Families

Since the beginning of 2010s, the movement of unaccompanied minors from Eritrea has significantly increased and has become the object of international concern. This migration is often explained by media and humanitarian actors as the mechanical reaction to recent conscription campaigns by the Eritrean government. However, these explanations fail to consider that young people’s mobilities emerge from a context of protracted crisis. Building on the literature on chronicity and crisis in the African context, this article examines what it means to be young in Eritrea and how it relates to the motivations for and the dynamics of youth migration from the country. Drawing from a multi-sited ethnography in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan, the article points to the active role of young migrants – even minors – escaping from contexts of protracted crisis. While analysing the structural constraints faced by Eritrean girls and boys, I first show how migration in this context is often seen as a crucial step to reaching adulthood that has significant gender differences. Then, I explore the interactions between family expectations and individual agency by analysing my informants’ mobility patterns outside Eritrea and in secondary movements towards Europe. While most available literature tends to portray young migrants’ trajectories as the result of structural circumstances or family projects, I illustrate how many of my informants often undertook their journeys without family consensus to pursue personal aspirations as well as communal values regarding moral worthiness and family well-being.

Although provision of holidays for families in need has been mainstreamed within the social care policies of many countries in the rest of Europe, ‘social tourism’ has yet to be adopted in the United Kingdom. This article reports on a scoping study of research and policy in this area. While there is limited robust research on the impact of holidays, emerging evidence supports a range of claims for benefits to children and families. The article concludes that both political emphasis on social inclusion and pan-European initiatives on ‘Tourism For All’ currently provide an opportunity for the provision of holidays for families in need to be placed firmly on the social care agenda.

It is descriptive analysis.
On a Study of Concept and Process for the Promotion of Holistic Health in the Guideline of Buddhist Psychology. The research is found that the healthy concept of Buddhism is both learning such as a keyword ‘good health is the noble luck’ and belief in Kamma such as a phrase ‘a bad man, killer, un-compassion in animal beings, was born in unhappy existence, a bad area, any disabled state, hell. When he is rebirth, he is much disease, short age. In Vinaya, the Buddha legislates to prohibit a Buddhist monk from the cutting vegetation, from leaving of bad things in water. The Buddha legislates the Buddhist monk to clean one’s own residence, manage one’s own utensils as hygienic practice, to makes a cool and pleasant temple. In Dhamma, the Buddha gives Dhamma to indicate care mental health by meditation with loving kindness, good wishing well as the way of life. The Buddha indicates intellectual health by the development of intellect into the knowledge of noble truth, understanding in the law of the Three Characteristics. The Buddha indicates social health by welfare according to the communicated idea of Dhamma for the benefit and happiness of many people.
The holistic process of healthy reinforce of the Buddhist monk is in ๔ ways, namely;- the physical one, the example group is Hugmuannan. Its activities are afforestation, tree ordination, farmland production, community business, the campaign for drug resistance, to do conscience in homeland, respect in ancestors and maintaining of cultures. The mental one, the example group is meditation. Its activity is the meditation according to the way of Luangpoja. This is achievement for Thai people and aboard oversea people expanding the abroad many schools. The mental one, the example group is wat Panyanandaram. Its activities are the intellectual development by Buddha-butta camp, Buddha-dhamma camp, intellectual project as arm, the project of learning of Dhamma and moral skill. The social one, the example group is wat Prabadanampu. Its activities are welfare by care of people in disease-HIV basing on compassion, by giving the education to one who infect with HIV and by cremating one who die of HIV.
On understanding the balanced way of life with holistic well-beings promotion according to Buddhist Psychology. The result of research found that :- the findings show there are four elements of well-being that when combining together, they will arise the holistic well-beings. The Holistic Well-beings characterize the innate body, social moral, calm mind, and the awakening wisdom, respectively. They are the fourfold outcome of the holistic well-beings. Such outcomes are the result of the Balanced Way of life when the Maslow’s Needs are fulfilled (Physiological, Safety, Social, Esteem, and Self-actualization Needs). There are ways of Well-beings promotion; practicing contentment, the Five Precepts observance, having good friends, principles of service, etc ) As a result, the “Well-beings” and “Balance Way”, the highest purposes will be finally achieved.

