Interlinguistics

Esperanto is neither an official nor a commonly spoken language anywhere in the world and, due to the limited number of people who speak this language from birth and who teach it to the next generation, the persistence of this speech community cannot rely on intergenerational language transmission. Based on a year of ethnographic fieldwork in France, mainly in Paris, this article explores continuities and discontinuities in the Esperanto community and movement by looking at how present-day young Esperanto speakers use the language online and through networks of sociability. In asking what is transmitted from one generation of Esperanto speakers to the next, and how new communication technologies impact the ways in which people use the language, I analyse how the concentration of speakers from different age groups around distinct technologies creates a segmentation in this community that leaves some issues incommunicable and hard to transmit. I argue that, on the one hand, engaging with Esperanto through Esperanto associations and, on the other hand, through social media and non-institutionalised gatherings, shapes different perceptions of the language, marking a shift from Esperanto as a forward-looking cause for activists to Esperanto as a tool for sociability and an intellectual game for language-lovers.

Nel Novecento, la massificazione della cultura attraverso opere letterarie, fumetti, cinema e TV si è verificata in un periodo molto delicato per l’unificazione linguistica e culturale italiana, che ha visto grandi e rapidi cambiamenti. Nel XXI secolo la globalizzazione crescente, con il passaggio dalla “civiltà dell’immagine” alla “società della comunicazione”, ha fatto registrare un forte aumento delle traduzioni, soprattutto dall’inglese. Se oggi la maggioranza dei testi che leggiamo e dei film che guardiamo è frutto di traduzioni, a che tipo di italiano siamo esposti? E quali saranno gli effetti sulla competenza dei parlanti e sul futuro della nostra lingua? Partendo dalla teoria degli “universali traduttivi”, il libro illustra gli studi che identificano il “traduttese” e lo confrontano con le caratteristiche dei testi prodotti direttamente in italiano.

Since the Esperanto speech community cannot rely on intergenerational transmission to guarantee its long-term continuity, the Esperanto movement has emerged as an attempted solution to stabilise the community by promoting the language and encouraging continuous engagement with it. In this sense, one of the most interesting wings of the current neutral Esperanto movement in Europe is the political party Europe-Democracy-Esperanto (EDE), which puts forward candidates for the European Parliamentary elections and uses their election campaigns as a platform to promote the language. Through a socio-anthropological approach, based on long-term fieldwork carried out among Esperanto speakers and supporters in France, this work explores some aspects of EDE’s actions, focusing on a controversy: how can a political party be neutral? From this initial interrogation, the diverse definitions of neutrality held by Esperantists will be explored as a means to approach the question of how a concept of neutral politics can be strategically mobilised as a tool in the discussion among this party’s members. Also examined is how the outcomes of this party’s actions are seen by its members in terms of success and failure, and how the issue of neutrality and political engagement reappears in this discussion.

Ĉar la Esperanta lingvokomunumo ne povas kalkuli je laŭgeneracia transdono garantianta ĝian daŭron, la Esperanto-movado aperas kiel provo stabiligi tiun komunumon varbante por la lingvo kaj instigante okupiĝadi pri ĝi. Tiusence unu el la plej interesaj frakcioj de la neŭtrala Esperanto-movado estas la politika partio Eŭropo-Demokratio-Esperanto (EDE), kiu startigas kandidatojn por la balotoj al la Eŭropunia Parlamento kaj utiligas la balotajn kampanjojn por reklami la lingvon. Per soci-antropologia aliro kaj bazita sur longdaŭra kampolaboro inter parolantoj kaj subtenantoj de Esperanto en Francujo, mi esploros kelkajn aspektojn de la agado de EDE, kun speciala atento al la disputo, kiel politika partio povas resti neŭtrala? De tiu unua demando mi esploros la diversajn difinojn de neŭtraleco troveblajn ĉe la Esperantistoj, kiel maniero aliri la demandon, kiel koncepto de neŭtrala politiko estas strategie utiligata kiel helpilo en la diskutoj inter la partianaro. Mi krome esploros, kiel la rezultoj de la partia agado estas perceptataj de la membroj rilate sukceson kaj malsukceson, kaj kiel la problemo de neŭtraleco kaj politika engaĝiĝo reaperas en tiu diskuto.

