Photographs and documentary accounts relating to Geronimo’s 1886 attempted surrender at the Cañon de los Embudos site are used to explore the archaeological nature of structure or hut imprints. These primary written and visual sources provide a basis for understanding the extremely unobtrusive nature of these shelter remains. Archaeological footprints from this site today reveal that house construction patterns are consistent with mobile groups in general when under circumstances similar to those at the surrender site.

This book engages with representations of social crisis in Argentine fictional cinema between 1998 and 2005, a period when Argentina experienced a deep economic crisis that brought about significant changes in politics, culture, society and the arts. It focuses on the ways in which cinema interpreted and represented both contemporary and long-established issues within national and social discourse, while re-assessing notions of national identity, culture and class. Despite a growing body of scholarship on Argentine film published in English over the past few years, the role of more conventional films aimed at the public at large remains underexplored. By combining close textual analysis of films with the study of their cultural context, this book argues that fictional cinema at large addressed predominantly middle-class audiences, offering both reflective and divergent views on social reality that enriched the cultural arena in which Argentineans could reflect on their past, their daily life, and their relationship with the other. In this sense cinema helped Argentine people to learn to live in democracy.

Written by practitioners and scholars from many disciplines, this book discusses social issues of consequence to Latinos and specific strengths and risk factors of the Latino community. They then offer methods that utilize these strengths to ensure a culturally-competent approach to practice with Latino populations. This study examined the academic resilience of undocumented immigrant Latino students. It was hypothesized that due to their legal and social marginalization, students who experienced high risk accompanied by high levels of both personal and environmental protective factors would have higher academic outcomes than students with lower levels of these protective resources. The results from regression and cluster analyses (N = 104) indicated that despite specific risk factors (e.g., elevated feelings of societal rejection, low parental education, and high employment hours during school) undocumented students who have high levels of personal and environmental protective factors (e.g., supportive parents, friends, and participation in school activities) report higher levels of academic success than students with similar risk factors and lower levels of personal and environmental resources. The results also suggested variability in risk exposure among undocumented students with some students reporting low levels of risk accompanied by high levels of personal and environmental protective factors.

The portrayal of Hispanics in American film and television has focused traditionally on negative stereotypes of the worst values and traditions of the Spanish-speaking communities in the country, with a racist and prejudiced misrepresented focus, a sample of the superficiality and hatred by some in the media industry. Rock art, once an often-neglected subject, is increasingly considered a meaningful social practice among past and present communities. This thesis adds to a growing body of research that regards rock art as more than art or ideation, but as a means for establishing one’s identity in relation to their physical and social worlds. To demonstrate this, I focus on a corpus of Hohokam petroglyphs in the South Mountains, near the center of the Phoenix Basin in south-central Arizona. I make the case that these petroglyphs were instrumental in ritual practices that displayed and conveyed religious knowledge between performers and audiences. Rock art therefore positioned people in relationships of power with other people, as well as other-than-human agents, regarding the control and distribution of religious knowledge.
I rely on contextual factors throughout this thesis to investigate the nuances of petroglyph-related ritualism. Hohokam rock art was created and used on at least seven types of stage, each varying in ritual depth and entailing different performers and audiences. This shows that rock art, although uncommon, cross-cut social identities, and the religious knowledge involved was not institutionalized within a select few social positions, such as shamans or similar politico-religious offices.
Hohokam rock art is relatively visible and accessible; this “openness” paralleled the fluidity of religious knowledge within the larger Hohokam world and complements what we know from village settings. My chronological assessment nevertheless shows that this was not always the case. I use four relative-dating techniques—proximity analysis, cross-media design correlation, repatination, and artifact associations—to argue petroglyph-related ritualism in the South Mountains was performed mostly during the Preclassic era (~A.D. 500-1100). A cessation in rock art by the onset of the Classic period (~A.D. 1100-1400) resulted from an usurpation of religious knowledge by emerging leaders in the wake of a fracturing ritual system. This social transformation met little resistance, in part because the new religious order maintained qualities of the previous ritual system, yet emerging leaders reconfigured it in ways to justify and substantiate their new authority.

Prehistoric and Historic Native American pottery was recovered from three archaeological sites investigated as a part of the Rio Nuevo Archaeology project. A total of 17,073 sherds was recovered from the Clearwater site, AZ BB:13:6 (ASM), with 9,790 of those sherds recovered from features located at the San Agustín Mission locus of the site, 4,226 sherds from the Mission Gardens locus, and 3,057 sherds from the Congress Street and Brickyard loci. Another 950 sherds were recovered from canal features at AZ BB:13:481 (ASM). Finally, a total of 8,704 sherds was recovered from features located at the Tucson Presidio/Block 181, AZ BB:13:13 (ASM). Analysis focused on identifying sherds of Early Agricultural period incipient plain ware pottery, regardless of recovery context, and temporally unmixed deposits of prehistoric, Spanish, Mexican, and American Territorial period O’odham pottery.

"A Petrographic Approach to Sand-Tempered Pottery Provenance Studies: Examples from Two Hohokam Local Systems" summarizes methods developed by the authors to model sand temper resource compositions in Arizona's Tucson and Tonto basins and major findings regarding the concentration of production and spatial distribution of sand-tempered Hohokam pottery in those basins. The petrofacies approach to provenance determination and ethnographic/ethnoarchaeological data used to evaluate annual prehistoric ceramic ceramic production rates should prove useful in reconstructing pottery manufacturing and distributions systems elsewhere.

If you only read one paper on the Sobaipuri, do not read this one. This early paper represents conceptions at the time about the Sobaipuri, but it is important to recognize that as a result of years of research my views have changed substantially. The Sobaipuri were here much earlier, had much more permanent and planned settlements, and were more organized than we all thought when this paper was written.
