We generated genome-wide data from 69 Europeans who lived between 8,000-3,000 years ago by enriching ancient DNA libraries for a target set of almost four hundred thousand polymorphisms. Enrichment of these positions decreases the sequencing required for genome-wide ancient DNA analysis by a median of around 250-fold, allowing us to study an order of magnitude more individuals than previous studies and to obtain new insights about the past. We show that the populations of western and far eastern Europe followed opposite trajectories between 8,000-5,000 years ago. At the beginning of the Neolithic period in Europe, ~8,000-7,000 years ago, closely related groups of early farmers appeared in Germany, Hungary, and Spain, different from indigenous hunter-gatherers, whereas Russia was inhabited by a distinctive population of hunter-gatherers with high affinity to a ~24,000 year old Siberian6. "Resumen: el objetivo de esta monografía es el estudio de las inscripciones paleohispánicas (celtibéricas e ibéricas), prestando especial atención a sus soportes. Esta perspectiva es particularmente pertinente en el análisis de inscripciones redactadas en lenguas conocidas de forma parcial, como son el ibérico y el celtibérico, pues el material empleado y la forma del soporte ‒generalmente dependiente de modelos clásicos (griegos y romanos)‒ se revela como la mejor clave para acometer su interpretación, ya que permite delimitar el contenido del texto, precisar su función comunicativa (pública o privada) y valorar la cultura epigráfica de la que forman parte. La investigación previa ha empleado este tipo de aproximación, aunque no la ha explotado en profundidad, pues se ha dedicado de forma preferente a los problemas lingüísticos.
El libro se centra en tres materiales empleados como soporte de inscripciones: piedra, bronce y cerámica; el trabajo incluye tres catálogos que reúnen los epígrafes sobre piedra, las estampillas y las téseras de hospitalidad celtibéricas.


Riassunto: scopo di quest’opera è lo studio delle iscrizioni paleohispaniche (celtiberiche e iberiche), prestando speciale attenzione ai loro supporti. Tale prospettiva di analisi è specialmente interessante in questo caso, già che gli epigrafi analizzati sono stati iscritti in “lingue frammentarie”. Perciò, il materiale impiegato e la forma del supporto (in genere dipendente da modelli classici) costituiscono un ottima chiave per la loro interpretazione, già che permettono di determinare i contenuti dei testi, di precisare la loro funzione communicativa (pubblica o privata) e di valorare la cultura epigrafica alla quale appartengono. Finora, e malgrado il suo interesse, questo metodo di studio non è stato mai applicato in proffondità dalle ricerche previe, che privilegiavano l’analisi dei problemi linguistici.
Concretamente, la monografia si occupa di tre materiali impiegati come supporti epigrafici: pietra, bronzo e ceramica. Così, lo studio si basa su tre cataloghi dove si è raccolto il materiale disponibile, che nel caso del bronzo e della ceramica, riguardano esclusivamente tesserae hospitales e bolli, rispettivamente.


Abstract: the subject of this work, as stated in the title, was Iberian and Celtiberian inscriptions on stone, bronze and ceramic. The approach, focused on the study of the support, was particularly interesting and useful as the texts were written in little known languages. The material used and the shape of the support, generally reliant on Greek and Roman models, turned out to be the best key for their interpretation, because they allow us to establish the possible contents of the inscriptions; determine whether their purpose was to serve as public or private communication and to consider the epigraphic culture they belong to as well as the uses of writing in Iberian and Celtiberian societies. Besides, the creation of catalogues with the three joint types of inscriptions (inscriptions on stone, celtiberian tesserae hospitales and stamps) has enabled us to establish typologies and has served as the basis to study their iconography. Furthermore, the direct work with inscriptions has resulted in proposals of new readings and interpretations for some of them. "