In questo contributo si intende presentare il ruolo dell'Accademia di Esperanto nelI'evoluzione della lingua lanciata da Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof nel 1887. Tranne pochi specialisti appartenenti alla comunità dei parlanti la lingua, ben pochi si sono posti la domandadi come sia stato e sia possibile pianificare una lingua pianificata, e in che misura.

Although a relatively minor project in terms of its impact on the broader international language movement, Basic English is interesting for the elaborate semiotic theory that lies behind it. The creator of Basic, Charles Kay Ogden (1889–1957), is today remembered chiefly as co-author of The Meaning of Meaning, a book widely regarded as a classic of early twentieth-century semiotics. In this paper, we engage in a critical examination of the design of Basic and demonstrate how it essentially represents an implementation of the key doctrines set out in that book, tempered by the practical exigencies of language construction. We focus on Ogden’s method of ‘panoptic conjugation’, which he used to select the Basic core vocabulary of 850 words, as well as his conception of the grammar of Basic as an outgrowth of its vocabulary. We observe additionally how Ogden’s approach does not result in a self-contained, independent international language, but rather a language that is subservient to Standard English idiom.

This book is the result of the Lecture Notes produced for the class ‘Introduction to Interlinguistics’ held at the University of Amsterdam during my first mandate as Special Chair holder there (2014-2019). This means that the intended readers are my students, who may come from the Humanities, such as English Studies or Philosophy, as well as from more formally oriented curricula, such as Logic or Artificial Intelligence.

The international auxiliary language Esperanto is probably the best known constructed language in the world, but also one of the most heavily criticised ones. Although it was meant to solve the problem of international understanding, there is still widespread and excessive criticism on Esperantoʼs account by lay people and linguists alike who think it actually cannot solve it and who, for various reasons, consider it linguistically inferior to their native tongues. As a result, this paper deals with the reasons behind the unpopularity of Esperanto, well-known critics of Esperanto, and widely proposed changes to its most criticised points. It closely examines 16 common structural ʻflawsʼ of the language at the orthographic, phonologic, morphologic, semantic and syntactic level, trying to show that there are still significant knowledge deficits behind these persistent objections. It has to be pointed out that all the criticised structural characteristics in this paper are dealt with objectively and scientifically, trying to show that all languages can come under close scrutiny as Esperanto often does. However, we are well aware that natural languages do not conform to the same rules and objections as planned languages still do.

Il contributo esamina la storia linguistica più antica del merid. scalfare con lo scopo di discuterne la probabile trafila etimologica (prestito d’origine galloromanza o voce patrimoniale?) non solo alla luce di aspetti formali ma anche alla luce della distribuzione delle testimonianze nei testi dei secc. XIII-XV. Se ne valuta la semantica e la condizione di concorrenza e convivenza con altre voci semanticamente affini
(con particolare riguardo a scaldare, voce patrimoniale scarsamente attestata nei più antichi testi meridionali); si indagano inoltre le possibili relazioni con riferimenti testuali occitanici. Si punta a sondare la percezione linguistica che accompagna l’uso di scalfare nelle antiche attestazioni pervenute. L’indagine combina la prospettiva
diatestuale con la prospettiva storico-linguistica e geo-linguistica.

The paper examines the most ancient linguistic history of the merid. scalfare with the aim of discussing the probable etymological tradition (is it a Gallo-Romance loanword or a patrimonial linguistic item?) not only in the light of formal aspects but also in the light of the distribution of the ancient evidences in the texts of the XIII-XV centuries. It evaluates the semantics of the word and the condition of competition and coexistence with other semantically similar items (with particular
regard to scaldare, a patrimonial item rarely attested in the most ancient southern texts); the paper investigates also the possible relationships of the ancient Italian occurrences with Occitan textual models. It aims to probe the linguistic perception that accompanies the use of scalfare in the ancient documentation received. The investigation combines the diatestual perspective with the historical-linguistic and geo-linguistic perspective.

