Λόγος is often translated in italian as ‘parola’ (‘word’) in this passage, but as ‘ragione’ (‘reason’) in other similar passages of the same work. the influence of the meaning attributed intuitively to φωνή, that is ‘voice’ in the modern sense could be an explanation for this phenomenon. An attempt is then made to return a meaning of φωνή closer to the original. Unlike λόγος, φωνή has been polarized. ‘Word’ and ‘reason’ are both translations of λόγος legitimized by long traditions.

The paper aims to review some problems connected to the term/concept ‘grapheme’. The major point concerns the question of the dependency of writing on the spoken language. We distinguish between semiotic and epistemological dependency. A writing system is a code, most of which, in glottographic systems, re-codes the code of a given language (mainly the phonological one): in this sense, we accept the concept of dependency of writing systems (especially glottographic). The relation between grapheme and phoneme, however, is shown to be more epistemological than semiotic. We attempt to overcome this. The anthropological model offers solutions that are particularly interesting for ancient scripts. We introduce a concept of grapheme that covers different areas of function, from the core glottographic to the visual one.

Brief abstract.
Essay on the logos of Side in Arrianus, Anabasis.
The legomenon reported in Arrianus is studied and discussed in connection with two factors: on the one hand the correct value of the term "phoné" and, on the other, the invention of the Sidetic alphabet, for which an identity value becomes increasingly evident.

Although certain similarities of KBo 17.2 with CTH 416 are undeniable, the theory that
KBo 17.2 joins KBo 17.3+ (CTH 416.B) is problematic for a number of reasons. This study
focuses first on the physical evidence, namely the size and shape of the relevant fragments
and the text distribution on the tablets. Allowing for different join positions of KBo 17.2 and
possible scribal lapses, potential text reconstructions are presented in order to evaluate the
likelihood of a join of KBo 17.2 with KBo 17.3+. The second half of the study compares the
terminology and ritual practices described in KBo 17.2 with the particular ritual to which
this fragment should belong if the alleged join is correct as well as with the other rituals of
CTH 416 as a whole. The possibility of a join must presently remain an open question.

Textual syntax mediates textual syntax in comics. An exemplary/extreme case.
The present paper approaches problems of textual syntax in non-literary texts, in particular in figurative texts, like comics and graphic novels. The problems analyzed concern a kind of textuality which is mediated through textuality. In a recent paper, A. Manco (2017) introduces a number of technical terms for related concepts that try to assess a metalinguistic vacuum. In so doing he exemplifies in particular the concept of “pertesto” (pertext) using instances taken from graphic novels. The present paper investigates the textual potential of the pertext, analysing the syntactic textual function that the reader may find in graphic novels like the Italian Rat-Man Collection. Earlier unused pages of the graphic novel are inserted into a single new story and are linked using pertexts, which evidently acquire anaphoric / proleptic functions. The paper offers a scheme into which the nature of the pertext and the nature of the foric relations are put together. The final hypothesis states that pertexts have great potentials, not only as anaphors in general, but also as associative anaphors, perhaps analogous to pronominal ones in human languages.

This chapter is the result of the analysis of some episodes of Black Mirror and shows interesting insights for linguistics in general, for the communicative interaction between man and machine, and for the aesthetic and spiritual aspects concerning the theme of losing and reconnecting with loved ones. The focus will be on the episode “Be Right Back,” as it is the most representative considering these premises. The ref lection begins by trying to define the type of technology represented in the story, continues with a description of the linguistic interaction between the protagonists, adds some thoughts on the concept of body and textuality, and ends with a thought on the immediate relevance of the theory about the state of contemporary humanity by Luigi Zoja: the ‘death of the neighbour’ (2019). Concluding remarks are made possible by a comparison with Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky.

About: research on lexicon, grammar and folklore of Northern Italian dialect communities of Valvestino. Starting from the 1913 paper of Carlo Battisti (Die Mundart von Valvestino), the paper traces briefly a profile of Battisti, his interest in the dialect of the region and his work and collection of linguistic evidence. It introduces also the main line of the research whose aim is to verify how much of the collected lexicon is lost, which lexical fields are more reduced and how archaic forms survive. Topics of methods in field research and of memory are also introduced. The research has a also a popular science purpose and involves actively private citizens.

The present paper illustrates some of the results of the recent project about Side and the Sidetic inscriptions undertaken by a team of scholars from the universities of Graz and Verona. The project produced a new Gliederung of the inscriptions; a new dating of the East Gate monument; and a thourough review of some texts. The East Gate being the find context of a stone with two monolingual Sidetic inscription is of great importance for the interpretation of the inscriptions. The new results of the archaeological campaings suggest that the stone was relocated on the terrace of the Gate coming from a different original context. So a textual connection with the Gate and its weapon friezes is now a more remote probability. The new Lyrbe stele seems to support a reading /v/ for the Sidetic letter |N24|. The Artemon bilingual is here re-interpreted with two new possible readings

