of adults with moderate-to-severe CKD in the Study of Heart and Renal Protection (SHARP), with household income information available at baseline screening and study end. Logistic regressions, adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, and prior diseases at baseline, estimated associations during the 5-year follow-up, among (i) baseline CKD severity, (ii) incident nonfatal serious adverse events (vascular or cancer), and (iii) CKD treatment modality (predialysis, dialysis, or transplanted) at study end and the outcome &quot;fall into relative poverty.&quot; This was defined as household income &lt;50% of country median income. This study investigated the changes that occur in mothers’ language and interactions with their preschool-aged children who have language difficulties when a Spanish language-based intervention was provided within their homes. The intervention was provided using toys and routines that existed within their homes. Three Spanish speaking mothers of Mexican descent participated alongside their preschool children in a language-based intervention. The mothers were interviewed before and after the intervention to understand their experiences and perceptions. They were video recorded interacting with their children during play-based events to document language events between the mothers and their child. Study findings demonstrated that mothers changed in their use of language strategies and had positive opinions about the intervention. To build on culturally responsive interventions, specific factors were identified to promote a positive experience when working with Mexican immigrant mothers.

The article concerns the relationship between parenting and parental responsibility, recently placed at the center of a new cultural and scientific debate on the theme of families, rekindled both by the World Congress of Families of Verona and the presentation of the S/735 bill (Norme in materia di affido condiviso, mantenimento diretto e garanzia di bigenitorialità). According to a perspective of families educational reflection in a transactional approach, the contribution interprets the principle of parental responsibility focusing on the dimension of educational care and, therefore, of the practices through which it is exercised. In this sense, the paper connects parenting and learning in adulthood and presents the educational counseling as a valid tool to support the development and cultivation of a parental educational culture.

This Briefing summarises findings from the family-focussed strand of a
wider research programme exploring end of life care for people with
problematic substance use. The aims of the family-focussed research were
to:
1. Explore how families of people with alcohol/other drug problems
experience their relative’s end of life care;
2. Examine the extent to which services recognised or responded to the
family’s needs, and
3. Record the challenges and practice (both good and poor) that families
encountered in accessing formal and informal support, for themselves and for
their relative.

There is little South African research on gender and sexual minorities’ reproductive decision-making and, to date, no published work explicitly focused on gay men. Motivated by the virtual absence of gay men in research, as well as their marginalisation more generally, we undertook a qualitative investigation of gay men’s thoughts, feelings and perspectives of fatherhood, fatherhood decisions, and experiences of pathways to parenthood.  Framed by a reproductive justice perspective, the aim of the study was not only to generate new knowledge, but also to inform policy, services, and advocacy.  In this paper we present some of the findings from our discursive analysis of participants’ accounts of their own experiences of the pathway to parenthood or remaining ‘childfree’. We locate our analysis within the broader South African context and show how the entanglement of various social identity markers—particularly gender, race, and class—come to bear on participants’ experiences.

This article presents the game Junomi, a game designed to give families and teenagers opportunities to play with the way they communicate and also experience closeness and togetherness. Taking a research based approach and getting a detailed understanding of the situation to design for facilitated an investigation that helped seeing potentials for playful moments and spaces in the situation, as well as how the different elements and aspects of the situation could be made playable. Everyday communication is considered complex, heterogeneous and indefinable and the game does not, which models or simulate the complexity of the situation, but to create a frame that invites, suggests, reminds and encourage for a playful mind in the everyday and thereby gives possibilities for the families to, through play, explore and experiments with ways of communicating and ways of being together. The experience of the game depends largely on how the players choose to engage with the game.

A l’actualitat, l’antropologia del parentesc es troba davant del repte de trobar noves categories que incloguin formes familiars cada vegada més freqüents i variades. En aquest grup incloem les famílies que conviuen amb nens/es en acolliment familiar, especialment en aquells casos en què no existeix cap vincle de sang, és a dir, acolliments en família aliena. En aquests acolliments, les relacions no s’adeqüen ni a la teoria de la descendència, segons la qual el més important és la consanguinitat o la substància compartida (Radcliffe-Brown, 1974), ni a la de l’aliança, basada en el matrimoni (C. Levi-Strauss 1983). Així doncs, l’interrogant és saber quin tipus de relació s’estableix entre els pares i/o mares d’ acollida i els nens/es i quines teories permetrien d’avançar en la comprensió d’aquest procés a la vegada que aportarien un marc d’estudi en què contextualitzar-les.