This book evaluates the applicability of the linguistic worldview framework to the analysis of artificial languages and presents the limitations of such an approach. The following research conclusions were formulated: 1. Artificial languages are not a homogeneous group, and their various characteristics necessitate different perspectives in the application of the framework. 2. The binary division between artificial and natural languages is disproved; a scale of naturalness/artificiality is proposed. 3. The language which may be treated as natural is undoubtedly Esperanto. 4. Any study of artificial languages within this framework needs to take into account transfer from other languages known to the respondents as well as cultural influences. The existence of a linguistic worldview typical of Esperanto and presented consistently in the following areas was proved: cultural concepts related to the Movement and stereotype of an Esperantist.

This report aims at offering an interdisciplinary analytical overview of the literature on the notion of “linguistic justice” and more generally fairness in multilingual contexts. It focuses the biggest part of its attention on political philosophy, but it presents also several contributions from economics, sociolinguistics, interlinguistics and law. The purpose of this report is neither to assess the internal consistency of alternative (and often contrasting) theories, nor to try to find a common ground among them. Its goal is to emphasize the policy recommendations that derive from different approaches. The report also discusses how different theories or approaches to linguistic justice have been applied to the case of the management of multilingualism in the European Union.

The main objective of the present dissertation was to evaluate the applicability of the theory and practice developed within the methodological framework of the so-called Ethnolinguistic School of Lublin to the linguistic analysis of artificial languages and to present the limitations of such an approach.
The following research conclusions were formulated:
1. Artificial languages are not a homogeneous group, and their various characteristics necessitate different perspectives in the application of the Lublin paradigm.
2. The binary division between artificial and natural languages is disproved; a scale of naturalness/artificiality is proposed.
3. The language which may be treated as natural within the Ethnolinguistic School of Lublin is undoubtedly Esperanto.
4. Any study of artificial languages within this paradigm needs to take into account a transfer from other languages known to the respondents as well as cultural influences.
The existence of a linguistic worldview typical of Esperanto and presented consistently in the following areas was proved:
• cultural concepts related to the Movement
• stereotype of an Esperantist.

Enguany l’editorial Pagès ha publicat dos llibres molt recomanables a la «Col·lecció Divèrsia»: Breu història de l’esperantisme als Països Catalans, de Xavier Margais; i Breu història de l’anarquisme als Països Catalans, de Dolors Marín Silvestre i Jordi Martí i Font. Evidentment, essent històries reduïdes, no poden tractar-ho tot. Aquest text té la intenció de complementar-los, buscant-hi possibles sinergies, encara que sigui telegràficament. I és que, fins a cert punt, l’anarquisme és un fet diferencial de l’esperantisme a les nostres contrades, de la mateixa manera que l’esperanto és probablement un dels fets diferencials de l’anarquisme català. Sylvia Pankhurst was a pioneering figure of socialist feminism who advocated for universal suffrage and against war. Less well-known is her involvement in the movement for an international auxiliary language. In 1927, Pankhurst published a booklet, Delphos. The Future of International Language, where she expressed the growing need for a world auxiliary language and her support for Interlingua. A biographically informed study of Delphos informs us about the modernist, cosmopolitan and democratic vocation of the international auxiliary language movement in the early 20th century. Indeed, Pankhurst’s views on the motivation and principles of an interlanguage-to-come are widely shared by the community, and can be found in her contemporaries as well as predecessors and followers, such as Zamenhof, Couturat, Ogden or Hogben. We present Pankhurst’s support for Interlingua as an example of this scientific humanism that dominated the beginnings of interlinguistics, and relate her language activism to her socialist and pacifist stand.

Georgo Deŝkin (1891-1967) kalkuleblas inter la malĉefaj voĉoj de la Soveta Skolo. En ĉi tiu artikolo mi provas analizi liajn tri poemarojn, la verkoteknikojn kaj influojn troveblajn en ili, kaj la manieron, kiel drame ŝanĝiĝanta vivo markis lian poezion.

Georgo Deŝkin (1891-1967) is one of the less known writers of the soviet school of the Esperanto literature. In this paper I try to analyze his three poem books, his writing techniques and influences, and the way his dramatic changing life marked his poetry.