On the Development and Experiment of Model to Promote Holistic Health According to Integrate Buddhist Psychology about the development of model regards as Buddhist Teaching focusing on Sappaya-7, Trisikkha, Ariyamagga-8, Ariyasacca-4, development-4. Als Ergebnis der Studie werden lexikalische und thematische Motive, sowie Motive im Handlungsverlauf zwischen den Erzählungen erarbeitet. Die beschriebenen Motive stellen ein dicht verwobenes literarisches Netzwerk zwischen den Erzählungen dar. Sie zeigen einen narrativen Spannungsbogen auf, der vom urgeschichtlichen Brudermord zur Bruder-Vergebung geht und sich im Verlauf stets am Rande eines Brudermords bewegt

Genesis is a book of family histories which are marked throughout by conflict. This applies in particular to rivalry between brothers. Frequent episodes of reversals and other catalysts ignite conflicts which continually endanger family continuity. Although sibling rivalry has been extensively addressed by the academic research, the analysis of interconnected and recurrent literary motifs among the stories has not yet been sufficiently explored. Therefore, the present study investigates the literary connections among three principal rivalries: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau and Joseph and his brothers. This includes, in particular, the analysis of those texts which deal with the origin, escalation and resolution of these conflicts. As a result of this study, lexical and thematic motifs, as well as motifs of plot development among the stories are worked out. These motifs present a tightly interwoven narrative network among the stories. They reveal a narrative arc of suspense which ranges from the primeval fratricide to fraternal forgiveness, teetering continually on the brink of fratricide

Zentral hierbei sind ihnen eine emotionale Zuwendung zur Familie, die Möglichkeit, sich mehr an der alltäglichen Betreuung und Erziehung ihrer Kinder zu beteiligen sowie eine tragfähige Beziehung zu ihnen aufzubauen. Der traditionellen Ausprägung der Verantwortung als Ernährers der Familie wird ein Verständnis väterlicher Verantwortung an die Seite gestellt, das Aspekte der caring masculinities enthält.

The purpose of this study was to critically examine how family literacy is promoted and represented on websites developed by family literacy program providers. Naturalistic research over the last 20 years or so demonstrates that the family is a rich site for supporting children’s literacy development across socioeconomic and cultural contexts. That research suggests that families engage children in a wide array of literacy activities in their daily lives. Furthermore, significant others, in addition to parents, play important roles in children’s literacy development. In this study, we examined a representative sample of family literacy websites from across Canada. Findings suggest that: family literacy programs tend to focus almost exclusively on young children, families are portrayed narrowly, deficit notions of families are still prevalent, and the prom ises made about the impact of family literacy programs go far beyond what the limited research evidence available suggests.

There is a growing body of literature about the potential for early childhood settings to serve as community hubs to develop relationships with families. However, there is limited information about the ways in which families and early childhood staff interface in defining what constitutes ‘quality’ within settings. Researchers have rarely studied families in relation to the development of curriculum and pedagogical practices in early childhood settings. Consequently, the strategies that could assist staff in making meaningful connections with families are not prominent in the current literature. The author’s doctoral research explored families’ perceptions of the support they received from the early childhood setting and in particular examined the nature of the connections between families and early childhood settings. This article reports the findings from Phase 2 of the study, where the views of 58 Australian families and 22 staff working in five long day care centres in the state of New South Wales, Australia, were surveyed about the types of experiences they valued for children in early childhood settings. The findings revealed differing perspectives between families and staff in terms of the experiences they valued in the early childhood setting, as well as in the levels of communication occurring between families and staff about children and the educational program. It is understandable that both families and staff will have diverse views and beliefs (depending on level of training and experience) about what is important in the early childhood setting. This research study provides insights into perceptions of families and staff, and has implications for the ways in which connections could be formed and relationships built with families in early childhood settings.

