Harmos Ilonát elsősorban Kosztolányi Dezső feleségeként, illetve írónőként szokás emlegetni. Dacára annak, hogy az utóbbi években újra kiadták művei egy részét, nemhogy színésznői működésének állomásai nem ismertek, de még írói munkássága sincs teljes mértékben föltárva. A nagyközönség által ismert kép elsősorban az írófeleség-szerep sztereotípiájának való megfelelést mutatja, valamint a szakmai érdeklődés ugyancsak a házasság utáni tevékenységét veszi alapul. Eddigi tudásunk teljesebbé tételéhez azonban Harmos Ilona indulásának éveiről is szót kell ejtenünk. Életének 1907 és 1913 közötti időszakában-tehát még férjhezmenetele előtt-ugyanis színésznőként, műfordítóként és "szárnypróbálgató" írónőként egyaránt föllépett, nem egy esetben jeles kortárs szereplők közreműködésével. In my essay, I would like to point out the textual parallelisms in 19th-century’s folklore and popular poetry, through a contemporary epic poem [The Gypsies of Nagyida] of János Arany. I tried to reveal such textual parallelisms and contact points, which – hopefully – can bring us closer to certain reworked text versions from the 19th century, belonging to the popular literature (chapbook literature) or to the fi ne literature, or having been created on the border of these two categories. On one hand, the study of these texts helps the discovery of the base texts of certain chapbook literature pieces of work, and on the other hand the exploration of the body text reworked by János Arany in The Gypsies of Nagyida could contribute to the recent research results showing his familiarity with the traditions of popular poetry.

In 1829, as part of a poetical experiment, four tales were published in ’Muzárion, Élet és Literatúra’, a distinguished periodical of literary theory and criticism edited by Pál Szemere and Ferenc Kölcsey. One fairy tale (‘Tündér Ilona’ / ‘Fairy Ilona’) by János Mailáth was translated by Ferenc Kazinczy, while another literary fairy tale, that was a prose remake of  the poem ‘Usge und Zachi, eine Japanische Geschichte’ by C. G. Pfeffel, and two animals tales (Rooster, Hen, Duck, Pin, and Needle on a Journey, ATU 210; The Animals Flee in Fear of the End of the World, ATU 20C) were published under the name of the wife of the editor, Krisztina Szemere, who died a year ago. These tales are of special interest for folklore studies, since until 1829 hardly any tales had been published in Hungarian (collections of tales by Georg Gaal and János Mailáth were published in German in 1822 and 1825).

This article is an experiment to reconstruct, on the basis of literary correspondences and manuscript documents of the Szemere family’s archives, a biography of Krisztina Szemere, an educated young noble woman, who wrote sonetts, read German and French literature, lived in mansions on family estates in villages in north-eastern Hungary and then in the vicinity of the capital, Pest.

Móricz Zsigmond 1931-ben publikált, Barbárok című elbeszélésének értelmezésére vállalkozik ez a tanulmány. A gazdag recepcióhoz képest olyan korábban kidolgozatlan, szövegközi utalásokon nyugvó újraolvasást kínál, ami a barbár kifejezés többféle nyelvtörténeti aspektusából indul ki és a görög-római, illetve zsidó-keresztény kultúrákkal párbeszédben kapja meg kontextusát. A kéziratként benyújtott szöveg 2014 szeptemberében elnyerte a Magyar Irodalomtörténeti Társasági Móricz Zsigmondról szóló tanulmányíró pályázatának I. díját. A feltöltött szövegváltozat a tényleges publikációhoz képest 2 lappal el van csúszva, mert a könyvalakban 177. lapon kezdődő írás, ebben a szerkesztői változatban a 179. lapon kezdődik.

Amikor Kosztolányi Dezső az Új Nemzedék című napilaphoz szegődött, antiszemitizmussal párosuló nemzeti radikális nézeteket hirdetett, noha korábban több filoszemita cikket jegyzett. Az 1910-es években még azok közé tartozott, akik pártolták a zsidóság térnyerését a kulturális életben. (Paper on Dezső Kosztolányi's antisemitist period at the radical daily Új Nemzedék. This paper examines a literary debate which took place in 1930 between two prominent figures of Hungarian literature Frigyes Karinthy and Áron Tamási. This debate was one of the first manifestations of the rural vs. urban (népies vs. urbánus) controversy. This is a conflict between authors of different social origin and - consquently, often also political views – which is present in Hungarian culture, society and politics up until now, therefore it is worth to examine the roots of this phenomenon.
The problem also involves the following questions: what criteria decide the affiliation of authors and their literary works to ’national literatures’? Language, origin, citizenship, theme of writings? What is the relation of minority and mother country literature? The debate also sheds light on how Hungarian literature was coping with the trauma of Trianon and how it influenced its development.