Les arbres remarquables comme le chêne, le châtaignier, le bouleau et autres essences marquent fréquemment d'une façon spécifique la toponymie. Cette présence fait l'objet d'ailleurs d'une étude spécifique de cet ouvrage. Mais il existe bien sûr également des termes plus généraux dans les appellations des noms de lieux relatant la présence de bois et de forêts. Ces termes peuvent se regrouper en trois séries distinctes. Tout d'abord, une série désignant la forêt au sens large, et nous trouvons ici les termes abondants descendants du latin médiéval boscus, d'origine germanique, qui a donné le français « bois », ainsi que les appellatifs, moins nombreux, issus du latin silva. Dans cette série, nous rangerons également les toponymes que nous proposons provenir du celtique *vidu « bois ». Cette interprétation permettant d'expliquer l'abondance anormale des appellations du type bois vieux, vieux bois, bos vieux, où il nous paraît que le terme « vieux » ne doit pas être compris comme l'adjectif au sens de « ancien », mais provient de l'évolution linguistique de *vidu qui n'a plus été comprise. Une deuxième série est caractérisée par le fait que la forêt est désignée par une métonymie, c'est à dire que l'ensemble des arbres est assimilé soit à un ensemble de branches (latin médiéval branca, et garna), un ensemble de feuilles (latin fŏlĭum et celtique *dula) ou un ensemble de fûts (latin fustis). La troisième série concerne les toponymes issus du celtique *volto « chevelure » et qui sont les désignations métaphoriques des arbres, ceux-ci étant comparés à des entités chevelues du fait de leurs feuillages. Cette racine celtique se retrouve dans les appellations issues du latin médiéval gaudus, passé en occitan sous la forme gâoudo désignant la forêt. Toutes les interprétations proposées pour les différents toponymes relevés sont toujours documentées par une référence bibliographique qui fait l'objet d'un renvoi en note de bas de page. La profusion des cours d'eau, des sources et des marais dans le paysage de la Corrèze a laissé une trace importante dans la toponymie au travers des appellations qui évoquent la végétation qui se complet dans les sols humides. Ce sont donc l'osier, les roseaux, l'iris des marais, le cresson d'eau, le jonc, l'aulne, le peuplier blanc, le saule, qui sont à l'honneur dans ce chapitre au travers de différentes racines issues du celtique, du latin, du germanique reprises le plus souvent par l'occitan. Il arrive que l'interprétation à faire des appellations relatives à cette végétation a été oublié, c'est le cas du toponyme Estorts, issu du latin stŏrěa « natte de jonc » et qui désigne d'une façon particulièrement imagée un territoire recouvert de joncs. Parfois le sens de ces appellations a fait l'objet d'une attribution par trop abusive à un personnage supposé, comme par exemple pour les trop nombreux toponymes Juillac qui ne peuvent être tous d'anciens « domaines de Julius », mais sont tout simplement des parcelles marécageuses où le jonc abonde, ces appellations étant en fait issues du latin médiéval gulia désignant le jonc. Sur le même thème des attributions patronymiques hasardeuses, on peut douter des interprétations relatives à de supposés « domaines d'Albert », pour des toponymes comme Laubertie, l'Aubertie, ou Puyaubert car le latin médiéval albareta bien attesté et désignant un « endroit planté de peupliers blanc » nous incite à penser que ces toponymes décrivent d'anciennes parcelles boisées par cette essence végétale. Il arrive également que le sens des toponymes soit confondu avec un autre terme de consonance similaire, c'est le cas des innombrables Rosiers, issus par le germanique du latin médiéval rosaria et rosetum et désignant une terre couverte de roseaux, que l'on interprète faussement comme des « jardins remplis de roses, des roseraies », et on admettra facilement que le ruisseau le Roseix, ne peut être que le ruisseau des roseaux et non des roses. On trouve également d'une façon systématique dans les études réalisées une interprétation des toponymes du type la Vigerie comme étant des possessions d'un vigier, c'est-à-dire d'un agent seigneurial chargé au moyen âge de percevoir des redevances. Le nombre impressionnant des toponymes de cette famille (la Vigère, Vigier) conduit à penser qu'il s'agit en fait de parcelles couvertes d'osier car issus de l'occitan vijhêiro « oseraie ». D'autres thèmes concernant ces végétaux des bords des cours d'eau et des marais n'ont pas fait l'objet jusqu'à présent d'identifications. Il s'agit par exemple de l'iris des marais, en occitan flambo, d'où Femblat autrefois Flambat, du saule marsault en ancien français bourseau, d'où Bourzat. Toutes les interprétations proposées pour les différents toponymes relevés sont toujours documentées par une référence bibliographique qui fait l'objet d'un renvoi en note de bas de page. A word-by-word explanation of the translation of the so-called creation hymn of Rigveda. The translation is very different from traditional ones.

As I demonstrate, the hymn has been completely misunderstood by previous translators.

The hymn has nothing to do with the origin or creation of the Universe. It is in fact, simply a prayer to God.