Communication through social media characterizes modern lifestyles and relationships, including family interactions. The present study aims at deepening the role that parents' perceptions about social media effects on family systems can exert within their family functioning, specifically referring to the relationship between collective family efficacy and open communications within family systems with adolescents. A questionnaire to detect the openness of family communications, the collective family efficacy and the perceptions about the impacts of social media on family systems was administered to 227 Italian parents who had one or more teenage children, and who use Facebook and WhatsApp to communicate with them. From the results, these perceptions emerge as a mediator in the relationship between the collective family efficacy and the openness of communications, suggesting that it is not only the actual impact of social media on family systems that matters but also parents' perceptions about it and how much they feel able to manage their and their children's social media use without damaging their family relationships. Thus, the need to foster parents' positive perceptions about social media's potential impact on their family relationships emerges. A strategy could be the promotion of knowledge on how to functionally use social media.

Relationships between parent ratings of Part C/early intervention (EI) services and family outcomes for families of young children with disabilities were examined—specifically, the early childhood outcomes (ECO)–recommended family outcomes and family quality of life (FQOL). Measures included the Early Childhood Services Survey, the ECO Center Family Outcomes Survey, and the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale. Findings support a logic-model relationship between parent ratings of Part C/EI services, ECO-recommended family outcomes, and FQOL. Parent ratings of Part C/EI services were found to predict immediate family outcomes as measured by ECO-recommended family outcomes, and ECO-recommended family outcomes, in turn, predicted the broader outcome of enhanced FQOL. Implications for EI practice and evaluation are discussed.

What does ‘doing family while poor’ teach us about agency, resilience and care under COVID-19? Set against a dual backdrop of increasing economic hardships and expanding inequalities, and in light of a shifting perspective in poverty and family studies, we employ David Morgan’s family practices approach to study the lived realities of family life through the perspective of everyday relationships. Our research, led by a team comprised of academics and activists who themselves endure poverty, is set to allow people experiencing poverty to document their everyday lives. In their journals we identify a form of social awareness to the politics of poverty, which consist of negative emotions emanating from one’s daily struggles against the harsh reality of inequality, yet do not lead to paralysis and inaction. We dub this state agentic hopelessness.

Investigación socio antropológica sobre el papel de los padres consumidores de drogas en la prevención de los consumos de sus hijos. En los últimos años se han incorporado progresivamente al rol de padres / madres personas consumidores o exconsumidoras de drogas ilegales. Personas que durante su juventud consumieron recreativamente o tener contacto con drogas, como el cannabis y la cocaína. Estos padres / madres dan a sus hijos un discurso sobre las drogas, no centrado exclusivamente en la abstención del consumo y por tanto diferente que los padres no consumidores. Por tanto, estos padres consumidores están aplicando nuevas estrategias preventivas. En este sentido, algunos pueden tolerar o permitir ciertos consumos, además de gestionar los consumos de los hijos de una manera poco alarmista.

Singapore official discourse speaks of (Chinese) families as both cultural and economic assets and as vestiges of national identity. Chinese families are often described in traditional terms, namely as patrilinial, patrilocal, patriarchal and clearly hierarchical. In Singapore official discourse, the historical success of traditional family businesses is presented as a unique ethnic and national characteristic. Simultaneously, the Singapore state claims to be ‘modern’, ‘Western’, and ‘cosmopolitan’, allowing little space for ‘parochial practices’ and ‘archaic traditions’. Either praised or looked down on, family businesses occupy an ambiguous position within the ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ discourses of the Singapore state. This article supplies the evidence of changing family and business relations in Chinese–Singapore firms. Three major factors are isolated that influence Singapore attitudes towards family businesses: Chinese culture, globalization and the logic of developing capitalism, and the role of the Singapore state.