Estus atendeble, ke la semantika kampo de la seksorganoj havas la samajn trajtojn kiel aliaj semantikaj kampoj, sed la socia premo kondiĉigas ĝian formiĝon. Tiel, en ĝi grave rolas metaforoj, en kiuj la koncerna termino estas anstataŭita de alia, sena je la negativaj konotacioj de la tabua vorto. En ĉi tiu laboraĵo mi analizas la kreadon de verkaj metaforoj en la kampo de seksorganoj en du verkoj de la esperanta literaturo.

Seria esperável que o campo semántico dos órgaos sexuais tivesse as mesmas caraterísticas que outros campos semánticos, porém a pressom social condiciona a sua formaçom. Destarte, nel jogam um importante papel as metáforas em que o termo em questom é substituído por outro desprovisto das conotações negativas da palavra tabu. Neste trabalho analiso a criaçom de metáforas no campo dos órgaos sexuais em duas obras da literatura em esperanto.

It might be expected that the semantic field of sexual organs would have the same features as any other semantic field; nevertheless, its formation can be conditioned by social pressure. Thus, metaphors in which the term concerned is replaced by another one without the negative connotations of the tabooed word plays an important role. In this paper I analyse the creation of metaphors in the field of sexual organs in two works of the Esperanto literature.

At the turn of the twentieth century, debates surrounding the possibility of an auxiliary language were a main topic of international discussion, including the support of various Nobel Prize winners. Esperanto became an essential part of internationalism. In the absence of other types of transnational associations, Esperantists provided direct contact to different groups. Railway workers, doctors, vegetarians, Freemasons, Catholics, scientists, scouts, lawyers and pacifists of different nations took advantage of the Esperanto congresses to meet and debate. Their dimension as pioneers is highlighted by the fact that in some cases they created associations in absence of any other means of international contact between them. Moreover, encouraged by the possibilities offered by the neutral language, audacious individuals decided to embark on adventurous trips on foot, on horseback or by bicycle.

Esperanto’s expansion finished because of the war, a traumatic experience for all ideals of brotherhood and solidarity. Mostly pacifists, Esperantists had to adapt to the new context. They performed humanitarian acts in collaboration with the Red Cross, and they carried out information services via Esperanto publications. But what would have happened if there had been no war? Would diplomatic relations have been fraternized? Would a network of friendly cities have spread? Could a more humane economic system have been achieved?

This paper examines the relation of C. K. Ogden's Basic English (BE) to early analytic philosophy. Ogden's engagement in the movement for an international auxiliary language (IAL) will be related to his affiliation to empiricist and analytic traditions in philosophy of language. The need to develop an alternative language in order to overcome the misleading common-sense ontology is shared with several early founders of analytic philosophy such as Frege, Russell and Carnap. While analytic philosophers chose formal languages to accomplish this critical task, Ogden had a more pragmatic approach and proceeded to restructure an existing language (English) for international communication. A study of BE's philosophical background reveals influences of empiricists and analytic philosophers on various language planning movements of the first half of the 20th century.

Malsame ol centoj da similaj lingvo-projektoj, Esperanto iĝis vivanta lingvo, kiu travivis la morton de ĝia iniciatinto. Laŭ kelkaj fakuloj, tio ŝuldas al la fakto, ke ĝi enhavas etikajn valorojn, kiuj ebligis ĝiajn subtenantojn venki malfacilajn momentojn de dividoj kaj persekutoj. Tio estas, Zamanhof postlasis sian homisman kaj pacisman sintenon al socia movado kreita de la apogantoj de tiu ĉi internacia lingvo. Komprenita diversmaniere, tiu interna ideo influis politike en pluraj historiaj momentoj. Mi ne celas enciklopedie klarigi ĉiujn el ili. Tamen, mi prezentos aron da ekzemploj, kiuj kune montras kompleksan kaj nuanc-plenan soci-politikan bildon de la Esperanto-movado.