Jacob Grimm and the Lithuanian Language - I. Studies and Correspondence

This article summarizes Jacob Grimm’s research on the Baltic languages and cultures, Lithuanian in particular. Although Grimm never published an exclusive textbook on this subject, throughout his life he researched the genetic relationship between Lithuanian and the Germanic and Slavonic languages and certain aspects of Baltic literature and culture. The starting point for his interest was his reading of Rasmus Kristian Rask’s "Undersögelse om det gamle Nordiske eller Islandske Sprogs Oprindelse" (Kopenhagen 1818). In 1822, in his new edition of the "Deutsche Grammatik", he also used Lithuanian as a cognate language to establish the First Germanic Sound Shift, which became famous as Grimm’s law. At this time, Grimm’s interest in Baltic languages also became apparent in his scholarly correspondence with the important German philologists Georg Friedrich Benecke and Karl Lachmann, in which he discussed issues of Lithuanian and the Old Prussian language and related specialist literature. As early as 1824, Grimm drew attention to a possible closer genetic relationship between the Baltic, Slavonic, and Germanic languages. Thanks to his rich annotations in his Lithuanian books, one can observe that Grimm read and understood Lithuanian fluently. The East Prussian promoters and collectors of Volkspoesie, Ferdinand Gottschalk and Cornelius Roose, wrote letters to Jacob Grimm that are published in this article for the first time, and also sent him collections of Lithuanian Volkspoesie. Jacob Grimm received contemporary baltistic specialist literature by Friedrich Kurschat, Georg Heinrich Ferdinand Nesselmann, and August Schleicher. The results of Grimm´s Baltic studies were published, e.g.,
in his "Deutsche Grammatik" or in reviews. When he began work on the Deutsches Wörterbuch 1851/52, he was able to participate at a high level in baltistic specialist discourse.

Si les grands cours d'eau et les belles rivières comme la Corrèze, la Dordogne, la Vézère possèdent un nom qui leur est propre, il en va différemment pour les innombrables ruisselets, canaux, rigoles, et autres biefs de la Corrèze. Pourtant la présence de ces petits cours d'eau sert bien souvent en toponymie à caractériser une parcelle, et sont le plus souvent à l'origine d'appellations dont le sens a été oublié. Parfois il est vrai, ces appellations se font sans beaucoup d'originalité, c'est le cas pour les très nombreux descendants du latin ăqua « eau », rīvus « rivière », gutta « goutte d'eau » … D'autres termes par contre, font appel à une caractéristique ressentie par ces cours d'eau qui peuvent être qualifiés de « purs, limpides », comme la Glane, dont l'appellation est issue d'une racine celtique. Ils peuvent être également qualifiés par la sonorité de l'écoulement des eaux comme la Couze avec une origine indo-européenne, ou par la vivacité des eaux comme dans le toponyme le Saillant. Un nombre important de ces appellations est relatif à la présence ancienne de canaux, de biefs de moulin, ou de simples rigoles d'irrigation des prés ayant pour antécédent des origines multiples et parfois obscures que seules quelques formes dialectales répertoriées permettent d'identifier. L'objet de ce chapitre est donc, au travers des différentes origines, latines, occitanes, gauloises, indoeuropéennes, de retracer le panorama de la présence dans la toponymie de la Corrèze de ces modestes cours d'eau. A fresh and original translation from Sanskrit of the dashrajnya hymn (hymn 7.18 of Rig Veda) describing this defining battle between Aryan king Sudas and his Aryan as well as non-Aryan foes. The decisive battle led to the uprooting of many tribes from the Sapta Sindhu area.

Many existing beliefs are shown to be merely due to misunderstandings. Further, it is shown that the existing translations fall well short of the true meaning.
For example, no Matsya tribe was involved in this battle.

Durante muchos años, la lingüística ha sido básicamente lingüística histórica. Basada en el método comparativo de búsqueda sistemática de similitudes léxicas y fonéticas, su objetivo era estudiar la evolución y el parentesco de las lenguas para reconstruir el árbol filogenético completo, desde la raíz hasta la copa. Lo inquietante es, sin embargo, que la conceptualización arbórea de las lenguas está muy alejada de la realidad. Si reflexionamos un poco, nos daremos cuenta de que esta división en categorías no tiene una base objetiva, sino ideológica. Las migraciones y los árboles lingüísticos son la historia única que nos han contado y que hemos aceptado como verdad. Nuevas generaciones de arqueólogos, genetistas y lingüistas están trabajando para establecer un nuevo marco teórico basado en la idea de continuidad, antigüedad y estabilidad de las lenguas que obligará a mapear las lenguas de Europa en una cronología mucho mayor.

Hittite, in particular, and Anatolian, in general, encompasses both new insights and obscurantism.  Some point to African (‘Egyptian’) origin, others to Balkan and still some point, putatively and specifically, to Oromo-Cush origin. The general aim of this paper is to comparatively analyze Hittite and Oromo phonological, lexical and grammatical items. Hittite and Oromo, as well as, for historical and areal reasons, some Egyptian and (Proto-)Indo-European ((P-)IE), corpora are collected and comparatively analyzed. The results show significant level of phonological, lexical and grammatical resemblances. A large number of these are shared not only between and among the latter two but also Egyptian lexemes and (P-)IE roots and aspirates and pharyngeal reconstructions. The paper presents, in Section 1, the debates about the Ancient African and Anatolian relations will be briefly highlighted, justifying the causes of this study. In Section 2, comparative analysis and discussion of the data will be presented. In the final section, Section 3, conclusion and implications are drawn.