The paper is about a forgotten Hungarian novel form 1913 written by Kálmán Harsányi. My main questions are:
– How visual arts can be represented in a text?
– Which characters can refer to contemporary Hungarian painters and philosophers?
– What kind of spiritual movements (new gnosticism etc.) were popular in Hungary at the beginning of the 20th century?

A klasszikus magyar irodalom oktathatósága, oktatásának értelme évek óta heves közéleti-oktatáspolitikai viták tárgya. Esszém a klasszikus magyar irodalom kutatása és a tanárképzés gyakorlata felől fogalmaz meg érveket és kérdéseket ehhez a szemléleti vitához.

The essay reflects on the passionate contemporary Hungarian public and pedagogical debates on the role and teaching of the so-called classical Hungarian literature.

Literary works generally portray historical and social changes of their times besides of their aesthetical values. These writings also interpret the ideas which influenced the most. This makes them a form of contemporary documentation (Zeitdokument or Zeitroman), which helps to understand a specific era. In the 20th century, Georg Lukács, the Marxist theorist and philosopher, was a significant thinker, whose attitude, character, and ideas influenced many other philosophers and artists. The aim of this paper is to outline Lukács’s development of thinking from the point of view of his contemporaries. To this end, I discuss four literary writings in this paper: these four works represent an era from Lukács’s life and thinking. The almost unknown feuilleton of Béla Balázs published in 1911 idealizes the young Lukács and portrays him as a quixotic thinker, who belongs to another sphere, another “caste”. In the turn of 1921-1922, the novel of Emma Ritoók entitled Spiritual Adventurers was published, which represented the generation of pathfinders negatively and disillusioned, as they tried to calculate the redemption of the individuals with some mystical philosophical ideas. Anna Lesznai’s novel, In the Beginning was the Garden, is a significant opus with two volumes which outlines the troubled times of Hungarian history and recreates the historical events from the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 to the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic and the first years of emigration. The two novels portray Lukács as a pathfinder who stands at a crossroads between theory and political praxis. Ritoók’s novel judges this struggle and interprets it in a caricatured way, while Anna Lesznai represents Lukács’s dilemma and decision as a sacrifice. The fourth work is The Interview by István Eörsi, which was published first in 1983 and is a very personal writing. Eörsi’s writing is a drama or rather an “absurd documentary play”, where Eörsi evokes his old Master, who is not the great thinker and philosopher, who he once was. The mind struggles as it still tries to create and work, but the body fails and Lukács got lost in the maze of his own thinking. The student wants to face his old Master, trying to get answers to his own dilemmas about Lukács, but his physical inability makes it almost impossible to communicate with him. All these four works represent Lukács in different phases and they take a very specific glance at a significant œuvre. However, these works deserve the consideration not just from the point of view of Lukács’s significance, but because of their literary value. The literary works mentioned here are on the periphery of the literary canon and the rediscovering of these writings could bring new aspects not just for literary studies, but for the history of philosophy and ideas as well.