La strukturo de la artikolo estas jena. Unue, mi mencios la funkcion de Esperanto ene de la proleta movado. Due mi pritraktos la subpremadon, kiun multaj esperantistoj suferis en malsamaj diktaturoj. Trie, mi analizos iom pli detale la rolojn luditajn de tiu ĉi internacia lingvo dum la Hispana milito. Kvare, mi argumentos, ke esperantismo kaj pacismo estas tre proksimaj vortoj. Kvine, mi priskribos la humanan agadon de kelkaj esperantistoj, kiuj riskis siajn vivojn por konstrui mondon pli justan kaj dignan. Konklude,mi defendos, ke indas valorigi kaj de fakuloj, kaj de aktivuloj, la politikan dimension de Esperanto (kaj de ĝiaj subtenantoj).

Although now largely forgotten, the international language movement was, from the 1880s to the end of the Second World War, a matter of widespread public interest, as well as a concern of numerous scientists and scholars. The primary goal was to establish a language for international communication, but in the early twentieth century an increasing accent was placed on philosophical considerations: wanted was a language better suited to the needs of modern science and rational thought. In this paper, we examine the example of the English scholar C.K. Ogden's international language Basic English and his efforts to win the Vienna Circle philosophers Otto Neurath and Rudolf Carnap over to the project. Basic is shown to be an implementation of key ideas in Ogden's philosophy of language, ideas shared to a large extent with Neurath and Carnap. This we see through an examination of their unpublished correspondence, as well as through the collaboration that emerged between Ogden and Neurath, in which Neurath's Isotype, a system for graphically representing statistical data, became closely aligned with Basic. Through the ideas and endeavours we investigate here, we gain a new perspective on this crucial period in the history of analytic philosophy.