This paper briefly presents hypotheses about gender, number and ergativity in Hittite. Terminological problems about ‘gender’ in Hittite will be sketched in the first part. ‘Gender’ is a pertinence only of core arguments and is basically visible in the contrast between a class of NPs treated with an accusative system and a defective class of NPs resulting in an ergative system (but without an ergative case). Finally the paper puts forward the hypothesis that the reason for the split in the system is to be searched in features that characterize lexical and grammatical morphemes involved in the constitution of NPs. The distribuiton of these features (basically connected to a pluralizer function pl* and a quantificational filter num) might be responsible for resorting to \-nt-\ derived nominals. KEYWORDS: Hittite, IE morphosyntax, ergative, ergativity, nominal definitenessThis paper briefly presents hypotheses about gender, number and ergativity in Hittite. In this contribution we discuss the formation of the personal endings of the singular for the category 'middle'. Reading through some of the most widely available handbooks about Proto-Indo-European, it seems evident that the reconstruction of the historical personal endings of the 'middle' lacks a uniform consensus. The different points of view cover the chronological morphology, the original function and formation during or after the unitary phase of these markers. We try to sketch a clarifying hypothesis confirming a non-uniform chronological reconstruction of the 'middle' which requires a stratified picture of PIE also for the functional values of the category that reaches its full morphology only in the historically attested languages

A corpus of ancient texts can be defined as a set of historical artifacts: we can actually say it is a conventional mapping of historical artifacts into a set, thus, in a sense, it is an “artifact” in itself. The original item(s) of such a set are written texts that are preserved by a direct2 or indirect tradition: not every element in it is usually well preserved or perfectly survived. Some elements may be damaged (as indeed we know there’s normally a large amount of them) so we must cope with a potentially infinite number of mistakes and misprintings (both ancient and modern). A digital version of a corpus of ancient texts should be defined as a set of digital information being isomorphic to the original corpus and satising the need for authenticity. Digital information are character data (CDATA) or other Objects, like images or other multi-media files, able to represent the nota and the ignota . We believe that what is known is as important as what is unknown for the constitutio...

This chapter proposed by Alfredo Rizza deals with communicative interactions between human and machine, albeit by considering the aesthetic and spiritual aspects of losing and reconnecting with loved ones. In particular, his chapter focuses on the episode “Be Right Back” and establishes, through the lens of Luigi Zoja's theory of the 'death of the neighbor' (2019), a comparison between that Black Mirror episode and Solaris (1972) by Andrei Tarkovsky. Through this comparison, the technology imagined in “Be Right Back” allows for the analysis of contemporary social media as phatic systems. As noted by Rizza, “Be Right Back” imagines that the technological reproduction of a deceased person works surprisingly well in linguistic-communicative terms, but only to the point when the deceased is actually reproduced in a material body, a 'body' whose behaviors show characteristics that recall certain kinds of textuality. The episode reveals that the bodily reproduction of the deceased does not show fundamental human features such as free will, rationality, or compassion.

Starting from the analysis of constructions employed to express the category of reflexive in Hittite, encoded both by the verbal ending set of the middle and by the pronominal marker -za with both active and middle verbal forms, we present a typological parallelism with the Baltic languages that has consistently developed, from a pronominal, a verbal strategy to mark reflexivity. It is also shown that a development regarding the ways of encoding reflexivity involve other Indo-European languages as well. The Anatolian languages attest the reflexes of the original set of endings referring to the semantic categories of Reflexive, Middle and “Resultative”, while the other Indo-European languages attest an innovated “mixed morphology” for the category of Middle and Reflexive as opposed to the proper endings of the historical perfect. Within such a theoretical framework, the development of alternative strategies, using pronominal devices or particles, aims to disambiguate a wide polysemou...

The toponym Tabal was used by the Iron Age Assyrians to refer to a group of Luwian kingdoms and principalities that occupied Cappadocia during the first centuries of the Iron Age. The name itself was not used by the Luwians and it is debated whether or not it was continued in later traditions, such as the Biblical one. It thus seems to be a specific exonym reflecting an Assyrian (and possibly Canaanite) point of view. Nevertheless, an Assyrian etymology has been recently criticized, and few alternative analyses, including a Luwian and a Hurrian one, have been suggested. Admittedly, however, all of these hypotheses present formal and historical unsolved problems. In this paper we will (1) review the reasons why a Hurrian and a Luwian derivation do not hold water; (2) examine the real semantics of the Semitic root *’BL as it appears in Akkadian tābalu and nābalu; (3) propose an alternative analysis based on the linguistic profile and history of the cultures of Mesopotamia and Syro-Ana...

Literary texts are genuinely known for being an artistic and inspirational expression of the author’s imagination. Given the current technical facilities of the 21 century and the ongoing need for cutting-edge innovative advertising, the printed book eventually became a new focus of the marketing industry. This paper puts emphasis on the current usage of literacy for commercial and advertising purposes and on the integration of literacy into brand campaigns.

This book is the first of a new series, ‘LautSchriftSprache / ScriptandSound’, focusing on the field of graphemics (the study of writing systems), in particular historical graphemics. As the traditional view of writing as (merely) a way of representing speech has given way to a more nuanced understanding of writing as a different, rather than secondary, means of communication,1 graphemics has become an increasingly popular field; it is also necessarily an interdisciplinary field, since it incorporates the study not only of written texts’ linguistic features, but also broader aspects such as their visual features, material supports, and contexts of production and reading. A series dedicated to the study of graphemics across multiple academic disciplines is therefore a very welcome development.