Füredi Vida 1818-ban, a Tudományos Gyűjteményben megjelent A' Recensiókról című cikkében a következőképpen ítéli el a korabeli hazai és külföldi recenziós gyakorlatot: "[k]i olvashattya undorodás nélkül Voltairenek antricensiójit […]. Így nálunk ki javallya a' Mondolatnak, tzimképét, az Antimondolatot, a' Tükrötskét, a' Morális Katekizmusnak recensiójára adott immoralis feleletet? Éppen nem lehet tsodálni, hogy némelly jeles Írók, kiket a' természet a' közjónak gyarapítására formált, a' literatori körből kiállanak; mert ugyan kinek is legyen kedve a' dertze közé keveredni?" Füredi megidézi mind Voltaire Fréronnal szembeni névtelen írásokban zajló vitáját, mind a hazai, többnyire szintén anonim, általa gúnyiratként értelmezett recenziós gyakorlatot, amelynek következménye, hogy az írókat eltántorítják az alkotástól, ami veszélyt jelent a hazai literatúrára. Az említett szövegek különböző műfajúak, mivel szatírát, paszkvillust és recenziót egyaránt találunk közöttük, de Füredi elsődlegesen a hazai paszkvillusként értendő kritika negatív, tartós és éles hangvételű vitákat generáló, névtelen példáit sorolta fel. A listázott hazai szövegek és a rájuk érkezett dühös feleletek egytől-egyig a cikkét megelőző öt év terméséből származtak, így Füredinél ezek egyaránt a kontrollálatlan recenzió jelenségét példázták. Tanulmányomban arra keresem a választ, hogy a Füredi említette szövegekben hogyan valósult meg a hatalmaskodás, és ebben milyen szerepe volt a szerzői névhasználatnak, valamint a szerzői nevekkel való különböző műveleteknek. Egyáltalán mivel szolgáltak rá arra, hogy Füredi ekkora vehemenciával keljen ki ellenük? Vizsgálatomba azokat a forrásokat vonom be, melyeket Füredi közvetlenül hivatkozott a fentebbi idézetében, illetve melyeket feltétlenül fontosnak tartottam a szövegek keletkezésének és kortárs fogadatásának árnyalásához, viszont nem tekintem át a szövegek által kiváltott viták teljes korpuszát.

„Literary historians agree that in the eighteenth century the system of litterae as episteme fell apart, and the group of texts we now call literature split from the rest of other sciences. Before this, sciences were seen as coherent systems of “things described”, but in early modern times the sciences started to become separate fields. At the same time, the arts also went in a separate direction. I call this differentiation “becoming solitary”.”

A Tudományos Gyűjtemény 1822-ben közölte Takáts Éva Sebestyén Gábor vígjátékairól szóló recenzióját. A női névvel aláírt éles kritika hosszú vitát generált a korabeli nyilvánosságban, ahol a szerző névhasználata és személye egyaránt kiemelt szerepet játszott. A bíráló neve ugyanis a kritikusi beszédpozíció elfoglalásának egyik problematikus kérdéseként jelent meg a 19. század első évtizedeinek magyar irodalmában. Ekkoriban a beszédpozíció megszerzésére több, a szerzői névvel összefüggő alternatíva állt rendelkezésre, de e változatok nem taglalták azt a kérdést, hogy a megnyilatkozás jogát elnyerheti-e egyáltalán egy női néven író kritikusnő. Tanulmányomban arra keresem a választ, hogy egy nő elfoglalhatta-e egyáltalán a kritikusi pozíciót, és ezzel kapcsolatosan milyen vélemények fogalmazódtak meg a nyilvánosságban. A női recenzenst érintő álláspontok kapcsán egyrészt azt vizsgálom, hogy a vita hozzászólói milyen névhasználati megfontolásokat alkalmaztak, amikor Takáts megállapításaira reagáltak, másrészt pedig hogy nőként meddig lehetett a recenzensi beszédpozíciót megtartani, és ezt mennyire befolyásolta a társadalmi és irodalmi kapcsolatrendszer. A szerzői névhasználat mellett figyelembe veszem a vita során használt nyilvánosság médiumait: a vitaszövegek hordozóiból (levél, nyomtatott kritika, könyv) és hozzáférhetőségükből ugyanis következtetni lehet a női kritikus elfogadottságára is.

Signed volumes in the library of János Honti

The personal library of János Honti (1910-1945), Hungarian folklorist and folktale researcher, was catalogued in 2015, at the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The collection contains about 40 volumes signed by their authors, most of whom were members of the Stemma, the intellectual circle founded by the classical philologist Karl Kerényi. This paper presents the signed copies of the Honti-collection.

Folktales with interspersed songs represent a special area of folklore research; in the Hungarian folktale collections, this category includes only a few types (mainly the Singing Bote type AaTh 780 and the My mother killed it, my father ate it type AaTh 720). This paper analysis the function of the interpolated songs in some Hungarian and Spanish Gypsy variants of the Singing Bone tale type. Among the functions we discuss that the accompanying text can fulfill an explanatory role,  creating the context in which the song is embedded during the course of telling; during this act of telling, the interpolated song can function as an interactional tool in the teller's repertoire: the audience joins in the singing of the well-known traditional song, so they become an integrated part of the performance in which the audience is an essential participant from an interpretative point of view and, at the same time, the song interspersed in the folktales create a sentimental tensions due to their appearance in moments of intense emotional and artistic concentration, the hero of the tale is experiencing extreme grief the expression of which is fairly difficult for the character unless he sings it out: we can say in other words that the songs embedded in the folktales strongly dramatize the story.