This paper is intended for scholars who would like to evaluate the theory that Basque ultimately derives from Indo-European, but find published evidence on this subject either too complex (my JIES paper) or too terse (my self-published dictionary).
This paper therefore provides a linear, step-by-step introduction to this theory, in four stages:
1. an overview of Pre-Basque, as reconstructed by Michelena and Trask;
2. a gradual illustration of the most secure Indo-European etymologies of Pre-Basque basic lexicon (with intermediate lists of corresponding sound laws);
3. a list of less obvious etymologies;
4. a summary of sound laws.
This linear organization of the subject matter should enable scholars to evaluate the theory in a matter of hours, without going through the painstaking details, cross-references and revisions in the JIES paper.

Me refiero al Altaico: *mórV ‘caballo’, que vemos en el Indoeuropeo: *mark– ‘caballo’, el cual pasa a las lenguas germánicas como *márx-a-/*marg-á- ‘corcel’ de las que derivan el Alemán: mähre ‘yegua’ y el Noruego: merr ‘yegua’, el Inglés: mare ‘yegua’ y todas las restantes formas germánicas para dicho término. Mientras que por otra parte el mismo IE: *mark– pasa a las lenguas célticas como el Galo: mark– ‘caballo’ (acc. markan) y marco, el Irlandés: marc ‘caballo’, el Címbrico (escocés): march ‘caballo’ y el Bretón: marh ‘yegua’. Pero no hallamos en la familia urálica ninguna forma pariente del Altaico: *mórV ni del Indoeuropeo: *mark-. Las lenguas urálicas tienen para el ‘caballo’ un término propio y exclusivo que no comparten con ninguna otra familia de lenguas, tal término es el Proto-Urálico: *luwV (*luɣV) ‘caballo’...

This is certainly a highly speculative paper, which may, for some Indoeuropeanists, even fulfill the criteria for the "si tacuisses"-exclamation. Unfortunately, there are some misprints, I hope I found the most damaging ones and marked them in the text.

این مقاله به روش کتابخانه اي به بررسی رده شناسانه ادبیات تبری پرداخته و تلاش دارد آنها را در سه دوره طبقه بندی نماید: دوره کهن که از سال های اولیه قرن یکم قمری آغاز می شود و مشتمل بر آثاری در بازیابی اسطوره های باستانی و احیای فرهنگ پهلوانی ست، دوره میانه که پس از سلطه متشرعین در قرن هشتم قمری آغاز می شود و بیشتر بر کلام دینی دلالت دارد، و دوره نو شامل آثار شرق شناسان و پژوهش های مربوط به آنها که پس از ورود مستشرقین از قرن نوزدهم میلادی آغاز می شود. در دوره کهن قدمت آثار بازمانده از ادبیات تبرستان به قرن چهارم قمری بازمی گردد. برخی از آثار این زبان نه تنها در زمره آثار فاخر ادبیات ایران قرار دارند بلکه بر زبان فارسی تاثیر نیز گذاشته اند. «باید گفت بیشتر پدیده ها، آثار خطی و نوشتاری زبان تبری، در گذر هزاره ها و سده ها به سبب تاراج بیگانگان از یک سو و از سوی دیگر به سبب نابخردی و بی کفایتی و درگیری های پیوسته اسپهبدان، امیران و ملوک تیره های بومی، به دست نابودی سپرده شد» (نصری اشرفی، 27:1377). در دوره میانه و در قرون بعد، پس از بحران¬هایی نظیر براندازی امیرنشین های محلی به دست شاه صفوی، مرگ فخرالدوله حسن و فروپاشی خاندان باوند و در پی آن سلطه سادات مرعشی، ادبیات تبری دچار دگرگونی شد، مرعشی ها به زبان تبری چندان اعتنا نداشتند و بیشتر به زبان عربی توجه می کردند. در این دوره با کوچ اجباری گرجی ها، ارمنی ها و اقوام دیگر ساختار جمعیتی این منطقه در هم می ریزد و زبان تبری دستخوش تغییرات بیشتری می شود. دوره نو مشتمل بر آثار شرق شناسان و پژوهش های مربوط به آنها از قرن نوزدهم میلادی تا آثار معاصر تبری است. با ورود به دوران جدید و پژوهش های روشنفکران تبری در ادبیات تبری، و همچنین ورود خاورشناسان و جهانگردان غیرایرانی به ایران و مطالعه و پژوهش های آنها در آثار کهن و میانه تبری، آثار نو زبان تبری تولید شده اند
