Fishing Boat

After the breaching of the Agger Tange in 1825 the fishing communities of the Western Limfjord in Northern Jutland (Denmark) went through a time of economic crisis. In response to these difficult circumstances two innovations were introduced: the sjægt (a new type of fishing vessel) and Danish seine fishing.  Through case studies this paper examines the historical background and impact of these important innovations in times of crisis at the Western Limfjord.

The aim of this paper is to present the analysis of a selection of archaeological materials included in the arqua collection. The items examined are related to fishing activities and have been found in submarine contexts off the coast of Murcia. This analysis has been carried out within the framework of my doctoral studies, currently in progress and through which I intend to compile the evidence for fishing activities in Hispania. This work is the first study with these characteristics in the area, and aims at completing the already available information concerning the coast of the Tarraconensis.

Man overboard (MOB) is defined a person who has fallen to the sea from a boat or a vessel in the water and needing to rescue; this person may be crew member of coast gourd, merchant ship or fisher. According to previous studies, international maritime conventions such as SOLAS, MLC, and STCW covered emergency procedures of MOB accident. There are two gaps; first, there is no any automatic systems needed to be onboard to detect MOB at the moment of falling overboard, where statistics illustrate that up to 75% of MOB finally died or missed due to nobody saw them at the moment of falling, especially if the ship steaming high speed. The second gap is that the smoke life buoy is not effective to rescue the victim due to ship's movement away from him, especially in the presence of white horse in rough sea, and if he doesn't wear life jacket. Therefore, drones equipped with smoke life buoy, GPS, and thermal camera will be effective more than traditional equipment. The research discusses and analyses the extremely useful of implementation an integrated MOB rescue system onboard ship for monitoring, tracking and rescuing. These systems use an infrared human motion detector or wrest band which transmit signal for bridge receiver to give alarm once person fall in water; this is called automatic MOB detection system, ECDIS built-in SAR software and drones for quick response to arrive accurate position of victim. Research aims to improve rescue operation of MOB to reduce loss of life at sea, through the amendment of current international maritime convention related to MOB emergency procedures.

A small wooden raft—the kattumaram— is still very prominent among fishing communities on the east coast of India. The goal of this study is to describe this traditional fishing raft, focusing on the description of constructional changes. The essentials of terminology, conditions of production, propulsion techniques, and crewing, as well as equipment and the spread and usage are described. Kegiatan penangkapan hiu sebagai target tangkapan utama bagi perikanan rawai di Tanjung Luar, Lombok Timur berlangsung sepanjang tahun dengan upaya penangkapan yang terus meningkat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan hasil tangkapan hiu dari alat tangkap rawai hanyut dan rawai dasar yang dioperasikan oleh nelayan yang berbasis di PPI Tanjung Luar, Lombok Timur. Data tangkapan diperoleh melalui catatan enumerator di Tanjung Luar, Lombok Timur dari Januari – November 2015. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif berdasarkan laju pancingnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa laju tangkap rawai hiu yang dioperasikan nelayan Tanjung Luar berfluktuasi tiap bulan dengan rerata 12,97±6,131 ekor/hari dan rerata laju pancing 4,32±2,23 ekor/100 pancing. Fishing Power Index untuk rawai hanyut dan dasar sebesar 1,00 dan 0,55. Laju tangkap cenderung mulai mengalami peningkatan pada April dan mencapai puncaknya sekitar November. Laju tangkap rawai hanyut lebih tinggi dibandingkan rawai dasar karena frekuensi hiu tertangkap lebih banyak pada rawai hanyut. Jenis hiu hasil tangkapan rawai dasar lebih beragam (26 jenis) dibanding rawai hanyut (18 jenis). Rawai hanyut cenderung lebih banyak menangkap jenis hiu dengan status konservasi rawan dan langka menurut Daftar Merah IUCN serta masuk dalam Appendiks CITES. Total hasil tangkapan hiu didominasi oleh Carcharhinus falciformis (42,12%), Prionace glauca (10,51%) dan C. limbatus (10,32%). Jenis C. falciformis dan P. glauca cenderung lebih banyak tertangkap oleh rawai hanyut sedangkan C. limbatus banyak tertangkap oleh rawai dasar.

James Hornell in his historic work 'The Origins and Ethnological Significance of Indian Boat Designs' (1920) mentioned about Rampon - the boat type that form the identity of Goan fishermen. According to him these boats are found on the southern region of Konkan and dominate on the Goan coast and are mostly employed for beach seining (Hornell 1920: 21). Nothing more is mentioned by him and not much is known about these regional boats which are still been used along the coast of Goa but at the verge of decline. There is no established antiquity for these boat types. How they originated in the subcontinent, how they are constructed, who construct them and how they are technologically different from other regional boat types of Goa and what makes them unique to serve as a Goan identity.

This article is, thus, an attempt to investigate these regional craft of Goa locally called as Ramponchem Vode and present the results of the survey and recording. Emphasis is on the technology and its construction method. Comparison of these boat type is also been made with other regional craft types of Goa and its distribution pattern. This study, thus, is a humble attempt to throw more light on the construction method, usage of these regional boat types and to find out how it’s different from other boat types of Goa and their vital role in Goan society and culture.