Nell’estate del 1924 Dezső Kosztolányi fece un viaggio in Italia e, in occasione di una visita a Maksim Gor’kij a Sorrento, regalò allo scrittore russo una copia del suo romanzo A véres költő, romanzo che venne pubblicato a Leningrado nel 1927 senza che Kosztolányi ne abbia mai avuto notizia.

Bónus Tibor A másik titok E monográfi a a magyar irodalom egyik legismertebb, klasszikus regényé-nek elemzésére vállalkozik. Lassú olvasással közelít Kosztolányi szövegéhez, melynek bonyolult jelentéstani hálózatát, belső összefüggéseit éppúgy igyek-szik feltárni, mint a szöveg kívülére is rákérdezni, ami nem csupán intra-és intertextuális kapcsolatok, hanem a szöveget alkotó hiányok körültekintő olvasását is jelenti. A szerzőt mindenek előtt az Édes Anna kétarcú volta ve-zeti, az a tapasztalata, hogy ez a különös nyelvi erővel megalkotott irodalmi mű mialatt széles körben olvasható, merészen mondva, nemzeti ponyvaként viselkedik, a legnehezebb kihívásokat adja annak az értelmezőnek, aki úgy kerül a bűvkörébe, hogy ennek az esztétikai hatásnak a poétikai és textu-ális feltételrendszere iránt is érdeklődik. Bónus Tibor könyve e kétarcúság mibenlétére is kérdezve olvassa a szöveget, mely eddig benne feltáratlan vá-laszokat rejteget nyelv és történelem, esztétikai és morál, mű és élet(rajz), iro-dalom és politika összefüggéseire, sohasem elválaszthatóan saját olvasásának s általában az olvasásnak és az irodalomnak a kérdőre vonásától. A könyv az irodalmi alkotás nyelviségéből kiinduló irodalomtudományos beszéd teljesít-ménye révén Kosztolányi titokzatos regényének pontosságában invenciózus olvasására törekszik, számítva az Édes Anna iránt elmélyültebb érdeklődést mutató szélesebb olvasóközönség fi gyelmére is.

Establishment and institutionalisation of public criticism in Hungary were the result of a process that took place from the last third of the 18th century until the 1830s. I associate the last phase of the institutionalisation of criticism with Kritikai Lapok, a periodical edited by József Bajza, as this was the first Hungarian medium which defined itself before the readers of that period by promoting panopticism in the Foucaultian sense. This long period was characterised by several debates discussing the role and purposes of the literary institution of criticism. In addition to the practice of criticism that evolved between the 1810s and the 1830s, a series of succinct theoretical works appeared with the primary aim of clarifying the issues related to review writing. One of these issues – pseudonymisation of the critic – was identified by an author under the alias ∆ (Sámuel Prepeliczay) in his article of 1823, where he considered anonymity as a key problem, which – in his opinion – could resolve the debates of the era in the field of review.

During the subject period, criticism was considered to be a controversial genre, despite the fact that there was a declared consent among the thinkers of the era that its primary purpose was to educate writers and readers alike, while its trendsetting, archiving, canonising functions, or those intended to introduce the nation’s cultural products and build careers could not be neglected, either. A critical approach associated with criticism, however, had brought revulsion in the minds of certain members of recipient communities, thus making it unpopular and disapproved. These tendencies urged critics to present their views through various uses of pseudonymisation on the platforms available to them. The great potential in pseudonymisation opened up a world of possibilities for critics, who had hardly had any room for manoeuvre until then. Given this phenomenon, I am focusing on the possibilities of manoeuvre offered to critics when publishing under a pseudonym, and their judgement by the recipient communities of that period. Based on the foregoing, publishing under a pseudonym can also be interpreted as a means to exploit opportunities of critical expression, while analysing this practice will unveil the relation between the values of literature and criticism of the period in question as well as their status, phases of their institutionalisation, let alone uninstitutionalisation, relations of power and interests in the world of literature as well as the endeavours of critics to build their careers. It is foreseeable that understanding the relation between pseudonymisation and criticism itself may modulate our perception of the mindset of Hungarian literary criticism as presented in the relevant literature, and it can highlight the process of institutionalisation from a new perspective.