INTERLINGUISTICA
GENERALITA'
Con interlinguistica intendiamo quella settore della linguistica che studia le condizioni in cui si determina il contatto fra lingue e gli effetti che ne scaturiscono. Il contatto tra lingue di cui l'interlinguistica si occupa consiste nella sovrapposizione e combinazione degli idiomi interessati nell'uso fattone da parte di un parlante che ne abbia competenza: la coesistenza fianco a fianco di due o più lingue in uno stesso ambiente non è di per sé causa o condizione sufficiente del contatto, è indispensabile che ci sia almeno un individuo che conosca più lingue. Intendendo con lingua qualsiasi strumento di comunicazione ed espressione linguistica organizzata constatiamo che gli esseri umani sono in genere plurilingui. Il contatto linguistico è dunque la sovrapposizione di differenti codici nell'atto linguistico individuale e prende il nome di interferenza. L'interferenza può verificarsi sia nella lingua primaria che in quella secondaria e il fenomeno consiste nell'imitazione di un modello linguistico in un contesto diverso da quello di pertinenza: lingua-modello è quella che esercita l'interferenza, lingua-replica è quella che ne subisce gli effetti. Se l'interferenza si diffonde e viene fatta propria da altri parlanti, si avrà un'alterazione stabile della lingua-replica. Tra le forme più occasionali di interferenza si annovera il code-switching, ossia il passaggio involontario da un codice linguistico ad un altro nel corso dell'esecuzione di un messaggio. Meno fortuna hanno le interferenze nei tratti soprasegmentali (vd. intonazione) che, sentiti come conseguenza di esecuzione difettosa, difficilmente hanno successo. Nell'ambito di uno stesso contatto interlinguistico possono manifestarsi prestiti e calchi. Il prestito è il prodotto di una pedissequa imitazione: riproduce, oltre al significato del modello, anche il suo significante, non di rado con adattamenti drastici alle strutture della lingua replica. Perché si compia un prestito è sufficiente un grado molto basso di bilinguismo, può bastare la conoscenza approssimativa di qualche parola. ▲ Patata mediazione culturale spagnola lingue dell'America centrale. Il calco è invece il prodotto di un'imitazione che riguarda soltanto la struttura o l'articolazione del segno, la sua forma interna. Il calco richiede una buona conoscenza della lingua-modello e la capacità di analizzare la struttura del termine straniero. ▲ Ala: giocatore che si muove lungo le fasce laterali wing: ala di volatile (senso proprio) ma anche giocatore che si muove lungo le fasce laterali. Sull'interferenza non esistono cause deterministicamente intese. IL PRESTITO Il prestito consiste nella riproduzione di un elemento linguistico alloglotto nel duplice aspetto del significante e del significato. Dicendo che un prestito riguarda sempre anche il piano del significato, non si implica minimamente una perfetta aderenza alla semantica del modello. Innanzitutto si osserva spesso un restringimento di significato rispetto alla parola limitata e talvolta il significato della parola straniera risulta addirittura frainteso perché colui che ha compiuto l'interferenza è stato indotto ad attribuire al modello un senso improprio. Il prestito può essere diretto, quando avviene a seguito di contatti in aree mistilingui, oppure a distanza quando la conoscenza del modello si realizza attraverso rapporti occasionali, al di fuori delle eventuali aree di contatto. I prestiti diretti avvengono solitamente per via orale, mentre quelli a distanza risalgono a modelli scritti, origine che traspare attraverso il loro aspetto. Quando una lingua si trova a fare da intermediario tra altre due l'interferenza si manifesta attraverso prestiti mediati. Una tipologia particolare è infine costituita dai prestiti di ritorno in cui un originario prestito rientra nella lingua-modello di solito con pronuncia e accezione nuove, assunte nella lingua-replica. Non si possono considerare prestiti i derivati o i composti creati autonomamente con materiale di origine straniera. Nel procedimento del prestito la lingua-replica non si limita ad un ruolo puramente passivo, ma reagisce all'influsso esterno adattando il nuovo termine alle strutture indigene e integrandolo. Questo processo di assimilazione può assumere un duplice aspetto: l'acclimatamento, che va di pari passo con la familiarità che i parlanti acquisiscono nei riguardi del prestito e col progredire della relativa conoscenza, e l'integrazione, che si manifesta nell'adattamento del prestito alla grafia, alla fonologia, alla morfologia e infine al lessico della lingua che subisce gli effetti dell'interferenza. Spesso un prestito integrato anche acclimatato, ma non è detto che i due processi siano paralleli. L'integrazione si manifesta in due diverse forme: fonologica e lessicale. L'integrazione fonologica prevede il fenomeno della sostituzione, che si attualizza in modi diversi: 1. Sostituzione per approssimazione: ricorso al fonema o alla successione di fonemi sentiti come più vicini al modello. 2. Sostituzione per adeguamento meccanico: adeguamento alle regole fonotattiche vigenti nella lingua che compie il prestito. 3. Sostituzione per analogia: corrispondenze sentite in situazioni di intensi scambi interlinguistici, come consolidate e richiamate sotto la spinta di preoccupazioni ipercorrettistiche. L'integrazione lessicale riguarda quei fenomeni di adattamento che favoriscono la mimetizzazione del prestito all'interno del lessico indigeno. Ogni atto di interferenza si inserisce in un determinato momento dell'evoluzione di una lingua: possedendo adeguati mezzi di controllo e d'informazione, è possibile localizzare dal punto di vista cronologico, con una certa approssimazione, l'atto da cui trae spunto un prestito. I prestiti possono fornire preziose informazioni su fasi della lingua-modello successivamente alteratesi. Va poi tenuto presente il ruolo dell'allineamento mofronologico, per cui una variazione viene riprodotta meccanicamente oltre i limiti d'efficacia del mutamento fonetico che ne era in origine la condizione, sì che nessuna deduzione può fondarsi sul comparire degli stessi effetti. Ciò che viene riprodotto, sul piano semantico nel prestito, è a rigore, la sola referenza, non il significato che di norma non è recuperabile nella replica.

Il lessico del mare è spesso un documento significativo delle dinamiche
pluridirezionali che coinvolgono le varietà linguistiche costiere e terrestri partecipi dello stesso ambiente storico (cfr. Ruffino – Sottile 2015: 1-5). Ho avuto occasione di occuparmi recentemente dell’etimologia e dell’itinerario storico del tipo lessicale pareggio / pileggio, un antico
tecnicismo nautico segnato da una diffrazione formale rivelatrice, di una storia multicentrica.
Obiettivo di quest’articolo è far luce sull’insieme delle connessioni lessicali che contribuiscono a chiarire aspetti dell’evoluzione del significante e del significato: la formazione, il polimorfismo, la variazione semantica e l’uscita dall’uso.