Fishing is a major local industry in Malaysia, particularly in rural areas. However, the rapidly increasing price of fuel is seriously affecting the industry's viability. At present, outboard petrol engines are the preferred choice for use in small-scale fishing boats because they deliver the advantages of high speed and low weight, they are easy to install, and they use minimal space. Petrol outboard engines are known to consume a greater amount of fuel than inboard diesel engines, but installing diesel engines with conventional submerged propellers in existing small-scale fishing boats is not economically viable because major hullform modifications and extra expenditure are required to achieve this. This study describes a proposal to enable reductions in fuel consumption by introducing the combined use of a diesel engine and surface-piercing propeller (SPP). An analysis of fuel consumption reduction is presented, together with an economic feasibility study. Resulting data reveal that the use of the proposed modifications would save 23.31 liters of fuel per trip (40.75 %) compared to outboard motors, equaling annual savings of RM 3962 per year.

Pasie Nan Tigo Urban Village has 20 Fishermen Groups, one of which is active is the Pantai Jaya Fishermen Group. Based on the facts and discussions with the Pantai Jaya Fishermen group it was found that the most important problem was the high operational costs required when going to sea, while the fish catches obtained were uncertain and the lack of technological touch in the fishing process. To go to sea, fishermen with Tondo Ships must prepare a minimum fund of 1.35 million rupiah, of which around 50% is used to buy fuel oil (BBM). The solution offered to solve the problem is the utilization of environmentally friendly solar energy through the solar panel technology of ship lighting systems. It is expected that from this activity can be obtained by fishing boats powered by environmentally friendly solar energy that is more economical and profitable. The use of solar panels for ship lighting systems will replace the use of generator engines which so far need fuel.

Seakeeping analysis is important in assessing the performance of floating structure in waves. To perform Seakeeping calculations, the wave characteristics as well as the response of the vessel are needed. The analysis normally requires reliable computer programs to calculate response amplitude operator (RAO) and accurate seaway representation. For seaway representation theoretical spectra can be used but it is always preferable to use the measured spectra which can be obtained through full scale measurement. On the other hand theoretical spectra can be used for comparison. This paper presents the results of a full-scale measurement of wave and vessel motions taken from a Malaysian fishing vessel. The vessel operates off the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Wave buoy was used to measure wave data and Vessel Motion Monitoring System (VMMS) was used to measure the vessel motions. The article contains a review of the creations of belles-lettres where the titular issue is found. In the first part there are presented epic pieces, and in the second – poetry pieces. In both parts, the material is ordered by authors, taking into account the meaning and value of their achievements. The whole text is ending with a short summary, containing reflections on the topic of the image of traditional fishing in Western Pomerania after 1945, presented in Polish belles-lettres.

By accident, the world-famous brewery Carlsberg became a central force in global marine science during the first three decades of the 20th century. Within a core group of scientists and managers, Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933) was the key figure combining the efforts of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the Danish state and several private companies. Launching 26 oceangoing expeditions Schmidt made landmark discoveries such as the breeding ground for the Atlantic eel in the Sargasso Sea. The scientific frontier was pushed literally kilometres into the deep sea and across the World’s oceans. While the formal North Atlantic Empire of the small state of Denmark was in decline, an informal empire of science was erected instead.

Kapal penangkap ikan harus memiliki stabilitas dan kemampuan manuver yang baik. Kasko dengan bentuk round bottom memiliki rolling duration yang relatif kurang baik dibandingkan dengan bentuk lainnya. Peredaman rolling duration dan yang akan meningkatkan kualitas stabilitas pada kapal dapat dilakukan dengan pemasangan bilge keel. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) Membandingkan setiap nilai parameter oleng kapal model yang menggunakan bilge keel; (2) Menentukan rasio minimum panjang bilge keel terhadap length of waterline kapal model yang masih memiliki kemampuan untuk meredam rolling kapal. Metode penelitian dilakukan dengan memberi perlakuan pada kapal model dan mengamati gerakan rolling tersebut dengan memberikan beberapa perlakuan panjang bilge keel berbeda. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemasangan bilge keel dengan beberapa rasio panjang terhadap length of waterline memiliki hasil yang berbeda signifikan, dan bilge keel dengan rasio panjang sebesar 0,2 masih memiliki kemampuan yang efektif dalam meredam gerakan rolling kapal model.

My short story "A Night of Moon and Sea" on "The Globetrotter’s Companion: A Collection of Creative Travel Writing" (Lion Lounge Press, Oxford/London 2011): a night of work in the Adriatic Sea on an Italian fishing boat that left from the port of Molfetta, in Puglia (South Italy).

This study aims to identify the problems of the wooden boats and the furniture used in these boats in BartınKurucaşile district center and to develop solutions. These enterprises use local chestnut woods obtained from the forests of the Black Sea Region. It is noteworthy that the number of enterprises that have been producing boats with their unique characteristics with traditional methods for many years in the district has decreased in recent years. A study demonstrating the change in recent years was supported by the Kurucaşile District Governorship
and Development Agency in 2013. In this study, in order to reveal the current situation of wooden yacht / boat and
furniture manufacturers with Kurucaş and the changes between 2012-2020, face-to-face interview method was
used with the business owners. As a result, the current status of the manufacturers who continue their existence in the district were determined and solution suggestions for the problems were discussed and solution suggestions for the development of these enterprises were included.