A hazai nyilvános kritika meghonosodása és intézményesülése egy a 18. század utolsó harmadától az 1830-as évekig tartó folyamat eredménye. A recenzió intézményesülésének utolsó fázisát a Bajza József által szerkesztett Kritikai Lapokhoz kötöm, mivel ez volt az első olyan hazai sajtótermék, amely a foucault-i értelemben vett panoptizmus igényével lépett fel a korabeli nyilvánosságban. Ezt a hosszú időszakot számos vita kísérte, amely a kritika irodalmi intézménynek szerepét és célját érintette. Az 1810-es évektől kezdve az 1830-as évekig kialakuló kritikai gyakorlat mellett összegző igényű elméleti írások sora jelent meg, amelyek elsődleges célja a recenzióírás kérdéseinek tisztázása volt. Ezek közül a kritikusi névhasználat kérdésére hívja fel a figyelmet a ∆ áljelű szerző (Prepeliczay Sámuel) az 1823-as cikkében, amelyben a szerző a névtelenséget olyan kulcsfontosságú problémaként érzékelte, amely – véleménye szerint – megoldást kínálhat a recenzióról szóló korabeli vitás kérdésekre.

A kritika az általam vizsgált korszakban vitatott műfajnak számított, annak ellenére, hogy a korabeli értelmezők körében az a deklarált konszenzus uralkodott, hogy a műfaj elsődleges feladata az írók és az olvasók tanítása, amely mellett jelentősnek tekinthetők a recenzió ízlésnemesítő, archiváló, kanonizáló, a nemzet kulturális termékeinek megismertetését szolgáló illetve karrierépítő funkciói is. A kritikai beszédmódhoz kapcsolódó bíráló stílus azonban az értelmezőközösségek egy részéből visszatetszést váltott ki, ami a kritika népszerűtlenségéhez és elítéléséhez vezetett. Mindez arra sarkallta a kritikusokat, hogy kijelentéseiket a rendelkezésükre álló fórumokon különböző szerzői névhasználati gyakorlatok segítségével tegyék meg. A kritikusi névhasználat adta változatos lehetőségek kiszélesítették a korabeli recenzens számára adott, szűk játékteret. Ezt a jelenséget figyelembe véve dolgozatomban arra helyezem a hangsúlyt, hogy a szerzői névhasználat milyen mozgási lehetőségeket biztosított a recenzens számára, és ezeket a manővereket hogyan ítélték meg a korabeli értelmezőközösségek. Ezek alapján a névhasználatot a kritikusi beszédlehetőség kihasználásának eszközeként is lehet értelmezni, ugyanakkor a gyakorlat elemzése rálátást enged az irodalom és a kritika korabeli értékviszonyaira, státuszára, intézményesülésének vagy éppen intézménytelenedésének fokozataira, a literatúra világának hatalmi és érdekviszonyaira valamint a recenzensek karrierépítési törekvéseire. Ezek alapján sejthető, hogy a szerzői névhasználat és a recenzió kapcsolatának megértése árnyalhatja a hazai irodalomkritikai
gondolkodásról alkotott, a szakirodalomban rögzült képünket, és egy új nézőpontból világíthat rá a bírálat intézményesülésének folyamatára.

The main objective of this paper is to examine the understanding of the natio Hungarica, as it emerges from the texts and images of a number of richly illustrated Hungarian books. The Chronicon pictum (ca. 1358), János Thuróczy’s Chronica Hungarorum (Brno, Augsburg, 1488), Mausoleum regum et Ungariae ducum (Nuremberg, 1664), Trophaeum domus Estorasianae (Vienna, 1700) and Clarissimorum Hungariae heroum icones (Vienna, 1652) served as points of reference for the discussion on the ways in which the Hungarian political community wanted to be and was perceived prior to its eighteenth- and nineteenth-century transformation into a modern nation.

The study encompasses the formative period of Hungarian illustrated books that contributed to the formulation of the national imagery in Hungary, based on the ethno-genetic myths, memories of shared ancestry and collective past, cultural values, legal code, customs and models of conduct, modes of self-display, and, last but not least, on the imagery of the homeland. The three-and-a-half-century chronological scope of the study has made it possible to trace the major changes which the concept of natio Hungarica underwent between mid-fourteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The aim of this contribution is to summarize the avalible resources on Béni Egressy and analyse them on the basis of the main group of sources, that is, information gained from the school registers.