A differenza di analoghi progetti di lingua, l'esperanto è diventato una lingua vivente che è sopravvissuta a chi l’ha concepita. Secondo alcuni esperti ciò è dovuto al fatto che possiede dei valori etici che hanno consentito ai suoi sostenitori di superare momenti difficili caratterizzati da divisioni e persecuzioni. Vale a dire che Zamenhof ha lasciato il suo approccio, con al centro l’uomo e la pace, al movimento generato da quanti hanno appoggiato questa lingua internazionale. Detto diversamente, questa “idea interna” ha influito politicamente in diversi momenti storici. Non voglio spiegarli tutti con un approccio enciclopedico. Tuttavia, presenterò degli esempi che, collegati fra loro, evidenziano la complessa, e ricca di sfumature, conformazione socio-politica del Movimento esperantista.

La struttura del mio articolo è la seguente. Innanzitutto evidenzierò la funzione dell’esperanto all’interno del movimento proletario. In secondo luogo tratterò l’oppressione sofferta da molti esperantisti in diverse dittature. Come terzo punto analizzerò più in dettaglio i ruoli giocati da questa lingua internazionale durante la guerra spagnola. Come quarto punto argomenterò sulla stretta vicinanza di esperantismo e pacifismo. Infine, come quinto punto, descriverò le attività di alcuni esperantisti che rischiarono la propria vita per costruire un mondo più giusto e dignitoso. Infine sosterrò come sia necessario che gli esperti, gli attivisti valorizzino la dimensione politica dell’esperanto (e dei suoi sostenitori) .

It is surprising that the Turkish public had to wait until 1976 to read Cours de Linguistique Générale (Genel Dilbilim Dersleri), an influential work on the national language reform. Ordered by the Turkish Language Society and published in two tomes (appeared in 1976 and 1978), it was followed in 1984 by a second edition with an updated vocabulary. Founded in the decade following the proclamation of the new republic, the society’s mission was to conceive and implement a language reform on a national scale. The translator, Berke Vardar, was an active theoretician and supporter of the language reform, who accomplished a pioneering work in introducing the discipline of linguistics in Turkey. The local context of the Cours’ publication in Turkey being closely related to this controversial but extensive language reform, my contribution will be dedicated to Saussure’s reception by language planners.
Tahsin Yücel (1968) made use of the arbitrary sign thesis to counter conservative objections against new words introduced by modernist language planners. Massive elimination of Ottoman words, quickly replaced by new ones – be it rediscovered “pure Turkish” or freshly “made-up” ones – provoked a considerable amount of indignation in more conservative circles. These objections were mainly targeted against linguistic intervention, seen as a destructive attack against the natural evolution of the language, besides being ultimately unproductive. Taking up the defence of the language reform, Yücel reclaimed individuals’ freedom over parole, referring to the Saussurean distinction between parole and langue. Another Saussurean theme that he adopts is the distinction between synchronic and diachronic, which accounts for present-day words’ remoteness from their earlier ancestors without discrediting language change. Finally, by reminding the arbitrary character of the linguistic sign, he refutes the claim that old words were more genuine, or that they held a special relation to the concept that they signify.

International Auxiliary Languages (IALs) are languages consciously planned for enabling communication between speakers having different native tongues on an equal footing. They are the most developed area of interlinguistics, the science of languages that are constructed or planned on purpose. The term “auxiliary” refers to the fact that IALs are intended to be used as second languages only. In general, IALs are supported by people who are dissatisfied of the use of national languages – like English or French – in international settings, so they promote the use of a ‘neutral’ tool. For IAL supporters, ‘neutral’ means that they are not bound to any specific ethnicity. The most successful IAL ever is Esperanto, which succeeded to gather a community of practice without substantial interruption, for over a century. Today, IALs live a new Spring thanks to the internet, especially social media and Wikipedia, which give them new visibility to the general public.