Recent research has affirmed the need to examine contextual influences on adolescent substance use in a multilevel framework. This study examined the role of neighborhood opportunities for substance use in promoting adolescent substance use. Data came from two components of the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods: the Longitudinal Cohort Study, consisting of interviews with youth and their primary caregivers across three waves of data with an average span of 4.5 years; and a Community Survey of neighborhood residents. Analysis used an Item-Response Theory-based statistical approach on 6556 substance use item responses from 1639 youth (49.0 % female) within 80 neighborhoods to assess the extent to which neighborhood opportunities for substance use had direct and indirect effects on adolescent substance use. Neither direct nor mediated effects of neighborhood opportunities for substance use on adolescent substance use were detected. But, analyses revealed moderating effects such that higher levels of neighborhood opportunities for substance use: (1) amplified the detrimental effects of parental substance use and peer substance use on youth substance use; and (2) attenuated the protective effect of adolescents' perceived harm of substance use on adolescent substance use. The results suggest that the ways in which neighborhood characteristics impact adolescent behavior are nuanced. Rather than impact individual-level outcomes directly, neighborhood context may be particularly relevant by conditioning the effects of salient individual-level risk and protective factors for substance use.

The traditional institution of the family within Roman Catholic Christianity and Christianity in general is in an invidious position in contemporary society, partly because it lacks an agreed definition in a fluid global context. The church is an institution in which families subsist and which both needs and bolsters the family unit for its own existence and stability. However, all major churches seem to be stuck in outdated traditional modes of understanding which are exclusive and cause great distress to many who do not conform to them. The Roman Catholic Church has recently inaugurated a discussion of pastoral challenges currently facing family life. This is an attempt to evaluate critically its initial findings through deconstructing the traditional notion of family on which the Church teaching seems to rely.

El propósito principal de este análisis es considerar, desde una perspectiva histórica de larga duración, tres características fundamentales del sistema educativo costarricense: en primer término, el hecho de que se trata de una educación que, desde sus inicios, ha sido decisivamente pública; en segundo lugar, el papel jugado por los padres de familia en la constitución de una demanda por más y mejores servicios educativos para sus hijos; y finalmente, los procesos de formación de educadores y las dificultades que ha enfrentado la sociedad costarricense para desarrollar cuadros debidamente preparados de maestros y profesores para los distintos niveles de enseñanza.

Adoption is currently subject to a great deal of media scrutiny. High-profile cases of international adoption via the Internet or other unofficial routes have drawn attention to the relative ease with which children can be obtained on the global circuit, and have brought about legislation which regulates the exchange of children within and between countries. however, a scarcity of research into cross-cultural attitudes to child-rearing, and a wider lack of awareness of cultural difference in adoptive contexts, has meant that the assumptions underlying Western childcare policy are seldom examined or made explicit. the articles in Cross-Cultural Approaches to Adoption look at adoption practices from Africa, Oceania, Asia, South and Central America, including examples of societies in which children are routinely separated from their biological parents or passed through several foster families. Showing the range and flexibility of child-rearing practices that approximate to the Western term 'adoption', they demonstrate the benefits of a cross-cultural appreciation of family life, and allow a broader understanding of the varied relationships that exist between children and adoptive parents.

This article presents the game Junomi, a game designed to give families and teenagers opportunities to play with the way they communicate and also experience closeness and togetherness. Taking a research based approach and getting a detailed understanding of the situation to design for facilitated an investigation that helped seeing potentials for playful moments and spaces in the situation, as well as how the different elements and aspects of the situation could be made playable. Everyday communication is considered complex, heterogeneous and indefinable and the game does not, which models or simulate the complexity of the situation, but to create a frame that invites, suggests, reminds and encourage for a playful mind in the everyday and thereby gives possibilities for the families to, through play, explore and experiments with ways of communicating and ways of being together. The experience of the game depends largely on how the players choose to engage with the game.
